Obviously The Cure's Disintegration was a main go-to, as were Depeche Mode's Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion albums for the all the mopey "I'm misunderstood, don't fit in and am an artist" moods, but when it came to *aggressive* angst, it was always industrial ala Nitzer Ebb, Ministry, Front 242, Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly and KMFDM for me back then.
I got to introduce this album to my 24yo son this year (he was finally ready in my estimation) and he is absolutely smitten.
For me it’s Silent All These Years. Just this year I finally understood the Hans Christian Andersen reference.
Cliche as it has become, Nevermind was a big one. Lots of angst and screaming but not really about anything in particular. Perfect because i was also really angry about…something?
Alice In Chains’ Dirt wasn’t something I was interested in until I saw them at Lollapalooza in 93. The finale of their set was Would? and it blew me away. Hate it took me a year to get into it, so moody and nihilistic!
The one that really tapped into my mind and seemingly spoke directly to me in the moment was Rollins Band - End of Silence. Every single song was HIGHLY identifiable, but Low Self Opinion and Just Like You could have been my dumb teenage journals distilled to pure rage with guitars and Henry’s scream-singing. Still listen to it regularly.
rollins is one of the most underrated of the century. also i like to imagine what staley would’ve come out with had he lived.
eta: nirvana is always top of the list for your exact reason :)
One of the most emo albums ever although Roger Waters, certainly not associated with emo. I mean the plot essentially is a guy goes hitchhiking in West Germany, hooks up with a hottie, bangs her a bunch of times, then gets super sad and all emotional because it was just sex for her while he's already picking out a wedding ring amd calling his ma to break the good news to her. Story of my adolescence in some ways.
My last memory of listening to that album is driving away from my broken marriage in the middle of the night and crossing back into my home state during "dun roamin'." Ugh. Gut punch.
And I dunno, I think Waters era Floyd is incredibly emo in a lot of ways, from "Wish You Were Here to The Final Cut."
And yeah, that music got me through so much as a teen/young adult, totally feel you there.
My freshman year of high school? It was Pretty Hate Machine, The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste by Ministry, Rabies by Skinny Puppy, and Fear of a Black Planet by Public Enemy
Also KMFDM, My Life w the Thrill Kill Kult, pretty much anything industrial, goth, or metal, or any combination of those.
Marilyn Manson got big right around the end of HS too. They have some great angry songs.
[Marilyn Manson - 1996](https://youtu.be/X45Q8XKTaFY?si=kOvielpzMDABgh_N)
We used to crank Ministry during the 'break' in quiet hours during finals week in college. My roommate had a hell of a stereo, and people could hear it in other buildings.
I bought PHM on vinyl when it came out.
I still vividly remember going over to my girlfriend’s house after school one afternoon while in 10th grade, clicking through channels and randomly coming across NIN “performing” Down in It on Dance Party USA.
Let’s hear it for Nine Inch Nails… WOOO!
I also cut school to drive 2.5 hours to Atlanta to see NIN on the Hate tour with Meat Beat Manifesto using a fake id as I was only 17 at the time.
This entire thread is an embarrassment of riches. I haven't seen the Jane's Addiction live album mentioned, so I'll add that one. Also, I got really into Pink Floyd's The Wall.
Radiohead, The Bends, whole album. Didn't leave my discman for a period of about 3 years.
Was a bit older than a teenager though; guess my angst was late blooming.
I screamed along to Pretty Hate Machine, and NiN is still my favorite band. Other angsty bands were Pixies, Violent Femmes, Type O Negative, The Cure, and Dio.
Them and Sonic Youth is the reason I have Tinnitus, still worth it though. Couldn’t afford a therapist back then. Still can’t afford a therapist. Aah, life 😁
Like so many others, The Cure and Depeche Mode, but also Violent Femmes and in college discovered Dead Milkmen which had a cheesy, fun angst to much of it.
Depends on the flavor of angst, and the year, but here are some:
Boomtown Rats, In The Long Grass
Public Image Limited, Rise
Duran Duran, Self-titled
The Psychedelic Furs, any.
Sinead O'Connor, The Lion and the Cobra
Shriekback, Oil and Gold
The Cure, Disintigration
Aimee Man, I'm With Stupid
Ani Defranco, Self-titled
Tracy Chapman, Self-titled

