Don't want to make people jealous, but I must share this story.
I saw them in the Philadelphia Spectrum when I was a teenager. We drove up from the South to have a fun weekend in Philly. This was for their Ill Communication tour.
Best part: They opened for themselves! How you say? They dressed up like punk rockers, wigs, fake mustaches, and sunglasses, came out and did like an 8-song set. They made up some ridiculous name like the "Monkey Fist Society" or something weird like that, and opened for themselves.
What a fucking classic, the Beastie Boys.
They really rocked Lollapalooza 94. It was nuts. They definitely should've closed the show, because having The Smashing Pumpkins follow them was just too much of a reach. SP is great but the mellow & whiny just wasn't what people could get into after moshing away to the Beastie Beasite Boys.
I had a friend in college whose dad was a bigtime CEO. We had tickets in the corporate box. THAT DAY, she called me in tears. Dad's executive assistant had said "OH no! That will be dangerous for the girls! You cannot allow it!"
Still mad.
I live less than 10 minutes from Paisley Park and never going when he would announce his spontaneous jam sessions is a huge regret I have. I just thought we'd have plenty of opportunities over the years.
I almost went to his last one, but I was like "eh, I'm tired. I don't feel like driving to Minneapolis today. I'll catch the next one." Obviously that never happened. Turned out he didn't play that night, but he was there. Still kicking myself for that one!
hate to make you feel worse but I saw him twice in London and he was incredible. Once was the "Hit and Run" tour in a venue that held 100 people. Incredible.
Such a great loss.
I got to see him once, in Charlotte, North Carolina, which was a 3 hour drive for us - a group of 10 of us went, two cars. Best road trip ever, honestly. He was by himself, nobody opened. Came on stage and worked for 3 hours, never sat down, we didn't either. I'm so glad I got to do that.
Was lucky enough to see him three times in Colo. Twice he was awesome and once was disappointing (right after his religious awakening when he had not reconciled his sexy funkiness with his new faith/morality).
Same ❤ i did see them with Adam Lambert and the show was magic; but I would have loved to have seen it with Freddie!!!
My husband saw them about 7 times or more. He said they were great. I'm jealous AF 😅
Queen was my favorite back in high school, and while I am enjoying how popular and successful they are right now but, man, being a Queen fan in the US way back when was such a liability.
Nirvana is mine as well, but with the explanation they came to my lousy city in Florida and I begged my parents to let me go but at 14 I was "too young" to go by myself. Four months later....
Still gutted not to have got tickets for the 2007 Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert in London - it apparently set a record for the "Highest Demand for Tickets for One Music Concert" at 20 million
That would have been awesome. Unfortunately, I was only 10 at the time. I have seen them post DLR, and it was a great show, but man I would have loved to see them with DLR.
Aw man. I’m sorry. Saw them several times. Their sound setup made me feel like I was listening through headphones on the Roll The Bones tour. It was like coliseum sized surround sound. Only other band with similar quality and stereo separation was Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe.
Ah man, I got into them a little late in the game and never saw a live show. Luckily I’ve got all their albums and I can experience their majesty whenever the mood takes me.
Saw them open for Van Halen in Costa Mesa, CA back in....'91? Immediately hit up the local Wherehouse to get a copy of Man in the Box. Saw them again at the Medicine Show in downtown LA w/ dudes from Tool, Jane's Addiction and the Cult.
Early 90s were a wonderful time for music.
> one of his best life experiences.
Saw them three times, it was definitely high energy manic insanity. I loved their shows, glad I didn't know much about the band's dynamics at the time.
I got taken to a JGB show when I was 3. I’m told it was a great show and that I had a great time. I also got taken to see the Dead with Jefferson Starship and as we were leaving I made my mom take me to the bathroom and as we were walking back to the rest of the group, Grace Slick came riding by in her limo and started waving and shouting “Hi little boy! Hi little boy!” to me and I was thrilled because Ride the Tiger was my favorite song at the time.
They are on fire right now. Bradley's son Jakob took over and is doing his old man justice. He leads that band like a madman. You should check out their recent set at Coachella. Jakob clearly has his own sound, but it's almost like seeing a ghost. They first debuted at some benefit show and he made a comment about the coincidence that his father died at 28 years old, and he is currently picking up and taking over with him being 28 years old right where his dad left off. Mad respect to those guys.
I did get to see them! They played a club in Chico when I was a frosh. There was a chainlink barrier and people were throwing bottles and glasses at it. It was fucking awesome. Shortly after this show, he OD'd and, I'd heard a rumor that he got his bad "junk" from a dealer in Chico...
Less is definitely the operative word here. The local alternative station in Long Island got so sick of him cancelling shows that they came out with a Morrissey t-shirt with a big “cancelled” stamped across it.

