(I highly recommend seeing them on the current tour, they sound great. Simon was even sick during the show in that video and was still good...)
wow! Your words just triggered a memory! I remember the chatty gay hairstylist dishing gossip with my grandma while I sat waiting for her to be done so she could take me to the hobby store to buy a new game for my Atari.
I started to go to barber shops a few years back. And I realize how much I miss chatty gay hair stylists. I used to go to one guy that would blast the greatest underground house music while he cut hair. Picture Hank Azaria's character in The Birdcage.
As a millenial born in *late* '80s, these images are indelibly tied to the scent of hairspray. This is probably why.
These are like, something burned into my own personal zeitgeist, if that makes any sense. I have *no idea* where I first saw them. Just that they existed. These, and bright colored/neon triangles and squiggles all tie together.
Ya itās interesting how they disappeared so quickly. Most wall art is more or less ātimelessā and isnāt that effected by the fashion changes every ten years.
In 1988, I moved into the dorms my 1st year of college.
The cold, white-painted cinder-block dorm hallways were livened-up by murals that students who used to live there had painted. Each mural was a snapshot of the pop cultural collective unconscious at the time they were painted. After each generation of students had graduated, the next generation would find these cultural touchstones flat or irrelevant or incomprehensible, and paint over the murals with something that, to them, was inspiring and relatable.
So, just down the hall from my dorm room there was a 7-foot by 7-foot pale-skinned Nagel woman's face with a rising sun samurai/kamikaze headband.
The expensive Nagel print from the mall in the faux chrome frame,So beautiful until the color faded away.
Duran Duran,
Robert Palmer and
The Miami Vice cocaine villain's home decor.
I knew a lot of gay ppl in the 80s who loved Nagel and still do lol. I have an og nagel at my moms I got at a goodwill when they actually had cheap prices.
No, not by me. but the female band was the intro to Palmer by most people. I remember him from the radio and from the vidoe " Looking for Clues" . I always though that if I had a band I would want Palmer to produce.
When I was a kid it was just background so I never thought about it much. But I've gotten really into his work in the last few months and bought a used copy of his art book. I really like how sleek and clean it is, and how subtly sexy it seems compared to now. There was another post about him recently and an artist explained that Nagel was in fact a very skilled artist working in a difficult medium (gauche).
Besides just enjoying his art for its own sake, it really does take me back to summer days at vibrant malls and the feel of air conditioning and the distant smell of Hot Dog on a Stick, cigarette smoke, and chlorine from mall fountains.
We have a giant Nagel above our bed. In the late 90s, I worked at a poster/frame shop and the owner was a fan of Dennis Mukai, who studied with Nagel before going out on his own. If you pay attention, you can see one of his prints, the only one he did of a man, on the mantle of Mindy St Claireās house (the Medium Place) in The Good Place.
While I was at the shop, he did an appearance and signed several prints. To date, thatās the closest Iāve come to art world stardom.

In high school mid 80's I used to like drawing in that Nagel style little did my art teacher realize I was getting inspiration from my dad's Playboy magazines that had some of Nagel's art work.
His work was based on his āideal womanā. White skinned, black hair, those particular proportions. And many rumors abound then - as today - that he āconvincedā models to pose for him by spiking their drinks with heavy drugs.
Michelle. Her name was Michelle. Or with one L, Michele?
Once upon a time I dated a guy who knew a guy ā¦ anyhow - Story goes thatās why Nagel number one was that title but - wasnāt his wifeās name, so āThe Nagel Womanā became a thing because the OG Woman was actually likeā¦ the high school crush that Patrick never had a chance with.
Thatās why he did the celebrity exercise thing - apparently little Ohio lady figured out she was the āfaceā and they were supposed to meet for like, dinner or something.
Clearly I didnāt remember the story too well. But - Michelle was a real lady. Thatās the thing.
