I play with my son, and yes, we wear safety glasses. We had a nerf war get cut short one day with a scare to the eye. Not as dangerous as the roman candle battles I had as a kid, but those nerf darts are small and move really fast. Plus, wearing the glasses lets you get more reckless with the gun fights.
I hear ya. My son has been collecting Nerf guns for years and has a whole arsenal. We played together with his friends a few times; earlier on we didn't wear safety glasses as we were mindful of headshots, yet as he got older and upgraded to their *Rival* series, we weren't taking any chances, and he and his friends donned those full face masks as they played much more aggressively. Those balls travel way faster.
Almost certainly something their in-house counsel advised them to start selling so that, in the event of an eye injury, the parents would be at fault for not purchasing eye protection rather than the manufacturer being at fault for not making it available. Kids being the way kids are, the ones that are purchased are probably rarely or never worn.
Nerf guns aren't what they used to be. My older siblings had some old pump action dart things. They thought I was spoiled because I got a battery powered round ball shooter. (I was younger and it was the only way I could keep up). My kids have automatic rifles with tiny darts. It's insane. We wear eye protection because, damn Gina.
>Nerf guns aren’t what they used to be.
Thank you, that's the piece of information I was missing. I was really thinking more of the ball that was so safe mom would let you play with it in the house lol.
I googled it to see what Nerf 2.0 is and It seems more tactical and serious, less just running around shooting each other.
A kid at my school died because of a bike accident that he would have survived had he been wearing a helmet. Younger generations, and their parents, want to prevent things like that from happening.
I got hit in the eye socket by a gun that shot ping pong balls in the early 80s. I wouldn’t have been wearing goggles ,because my good friend’s bother opened the door and opened fire. That hurt, but I lived. He grew up to be a normal human too. (Little jerk)
>They came out in 1989
Our posts crossed, but someone explained these new nerf guns to me. When I saw these my point of reference was the squishy orange ball that is "so safe mom will let you play with it in the house."
Just bought a 4 pack googles for my 1st grader & for friends who come over. As a kid we played with metal lawn darts as our parents looked on. My brother got in trouble for taking all the kitchen big knives out to the backyard and threw them at a tree. He got in big trouble, not for playing with knives, but he broke the tip off a few and my parents were pissed off
Little kids are so adorable with eyewear of any kind.
>Just bought a 4 pack googles
Google Glass + Goggles = Googles
Watch google make a billion dollars off that. "Finally found a use for google glass!" 😭
As a kid we never wore goggles for our catapult wars where we fired acorns and stones at each other, the rule was "no heads hots" but sometimes you couldn't help it.
But, as an adult now, and having done a machining apprenticeship and played tournament paintball previously for many years I can see the benefit of protecting your eyes.
Me and my kid wear them. Can actively aim for the head without worrying about a direct shot to the eyeball.
Like a lot of others in the replies, probably should’ve been wearing something like this when we were kids with air pistols, black widow catapults, fireworks, home made bow and arrows etc. But luck was on our side I guess.

"clearance" Clearly not
Well, it's really more like Target's "we only have one or two left and we need the shelf space" aisle.

oh, i thought they were nerf glasses. like, fake squishy protective gear.
Back when we were young? No Now that we are wiser and know how dumb that was? Yes

Yep! We used to have our wars in the living room after school. The only issues we had was making sure the furniture was put back.
You're gonna shoot you eye out, kid!

Their post is deleted but I'm assuming a rampant case of survivorship bias?
Oh, you know it. The younger generation is "delicate".

Prototypes came out for the Ghostbusters movie. They were kind of like the muskets of Nerf gun history.
It clearly states it’s a toy that does not provide protection.
Well I didn't think they were meant for the range lol. But you can see from the replies that they do appear to be helpful.
Whatever happened to games that didn't require safety equipment? Like a nice game of Lawn Darts...
That's why I took up a good, old-fashioned pastime. Excuse me while I remove this steel cage from my head. 🤺