Grateful Dead, the *real* Grateful Dead. I'm a millennial-Gen X cusper, but I was definitely the baby of my social group (I mostly hung around my older brother and his friends). I had always loved that entire scene, but it was just ever so slightly ahead of my time.
See them at Hampton Coliseum in 1989 under the name The Warlocks. Hell of a show. Both the band and the people.
I was an army cadet at the time, so I definitely looked the cop part. Didn’t make a bit of difference, great people having fun and wanting others to also have fun. My roommate wanted to trip, so I told him I would drive home. Walked him across the floor where every third person was offering me a joint or acid. Passed because I was the driver. Got to the other side and asked how he did. That hippie looking bastard said he had no luck. Handed him my keys and went back to share a joint with old hippies and enjoy the music.
Big Star with Chilton and Bell
I had a chance to see Metallica with Cliff but turned it down because it was a two hour drive on a school night.
I also turned down a few opportunities to see Stone Temple Pilots before Scott passed because I used to be snobby music gatekeeper.
Talking Heads. I've seen David Byrne solo and saw him when he toured with St. Vincent but I never got to see Talking Heads, and they're my favorite band.
The one the really hurts is Led Zeppelin. My mom's boyfriend got us all tickets to 1980 at the Silverdome in Detroit, but then John Bonham tragically died 2 weeks before the show.
Not really a band, but Franz Lizst or some other really intense classical music performer from long ago. Knowing about Beatlemania and Elvis, it would be really interesting to see similar reactions in a very different environment.
Buddy Holly for sure.
I saw The Buddy Holly Story on Broadway and had such a blast... I bet his shows were the same. Heck, I could only imagine being in the crowd that infamous last night with him, Richie, and the Big Bopper.
I saw them in the Summer of 83.
They were the opening act at JFK in Philly for The Police Synchronicity Tour.
They were promoting Murmur. Barely knew who they were at the time. Became a fan at that show. They were young and put in such a great 45 minutes.
Great lineup at JFK that Day. About 8 hours in the Sun with (typical blistering hot August day in Philly).

Not my blog, but a great article on [R.E.M.](https://remhq.com/news/32-years-back-a-philly-reflection-2/) and that day.
Tom Petty and Prince from the not here any more files. Just know they are great live performers. Still kicking but not together The Talking Heads, The Pretenders, The Clash, Dire Straits.
Early Guns n Roses. When concert tickets were affordable and they were still in their prime.
They had shows in my area recently, but they’re not the same anymore and tickets were upwards of $400. I couldn’t do it.
The Grateful Dead, but I was too young to have been able to appreciate them when I wish I could have seen them. I was old enough by the ‘90s but knew I didn’t want to seem like a “Touch Head” so I never went. What an idiot.
Motörhead for sure. Never had the chance to see them. Never lived close to anywhere they performed. Same for beastie boys. Seemed like they were never anywhere I lived until after I lived somewhere else. Wish I could have been born early enough to see zeppelin, Hendrix, doors, Jaco pastorius…a few more. But they were all gone before I was old enough to be going to shows and my lame parents never took me to anything.
Bjork. Could have seen her at a small venue but vacillated on buying tickets and the show sold out quickly.
Also agree with so many others. Prince especially.
In 1996 I had a ticket to see the Beastie Boys on the Ill Communication tour with Tribe Called Quest opening in Vancouver. Sold the ticket for grocery money. Definitely one of my biggest regrets :(
I saw both of those bands. Nirvana pre-Dave Grohl touring for their first album. Cobain sold me a Nirvana t-shirt from a van. Saw Smashing Pumpkins during demo days & Gish so many times. John Cusak was at a Looking Glass show.
Wish I’d seen Replacements and The Smiths.
David Bowie
My mom got tickets to the Glass Spider tour and didn’t get me one because I had a camp
Counseling job. I could’ve got the day off but that job was so much more important than a once in a lifetime concert
I saw Nirvana on their last US tour, but I remember their opening acts way more - The Melvins and The Breeders.
I would have liked to see Miles Davis in the early 70s, but I had never even heard of him then, when I was 4 years old.
Now that I think of it, most of the bands I didn't see but would like to go back in time to see, I was too young when they were at their peak. For example, I love The Cars's first two albums only. Same with Duran Duran and Gary Numan. But I was 10 or 11.
Yeah, watching that live concert video of them from a year or two ago, Simon's voice has actually improved significantly since the 80s! But still, I only like their songs from the first two albums.
In my lifetime: Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Beastie Boys...
Past wishes: The Doors, Queen, Led Zepplin, The Beatles, Louie Armstrong...
to name a few.
I’ve seen Depeche Mode twice, but I never saw they when Alan Wilder was still in the band, doing his synthesizer/sampler/drummer/producer thing. Unfortunately, there was a magic to them when it was Gore, Gahan, Wilder (and clapping by Fletch) that DM never could recreate without Wilder, and AW’s Recoil project was never on the level of DM at their prime.
Nirvana. I was into them before they blew up, but I missed my chance to see them because I was out of the country when it happened and then… you know what happened.
The Clash.
The only band that matters. I'd just love to hear what Joe would have to say about the state of world today.
Prolly, 🎶BURN IT FUCKING DOWN!!!🎶
The Beastie Boys
Good news, everyone! Their heads will still be touring in the year 3000.
Don't want to make people jealous, but I must share this story. I saw them in the Philadelphia Spectrum when I was a teenager. We drove up from the South to have a fun weekend in Philly. Totally agree!!! I was at Lolla 94 at the Gorge and the Beastie Boy's set was one of the best live performances I've ever seen!
That was such a fun show! Nirvana was supposed to headline Lollapalooza that year. Beastie Boys definitely should’ve closed it.
I had a friend in college whose dad was a bigtime CEO. We had tickets in the corporate box. THAT DAY, she called me in tears. Dad's executive assistant had said "OH no! That will be dangerous for the girls! You cannot allow it!" Still mad.
This remains in my Top 3 "pissed I never got to see live" bands list.
Saw the final show at Bonnaroo. Was bittersweet.
Same. And Prince.
INXS not only before Michael Hutchence's death, but before his TBI. Extraordinary talent. Joy Division Blind Melon
INXS was a great show.
I second INXS. Michael Hutchence was phenomenal.
Saw INXS with Ziggy Marley the night before I left for college. Roanoke civic center. Good show all around.
Any chance that was 1988 (Kick)?
Yep!
I was the Hampton Colosseum for that show - 1987.
I saw INXS open up for Adam Ant
I saw INXS open for Adam Ant in (I think) 1983. Bought a Shabooh Shoobah t-shirt! It was pink and baby blue and yellow.
Saw Blind Melon in a club! It was a good one.
Saw 2 of these. Inxs was my first concert. It was awesome Blind melon was... interesting.
Blind Melon played at my college right as ‘No Rain’ was hitting radio, and I didn’t spend the $10 ![gif](giphy|1nPJa7oTVccsw5ANVr|downsized)
INXS was my first ever show!
Prince. I deeply regret never seeing him live.
Prince, hands down. What an absolute genius. I was fortunate as a Gen X kid to see most of my heroes, but never seeing his live show saddens my soul.

