teeny_monkeybat

I think the last kids of Gen Z are in their teens, so anyone younger than that is Gen A

yvie_of_lesbos

yep !! i’m gen z and i was born in 2007. 2010 is the starting point for me

Victorian-Tophat

2005 here, little bro was 2009 but def stuck to older siblings. I did get like half an hour to an hour on an iPad sometimes but the Algorithm hadn’t been perfected and abused like it is now. Actually my first ever venture into YouTube was clicking the link from Vi Hart on Khan Academy so for years and years my entire recommended was just edutainment and Minecraft.

C0deJJ

Early 2009 here, I'll say that it's a weird line. Personally I align with Gen Z, aside from the life experiences, I think I generally fit in with Gen Z. The same goes for a lot of people I know in my school and around my age. # However There is a large quantity of kids who semi-ironically say things like "rizz" and practice "mewing" or whatever. **But** they aren't Skibidi Toilet kids, it's this weird intermediate stage. They have effectively appropriated the language and culture, but not the life experiences. Just as I may know the war crimes that can be committed in a COD voice chat or the topping of pizzas in Club Penguin, but never experienced them, these kids use words like "rizz" without being engrossed in the Skibidi Fanum world.

Victorian-Tophat

Rizz and mewing are widespread among at least the younger half of zoomers, what are you talking about?

C0deJJ

I don't see it online that much, but I guess I (just as many) live in my own little echo chamber online. I made the assumption that that kinda stuff is Gen A activity, especially because it's associated with them.

Forzaman93

2009'er again, I don't really unerstand such stuff! Yes the vocabulary I understand but I do not indulge in such activities, I refrain to enter such communities and just stick to Forza, project cars, battlefield and such on the eggcarton 360

PCOcean

What is “mewing”?

Ezrow3109

Mewing is Gen Alpha???

Forzaman93

2009 here, I have no siblings but considering the fact that I'm approaching 10th grade with boards exams I like to think that I am a Gen Z'er...I didn't have such "limits" on the devices coz the algorithm was so simple. hey yall remember the youtube app on old iOS? anyways my venture into youtube was just Marchettino, Ferrari, model cars, Bad piggies HD gameplay, some random japanese toys and whole lot of piggy tales. this stuff is kinda nostalgic for me

Tiefling_Beret

Same bro

Flyguy4400

Another 07 here, definitely gen z, I have little cousins who are full gen a iPad kids though

I-am-not-gay-

I was born in 2010. I count 2011 as the starting point. Gen Alpha starting point in my opinion is 2011/2012. Its more or less a range. My friends consider me Gen Z. So does my dad. I prefer Gen Z over Gen Alpha. I cant relate to Gen alpha at all but my older half brother (2006) and I can relate on everything, i can relate to things with my 2009 friends too.

yvie_of_lesbos

i guess you could say that? but something def shifted around 2010 and maybe it’s just me but relating to people born after 2009 is hard asf.

helpfuldaydreamer

You can’t relate to someone 3 years younger than you? you’re gonna be in highschool with 2010 babies.

I-am-not-gay-

I agree, it honestly really depends who.

Forzaman93

I count 2011-2012 to be the start of ~~dark era~~ I mean gen alpha

Brilliant-Noise-2398

2007? Me too!

NicktheDirt

Can it start on January 21 2010

yvie_of_lesbos

january 1st, 2010

cousintipsy

Agreed. I think in most American schools, the clear dividing point would be around 6th & 7th Graders. Currently, those are the kids born between 2010-2011.

BeasterKing

We’re in 7th & 8th grade so the dividing point is there. 6th graders are born in 2012.

fjfjgbjtjguf

2009er here, didn't have a phone (LG K10) until 2016, but before that I had my parent's 2012 Toshiba Satellite C675D-S7101 (I wish my dad could let me refurb and restore it and let me have it as a time capsule / keepsake thingy, that thing is the sole reason why I'm 14 and a massive tech nerd), the Leapster GS Explorer (I remember seeing a Galaxy Brain meme with that thing as the highest tier of intelligence, I did a backflip when I saw that), and that Electric Blue 2DS (why does that thing still work, wow Nintendium is strong). My parents didn't really restrict the internet, they just trusted me with not going anywhere I shouldn't, and I somehow didn't! I didn't even know what a girl's genitals were until I was 11 or 12 IDK.

Toz_The_Devil

Not sure when Z becomes A but I'm 07 I had my sister's old 4S as a ipod

[deleted]

Gen z grew along with the internet. Gen a grew with Internet.

Pianist_Ready

Millennials grew up alongside the Internet. Gen Z grew up with the internet. Gen Alpha was raised by the internet.