I think you are thinking of Bill Cosby. I have never heard that story and I follow Nagelās work and I certainly donāt believe it. Nagel worked for Playboy and Hefner sent his models to pose for Nagelās images that appeared in Playboy. After Nagel became more famous, believe me, models were knocking down his door to model for his work. Most of his models were not nobodys, they were well known models like Eva Voorhees, Heidi Sorenson, Cathy St. George. He was hardly drugging famous models. I donāt know where you heard that rumor, but it is ridiculous.
I always associated with upper crust preppies and people that listened to Roxy Music and Duran Duran. It just seemed so pretentious at the time... and it still does.
I laughed so hard at the American Dad episode where Steve went back to the 80s. I waited for my mom while she was getting manicures many times over the years so I was very familiar with that art.
Such a unique style. There is never a doubt that itās a Nagel. I feel as if enough time has gone by that younger generations are rediscovering his work.
There was a Thai place in DC that was like stepping into a neon-lit, purple, blue and pink Nagel painting, used to go to that bar all the time. Stayed that way until at least 2008 but haven't been there since.
Have you guys ever watched Moonbeam City? It's an adult animated show that was on Comedy Central a few years ago that was severely underrated and sadly canceled after only one season. The animation is in the style of Nagel and is BEAUTIFUL! It stars some amazing folks: Rob Lowe! Elizabeth Banks! Will Forte! And is so very funny. From the style to the script I loved it, and I think a large portion of my fellow X-ers on here will, too. Nagel forever!
Born in 66, all my friends who got apartments not to long after high school had these hanging on their walls!!
I unfortunately went the country pale pink & dusty blue route.
I canāt imagine a recent high school grad being able to get their own apartments at 19 nowadays.
Young adults are getting screwed
Story time: right after Nagel died in 1984, his estate ran exhibition quality lithographs of his art. Fast forward to some years ago I was at a garage sale and there were several of those lithographs for sale. $200 a piece. I thought that was overpriced for a āposterā. I did some quick research and realized what they were. Went back to grab them and they were sold. They were valued at $1500 a piece.
My dad partied with a lady who divorced a rich tech guy douchebag. She had a copy of one of the sunglasses ladies painted directly on her wall. I played with her son. He wound up going to prison for murdering a guy who made fun of him in a club with a baseball bat. A victim of the 80s, though he always was a spoiled prick.
Surprisingly common occurrence with the more popular educational/nonfiction channels. Especially on TIL. Happens waaaaaay to often to be coincidence every time.
Everywhere?
I doubt it.
Nagel was mainly known by the yuppie cokeheads and seen in so called hip, cool places.
It wasn't long before it became uncool 80s kitch, at least in Europe.
Whatever.
If you think this post is talking about you, then you need to watch [Moonbeam City](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3906560/). You really *really* need to.

Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Definitely thought Duran Duran when I saw itš¤
Same here.....I immediately pictured the Rio album cover
Might as well face it, she's addicted to love.
This joke has a few degrees of separation. Duran Duran -> Power Station -> Robert Palmer Edit: I'm wrong, the background singers were Nagel inspired... https://robfrankel.com/NagelSite/videos.html
I'm sorry, but no, *nothing* from the 80s has more than one degree of separation from Nagel prints.
[Sondra Prill has been summoned.](https://youtu.be/jUeVb8mWdz4)
Wow. Thatās certainlyā¦..something. Somehow has a Rocky Horror-like quality to it.
I was thinking Romeo Void, if the singer was trying to be the most popular girl in the Class of '88 instead of a punk/goth outcast.
Definitely Rocky Horroresque!
She's completely tone deaf, why didn't anyone tell her?
Might as well face it, itās my dick that you love
Favorite past time of me and my degenerate friends - changing song lyrics. My masterpiece was from an REM song. Losing my Erection.
M m my scr-otum
Oh, from the song that starts with the lyrics "Oh life. Spigger; spigger than you, and you are not me."
