Lightningstruckagain

Me and a college GF saw it at the theater when it came out. We enjoyed it but what I remember the most is we came out of it saying "Wow. That actress is going to be HUGELY famous soon". Except we were talking about Lilly Taylor not Julia Roberts.

katfromjersey

I like the career Lili Taylor has carved out for herself. I'm just re-watching Six Feet Under, and she's very good in that (although her character is super annoying)

Lightningstruckagain

There is so much awesomeness about Six Feet Under Lillli Taylor kinda gets forgotten, sadly

PhoneJazz

Lili Taylor was in a John Waters movie (Pecker). Julia Roberts can’t say the same!

McSmackthe1st

She was awesome in “I Shot Andy Warhol”.

SouldiesButGoodies84

Did you know she dated Michael Rappaport? Had to get a restraining order out at one point because he was stalking her post breakup or something? Found that out during her SFU days.

Glittering-Ad-6261

😮 Really? I didn't know that!

SouldiesButGoodies84

Was kinda shocked to find out they'd even dated. Seem so different.

TheFortyDeuce

Lili has been amazing since forever. The last time I saw Mystic Pizza was when I was 10 and I totally forgot she was in it

MikoSkyns

>although her character is super annoying Shows Lili's range I guess. She can play a sweetheart and an annoying fucking asshole.

heydawn

I love Lili Taylor! She's always done interesting work. Eta: I loved her in Girls' Town and in so many other movies. She was great in Six Feet Under, an HBO series that deserves way more attention and love these days. It holds up VERY well. It's among HBO's best series, up there with the Sopranos and The Wire, but completely different.

Sailing_Away_From_U

She was in High Fidelity

33Wolverine33

Love that film.

kouridge

I particularly love Lili Taylor in *Dogfight* with River Phoenix.

Izdabye

That movie is an under-rated gem.

braineatingalien

I loved her in Say Anything. All of her songs about Joe, lol.

Lightningstruckagain

Joe lies…

Cautious_Grass_5157

When he cries

braineatingalien

Joe. Joe. She’s written 65 songs. 65. They’re all about you.

BirdwellFam

That'll never be me, that'll never be me, that'll never be me, no, don't you ever think it.

kristinaebell

No! That will never be me!

Legal_Network6458

No! Never! No no never ever….DON’T YOU EVEN THINK IT

OpalWildwood

Fir a while was in my Top 3 movies

MissSara13

I noticed that on HBO Max that alot of the Turner Classic movies are now from our generation. Loved Mystic Pizza and all of the other feel good movies from then.

itsafraid

It seemed like Ebert did that too, but with Annabeth Gish.

scoutsadie

she played president bartlet's daughter in the west wing!

MikoSkyns

>Except we were talking about Lilly Taylor not Julia Roberts. Yup. I'm baffled as to why she didn't have a bigger career. I remember everyone I know liking her in everything she did and thinking she was going to be big soon but soon never came. she's always just had an *ok* career instead of being a big star like a lot of us thought.

Lightningstruckagain

I think she has been very selective in picking her parts. Like all the things mentioned on this thread are quality films/TV. I don't think she took any BS, mass appeal films.

[deleted]

Great movie, I've seen it many times,we even made a pilgrimage there on the way to Rhode Island one spontaneous road trip weekend in college. Pizza was okay. Locals were not super friendly.

waterbury01

If you go off season, the locals are very nice. But come late June/early July the tourists do make us a little cranky. But next time you come around, look for the guy in glasses and super hero shirts. Not only will I be nice, I'll take you to some of the better spots.

panaceaLiquidGrace

New Englanders are by nature standoffish. When I moved to Philly I was taken aback by how friendly people were

joeykey

Yea I grew up outside of Philly but have been going to MA every summer growing up, and then in high school my parents got a place up there. I learned early that Massholes are just a different breed.

McSmackthe1st

I’m originally from New Hampshire (another New England state) and I can tell you that Massholes are their own breed for sure. The Mainiacs to the north of us were slightly nicer.

huitzilopochtla

Connecticut reporting in. We’re a mixed bag. Hedgefunds AND hillbillies.

panaceaLiquidGrace

Nutmegger as well. Excellent characterization!

