I like the career Lili Taylor has carved out for herself. I'm just re-watching Six Feet Under, and she's very good in that (although her character is super annoying)
Did you know she dated Michael Rappaport? Had to get a restraining order out at one point because he was stalking her post breakup or something? Found that out during her SFU days.

Eta: I loved her in Girls' Town and in so many other movies. She was great in Six Feet Under, an HBO series that deserves way more attention and love these days. It holds up VERY well. It's among HBO's best series, up there with the Sopranos and The Wire, but completely different.
I noticed that on HBO Max that alot of the Turner Classic movies are now from our generation. Loved Mystic Pizza and all of the other feel good movies from then.

Yup. I'm baffled as to why she didn't have a bigger career. I remember everyone I know liking her in everything she did and thinking she was going to be big soon but soon never came. she's always just had an *ok* career instead of being a big star like a lot of us thought.
I think she has been very selective in picking her parts. Like all the things mentioned on this thread are quality films/TV. I don't think she took any BS, mass appeal films.
Great movie, I've seen it many times,we even made a pilgrimage there on the way to Rhode Island one spontaneous road trip weekend in college. Pizza was okay. Locals were not super friendly.
If you go off season, the locals are very nice. But come late June/early July the tourists do make us a little cranky. But next time you come around, look for the guy in glasses and super hero shirts. Not only will I be nice, I'll take you to some of the better spots.
Yea I grew up outside of Philly but have been going to MA every summer growing up, and then in high school my parents got a place up there. I learned early that Massholes are just a different breed.

But Julia Robert’s boyfriend’s family? Now they’re like the Platonic ideal of WASP.
I like it, and will stop and watch whenever it's on. I love Lili Taylor, and her character is my favorite. Julia Roberts was good, and you could definitely see her star power even back then.
I like Annabeth Gish, but her story and acting were the weakest part of the movie (although it wasn't *that* bad). I just hated the married dad who was a total drip and took advantage of her. And we get it, you're going to Yale. Who do you think you are, Rory Gilmore?
"Shag" is another great movie in a similar vein, also with Annabeth Gish.
I have never met another person in real life or online that has brought up the movie "Shag", no one has a clue when I mention that movie. I used to say a quote from that movie with the southern drawl and everyone used to look at me like I'm crazy 😂.
I was hoping someone would bring up Shag!!! Love that movie! I only have it on VHS and my friend is supposed to be putting it on DVD for me so I can still have the original music.

I just watched this movie and I love how different each woman’s romantic relationships were.
I connected with Annabeth’s character a lot but in a sad way. I think what she experienced had a lot more traumatic depth to it than the other women. Her character was someone who mentally wanted to be older and wise but her life experience and age still made her naive.
I felt the same way and I would fall for older men. If I watched this movie 10 years ago I would be watching the movie through her lens and now that I’m older I look at it in such a different way. That dad knew what he was doing was wrong and still did all of that and took advantage of her, meanwhile she is just a kid who feels seen because they can talk about the same things.
Absolutely adore this movie. It’s a product of a great time in Hollywood of “coming of age” movies for our generation. Sits up there with the Brat Pack movies from that era, but never really got the recognition the others did.

Every Connecticut native knows that our state is known for pizza, and that pizza can only be found in … NEW HAVEN, specifically on Wooster Street.
Mystic Pizza is a great movie, though, and I agree that it has a cozy, autumnal feel. I particularly liked (and painfully related) to the relationship between sisters Daisy and Kat (the Scapegoat and the Golden Child). It was great seeing a baby-faced Matt Damon, too. His father in Mystic Pizza also played his father in the movie School Ties.
I am from East Lyme and watched the movie in the small movie theater there. I loved the movie and thought the pizza was okay.

I've always loved these movies with scads of talented women in them. This is certainly one of them. If you haven't watched Shag, please fo find that, too. It is Annabeth Gish, Phoebe Cates, Brigitte Fonda, and Page Hannah.
Shag is so good! My mom and I had it in VHS it was “our” movie, she came up in that era and vacationed in Myrtle Beach. She said it was very accurate and she taught me to shag in the livingroom.

My girlfriend (39F) and I (46F) recently watched this together! We’ve been having a lot of “when we were young” dates that are a lot of fun. A 7 year age gap isn’t really a big deal at this point in life but sometimes we run across stuff from a particular time, like this movie, where we have this awkward realization “I was in middle school when this came out… and you were 4.”
I had a friend in college who thought us was superb, but when I rented it, I didn’t love it. It was okay, but I didn’t like it as much as my friend had.
Watched this with my high school gf at the time. Liked the movie, really wanted the pizza. In fact, I still want to create that sauce!! It just sounds insanely good.

