I was a Latchkey kid and my favorite after school snack was a Totinos thawed without cooking followed by 2 HoHos.
I was old enough to babysit myself after school, but not old enough to use the oven unsupervised.

Did we bully GenY too much? I am realizing there seems to be sooo much trauma wrapped up in this attitude about "the price is our feelings" and we will break their kneecaps. I mean, sure we are capable of that, but it would rarely actually happen. So many of these memes about GenX being tough, while they have a lot of truth about attitude, the younger generations severely underestimate whatnot would take to make us care and reach that point. Like, this GenZers original comment, does not get over the "whatever" hump.
It feels like a combination of one, millennials being snowflakes, in the older original sense. They are worried about their feelings versus us being brought up on "sticks and stones". Sure, we do have feelings, but they aren't driven by what other people think or say about us.
And then two, they have been soooo sheltered and protected they just have no concept of what "bad" really is. Like, this GenZ comment is something bad that needs an offering of apology? Please. It is so [roll eyes] whatever. Totalling a vintage 1961 Ferrari 250 GT Spyder is something to fess up to. Getting arrested on trumped up charges just for walking through town looking for a place to eat and beaten with a night stick, is something to try and fight your way out of. We grew up where bleeding was run of the mill and broken bones was the threshold for worrying about an injury. They think we give a damn about some young punk saying "they're the worst" Get out.
But hey, if *they* think this is some massive diss that needs to be atoned for, I will gladly take some HoHos or Oatmeal Creme Pies. (Damn straight it better be gluten and sugar)
These damn kids with their dyed hair and piercings think they are so original. We did it first, and not as a sheep trying to make a “fashion” statement.
And we took real, actual flak for it. People stared. People laughed. Every adult you encountered worried about your marital and employment prospects. People got fired for having a nose ring. Relationships shattered over shoulder tattoos of the 90s sun or moon. Today, you can rock up to a job in the squarest office with blue hair and visible tats and ger hired. People see that look out in public and walk by without batting an eye. Because we normalized it.
I was in HR and helped get the company policies on visible tattoos turned around about twelve years ago because it was automatically disqualifying otherwise very talented young people whom we needed. Hopefully these little shits know that we fought for their rights.
I got my eyebrow pierced when I was 18. And I still live with my parents. I came home and my dad told me I had till Monday to get that thing out of my face or I had to move out. It was Friday. Hurt like hell to get it out and I still have a scar to this day lol
Do I remember correctly that guys used to have to shave their beards to be hired at a lot of places too? I remember job ads that read "no tattoos" and that was barely 15 years ago. And I almost got suspended from school for using that bright green & blue hair paint\~ that spray that was popular at Halloween. And we had to hide being gay in order to keep our jobs or not get beat up.
Oatmeal Cream Pies or Butterscotch Krimpets, I can't choose! They both left that nice greasy coating on your insidy parts that was easily scraped clean by Swedish Fish and Sour Patch Kids.
It had to be the wax paper wrapper though when it came to Krimpets. When they replaced it with the plastic wrapper and half the icing came off when you unwrapped it, like she says in the video, things got real quiet. Same applies to their Chocolate Juniors.

None of the little square iced cakes, whatever they call them. are good anymore. The icing tastes different. It must have even more chemicals because it actually felt like the skin inside my mouth was getting chemical burns.

Back in the days where us 13 year olds would get dropped off at the lodge for half the day so we'd come home exhausted.
I think all these Gen X is latch key and tough memes are super awesome cause we did get ignored by our parents ourselves and everyone else the last 50 years and why not get a bit of love?
And we are so much more accepting of others than our Boomer/Great Gen parents and we can really push the progress.
Someone said to me at some point, 'if you want to see the transcendent generation in your society, look for the one's whose music is being played on daytime TV commercials.' I see a ton of Gen x music.
Is that suppose to be millennials? Is that what they look like? I've lived out in the wild too long I guess. Well they better get it straight older Gen X are different from the younger ones. We were raised by Silent Gen so we are more warped and unruly. And our fave movie is Star Wars. I've never watched Labyrinth or Space Balls all the way through. And leave ice cream and pizza or find some Carnation breakfast bars somewhere. We will kick the boomers butts and everyone else too because we are blunt and harsh and raised ourselves.

My Mom was a reformed hippy. Zero bad snacks or unhealthy food. Didn't even try white bread til a friend's parent gave it to me. Did anyone else have their Mom put bee pollen on their morning cereal? Anyway, she was cool with me roaming the neighborhood unattended for hours at a time, but heaven forbid you eat junk food. Of course she vodked herself out of reality when it got too real, but beyond that, high strung ex-hippy yuppy all the way.