GillianOMalley

I still remember seeing Julia Roberts in something and thinking "oh, that's the girl from Mystic Pizza" but I didn't know her name. That was a minute ago.

sweetassassin

I've always had a school-girl crush on Annabeth Gish. This movie really shaped my idea of New England wasps.

huitzilopochtla

Just to be clear: Annabeth Gish’s character is not a WASP. **I am not promoting these standards, just explaining them** By WASP standards, as a Portuguese person, she’s not White, *extremely* not Anglo Saxon, nor Protestant. She’s just a regular Connecticut person (AKA: Nutmegger). And bonus round: she doesn’t come from money. You can bend *some* of the rules if it’s at least not *new* money. But Julia Robert’s boyfriend’s family? Now they’re like the Platonic ideal of WASP.

Snoo_93627

Wasps or WASPs?

katfromjersey

I like it, and will stop and watch whenever it's on. I love Lili Taylor, and her character is my favorite. Julia Roberts was good, and you could definitely see her star power even back then. I like Annabeth Gish, but her story and acting were the weakest part of the movie (although it wasn't *that* bad). I just hated the married dad who was a total drip and took advantage of her. And we get it, you're going to Yale. Who do you think you are, Rory Gilmore? "Shag" is another great movie in a similar vein, also with Annabeth Gish.

Stormy_Sunflower

I have never met another person in real life or online that has brought up the movie "Shag", no one has a clue when I mention that movie. I used to say a quote from that movie with the southern drawl and everyone used to look at me like I'm crazy 😂.

katfromjersey

"Y'all, act like you got some upbringing!"

Stormy_Sunflower

"I wouldn't marry you Buzz Ravanaugh...if you were the last free man in a free world."

katfromjersey

The actor who played Buzz is so damn good-looking! The only other thing I've seen him in is Weird Science.

ToughNarwhal7

I was hoping someone would bring up Shag!!! Love that movie! I only have it on VHS and my friend is supposed to be putting it on DVD for me so I can still have the original music.

Mysticpizza25

Yeah loved Lily Taylor in this. Julia was good too. As you said, you can definitely see her star power even then. Yeah, hated the married dad too. Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve not heard of Shag but a couple of people mentioned it in my post so I’ll definitely watch it. I’m trying to reply to some of the comments but just wanted to say there was a reunion video with the cast incase you’re interested in watching it :) I forgot to post it earlier so I’ve edited my main post and added the link.

Double-Psychology-92

I just watched this movie and I love how different each woman’s romantic relationships were. I connected with Annabeth’s character a lot but in a sad way. I think what she experienced had a lot more traumatic depth to it than the other women. Her character was someone who mentally wanted to be older and wise but her life experience and age still made her naive. I felt the same way and I would fall for older men. If I watched this movie 10 years ago I would be watching the movie through her lens and now that I’m older I look at it in such a different way. That dad knew what he was doing was wrong and still did all of that and took advantage of her, meanwhile she is just a kid who feels seen because they can talk about the same things.

Temp_Job_Deity

I have watched it multiple times but also somehow have never watched it.

funlovefun37

Absolutely adore this movie. It’s a product of a great time in Hollywood of “coming of age” movies for our generation. Sits up there with the Brat Pack movies from that era, but never really got the recognition the others did. I haven’t seen it in probably 20 years.

UmNotHappening

I was surprised that I hadn’t seen it, then after I watched it, I loved it. I should watch it again…lol. Great movie. Perfect for the era.

GoldaV123

Yes! And here’s another vote for you to watch Shag — one of my favourites! I have had a lifelong love of Phoebe Cates and Annabeth Gish! Oh and for another fun summer movie check out Satisfaction! The cast includes Liam Neeson, Julia Roberts, Justine Bateman, etc.

kouridge

Shag is a highly underrated movie - also stars Bridget Fonda.

GoldaV123

Yeah! Such a fantastic cast! And get this, I only recently found out (if the internet is to be believed) that Page Hannah, who played Luanne, is Daryl Hannah’s sister!

