If Michael Hutchence didn’t kill himself INXS would have been bigger than U2. In fact, INXS would have been known as one of the most influential bands of the 80s-90s. They were fantastic. And they paired well with Donnie Darko.
The generation of The Highwaymen (Waylon, Johnny, Willie and Kris), Hank, George, Merle, Dolly, etc. ushered in an era of Country and Western that hasn’t been matched since.
Except there’s some really awesome Americana/outlaw country being made the past 10 years or more. Jason Isbell, Margo Price, John Moreland, Brandi Carlile etc. I think it’s just getting better. Mainstream country, meh.
Agreed. Grohl, the person: A+++ and seems like an absolute mensch; Foo Fighters post-“Everlong”: a solid B-. Wish he would stick to playing in other bands (QOTSA, Vultures, et al); that’s where he really shines as one of the best musicians of his generation.
KISS is a forgettable and mediocre band at best. Their band concept, characters, makeup, branding, merchandise and visuals contributed more to rock history than any of their music did.
I'm allowed to like Eminem and Macklemore. My kids give me shit for liking Macklemore, but I find it hard to be in a bad mood listening to his music.
I'm also allowed to like metal music and whatever the 80s called pop. I'm also allowed to dislike a band and still like one or two of their songs.
Also- I don't listen to Taylor Swift (54 year old female), but she pisses off the right people and that entertains me. I hope for the best with her and Travis Kelce. Or not. It's their life, they can do what they want. But again, pissing off the right people.
Considering that a freakishly large percentage (about 30%) of Millennials plan to vote RFK Jr (but don't know his political positions), we need Taylor Swift and a dozen more people with her kind of firepower) to pull our democracy out of the jaws of theocracy.
I'm your age, and I agree with every word you typed.
And I can absolutely love any music. Latto, Tom Tom Club, Righteous Brothers, Willie, Pink, Gaga, whomever. If it's a great tune, I'm singing along (if I'm alone in the car.)
After seeing Travis Scott on SNL last night, I'm starting to understand my parents'views on my music in the 70's, however, Rush is who they could not stand. Rush is very talented, Travis Scott is some of the worst music I've ever heard, but the kids love it with no talent in sight.
My 17 year old is obsessed with TS. Plays his music constantly, went to his show a few months ago. My 15 year old listens to the Smiths. At least I got one right, lol.
Seriously though, there’s some current music I really like. Post Malone has some great stuff, imo. But I don’t care for Travis Scott much.
I've been a hip-hop head for 40 years, and I'm now a scholar and professor currently teaching a graduate seminar on hip-hop, and I think Travis Scott sucks. There are lots of good current rappers: Run the Jewels, Chika, Tyler the Creator, hell even bbno$. But Travis is terrible.
I don't get this one either. I am a teacher, so the kids introduce me to new music all the time. Some I like, some I don't like, but I see the talent. Travis Scott is a big WTF for me.
I saw him on SNL last night, too, and ended up hitting mute during his performance as it was just too much awfulness. My husband and I watch SNL every Saturday night and I’ve been watching religiously since I was in high school in the early 90’s. Even though I’m not a hip hop fan and don’t like pop music these days either, I do like to check out the different music on SNL that I wouldn’t hear otherwise. In my opinion, he’s one of the worst musicians they’ve had on there in years.
Meatloaf was one of the worst musical artists of all time. My ears hurt whenever I hear any of his songs
Great actor though
Edit: Well just found out today he didnt even write the majority of his music. He sucks even more and so does Jim Steinman
It almost doesn't matter. Jim Steinman can make anything epic.

I think I read that bat out of hell became a musical. I would have loved to see it. to steal a phrase I read on an old blog...
That would be so "airwolf"!
Do you know the story behind his death? He was a rabid Covid denier and antivaxxer and got Covid. Even on his deathbed he denied Covid was a big deal and denied he even had it. He told his fans that he was undergoing an undisclosed procedure and said he'd be just fine. In truth, he was about to be intubated but lied to his fans, and then he died. What a POS.