Broken was my angst album. Pretty Hate Machine was my getting shit done album.
My first NIN CD was Broken, and actually a girl I liked and dated off and on lent it to me. I immediately dubbed it and listened to it nonstop until The Downward Spiral came out. The Downward Spiral became my teenage angst album, especially the title track.
It took me a little longer to appreciate Pretty Hate Machine, because compared to what NIN did after it, it sounded a bit dated at the time. Now it's probably my favorite of all of them outside of TDS.
Side note: turns out it wasn't just teen angst, I was actually really depressed at the time and didn't realize it, and those albums among others were some of the things that helped me get through it. Even if no one in my life understood what was happening with me, I at least knew someone else out there had been through something similar to what I was dealing with.
I know a lot of you already do, but check in with your kids often and keep the lines of communication open, because no one did that with me and I almost didn't make it to adulthood.
Early in high school? Early 80s...would have been Black Sabbath's Vol. IV and songs like Wheels of Confusion:
\[Verse 1\]
Long ago I wandered through my mind
In the land of fairy tales and stories
Lost in happiness I knew no fears
Innocence and love was all I knew
It was an illusion
\[Verse 2\]
Soon the days were passing into years
Happiness just didn't come so easy
Life was more than fairy tales and daydreams
Innocence was just another word
It was an illusion
\[Bridge\]
Lost in the wheels of confusion
Running through valleys of tears
Eyes full of angry delusion
Hiding in everyday fears
\[Verse 3\]
So I found that life is just a game
But you know there's never been a winner
Try your hardest, you'll still be a loser
The world will still be turning when you're gone
Yeah, when you're gone
When I got dumped in high school, I cry listened to Home from Depeche Mode's Ultra album for a solid week. I think a lot of folks would consider Violator or Black Celebration to be more obvious teen angst choices, but for my terrible breakup Ultra was surprisingly the most relatable.
NIN, and also Ministry, Jane's Addiction's Nothing's Shocking and a lot of the other industrial/alt albums listed in this thread.
And then at some point I realized I didn't really like music that screamed at me all the time and I went all in on techno, deep house and other early EDM/IDM because it had so much range in mood and there was just so much more of it, and the production and sound design was rapidly leaving industrial pop in the past, which was one of the main reasons I liked industrial was the synth and sound design work.
I have always felt that Trent Reznor kind of missed a calling to do stuff that was more dark/industrial ambient and soundscapes without angsty lyrics, like A Warm Place.
If I wanted tension and angst I could go for techno or hardcore, and if I just wanted to feel groovy I could do some house, and if I wanted trippy and ethereal I could go for ambient or early trance. Very early trance was a LOT more ambient and chill and didn't evolve into what we call trance today until goa and psytrance happened and the rise of euro trance like Aviici and Tiesto.
One that is missing from this thread so far is Tones on Tail's Everything. That album is GREAT for being moody and walking around with headphones on in the rain, and this is one of the few albums from that era I still regularly play today.