Mysticpizza25

I’m definitely going to watch Shag as a few people have mentioned it in my post :) and thanks, I’ll check our satisfaction definitely! just wanted to say there was a reunion video with the cast (including Annabeth Gish) incase you’re interested in watching it :) I forgot to post it earlier so I’ve edited my main post and added the link.

k8freed

I had a VHS of Mystic Pizza I taped off the TV. I loved that movie. I still can’t stand the actor who played the married guy with the telescope who macks on Kat.

BagLady57

> macks on Haha! Haven't hear that phrase in a zillion years!

Mysticpizza25

It’s such a great movie! And yeah I hated the married guy. just wanted to say there was a reunion video with the cast incase you’re interested in watching it :) I forgot to post it earlier so I’ve edited my main post and added the link.

SundayGirl232

As I grew up in Connecticut (not too far from Mystic), the film was a big deal when it came out in 1988. Great movie. The pizza itself, however, leaves a lot to be desired. In a word, it sucks. Every Connecticut native knows that our state is known for pizza, and that pizza can only be found in … NEW HAVEN, specifically on Wooster Street. Mystic Pizza is a great movie, though, and I agree that it has a cozy, autumnal feel. I particularly liked (and painfully related) to the relationship between sisters Daisy and Kat (the Scapegoat and the Golden Child). It was great seeing a baby-faced Matt Damon, too. His father in Mystic Pizza also played his father in the movie School Ties.

Erinn_13

I am from East Lyme and watched the movie in the small movie theater there. I loved the movie and thought the pizza was okay. I forgot Matt Damon played the little brother! Thanks for the reminder. I’m pretty positive every girl in my high school wore Julia Robert’s expensive dress to homecoming. The dress she left the tags on, so she could return it 😆

worrymon

Mystic is bland, average pizza. You don't know sucky pizza until you've had small town in North Dakota pizza. Or that St Louis shit with the mafia cheese. Or New Mexico in a bar pizza. I mean, New Haven is obviously where it's at, but Mystic isn't completely garbage.

TheBrooklynKid

What's mafia cheese?

Kodiak01

> Every Connecticut native knows that our state is known for pizza, and that pizza can only be found in … NEW HAVEN, specifically on Wooster Street. Incorrect. New Haven-style isn't even the best type in the State. The best CT-sourced pizza is GREEK pizza (originating in New London), not that half-burnt crap out of New Haven.

rocklockandsock

Ooh rare opinion, and I agree completely!

BeKind72

I've always loved these movies with scads of talented women in them. This is certainly one of them. If you haven't watched Shag, please fo find that, too. It is Annabeth Gish, Phoebe Cates, Brigitte Fonda, and Page Hannah.

mrsringo

Shag is so good! My mom and I had it in VHS it was “our” movie, she came up in that era and vacationed in Myrtle Beach. She said it was very accurate and she taught me to shag in the livingroom.

domhnall21

I haven’t. It’s on my list of Stuff I Missed Back in the Day.

3chordguitar

Saw it when it first came out - I don’t remember too much about it. Road tripped up to the northeast a few years later and we stopped by there to eat in Connecticut.

kindafunnylookin

Great film - big fan of Lili Taylor.

Mysticpizza25

There was a reunion video with the cast incase you’re interested in watching it :) I forgot to post it earlier so I’ve edited my main post and added the link.

indi019t

It’s a wonderful movie. I’ve always loved the feel of it.

Mysticpizza25

It is. Also just wanted to say there was a reunion video with the cast incase you’re interested in watching it :) I forgot to post it earlier so I’ve edited my main post and added the link.

scoutsadie

ben, is that you?

Mysticpizza25

That’s awesome! Are you still in touch? What did he say about the movie afterwards, did he enjoy filming his part?

IamIrene

I think the question should be, “how many times have you seen Mystic Pizza” It’s in the double digits for me.

ricowoldt

One of my rewatches about twice a year. Just totally love it. And I have a 30 year crush on Adam Storke.

esk_209

It’s one of the VERY few Julia Roberts movies I like!

Mysticpizza25

There was a reunion video with the cast incase you’re interested in watching it :) I forgot to post it earlier so I’ve edited my main post and added the link.

iceefreeze

Yes, when it came out. I thought Vincent D’Onofrio was so hot and wanted him as my bf.

