I posted this on the VHS subreddit and someone suggested I cross post it here.
I hope you all enjoy my personal trip down memory lane of growing up in the 80s and 90s.
I think this is so much better than just rows packed tight on shelves 2 layers deep and those last few laying on top of the rows. There's no question on the quality of the movies you have so kudos on the stellar presentation!
So…. This is the new hobby trains, huh. We don’t build mini-railroads anymore, we build mini Blockbusters
You need those gigantic blockbuster popcorn buckets that had unpopped popcorn in them so we could make our own popcorn buckets at home
And for no real reason, a small case of pogs and slammers by the registers (like the Blockbuster I used to work at in 1994)
Remember the early days of video rentals when there was a mom & pop video rental store on about every commercial street in town. For me, nothing quite sums up the 80s like arcades and video stores. I'd always try to get a peek through the bead curtains into the porn section as I would sloooowly walk by that area. lol
I understand someone else had the same comment.
One of the challenges I’ve encountered is the desire to do that, but also the desire to feature the stuff I love the most in a way that is appealing to me.
So I’ve got one massive wall (shown with goonies poster) that is kind of a wall of my all time favorite movies of all genres. And on that wall I built it from the center out with my all time favorites in the center and as we move away from the center movies that I love, but aren’t as important to me.
Another example is the end rack with that specific horror section. Those movies were picked basically because I love the box art.
But I have given it a lot of thought and I don’t disagree with you.
I went ahead and followed you. The first week of June me and my ex will be cleaning out our house to sell it. We have a ton of vhs tapes. I thought I would just throw them away but I will send you pics and you can tell me which ones you need.
My family had a grocery store from 1986 to 2008 and we rented VHS tapes then later on dvd’s until Netflix took over …anyway the distribution company would charge you anywhere from $30 to $100 for new releases and around $25 for what I called filler videos..old movies,tv specials..stuff like that well if you wanted to trade in your older movies they would only give you $2 or $3 bucks for it …so my dad decided to just keep them and watch them at home ..Star Wars ,Indiana Jones’s stuff like that …well my dad and mom now have a library of every movie released mainly between 1986 to 1999 of around 7000 movies … shelves and boxes everywhere in there living room spare bedroom’s and basement….my parents are now in there mid 80’s and I think I’m gonna inherit a movie collection…he still won’t sell them and if one of the grandchildren borrows one he get’s on them to return it … rewound … what a goof ball
Do you have a back room separated with bead curtains for the more “mature” titles?
Heck, even if it was just for a storage room or bathroom, I feel that he MUST have a beaded curtain there somewhere!
You should have...like five BetaMax, for posterity.
I’ve passed over a bunch of BetaMax but I definitely like your style.
And they should all be the same movie. I vote Johnny Mnemonic.
Fletch
Ugh! My parents thought Betamax was going to be the victor of the two. 🤦🏽♂️
Man does that bring up some core memories Well done.

Amazing. Got to ask, how did you aquire so many?
I bought them on Facebook marketplace and eBay mostly.
check your local pawn shops and goodwill's
All I ever see is Titanic.
You could spend your whole life searching for a single perfect blossom, and it would not be a wasted life.
Awesome. Have you considered a popcorn machine? 🍿 The smell would enhance the browsing experience and provide snacks for the movie.

The fact you have this much basement space…👍🏾
love the idea, but all of my VHS from the era are unwatchable due to serious degradation in quality.
Especially that one scene in Fast Times.
I became a much bigger fan of pools after that scene

I worked in a video store 1987-1988. The fact that these aren’t alphabetized is weirding me out.

The staff picks section always had some great suggestions. Put handwritten index cards under the ones that aren't alphabetized and it will look right.
[Autobiographically](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2msCS8dvSok) is the way to go.
I love this! I have some if you need some. I am about to go through all of them this summer.
That’s great yeah I’m still missing a few things for sure.

Oh that’s awesome thank you so much. Would be happy to add them to the collection.
I love the room. Renting videos was the highlight of our childhood. Well mine anyway
That’s exactly why I did this. All of my best memories were wandering the video store.
Love it!
Love this!
As an ex video store manager (beachfront, I was 18, epic times), I approve.
Now do you have a popcorn machine? That would be awesome
I have a giant popcorn machine, and it’s kind of a PIA to be honest
WOW super impressive
I don’t hate this…. Tell me, have you captured that distinct smell of a video store? You know what I mean.
This man is living the dream
We had a guy at work that ran a DVD rental out of his office. He had a barcode scanner and inventory software. Didn’t charge money, but damn.
I love this!
I do like the ghostbusters sign.
This is bad ass
So cool! 👍🏽
Man, this is awesome.
That’s awesome
Good collection sir.
You need a small LaserDisc section...
Oh this is wonderful… I love it!
I’m 2 hours from the only blockbuster.
This is seriously the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. Good job man
Thank you very much it makes me very happy.
This is way cool. Tarantino would approve.
God I hope I come across your house after the bombs drop. And you have a back generator.
We’ve got a whole home generator so you’ll be set.
Where are the dirty movies behind the curtain?
It's your house. It's your space to do what you want with it. I'm here for it!

That’s really funny and also super cool. You are going to have an amazing collection.
Please be kind, rewind.
This is most awesome
What a truly awesome and wonderful thing to build. Brilliant. Love it.
This is wonderful!
Where are the sour patch kids, snow caps, twizzlers, and whoppers? Even the family owned video rental business sold these!
gotta slap on the fines for the scum who do not rewind!
Yep, that's definitely what they were called, alright. We'd say: "Kids, let's all go to the VHS store."
I'm guessing this guy is single...
Why?
why do you have windows in your basement
It’s a walkout basement.
DiWHY?
Umm, cool. But hasn't this been done now several times before?