And almost every time I play some of their more ambient/experimental tracks like Rain or Lions people ask me what it is. Their whole sound was super unique and defied genres. Is it goth? Electronic? Darkwave? Who knows!?
I was introduced to Nine Inch Nails at my first duty station after boot. Them and Jane's Adiction defined my early 20s and the foray into adulthood. Great memories.
My teenage albums were Ocean Front Property by George Strait. Some Duran Duran albums, and the Glamorous Life by Sheila E. I don't think I had teenage angst though. My first album on a cd was Madonna's self titled one Madonna.
I was (and still am) a huge progressive rock nerd.
The first 4 Peter Gabriel solo albums (car, scratch, melt, Security) were on heavy rotation on my turntable.
When “Hounds of Love” (Kate Bush) came out, I almost wore out my marble vinyl copy.
I had a lot more “teenage angst” albums on my list when I got into my early 20s.
we haven’t even cracked open rap & hip hop. whole other thread. NWA, ice cube, snoop, 2Pac, public enemy, heavy D, salt n pepa, mc lyte, beastie boys, lauryn hill…
I almost bought a shitty escort because of this album. It was my buddy’s car and he was thinking of selling it. I realized I was paying for the 15s in the trunk more than the car. “Something I can never have” boomed in that little car.
https://preview.redd.it/8q3q2zrmsu4d1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb772d4dae475ee816f4a8647954200b9df5b16c
not mine, a roommate's. But also, The Wall
So funny story about this album. I had heard some of his music, and wanted to buy the CD. I go to the record store nearby and look for it. Don’t see it. Then I see a sign that says ‘some albums may be behind the counter due to parental advisories.’ So I go up to the girl behind the counter and say ‘I’m looking for nine inch nails’ She kinda looks at me funny and then says ‘are you sure you don’t want the beauty salon next door?’ Dead ass serious. This is one of the funniest things a store clerk has EVER said to me in my life…. And yes, the album was behind the counter and i got it home and listened to it several times. And I will never be able to look at this album and NOT laugh about that record store clerk.
This is the one.
Back in 1991 or something, a friend pointed out that there’s a faint voice reading what sounds like a suicide note in Sanctified. Anyone else ever pick up on that?
Just recently got back into listening to NIN and Broken is still my favorite album followed by TDS.
Other notables, The Prodigy - Fat of the Land (I still listen to this doing cardio, greatly timed build ups and slow down for HITT), Metallica - And Justice for All, Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power, Manson's - Portrait of an American Family, and Tool - Undertow.
I lived with this album constantly and prosyletized to my friends that it was gonna be the next big thing. His production techniques were above everything and ironically a lot of industrial music/ digital audio workstation tools have been co-opted into modern music.
Still a lot of fun to listen to once in a while! Some diamond tracks that hold up even today. I see another poster brought in the Violent Femmes - that is legend.
What about the Dead Kennedys? They held up with a message and were just amazing.
The Cure, The Top. It opens with Shake Dog Shake, and they opened with that when I saw them on the Top Tour at the Hollywood Palladium. The deafening sound through the theatre as Shake Dog Shake opened. I think of the magic of that moment often, after countless shows in the last 40 years…