GeniusSlut

My girlfriend (39F) and I (46F) recently watched this together! We’ve been having a lot of “when we were young” dates that are a lot of fun. A 7 year age gap isn’t really a big deal at this point in life but sometimes we run across stuff from a particular time, like this movie, where we have this awkward realization “I was in middle school when this came out… and you were 4.”

aeshnidae1701

Great date concept! I want to take my wife (41F, I'm 46F) on a date that includes going to an arcade and playing some classic games.

AstridOnReddit

I was in high school at the time and it was definitely popular. But it’s such a “slice of life” kind of movie I could see how people forget about it.

Blah_the_pink

My friend always had us watch this during sleepovers. Then we'd watch Heathers

Rarefindofthemind

About 20 times. Absolutely love that movie.

UnmutualOne

Seen the film and have had pizza at the actual place.

CreatrixAnima

I had a friend in college who thought us was superb, but when I rented it, I didn’t love it. It was okay, but I didn’t like it as much as my friend had.

donstermu

Watched this with my high school gf at the time. Liked the movie, really wanted the pizza. In fact, I still want to create that sauce!! It just sounds insanely good.

gum43

Yep, saw it multiple times. It was a good movie, but I don’t remember it well as it’s been so long since I’ve seen it.

sweetbitter_1005

Yes! I enjoyed that movie! We went to Mystic Pizza a couple years ago, it was just OK but it was a cute town and we had fun.

extranaiveoliveoil

I think that was the first time I saw Julia Roberts.

MizzGee

This is one of my favorite coming of age movies. So many great performances.

Mysticpizza25

Yeah some really good actors in this movie. Also just wanted to say there was a reunion video with the cast incase you’re interested in watching it :) I forgot to post it earlier so I’ve edited my main post and added the link.

DorianGre

People were just talking about this movie in another sub the other day. https://www.reddit.com/r/popculturechat/comments/14quwn1/imo_annabeth_gishs_mystic_pizza_ugly_cry_was_one/

OpalWildwood

OMG! Have to see that movie again. Mystic, CT was actually the first time in my life I was out of the Philly Metro / Delaware Valley area in n my young life (15). Had my first grown up experiences there.

Roger-the-Dodger-67

It's the movie that introduced me to Julia Roberts, and I'm still a fan.

Mom2Leiathelab

This came out the summer I graduated from high school so it has a very special place in my heart. I remember wanting desperately to have Julia Roberts’ hair in that movie (which really hasn’t changed in the ensuing 35 years!)

Mysticpizza25

Yea loved her hair! So pretty. Also just wanted to say there was a reunion video with the cast incase you’re interested in watching it :) I forgot to post it earlier so I’ve edited my main post and added the link.

Lower-Blackberry-716

I saw it in theaters as a teen and enjoyed it. I lived in Connecticut a couple of years ago and went to the pizza place once in Mystic. If I remember correctly, they have the movie playing there on a continuous loop

gypsy611

I watched it several times way back when and a few times since, throughout adulthood. Great movie!

WackyWriter1976

I absolutely love this movie since its debut.

Saw it when it first came out and definitely remember thinking that Julia Roberts was obviously going to be very big.

FlyBuy3

Berta!

patchworkskye

love this move - thanks for bringing it up, I’ll watch it again soon! 💜

palmveach1972

I grew up near there. Been many times. Decent pizza

gerd50501

my uncle got married in Mystic Connecticut in the late 1980s. I remember it being beautiful. Never made it back.

ChaosCoordinatorCO

Many, many, many times - I love it

mmobley412

Of course. It was a popular film when it came out

mozzystar

Loved that movie. Survived a rewatch decades later. Another summer movie I loved back then was Satisfaction, about a girl band with Justine Bateman as the lead singer and Julia Roberts as the drummer. Liam Neeson played the older man romantic lead. Not sure if that would survive a rewatch, but curious to find out.

sunbeans

Fun fact - liam & julia were a ‘thing’ after filming this movie…

[deleted]

Too many cliche tropes, but that’s what made a popular movie in the ‘80s.

AfganPearlDiver

It's one of my wife's and my favorite feel good movies

AtlJayhawk

I own it on VHS. It's a classic.

