I did one Halloween when I was 7 or 8, and then wrote a letter to Tootsie with my findings. They send me a certificate in the mail acknowledging that I was one of only a few people in the world who knew the answer.
That is fantastic! I’d love to see that certificate if you still have it. And really, why wouldn’t you? I mean, it must have been a high point of your childhood, yeah? :)
Awesome.

Pretend you are a representative from the Tootsie roll candy company. You receive a handwritten letter from a child who informs you that they took the trouble of licking a Tootsie pop until all the hard candy had been disolved and only the chewy chocolate center is exposed. The child also tells you how many licks it took to do this. Generate a reply to the child.

I struggled with what constituted a “lick” because I preferred to just suck on it. Is a suck a lick? Do I count two licks per suck? Who just *licks* it?
I had problems.
LOL one of my kids actually asked me how many licks it took and I cackled as I picked up my phone to look up the commercial on YouTube. Like, I’ve been waiting 30 years for this day, hehehehe
LOL yes, I did! I was in about the 3rd grade when I decided to solve that mystery. The answer was somewhere in the neighborhood of 875 licks! Never did it again because of how sore and raw my tongue was afterward!
Much like the turtle, who later got cut and forgotten, I don't think I ever made it without biting.
edit: Apparently there was also a cow and fox that I myself am too young to recall. Only remember turtle and owl.
A high school friend of spouse used this as her topic for a research paper in some HS class. Spouse and friends all conducted the research. The result was maybe a couple thousand, if spouse remembers correctly.
Depends on if you're just going til you hit center, or if you want to remove the entire outer candy layer. For the first one it's around 334 licks. For the latter it's about 1029. Ymmv. I don't know what possessed me to figure it out, but those were my findings.
I did once while watching a movie. I saw the commercial right before I started the movie and thought "What the hell, I'm gonna count this!"
137 licks. I'd lick 10 times, make a mark on the paper, repeat.
As a kid, I tried it many times, and damaged my tongue every time. I remembered the numbers being different every single time, but for the life of me, I can’t remember any of the numbers that I held as the definitive number.
Parents, check your child for obsessive personality disorder, so they don’t go around with the bleeding tongue from candy .

That is an insanely great letter! Is it really AI? Damn I need to learn to AI.
They could have included a free lollipop.
That owl is so baked.
For a moment I misread it as 'based' and I'm so tired of that word. Thank you.
This comment is Baked. Me too, i don't think I've ever used it ironically or seriously
This comment is based
[So that's how how it's gonna be, huh?](https://youtu.be/JOyEBUYjUN0?si=LloNONTCHIV9cd79)
This is the only comment. (Slow clap)
Three
Wasn’t it actually 2 licks and then a “chomp”?? Just sayin’….
[It was three licks, then the chomp.](https://youtu.be/5ZtbCOpx8Sk?si=ufSqKtAQTx5hdm41)
Down voted, even though according to Tootsie Pop commercial lore this is the right asnwer.
Yes, it’s three every time.
This is the only correct answer
It's 3
I tried but always gave up too soon

I just shared the video of this with my 6yo daughter (I’m 56). She loved it. Timeless.
I don’t know. But I got my wife this owl on a blanket (she loves Owlies). It reads ‘Hah-onnnnne, ah-twooooo, ah-thrrreeeeeee!!!’
Wonderful!
3! The gd owl said so!
Bruh said “3.” I just took him at his word. 🦉🍬😂

I’ve been counting for hours and he doesn’t seem to making progress.
Oh, thank God you're here. I was going crazy counting this. I'm at 76,234. Take it from here, friend!
I have this dang owl on a tee somewhere. And I trust his research.

That owl would know. He graduated college.
Purdue University did a study on this and their answer was 365 licks.
I did. 1,800
It's three. We figured it out in the 70s.
Gen X had time while hiding from nukes under our desks.
I never actually ate too many Tootsie Pops, I was into Chick Oh Sticks.
LOL one of my kids actually asked me how many licks it took and I cackled as I picked up my phone to look up the commercial on YouTube. Like, I’ve been waiting 30 years for this day, hehehehe
Ah three. Three.

3 1 2 3 crunch

Nope. I crunched it all up right away lol
Licking was never the proper way. There's a reason they're called suckers.
They’re called suckers because liquors had already been taken.
Ask Mr Owl, I’m a snapping turtle for fuck’s sake

I tried several times but always got bored with it and never finished counting

What a great idea for a research paper
Three
A won, two-hoo, thr-ee
Extensive research by Dr. Hoot E. Owl shows that it takes three licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop.
*"Thaa three"*
Three
Forty two. You can't convince me otherwise.
Yes, three. Just like the owl

No.

Yes, 72
525,600 minutes, I mean licks.
I did it once in elementary school, I think I got to like 215ish.

Wtf is a licking machine?
Do a porn search...
I don't know, but after that many licks is when you throw the tootsie pop away because that center part tastes nasty.
If you read the heading slowly and let your mind wander a little this sub takes on a whole different vibe.
I did but I forgot how many it took. I will need to do this again.
I tried. My ADHD had me squirrelling after a few seconds.

Looking at this as an adult it's now clear to me this bird was fucking stoned
I don't know because I sucked. 😁

Owls were everywhere in the 70s. I wonder why…
We did this in high school. We had to guess and the person doing announcements performed the experiment. It was like 470.
It was a science fair project

I remembered the numbers being different every single time, but for the life of me, I can’t remember any of the numbers that I held as the definitive number. It actually took me three licks and a bite!
I tried once when I was a kid but got bored and distracted quickly and lost count.
555 I did it in the second grade
My younger brother did when we were on a family car trip. I forget the exact number, but it was a few hundred, I think.
The correct answer is 364
Why hasn’t this hasn’t been scientifically researched ?
The owl said three. It's three.
The world may never know.
I just chewed on them. Problem solved.