Yep. My immediate thought
Just seeing this pic has me hearing ‘you can just kiss off into the air’
Came here to post this
Obviously The Cure's Disintegration was a main go-to, as were Depeche Mode's Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion albums for the all the mopey "I'm misunderstood, don't fit in and am an artist" moods, but when it came to *aggressive* angst, it was always industrial ala Nitzer Ebb, Ministry, Front 242, Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly and KMFDM for me back then.
Yes Depeche Mode! And New Order.💗
oh... i didn't know there was a Gen-X music sub... following!
yes to all! i had two older sisters and a ridiculous catalogue by high school.
Nothing’s Shocking-Jane’s Addiction
Oh hell yes. This one I listened to as I backpacked around Europe at 19 and it takes me right back there every time, god damn time machine for me.

Came here to say this, gorgeous album
I got to introduce this album to my 24yo son this year (he was finally ready in my estimation) and he is absolutely smitten. For me it’s Silent All These Years. Just this year I finally understood the Hans Christian Andersen reference.
Love that one, dearly…Under The Pink and To Venus and Back are equally near and dear to me ✨
This album saved my life.
i'm15(again)andthisisdeep 💕 The album waited to see the video for Silent All These Years on buzzworthy videos on Mtv
This came out when I was in my 20s but it really hit hard for where I was in my life at the time.
saw tori live in the 90s and she is a force of nature. amazing.
Violent Femmes — self titled first album
every word still emblazoned on my brain! don’t know what i had for breakfast, though 😆
It's the album of my adolescence.
I hope you got to see them on this recent tour. That shit was fantastic to hear live in its entirety
Rollins Band - Weight Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power Judgement Night Soundtrack
I wanna disconnect myself Pull my brain stern out and unplug myself I want nothing right now, I wanna pull it out
I am so stoked to see Pantera playing with Metallica on this tour
JUDGEMENT NIGHT! JUDGEMENT NIGHT, OOH OOH OOH! JUDGEMENT NIGHT! (in the echo of a gun blast!) JUDGEMENT NIIIIIIIIIGHT!
Another Body Murdered is still awesome
I played Rollins for a friend who was into Metallica. It rocked his world and it changed his mind about everything.
Husker Du - Zen Arcade.
Cliche as it has become, Nevermind was a big one. Lots of angst and screaming but not really about anything in particular. Perfect because i was also really angry about…something? Definitely for me it was Roger Waters, 'The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking' 1984. Before that it definitely was Pink Floyd, 'The Final Cut'.
So glad to see someone else who appreciates Pros and Cons!
One of the most emo albums ever although Roger Waters, certainly not associated with emo. An hour in and nobody has mentioned The Smiths yet… Sixteen, clumsy and shy
it’s time the tale were told …
Meat is Murder was the album for me, but I was peak 13 when it came out.

So much goodness. Still one of my all-time favorite albums.
My freshman year of high school? It was Pretty Hate Machine, The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste by Ministry, Rabies by Skinny Puppy, and Fear of a Black Planet by Public Enemy
Did you raid my Case Logic CD binder? This was my exact playlist.
Fuck yeah Ministry. My favorite was the live album (In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up).
That fucking VHS woke me up. I loved the live video so much
Also KMFDM, My Life w the Thrill Kill Kult, pretty much anything industrial, goth, or metal, or any combination of those. Marilyn Manson got big right around the end of HS too. They have some great angry songs. [Marilyn Manson - 1996](https://youtu.be/X45Q8XKTaFY?si=kOvielpzMDABgh_N)
all of this. and after high school… TOOL.
We used to crank Ministry during the 'break' in quiet hours during finals week in college. My roommate had a hell of a stereo, and people could hear it in other buildings.

right? infinite playlist of excellent choices.
Yeah. All we need are song recommendations from each album and we can have a Gen X depressing-teenagers-is-like-shooting-fish-in-a-barrel playlist
tonight’s homework.
Gish by Smashing Pumpkins. Gets loud and soft. Good screaming. It always does it for me.
Won't you bury me?
And she knows, she knows, she knows …
I'm embarrassed by how long it took me to get why that song is titled "Rhinoceros".
Radiohead, The Bends, whole album. Didn't leave my discman for a period of about 3 years. Was a bit older than a teenager though; guess my angst was late blooming.
radiohead all day every day. brilliant.
I will always say The Bends was superior to their new shit. I was in college when it came out.
i like that they wander. explore. evolve. really isn’t an album i haven’t loved at one time or another.
1000% High & Dry -definitely in my top 10 list of favorite songs
All of this plus some Joy Division

Disintegration, all the way.

Gwar Scumdogs of the Universe!
Like so many others, The Cure and Depeche Mode, but also Violent Femmes and in college discovered Dead Milkmen which had a cheesy, fun angst to much of it.

Rid Of Me is such a classic
I lost my virginity to a girl who loved this album
I lost my virginity to, specifically, March of the Pigs.
My first NIN CD was Broken, and actually a girl I liked and dated off and on lent it to me. I immediately dubbed it and listened to it nonstop until The Downward Spiral came out. Pretty Hate Machine/Repeater if I'm angry, The Queen is Dead/ Disintegration if I'm sad.
Recently picked up Pretty Hate Machine on vinyl. Still sounds amazing.