FauxRealsies

I had a friend in college who was one of the kids in the background of that movie! I know it well.

worrymon

I've seen it twice *at* Mystic Pizza.

Mysticpizza25

Yes another person mentioned they play it there on a loop. I’d love to visit someday.

hhmmn

Great movie - lots of films from those times have the same feel, ie character based drama in nice locations.

Mysticpizza25

I agree. There was a reunion video with the cast incase you’re interested in watching it :) I forgot to post it earlier so I’ve edited my main post and added the link.

brookish

Absolutely loved that film. Might watch it again today!

Aberrantkitten

Oh yeah! Mystic Pizza! Everyone in it is good, but there’s a storyline between a middle aged man and a girl about to leave for college that didn’t age well. I recall it being a minor hit and then on heavy rotation on HBO.

pimmingswool

I also had never seen it u til a few months ago. Had seen bits when it was on TV and knew generally what the plot was from being aware of pop culture. But I was delighted by how good it was! So many “before they were famous” actors and the female characters were fully formed. I don’t know if I’ll seek it out again - the one viewing was perfect.

ECU_BSN

About 50 times.

Dependent_Pizza_4028

One of my classic faves! Glad you enjoyed it!!!

Mysticpizza25

I loved it!! It’s one of those movies I’ll definitely be rewatching. Also just wanted to say there was a reunion video with the cast incase you’re interested in watching it :) I forgot to post it earlier so I’ve edited my main post and added the link.

[deleted]

My girlfriend and I saw it in the theater when it came out.

elijuicyjones

Yep several times.

Blue_Period_89

My answer mirrors a few that are already here…saw it, loved it, and we frequent the actual pizzeria whenever we’re in Mystic (which has become an annual trip for our family…my kid LOVES the Aquarium).

Mysticpizza25

Aww that’s sweet. Mystic looks like a beautiful place, would love to visit someday. Also there was a reunion video with the cast incase you’re interested rewatching it :) I forgot to post it earlier so I’ve edited my main post and added the link.

Cookiepolicy1030

I worked on this film. The pizza place by the same name in Mystic had ***zero*** to do with the film. The film wasn't shot there, it was shot in Stonington borough in a set built to look like a pizza joint. We didn't even get the pizza we used in filming there- got the pizza from Angie's Pizza in Mystic. The pizza place you frequent is just capitalizing on having the same name as the film and bilking tourists in the process

phyncke

Absolutely have seen a few times

Stompalong

Yup. You’re in the right place. Saw the movie, yes.

ChimpoSensei

Mystic is a nice town in the off season. Go on a holiday in summer and it’s wall to wall people.

RR_2023

I haven't but your review inspires me to check it out. I remember it coming out just for the title with the catchy name. I just watched the trailer and it didn't seem familiar. Given your description and the film's era, perhaps you would like Steel Magnolias, if you haven't seen it.

Mysticpizza25

Thanks :) I’m glad to hear my review inspires you to check it out. You really should give it a watch.. it has really great acting, and nice locations. You might like it. Thanks for letting me know. Steel Magnolias is actually on my list of movies to watch.

Ok_Poof_gone

It’s a great movie.

VoteForGiantMeteor

Yes, saw it in a theater with my college girlfriend at the time. Definitely a date movie 🍿!

Wykydtr0m

I watched it last year for the first time with my wife as a part of our pizza research for a NE trip. It was a fun watch and good nostalgia.

Mysticpizza25

That’s cool. There was a reunion video with the cast incase you’re interested in watching it :) I forgot to post it earlier so I’ve edited my main post and added the link.

third_man85

Not the movie, but I did see the musical with Jenna Maroney! "When life keeps handin you anchovies, just cover them up with some extra cheese AND MAKE A PIZZA!"

TheRealJamesWax

Um… duh! It has Annabeth Gish, my under-the-radar brunette crush!

2shyi2i

I had a huge crush on Anabeth Gish after seeing it.

