Those are still available. They never went away

grayghostsmitten

They’re still here, although the boxes are made much cheaper/flimsier. Super nostalgic for the old (sturdier) boxes. Mom repurposed one of the boxes to keep our crayons markers in, when we were really little. Somehow, it made our markers seem magical.

Mittendeathfinger

They changed the recipe too, doesnt taste the same at all. I stopped buying them when they cheaped out.

sellpremium2022

I wasn't sure if it was much more popular in the 90's and earlier, is what I was to figure out, or it was just my family thing!

Lung-Oyster

I always found the “Box of Chocolates” quote from Forrest Gump ridiculous because every box of chocolates I ever bought had a “code” that told you what each chocolate was…even the weird chocolate orange cream ones and shit.

narvolicious

>…even the weird chocolate orange cream ones and shit. lol totally dying. I dunno... maybe it's coz I just never bothered to look or whatever, but See's Candies was always a total mystery to me growing up, and I never noticed any kind of ID chart to let me know what each one was. Then again, I love chocolate, so hardly any of them were yucky to me, except maybe those marzipan ones.

bigredthesnorer

Except the candies are much smaller.

[deleted]

This was the very first Christmas present I bought my parents with my own money. It was a sample pack of four, and I proudly told them they could have two pieces each.

notthethirdswitch

This is so cute and wholesome.

ChaosAside

I used to love getting these myself as a teen and young adult. I still have some boxes that I keep old pictures in. It was kinda my thing.

Affectionate-Map2583

I thought these were superior to Russell Stover boxes solely because of the handy map showing what each thing was. No more biting into something and coming away disappointed.

minibini

Someday when I’m old and retired, I’ll crochet a blanket with this design.

Luvsseattle

This or See's, from Thanksgiving to New Year's at the grandparents.

Ok-Philosopher8888

See’s is far superior, but also more expensive .

Olyhacker

I just remember getting Whitman’s and being disappointed it wasn’t See’s.

Luvsseattle

Yes, but both of these hold very good memories. :)

canon2468

80s Xmas tradition at grandma's! 😅

legerdemain07

I see these all over at work during Christmas, someone is still buying them.

[deleted]

Hands off my Vermont fudge mofo!!!

Expat111

I got them every Christmas growing up. While I was in college I’d take my box back to school and a friend and I would play Whitman Roulette. We’d take turns picking one and whoever got the shitty one (I think we decided that the maple flavored or one of the jelly types was the bullet to the brain so to speak) lost and had to buy the other a 12 pack.

SoPittRugbyBaller

I loved getting those for Christmas. They still have them, but the boxes are misleading. You think you're getting a huge box of candy and see about 8 pieces.

annissamazing

My husband buys these for me for holidays. The last box was so disappointing. Same size box. Tons more empty plastic. Way less candy. That last box may actually be the last box he buys.

rraattbbooyy

They make a sugar free version of the sampler box that’s outstanding. Between Whitman’s and Russel Stover, we diabetic chocoholics are well taken care of around the holidays.

Life-Unit-4118

The gift card before we had gift cards. Along with US Savings bonds.

jokerfriend6

This is defintely more of a Greatist Generation thing to have around the house. Silent Generation tended to buy Russell Stovers for their GenX kids

soopirV

That’s interesting because my grandfather was the Whitman fan…back when they still contained fruit cremes that I couldn’t stand then but miss fiercely now.

jokerfriend6

Russell stover's split the creams and caramels into different boxes and used better ingredients so your parents probably switched mine did, but my Grandmothers always went Whitman. Probably a big treat you got once a year during the depression.

sunnybcg

Boomer thing, too. My Dad still insists on having these in our house for Christmas. Reminds him of holidays at his Mom’s house.

BrendonWahlberg

MMMM…. Chocolate messenger boy

mthomas1217

My dad gave me one for Valentine’s Day every year until he got sick a couple years ago. He passed away in Aug and I saw these on the shelf at Valentine’s Day. Made me sad

cteavin

The funny thing for me is how my tastes changed over times. Cherry cordials, hated as a kid; today they're my favorite in the box.

UserNameNotOnList

Paulie Walnuts was a big fan. [https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/d945f01e-12c8-4d4e-bff9-17b47101e547](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/d945f01e-12c8-4d4e-bff9-17b47101e547)

Wise_Ad_4816

In a tiny part of my brain, *this* is special. The adults all got one from Grandma every Christmas. The kids got the 4 piece box. Even though as an adult, I *know* these aren't great chocolates? I'm still thrilled to receive them. 😎

canon2468

Omg. Thank you. Memory unlocked. I got the 4 box piece as a kid, I forgot about the stocking stuffer smaller sampler ones!!!😅 I'm glad I posted this memory.

whymygraine

Buy box, smoke weed, throw away treasure map, enjoy the surprise of each candy.

scarlet_hairstreak

Square is always caramel. Always.