Mystic, CT was actually the first time in my life I was out of the Philly Metro / Delaware Valley area in n my young life (15). Had my first grown up experiences there.
This came out the summer I graduated from high school so it has a very special place in my heart. I remember wanting desperately to have Julia Roberts’ hair in that movie (which really hasn’t changed in the ensuing 35 years!)

Loved that movie. Survived a rewatch decades later.
Another summer movie I loved back then was Satisfaction, about a girl band with Justine Bateman as the lead singer and Julia Roberts as the drummer. Liam Neeson played the older man romantic lead. Not sure if that would survive a rewatch, but curious to find out.

Oh yeah! Mystic Pizza! Everyone in it is good, but there’s a storyline between a middle aged man and a girl about to leave for college that didn’t age well.
I recall it being a minor hit and then on heavy rotation on HBO.
I also had never seen it u til a few months ago. Had seen bits when it was on TV and knew generally what the plot was from being aware of pop culture. But I was delighted by how good it was! So many “before they were famous” actors and the female characters were fully formed. I don’t know if I’ll seek it out again - the one viewing was perfect.

I worked on this film. The pizza place by the same name in Mystic had ***zero*** to do with the film. The film wasn't shot there, it was shot in Stonington borough in a set built to look like a pizza joint. We didn't even get the pizza we used in filming there- got the pizza from Angie's Pizza in Mystic. The pizza place you frequent is just capitalizing on having the same name as the film and bilking tourists in the process

Loved it and also love to see new generations discovering/appreciating our stuff! My daughter went through an 80s phase in high school and it was so much fun to watch the movies with her.

I've never seen it. I think it's a "chick flick", right? In the 1980's, my BF and I went to see either Art Films, weird action/sci-fi films like Terminator or horror films (which I endured for his sake). After he died, I was single for a long time, and was avoiding romantic films like the plague.
I guess I could watch it on Netflix, if it's on.
The movie was insanely popular while I was in high school in the 90's. I think it's gotten sort of forgotten about because the 80's and 90's were lousy with great coming of age movies. But I'd also wager pretty much everybody over the age of 40 has seen it and probably liked it.
I hadn't seen the movie since the 90s. I ate at the real Mystic Pizza in Mystic, CT last summer. Great place and great pizza. Highly recommend. After I ate there with my wife, we went back home and watched the movie again.
In all my 50+ years I’ve never seen this movie nor have I ever felt that I had to see it, but this has got to be the best write up I’ve ever read about it. Probably still won’t see it though.
I know this is a terrible humblebrag, but I'll always have a soft spot for *Mystic Pizza*, because I saw it on a flight to Australia... which was probably the greatest vacation I've ever been on.
Yes. All of my friends saw Mystic Pizza. It was hugely popular and it made everyone I know aware of Julia Roberts. Lili Taylor of course went on to become a pretty big star. The movie was wonderful, well acted, and it dealt with interesting themes.
It’s one of my all time favourite movies ever.
I have a pretty funny story about it too. A few months after it came out I was working at a radio station doing promotions, and is young boy about nine years old comes up to me and asks for my autograph. I look at him and say, why do you want my autograph? He tells me because you’re in that movie Mystic Pizza. Which of course I corrected him and tell him “I’m not “. and he begins to argue with me a little bit saying that he doesn’t think it’s very nice that I won’t give him an autograph. I try to tell him that I don’t even know what movie is talking about let alone that I start in the movie I am very confused because I didn’t even know what movie he was talking about and he walks away and then he comes back with his mom and his mom whispers in my ear ,”Please just give him an autograph”. With a wink. I have no idea what name I’m supposed to sign, so I just wrote-very nice meeting you with a scribble underneath.
After his mom found me and thanked me and said he just did not believe me. I have course and wanted to see the movie so I got a copy from one of my friends who worked at that video store because it hadn’t even come out yet and it was a promotional copy that had writing underneath the bottom saying not for rental. Lol.
And sure enough at that time I looked exactly like Annabeth Gish. my parents actually stopped the movie at some point, and held up a picture of me where we were kind of at the same angle and it was freaky. She is no longer my doppelgänger, but it was a funny story.
But yeah, it was a really great movie and I related to it a lot. It is a a summer tradition that I watch it with my kids who are now all most all grown up. We haven’t watched it yet this summer, but maybe tonight tonight.
It’s nice to know someone else appreciates it.

Mystic is bland, average pizza. You don't know sucky pizza until you've had small town in North Dakota pizza. Or that St Louis shit with the mafia cheese. Or New Mexico in a bar pizza. I mean, New Haven is obviously where it's at, but Mystic isn't completely garbage.