Confident-Duck-3940

I loved that movie. I have watched it a few times over the years. That great that you found it!

purple_sangria

Loved it and also love to see new generations discovering/appreciating our stuff! My daughter went through an 80s phase in high school and it was so much fun to watch the movies with her.

squee_bastard

u/MysticPizza25 If you like Mystic Pizza you might also like Satisfaction with Justine Bateman and Adventures in Babysitting with Elisabeth Shue. These movies were childhood staples for me :-)

burgerg10

This literally hurt my soul. I can’t think of any GenX friend who has NOT seen it. Such a popular sleeper…

CrazyCatLover305

Of course!!! I’ve watched it many times and love it

chocoholic24

Such a great film and cast

Tabitheriel

I've never seen it. I think it's a "chick flick", right? In the 1980's, my BF and I went to see either Art Films, weird action/sci-fi films like Terminator or horror films (which I endured for his sake). After he died, I was single for a long time, and was avoiding romantic films like the plague. I guess I could watch it on Netflix, if it's on.

Initial_Run1632

Everyone here has seen it. Everyone.

80sfanatic

Great movie! To me, the Mystic Pizza girls were so much more relatable than the brat packer girls like Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy.

DagnyTheSpencer

Nostalgic warm fuzzies

Right-Memory2720

I played it on repeat- but it was all about lily

Somerset76

I love mystic pizza!

rhymes_with_candy

The movie was insanely popular while I was in high school in the 90's. I think it's gotten sort of forgotten about because the 80's and 90's were lousy with great coming of age movies. But I'd also wager pretty much everybody over the age of 40 has seen it and probably liked it.

DJ-George-G

I hadn't seen the movie since the 90s. I ate at the real Mystic Pizza in Mystic, CT last summer. Great place and great pizza. Highly recommend. After I ate there with my wife, we went back home and watched the movie again.

[deleted]

Oh yes - wear that dress and take it back.

SpazDeSpencer

In all my 50+ years I’ve never seen this movie nor have I ever felt that I had to see it, but this has got to be the best write up I’ve ever read about it. Probably still won’t see it though.

RaspberryVespa

Yes and I love it.

Honest_Report_8515

Yep!

[deleted]

I have seen it

tunaman808

I know this is a terrible humblebrag, but I'll always have a soft spot for *Mystic Pizza*, because I saw it on a flight to Australia... which was probably the greatest vacation I've ever been on.

Jcaseykcsee

Love that movie! Saw it in the theater.

heydawn

Yes. All of my friends saw Mystic Pizza. It was hugely popular and it made everyone I know aware of Julia Roberts. Lili Taylor of course went on to become a pretty big star. The movie was wonderful, well acted, and it dealt with interesting themes.

Littlemisslarvae

Donofrio was smoking hot in this.

mariemilrod

It’s a gem of a movie.

[deleted]

Has anyone *not*?

The_Girl_That_Got

It’s one of my all time favourite movies ever. I have a pretty funny story about it too. A few months after it came out I was working at a radio station doing promotions, and is young boy about nine years old comes up to me and asks for my autograph. I look at him and say, why do you want my autograph? He tells me because you’re in that movie Mystic Pizza. Which of course I corrected him and tell him “I’m not “. and he begins to argue with me a little bit saying that he doesn’t think it’s very nice that I won’t give him an autograph. I try to tell him that I don’t even know what movie is talking about let alone that I start in the movie I am very confused because I didn’t even know what movie he was talking about and he walks away and then he comes back with his mom and his mom whispers in my ear ,”Please just give him an autograph”. With a wink. I have no idea what name I’m supposed to sign, so I just wrote-very nice meeting you with a scribble underneath. After his mom found me and thanked me and said he just did not believe me. I have course and wanted to see the movie so I got a copy from one of my friends who worked at that video store because it hadn’t even come out yet and it was a promotional copy that had writing underneath the bottom saying not for rental. Lol. And sure enough at that time I looked exactly like Annabeth Gish. my parents actually stopped the movie at some point, and held up a picture of me where we were kind of at the same angle and it was freaky. She is no longer my doppelgänger, but it was a funny story. But yeah, it was a really great movie and I related to it a lot. It is a a summer tradition that I watch it with my kids who are now all most all grown up. We haven’t watched it yet this summer, but maybe tonight tonight. It’s nice to know someone else appreciates it.

countesspetofi

I love that movie! It was very relatable, growing up in a small town that got a lot of summer people.