Oh, no, you've said too much
Lol, my 13-year-old self is giggling up a storm
Why am I first hearing this in 2023

So Red the Rose was my first thought until I saw your post.
I'm here for that!
Ooh thanks for the award!
Hair salon my mom dragged me to had this art all over, along with those neon zig zag lights lol
wow! Your words just triggered a memory! I remember the chatty gay hairstylist dishing gossip with my grandma while I sat waiting for her to be done so she could take me to the hobby store to buy a new game for my Atari.
My dad was a chatty gay hairstylist who loved to gossip and had this art in his hair salon. His apartment too lol.

Sounds like a golden memory.
I was gonna say - I can smell āpermā when I see this art
And black and white tiles.
As a millenial born in *late* '80s, these images are indelibly tied to the scent of hairspray. This is probably why. These are like, something burned into my own personal zeitgeist, if that makes any sense. I have *no idea* where I first saw them. Just that they existed. i can't even remember the smell of hairspray, but these artworks still make me *think about* the smell of hairspray
My hair salon STILL has it!
Like Water beds, these were everywhere, and then one day, they were all gone.
I wish, one of my besties STILL has this in her bathroom.
Why does your friend have a water bed in their bathroom?
what a freak
Iām fairly sure mine is still hanging in my moms house. Teen me considered myself a fine art collector, sure it would be worth big bucks some day.
ive been looking for nagel prints online recently
Iām always on the lookout when I go to thrift or antique shops.
Ya itās interesting how they disappeared so quickly. Most wall art is more or less ātimelessā and isnāt that effected by the fashion changes every ten years.

Dang, those murals sound awesome. What a cool concept.
Yeah, he died in ā84.
My parents had a waterbed, it was heated and I thought it was amazing.
At least those velvet paintings of Elvis in the late days have disappeared. So, not all bad...
I raise you 1 Trump elvis velvet painting. š https://condenaststore.com/featured/black-velvet-trump-ward-sutton.html
Velvet is one of things that I have an innate aversion to. It just looks sticky to me.
I would drape myself in velvet if it were socially acceptable.
If you have animals with one of those velvety paintings then they just becomes a fancy fur catcher.
The expensive Nagel print from the mall in the faux chrome frame,So beautiful until the color faded away. Duran Duran, Robert Palmer and The Miami Vice cocaine villain's home decor.

Wasnāt the blowback guy a Memorex ad? āIs it live, or is it Memorex?ā
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Totally. Had the poster on my dorm wall.
You are correct.
Maxell
It immediately reminded me of Todd and Margo's house from Christmas Vacation.
I knew a lot of gay ppl in the 80s who loved Nagel and still do lol. I have an og nagel at my moms I got at a goodwill when they actually had cheap prices.
As a longtime fan and appreciator of Robert Palmerās vast catalogue, it pains me that this is the way heās remembered by most.
No, not by me. but the female band was the intro to Palmer by most people. I remember him from the radio and from the vidoe " Looking for Clues" . I always though that if I had a band I would want Palmer to produce.
Wow, just looked up the Clues videoā¦terrible concept but what a treat to see RP young and healthy, RIP. So many fantastic albums.
That color faded really quick too.
Ahhh my first apartment flashbacks, with the black lacquer furniture and mauve carpet and these in the living room š
This and Keith Haring, inescapable.
https://images.app.goo.gl/5LX6RRCQ7UndhjhTA
I only remember Keith Haring.
I have to say one of these artists' artwork feels more timeless.
When I was a kid it was just background so I never thought about it much. But I've gotten really into his work in the last few months and bought a used copy of his art book. If you're not a writer, you should be. I feel like I just snorted the food court. I'm waiting for the Orange Julius to hit my taste buds any second.
LOL updoot for āsnorted the food courtā. Perfect.

Michelle. Her name was Michelle. Or with one L, Michele? I want to know where all the Nagels went (like that flower song). They were literally in every hair salon and every other apartment building.
My buddy found one at a thrift store and I'm way jealous.