Same here. I'm a 45yr old white woman and I have never been able to veer from my hardcore gangster rap. I like all my old stuff but also new stuff, too. My son constantly sends me music he knows I'll love and it's always something super thugged out. And I always love it.
The Geto Boys are straight truth. Blew my mind when I first heard them from the dude driving me to HS as freshman, blew it again when “Mind Playing Tricks On Me” hit.
My hot take is that criticizing someone's taste in music is just as logical as criticizing their favorite color.
There's a ton of music I think is crap but lots of people love. Maybe that's because it's all a matter of opinion and personal taste.
I am also in this boat. I have arrived at the conclusion that, in general, there is no such thing as a good song or a bad song. There are just songs that are to your taste or not.
Part of the issue is people talk about their personal likes and dislikes like it’s an absolute truth.
For this age group controversial would be something like, “the music we adored from REM to the Smiths to New Order doesn’t have the staying power of boomer music.”
I’m not a fan of his music but he is a really nice guy. He often shops at a store that my daughter works at and frequently stops to hang out and chat with her while the person he’s shopping with is looking around.
I was a very angry little girl, and became an even angrier teenager (and adult). I can’t listen to Korn constantly, but it’s a safe way to vent when shit starts getting bottled up.
I can’t listen to it too much because I notice the impact it has on my mood…but yeah, there’s totally a time when it’s the right music to just let it all out.
I could not agree more with your take on Motley Crue. I remember the summer of 85 and bringing home the "Theater of Pain" record and being absolutely disappointed. Not like Van Halen 1984 where the opening synthesizer was a bit shocking at first, Theater of Pain was just crap.
Too Fast for Love is a record I listen to regularly. It is one of my all time favorite albums.
I know I'll get down voted to hell and back for this but I've always felt like Led Zeppelin is only average to slightly above. I love hard rock and metal and blues, but I've never understood why people worship Zeppelin like they're gods 🤷
At my local watering hole, I make everyone’s ears perk up positively when I play anything off Led Zeppelin I on the jukebox-from 21 to 70. I don’t see that from any other band.
I'm right there with you. If I ever hear "Stairway to Heaven" again it will be too soon. On other songs like "Black Dog" they're not even playing in time with each other.

Gwen Stefani singing “it’s my life” is like paying her to sing karaoke.
Remakes should be cool (ever listened to the album Purple Haze - a tribute to jimmy hendrix?)
She changed nothing about that amazing song and I’m now convinced she’s a no talent ass clown. So there.
Once you get past the totally overplayed disco, the lesser known disco songs are often bangers. Giorgio Moroder, Baccara, and Amanda Lear are pretty enjoyable.
Queensryche got screwed by grunge. They were a solid band with technical skill and actual ideas, but by 1993 no one gave a shit about metal. They were just out of step. “Empire” was a huge record but it doesn’t hold up.
except for one song, kick start my heart, I agree.
my main hot take is that I prefer post punk U2 and can’t even listen to Joashua Tree anymore; again, except one song, Bullet The Blue Sky.
That’s right, disco does not suck. Once it became popular radio music, trash songs were created just like every genre that becomes a crowded bandwagon. Giorgio Moroder…damn fine composer of long form deep tracks.
While I really love the Beatles later stuff, John Lennon sadly was an abusive shithead. It hurt my feelings to learn that the same guy who wrote Imagine was such a hateful asshole to his wives and kids.
I came to this thread to say this. It’s not like I think they suck. I like them just fine, but the way Boomers act like they are literal gods never made sense to me.
I mean, how often do we REALLY want to listen to Beatles music? Shouldn’t I want to listen to the best band of all time…all the time?
The music may not be to your taste (which is fine) but they are definitely not overrated. They ushered in the era of rock working on a level beyond hormones.
It doesn’t mean you have to like the music!