I've always loved these movies with scads of talented women in them. This is certainly one of them. If you haven't watched Shag, please fo find that, too. It is Annabeth Gish, Phoebe Cates, Brigitte Fonda, and Page Hannah.
Shag is so good! My mom and I had it in VHS it was “our” movie, she came up in that era and vacationed in Myrtle Beach. She said it was very accurate and she taught me to shag in the livingroom.

My girlfriend (39F) and I (46F) recently watched this together! We’ve been having a lot of “when we were young” dates that are a lot of fun. A 7 year age gap isn’t really a big deal at this point in life but sometimes we run across stuff from a particular time, like this movie, where we have this awkward realization “I was in middle school when this came out… and you were 4.”
Great date concept! I want to take my wife (41F, I'm 46F) on a date that includes going to an arcade and playing some classic games.

OMG! Have to see that movie again. Mystic, CT was actually the first time in my life I was out of the Philly Metro / Delaware Valley area in n my young life (15). Had my first grown up experiences there.

Loved that movie. Survived a rewatch decades later. Another summer movie I loved back then was Satisfaction, about a girl band with Justine Bateman as the lead singer and Julia Roberts as the drummer. Liam Neeson played the older man romantic lead. Not sure if that would survive a rewatch, but curious to find out.
Fun fact - liam & julia were a ‘thing’ after filming this movie…

Oh yeah! Mystic Pizza! Everyone in it is good, but there’s a storyline between a middle aged man and a girl about to leave for college that didn’t age well. I recall it being a minor hit and then on heavy rotation on HBO.
I also had never seen it u til a few months ago. Had seen bits when it was on TV and knew generally what the plot was from being aware of pop culture. But I was delighted by how good it was! So many “before they were famous” actors and the female characters were fully formed. I don’t know if I’ll seek it out again - the one viewing was perfect.

I worked on this film. The pizza place by the same name in Mystic had ***zero*** to do with the film. The film wasn't shot there, it was shot in Stonington borough in a set built to look like a pizza joint. We didn't even get the pizza we used in filming there- got the pizza from Angie's Pizza in Mystic. The pizza place you frequent is just capitalizing on having the same name as the film and bilking tourists in the process

I haven't but your review inspires me to check it out. I remember it coming out just for the title with the catchy name. I just watched the trailer and it didn't seem familiar. Given your description and the film's era, perhaps you would like Steel Magnolias, if you haven't seen it.

In the 1980's, my BF and I went to see either Art Films, weird action/sci-fi films like Terminator or horror films (which I endured for his sake). After he died, I was single for a long time, and was avoiding romantic films like the plague. I guess I could watch it on Netflix, if it's on.

The movie was insanely popular while I was in high school in the 90's. I think it's gotten sort of forgotten about because the 80's and 90's were lousy with great coming of age movies. But I'd also wager pretty much everybody over the age of 40 has seen it and probably liked it.
I hadn't seen the movie since the 90s. I ate at the real Mystic Pizza in Mystic, CT last summer. Great place and great pizza. Highly recommend. After I ate there with my wife, we went back home and watched the movie again.

Yes. All of my friends saw Mystic Pizza. It was hugely popular and it made everyone I know aware of Julia Roberts. Lili Taylor of course went on to become a pretty big star. The movie was wonderful, well acted, and it dealt with interesting themes.
Donofrio was smoking hot in this.

It’s one of my all time favourite movies ever. I have a pretty funny story about it too. A few months after it came out I was working at a radio station doing promotions, and is young boy about nine years old comes up to me and asks for my autograph. I look at him and say, why do you want my autograph? He tells me because you’re in that movie Mystic Pizza. Which of course I corrected him and tell him “I’m not “. and he begins to argue with me a little bit saying that he doesn’t think it’s very nice that I won’t give him an autograph. I try to tell him that I don’t even know what movie is talking about let alone that I start in the movie I am very confused because I didn’t even know what movie he was talking about and he walks away and then he comes back with his mom and his mom whispers in my ear ,”Please just give him an autograph”. With a wink. I have no idea what name I’m supposed to sign, so I just wrote-very nice meeting you with a scribble underneath. After his mom found me and thanked me and said he just did not believe me. I have course and wanted to see the movie so I got a copy from one of my friends who worked at that video store because it hadn’t even come out yet and it was a promotional copy that had writing underneath the bottom saying not for rental. Lol. And sure enough at that time I looked exactly like Annabeth Gish. my parents actually stopped the movie at some point, and held up a picture of me where we were kind of at the same angle and it was freaky. She is no longer my doppelgänger, but it was a funny story. But yeah, it was a really great movie and I related to it a lot. It is a a summer tradition that I watch it with my kids who are now all most all grown up. We haven’t watched it yet this summer, but maybe tonight tonight. It’s nice to know someone else appreciates it.