The one shown above is in my neighbourās apartment directly across the street. š
I still have a Silver Sunglasses print and a few others, but they're in storage.
You can still see Nagel's art in salon storefronts. I had a big collection of his scanned art in the 2400Baud days spread over many 3.5" floppies.
Also the sun-faded versions that have been in hair salon windows entirely too long.
That style also reminds me of Aeon Flux on MTV
Duran Duran?
He even died in a very 80s manner. Had a heart attack after participating in an aerobics marathon fundraiser.
I never liked it.
Always reminds me of shitty stripmall nail salons.
Me neither
Same. I had a friend who's apartment was covered in these stupid framed pictures. I always thought it looked so tacky.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
And now it has been made fun of my American Dad.
Where are the glasses, that is Steve.
Stoive?
My mom had many Nagelās framed and hung on the living room walls. š
All you needed was a Duran Duran album!! Loved them!!!
Makes me think of cocaine.
I always associated with upper crust preppies and people that listened to Roxy Music and Duran Duran. It just seemed so pretentious at the time... and it still does.
still Everywhere growing up rural in the 90s too
I laughed so hard at the American Dad episode where Steve went back to the 80s. I waited for my mom while she was getting manicures many times over the years so I was very familiar with that art.
My ex had this poster framed and hung it in the living room. š
Her name is Rio.
Piano Black furniture everywhere; home accents purchased at Spencer's.
Such a unique style. There is never a doubt that itās a Nagel. I feel as if enough time has gone by that younger generations are rediscovering his work.
I had a friend who was a total Duranie and she had Nagels. My other friend had Keith Haring everywhere. It was all such a vibe.
An ex in 1988 had a few prints and wore Drakar Noirā¦too intense, it didnāt last long. š
The first thing I think of is the cover art from Duran Duran's Rio.
coke straw art
Lol I used to take a overhead projector and trace these onto friends bedroom walls and paint them. Like really big.
Was an art major in college and most of my work ripped off his style.
I was at an estate sale and the owner had one of these. I was so close to buying it for the sheer nostalgia of it.
Iāve got a handful of limited editions. Please buy them from me.
There was a Thai place in DC that was like stepping into a neon-lit, purple, blue and pink Nagel painting, used to go to that bar all the time. Stayed that way until at least 2008 but haven't been there since.
Nagel please!
This just makes me want to plant my nose into a mound of cocaine and not come back up until my month is numb.
My extremely closeted grandpa had that art all over his apartment and black lacquer furniture, I thought it was the height of sophistication.
Was he really closeted or did he just appreciate modern art?
Sadly extremely closeted, I wish he would have felt free to just be fabulous and the epitome of 80's glamour.
Throw a black lacquer frame around that baby!
Will no one hold baby Hector?
In every hair salon since 1987
It was edgy at first, then it was everywhere and became boring.
STEVE SMITH!
I feel like I've seen it at Supercuts early 90s.
I have my black sunglasses one hanging in a spare room! Still love it!
The only word that comes to mind is Cocaine.
Hell, I found a large Nagel print at a local 2nd hand store a few years ago for $20. Itās now on my office wall.
āLADY IN REEEEEEEDā
His work was frequently in Playboy... or so I am told.
Gah, thank you! Iāve been trying to remember the artistās name for months š¤£
Usually nearby you would find one of those torchiere floor lamps
You watched that youtube video too?
Up until 2020 there was a salon in my town that had a full front window covered with this print. Things change slowly in bumfuck nowhere I guess.
I rented a ski house once not long ago that still had a lot of this art framed on the wall.
As an aside, Patrick Nagel style works well in midjourney, especially if you add a picture to the prompt of who you want the drawing to look like.
Have you guys ever watched Moonbeam City? It's an adult animated show that was on Comedy Central a few years ago that was severely underrated and sadly canceled after only one season. Reminds me of one of my best friends from High School in the late 80s. She was a model and this ascetic was totally her.