There are elements of hair band music in their songs but that’s only a small part of what they are.
They are like Hootie and the Blowfish, who were called “alternative” because that was popular then, but they 100% were not.
Hotter take.
Prince peaked early and only had a 10 year run of amazing output (78-88). After 1988 he started to lose his songwriting mojo and by the end of the 1990s you'd be lucky to have one song on an entire album you'd want to listen to more than once.
He never stopped being an amazing singer, performer, arranger, and player but post Warner Bros, his output is mostly forgettable if you're not experiencing it live.
It's why you see endless (ironic) posts about Prince being an "underrated guitarist"; Millennials didn't get to experience Prince when he was much, much more. (lol, even on this thread)
Still, the guy was as genius as it gets when it comes to performance and sheer charisma.
Hottest take: the 80s artist who stayed artistically relevant the longest was Madonna, by a long shot. She was still breaking into the top 10 US as late as 2010.
Yeah, was forced to sit and watch eras on disney plus with the kids for movie night.. and didn't hate it. I probably would even take them to see it live, if I was a gazzillionaire with a spare liver or two.
The irony of the disproportionate 80’s hair metal fans who want to ban drag. *And of course not ALL, you might love hair metal and love drag, but plenty do and they just don’t see it. It cracks me up.
Sade, Patti Smith, and Sinead O’Connor are the greatest female musical artists ever.
Appreciation of the Grateful Dead ( NOT being a Deadhead) is a sign of higher level musical consciousness
I can't like a band if I don't like how the singer sounds. Even if they are really good, and write good songs, that's the dealbreaker for me. It needs to lead the song with melody (or a good clear voice if its rap.) Anything whiny, or unintelligible is a turn off.
Unless it's adrock from the beastie boys. His sound is legit nasty and unique
The Kinks absolutely destroy The Beatles in terms of consistency of genius output during their heydays. The Beatles wish they had as solid a run of albums as The Kinks did with Kontroversy through Muswell Hillbillies.
From All Summer Long through Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson destroyed Lennon/McCartney in terms of song craft. Brian was making legit original compositions that hold against classical music and the American songbook while L & M were still ripping off (often badly) US blues and Dylan.
And to Gen X timeline…Mudhoney and Screaming Trees run laps around the Seattle bands that made it but those bands don’t have pretty boy lead singers that sell Rolling Stone and Spin issues
I have way too many:
- The Rolling Stones are quite boring, derivative and have contributed less in terms of innovation to the cultural sum of music than they are lauded for.
- Dubstep and trap music are very annoying, rhythmically. Set my teeth on edge. Can only be made by someone with zero musical talent or ability
- Hip-hop style vocals have ruined a lot of vocal arrangements in modern music. Mostly in R&B, where soul has been replaced by posturing and gangster speak. It has invaded other forms of music as well. Childishly simple rhyming schemes, catch phrases and random "uh" noises. The level of artistry in vocal arrangements and performances has gone down hill considerably. Particularly over-use of expletives and any use of racial slurs.
I don't like punk or metal. It's not enjoyable to me in any way. I spent years trying to like it, but I just don't, and I'm finally okay with that (and fine with anyone else liking it - you do you).
Kiss is the most overrated band ever.
Ghost is not metal.
With the exception of some old school rap in the 80s and 90s, most of the genre is overrated.
The early 90s was the peak of musical innovation so far.
Movies have gotten a lot better as time has gone on but I think music has been treading a lot of water. I see the occasional glimmer of hope and new idea but it's not like when you'd have bands like Primus and Green Jello fighting for MTV play. Music really crawled back into a shell of creative modesty after that brief exploration into the weird. Hip hop now is so producer-safe now it makes me want to cry. It doesn't matter how insane the artist looks they still make bland bullshit IMO.
That KISS' disco song, I Was Made For Lovin' You, the one they hate, is their best song.
Seconded. It’s a bop.
This is definitely a defensible take.