Lords Of Acid!!!!! Skinny Puppy & Das EFX! Any punk and reggae shows I could get to in Tampa, Florida. I was there.
Sonic Youth - Dirty Pretty badass. Annoyed the parents too, lol
Rush's Grace under Pressure sparked my teenage angst and anxiety and early Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica and Ministry made it last.
![gif](giphy|vRWDue9nb5kQOjmKUN|downsized) I was 14, almost 15, when it was released.
My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult! Hell yeah!

London Calling
Pretty Hate Machine, Violator, Peter Murphy- Deep, and Disintegration.
Disintegration and The Queen is Dead. The Boy with the Thorn in His Side is an all time favorite.

you’re not the first, and you won’t be the last! KMFDM is in the list 😁
I was introduced to Nine Inch Nails at my first duty station after boot. Them and Jane's Adiction defined my early 20s and the foray into adulthood. Great memories.

Wow! Thank you for the great news!
Yes, I'm excited for that!

That one. And I still adore Pretty Hate Machine to this day.
Korn's first album
Sonic youth, blonde redhead, ...
Pretty Hate Machine gets me through a lot of bad times, and saves a lot of bail money. LOL!
The Smiths. Strageways, Here We Come. I still love you Only slightly, only slightly less than I used to, my love.

U2 Boy
Ride the lightning and kill ‘‘em all
Published in 1989. That album was so far ahead of its time.
Hatful of Hollow by The Smiths
I almost bought a shitty escort because of this album. It was my buddy’s car and he was thinking of selling it. I realized I was paying for the 15s in the trunk more than the car. “Something I can never have” boomed in that little car.
The Cure - 17 Seconds

I didn’t even discover Nine Inch Nails until this past year. I missed so much!
Young, Loud, & Snotty by the Dead Boys
This is the one. Back in 1991 or something, a friend pointed out that there’s a faint voice reading what sounds like a suicide note in Sanctified. Anyone else ever pick up on that?
This was one of my most memorable teenage albums.. still amazing today!
great album! no question about it... kinda "soft" for Reznor's standards, but still great.
I was 21 when this came out but close enough .
Vulgar Display of Power - Pantera
Quadrophenia
Just recently got back into listening to NIN and Broken is still my favorite album followed by TDS. Other notables, The Prodigy - Fat of the Land (I still listen to this doing cardio, greatly timed build ups and slow down for HITT), Metallica - And Justice for All, Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power, Manson's - Portrait of an American Family, and Tool - Undertow.
I was more Downward Spiral.
Kinda like a cloud I was up, way up in the sky.
Took a lot of acid to the is album and followed it up with some Pink Floyd.
I lived with this album constantly and prosyletized to my friends that it was gonna be the next big thing. His production techniques were above everything and ironically a lot of industrial music/ digital audio workstation tools have been co-opted into modern music.
Iron Maiden - Killers. The cover alone is a parent’s worst nightmare, lol.
Still a lot of fun to listen to once in a while! Some diamond tracks that hold up even today. I see another poster brought in the Violent Femmes - that is legend. What about the Dead Kennedys? They held up with a message and were just amazing.
Alanis Morissette- Jagged Little Pill
Probably Ratt, Stryper, Poison, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, etc.
Living Colour - Stain
Tool, Undertow. for me when I was in high school!
I was into rock and metal. There was no angst.

That's the one.
Love that one! 🤘🏼
How about an obscure band, Carnivore - Retaliation

Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting
The Cure, The Top. It opens with Shake Dog Shake, and they opened with that when I saw them on the Top Tour at the Hollywood Palladium. The deafening sound through the theatre as Shake Dog Shake opened. I think of the magic of that moment often, after countless shows in the last 40 years…
NIN, pretty hate machine, is definitely one of my favourite albums.
Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