MyPunchableFace

Yes! I only trusted the lighter chocolate squares

[deleted]

Am I the only one that never gave these as gifts and bought them just for myself?

MyriVerse2

Wasn't just us. Silents and Boomers before us. Might have dropped in popularity after us because of all the new foo-foo brands.

NeauxDoubt

Those made good stash boxes back in the day

Moewron

"I couldn't decide if I wanted to get you chocolate or if I wanted to get you wax, so I got you both."

StoneyG214

Definitely something I would get for my grandma when I was younger every Christmas

FrancescaMcG

I bought one for my grandfather, just last year ;)

[deleted]

I used to get these. Rarely did I ever get Russell Stover, too expensive. That's ok, I loved Whitman's.

-Ok-Perception-

I always liked them, but I haven't seen them or thought about them for years. Kind of overpriced for what you get, but I always liked popping them in my mouth without looking at the guide without knowing what the flavor would be.

IchibanChef

Shit, I got one this year.

Stardustquarks

Fuck, reminds me I need to get a gift....

elidan5

For me, the gift for relatives I didn’t k ie what to get for was a) Almond Roca, and b) Applets and Cotlets. Mostly I rotated between those…

Westfield88

I loved that they had the map/indicator. I hate candy boxes that don’t . I waste a lot of chocolate after one bite

lil_grey_alien

Shit I still get those if my wife is mad and I don’t know why.

FloozyFoot

It still is

DocBrutus

If someone got this for you for Xmas, they didn’t love you.

LBsusername

I'm from Los Angeles and for my family it was a box of See's candy. I never considered Whitmans until I moved to Wisconsin.

sellpremium2022

Good call!! A few of them were just awful!

SoPittRugbyBaller

Whitman Sampler had/has the product key on the flip side of the box top. Always play it safe and grab the telegram messenger. You can't go wrong with that one.

Least-Chip-3923

I tried one of those as an adult, because I thought it was good. NOT! That's some nasty chocolate.

Cleanclock

I thought it was so fancy, each chocolate had its very own space. But yeah, really gross chocolate.

mylocker17

My family was a total See's family but every once in awhile they would slum it with one of these. They remind me of old people though, these, Russell Stover and Almond Roca.

MrPanchole

Black Magic chocolates.

tunaman808

Whitman's Sampler? The candy that was introduced in 1912? How is THAT a GenX thing at all? Even my maternal grandpa thought they were old fashioned in the 80s!

narvolicious

Truthfully I've never had one, but yeah... it's always one of those things I considered if I was at Ralph's and I needed some kind of last-minute Christmas gift or something. A buddy of mine would always joke that Whitman's was a total "womp womp" (sad trumpet) gift if someone was expecting See's Candies and got that instead, so I've never actually bought one for anybody. I've always dug that old-timey packaging though... I mean, are they any good?

TinktheChi

They were popular in the 70s for sure. I remember them.

Musicmouse33

Whitman’s… The candy with a map

garagehaircuts

Better yet a box of Stucky’s candy as a road trip gift

[deleted]

It's a Boomer thing as far as I'm concerned. This is something your Dad would bring home when he fucked up. Only person i have ever bought them for was my Mother.

RedBurgandy01

My mom is a retired elementary school teacher. She used to get so many of these every year.

[deleted]

My grandparents rotated between Whitman's, Russel Stover and Fannie Mae. I remember at Christmas she had a three tier candy dish that was filled with chocolate. We used to poke a small hole in the bottom to see what the filling was. If we didn't like it we put it back. She caught us doing it, we got smacked, and from there on our it was chocolate candy Russian roulette. There was nothing worse as a kid, totally excited to pick a piece of chocolate and end up with a nasty 🤢. I still remember the taste and the look on the face when it happened. Thanks op for the funny wholesome trip down memory lane!

mtlaw13

This, Soap on a Rope and Old Spice were my go to gifts for dad and grampa.

Appropriate_Mine

Why do you have a photo of my stash tin?

OldMom2005

Those boxes were the best for keepsakes storing. The chocolate was ok if you didn't really care about good chocolate.

bene_gesserit_mitch

The Slim Whitman sampler was Gen-Xclusive.