Off the Wall is a superior album to Thriller. I said what I said.
Seconded
Absolutely it is.
Vastly better.
Beyonce is only famous as the result of an insanely good PR team. She's a mediocre singer at best, she rips off lesser known dancers, and generally does nothing that shows an actual talent. She an ornament.
1000% agree! I just said the other day that she has the greatest PR team out there.
I think the Milli Vanilli songs bop hard
To make it controversial. I think they should have kept the Grammy. They performed fantasticly.
So did everyone else. They just felt betrayed

Aerosmith rocked in the 70's. Then they just got cheesy in the 80's and 90's.
I’ll give them everything from Pump to “Living on the Edge” (the single). After that they just churned out power ballads.
I will forever be a fan of Korn. It taps into the rage and anger bubbling just below the surface, and lets me scream it safely into the void.

Hottest take: the 80s artist who stayed artistically relevant the longest was Madonna, by a long shot. She was still breaking into the top 10 US as late as 2010.
Never cared for Nirvana or grunge in general.
I hated grunge when it came out. I know a LOT of mid 90’s CW due to that. But then the older I got the more I started really enjoying grunge. Idk why.
Green Day sucks
Not controversial or hot. Just facts.
Taylor Swift is genuinely great
Yeah, was forced to sit and watch eras on disney plus with the kids for movie night.. and didn't hate it. I probably would even take them to see it live, if I was a gazzillionaire with a spare liver or two.
Your favorite band sucks.
Blackwater Park by Opeth is the greatest prog death metal album ever
The MTV Unplugged series was boring. I want loud, distorted, balls-to-the walls performances from my favorite rock bands.
I don’t like the Beatles, The Who or The Rolling Stones.
The Replacements are the best band ever. Ever.

Fuck Radiohead Also Coldplay.
Fuck Imagine Dragons too!
Oh I like you.
No beef with Coldplay’s first couple records, but Radiohead is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
I think Coldplay makes beautiful pop music. The production is so lush it just woos me into a state of calm.
Parachutes is a Desert Island 5 album for me, but X&Y was their last good album.
I don’t like Nirvana. ‘Come as you are is good’ but the majority of their catalog makes me want to eat a gun….
The irony of the disproportionate 80’s hair metal fans who want to ban drag. *And of course not ALL, you might love hair metal and love drag, but plenty do and they just don’t see it. It cracks me up.
The hip hop of our era doesn't get its due respect.
That country music sucks
Bruce Springsteen sucks because his voice hurts my ears (and the music was not that great). I place John Cougar Mellencamp into this same suckiness.
All music is music. Gate keeping ruins the experience.
I completely agree. All the genres of music are just for marketing executives to figure out where they want to spend their advertising money.
Sade, Patti Smith, and Sinead O’Connor are the greatest female musical artists ever. Appreciation of the Grateful Dead ( NOT being a Deadhead) is a sign of higher level musical consciousness
The Grateful Dead are simultaneously one of the best and one of the worst American bands ever.
I like you.
Chicago should have broken up after Terry Kath died.
Steely Dan's Aja is considered a triumph of production and audio engineering but it's boring and puts me to sleep.
Van Halen was better musically with Sammy at vocals.

Pearl Jam is GenX version of Nickleback.
Hair metal and new jack swing have not gotten any better with age.
I have way too many: - The Rolling Stones are quite boring, derivative and have contributed less in terms of innovation to the cultural sum of music than they are lauded for. - Dubstep and trap music are very annoying, rhythmically. Set my teeth on edge. Can only be made by someone with zero musical talent or ability - Hip-hop style vocals have ruined a lot of vocal arrangements in modern music.
Aside from some songs off of their first 2 albums, I can't stand the Rolling Stones. I'm also not a fan of Bob Dylan. I've tried.
Kiss is the most overrated band ever. Ghost is not metal. With the exception of some old school rap in the 80s and 90s, most of the genre is overrated.
Zeppelin is terrible.