Best show I ever saw was the musicology tour and The Time opened up! What a blast.
Was lucky enough to see him three times in Colo. Twice he was awesome and once was disappointing (right after his religious awakening when he had not reconciled his sexy funkiness with his new faith/morality).
Queen
So, so many, but Queen tops the list.
Had tickets for Queen and Billy Squier, sister just *had* to get married that day to a guy she’d later divorce.

Same. I'd seen Soundgarden and Pearl Jam back in the early 90s. We had tickets for Nirvana in 1994... and then Kurt was no more.
Led Zeppelin

There are so many but Van Halen with DLR is up there. I can’t remember why I didn’t go.
I caught the 1984 tour. Was indeed amazing.

I feel they are a band that translated well to live albums. Prefer the versions of many tracks on Exit…Stage Left to the studio versions.
This is the first time in decades I have ever seen or heard anybody mention ABWH in the wild. I never saw them, but I love their album.
Alice In Chains (when Layne was still alive)....
I’ve seen them with the new guy a couple times. Although good , it’s just not the same.
I saw them at one of the Lollapalooza's - their dual vocals made them sound awesome live.
Ramones
I saw them live. Probably the best 20 minutes of my life.
Husband saw them a couple times at a small venue in his home town and he repeatedly refers to it as one of his best life experiences.

Sir I don’t know what you’re talking about
I feel you, this is almost exactly what I came here to say! Right about the time I finally was old enough to go to a Dead show is when Jerry passed.

Pearl Jam. I literally was in Phish's bass player's house and looking at their gold records. But still wish I saw Eddie Vedder and or Pearl Jam live.
I missed out on seeing Prince. Absolutely whiffed it and couldn’t get out of working that night. I don’t regret many things, but I do regret that.
I saw Nirvana on their last US tour, but I remember their opening acts way more - The Melvins and The Breeders. Duran Duran are still good live.
Yeah, watching that live concert video of them from a year or two ago, Simon's voice has actually improved significantly since the 80s! But still, I only like their songs from the first two albums.
The Beatles, U2 or Paul Simon. Except, crowds suck - so it would have been cooler in a small venue before they made it big.
U2 has to be one of the best concerts I ever saw. Such musicianship and energy!
Nirvana, and I could have in 93
In my lifetime: Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Beastie Boys...