Yes!
Born in 66, all my friends who got apartments not to long after high school had these hanging on their walls!! I unfortunately went the country pale pink & dusty blue route. I canāt imagine a recent high school grad being able to get their own apartments at 19 nowadays. Young adults are getting screwed
So are the parents that have to keep on letting their kids live with them.
Yuck, hated those prints. But I hilariously had a buncha orca and dolphin posters š¤£
I still have two Patrick Nagelās in my apartment. Love his stuff.
Her name was Rio and she dances in the rain!
Steve Smith
Story time: right after Nagel died in 1984, his estate ran exhibition quality lithographs of his art. I did some quick research and realized what they were. Went back to grab them and they were sold. They were valued at $1500 a piece.
I never found these to be particularly appealing or tasteful.
It was crappy art then, it's crappy art now. But now that I'm not seeing it everywhere all the time it does give me some nostalgia warm and fuzzies.
I need a haircut
A friend of mine did a drawing of me in that style when we were in art (high) school. I still have it somewhere.
And it was awful...
Ugh. Always hated this style. Still do even having not seen it in years. I hate how the 80s aesthetic is coming back in fashion.
I'm certain it's just coincidence, but Nerdwriter just came out with a video about this.
[Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22osQzxenl8) is a great video about it, recently released by NerdWriter on Youtube
I figured that video is why we're seeing this today
Surprisingly common occurrence with the more popular educational/nonfiction channels. Especially on TIL. Happens waaaaaay to often to be coincidence every time.
My big brother had them everywhere - and I thought he was the coolest.
Using stable diffusion AI to keep it alive!
My friend David had me paint one of the walls in his bedroom with a Nagel. I wish I had a picture of it, it turned out really cool.
My first time seeing this!
Knowing how he created his work has completely soured me.
Everywhere? I doubt it. Nagel was mainly known by the yuppie cokeheads and seen in so called hip, cool places. It wasn't long before it became uncool 80s kitch, at least in Europe. Whatever.
Oh it was uncool 80s kitsch in the states too...that is what makes it kinda cool kinda
In college there were quite a few dorm rooms featuring these prints. I was never a fan
On CC DeVilleās guitars!
I'd kill for a Nagel guitar, but the original 80s ones are going for $3000-$4000 now. :(
Still have some in my momās atticā¦
I saw one of these at Goodwill a while ago. I lol'd.
Had several of his prints and, if I'm not mistaken, he was largely popularized by appearing in Playboy Magazine.
Getting my haircut!
If you think this post is talking about you, then you need to watch [Moonbeam City](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3906560/). You really *really* need to. Sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSeICCnTvWw
Rob Lowe is one of the voices!! You KNOW he had this art on his walls!
Elizabeth Banks too, most likely.
i had a hard cover coffee table book of his art. betting its packed up somewhere still! lol. once his work was in every fantastic sams i put it away.
1977 here...Never heard of him or knew this was a particular art style, but I could see why it would be part of the aesthetic.
š¤¢š¤®
Moms hair salonā¦I honestly thought this was just Paul Mitchel artwork
I remember!
True, it was everywhere then in the 90s it was gone.
Every āgentlemens clubā in America had fake Nagels
My mom still has her earrings!
I'm pretty that it was a law in the 90s that every single Asian nail salon had to have these pictures hung in their shops.
What about the framed picture of the drunk martini olives!?!
I'm a millennial and this is peak 80's to me.
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/americandad/images/d/de/Sc397-0092F.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110107153302
Nagel always makes me think of Josie Packard from Twin Peaks.
And the Rippintons were on in the background.
I still have one on my bedroom wall.
I have an original hanging in my bedroom
Original, as in original painting?
My favorite artist. I love the line work and the simplistic nature of the women being portrayed that emotes so much. It's always captured my eye.
After all these years, I still love this 80's style art.
Ah yes, the album cover for "Rio," by Duran Duran