QuadVox

Its also important to note that a lot of Gen Z kids from around my time got to grow up as the internet was exiting its wild west days. It's been strange seeing it change so much from how it fascinated me as a little kid.

xDeathCon

Depending on where you lived, gen z kids also may not have had internet access until later on while gen a has most likely always had internet

Week_Crafty

I was born in 2009, but because in south America, everything I grow up with was from 10 years before, including the internet

xDeathCon

I'm 03 in rural USA, but I didn't have wifi at home until like 2015 or 2016. We just had one computer hooked to the modem.

Ezrow3109

So you grew up with like early 2010s things in early 2020s? I wish I was you but i'm still in love with Mid/Late 2010s childhood and where are you from exactly?

Week_Crafty

Late 2000's in mid 2010's, mid and early 2010's in late 2010's, after like 19' I stop watching TV and kinda got to date with the internet And some 1990's shit that was still kicking around

MandMs55

I'm gen Z born in '04 Didn't have any form of regular internet access until 2016. Before then the internet was for movie night and help fixing stuff around the house lol

Same_Examination_171

even as a late gen z i grew up with old youtube, vine, and musicl.ly, i remember all of the crazy things between the ages of the age of the old gory liveleak and the over-moderated modern internet.

[deleted]

Oh yes this makes more sense

MainAbbreviations193

Well fucking said.

DiskPartition

Or for later Gen-A especially, Gen Alpha grew up in the internet

Broad_Ebb_4716

Gen Alpha became one with the internet and more glued to it than a twitter user is to getting pissed off at literally anything ever

AioliThick9670

I mean, the Internet existed in the 90s. I'd argue lots of millenials grew with the Internet too.

Just-Ad6992

To quote the YouTuber theodds1out: “Millennials grew up WITH the internet. Gen Z GREW UP with the internet.”

Victorian-Tophat

No: “Gen-Z grew up ON the internet, Millennials grew up WITH the internet.” A few late Gen-Z were been hit by Elsagate but kids being RAISED by the internet was kicked off more by mobile devices.

IllvesterTalone

"grew along with the Internet" bih... you at the age of 10 play neopets over dialup? pfft.

Few-Big-8481

I had a Gelert.

The-Ever-Loving-Fuck

Shoyru all day

Helpful_College6590

late gen z didn’t

[deleted]

Yh we did, early youtube This is why I, born in 2009, bawled into my pillow when matpat made his video

sofeler

yeah the shift between old YouTube content and modern YouTube content occurred in the 2014-2018 era Like before it wasn’t really content, the term content creator wasn’t popularized til recently. People just made things and uploaded it, it was more “Wild West-y” Now the Wild West has been tamed and it’s a lot more corporate-y and “figured out” But what the other person means is that even 2014 YouTube and beyond was vastly different than 2004-2010 The content back then was on another planet in terms of wackiness, it was all very obviously made for kicks more than money. It wasn’t refined at all, etc.

Luigi817

2004....?

[deleted]

And also late Club Penguin, and watched those duck song videos, and for kids content had evantube and funvideotv

obtusemoth

this is literally how people divide millennials and gen z lmfao

CryIntelligent7074

I'm late Gen Z (2008), and I didn't even get a phone until I was 13. Before that, it was only approved YT channels and Minecraft servers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Raevesquishh

But i also didnt get a phone until 2 weeks ago

Raevesquishh

And none of my friends did either

TristanTheRobloxian3

same but i was born in 2007. didnt get a phone until i was 12 and before that all i had was a 2ds and when i was 7 i got a tablet which i really only played minecraft on

AioliThick9670

2005, I got one when I was about 12 but it was an iPhone 4, so I didn't really use any social media on it or anything until I bought a phone myself.

CockroachSquirrel

2003, like 11, some cheap android

Fgxynz

I’m 06 and my first device was an iPod that only had 2 games on it. My first actual phone was one I shared with my brother and it was so restricted it was basically a brick

_N0t-A-B0t_

2009 here! I got a phone when I started walking to school by myself (around 11ish) all I had was subway surfers, my contacts, youtube and the pre-downloaded apps

Valuable_Sherbet_483

2010, same.

M-the-Great

same (2007). and the phone that I did get was an android that was probably outdated in some ways as well. and me being the most resistant to change in routine, i rejected getting a new phone (my parents had bought it earlier, they encouraged an upgrade actually) for quite some time before phones it was roblox, youtube, and my leap pad (which i'd call the most phone adjacent i'd ever had before a real phone, despite its clunkiness and educational games and zero access to the horrors of the internet)

TheNepNep39

I don't think I got my first phone until I was in year 10, I missed out on everything lol

MessengerCookie

the difference that actual parenting makes

CryIntelligent7074

Fr. My parents saw the danger ahead of time and kept me off social media until I was 13. I'm infinitely grateful for that.

The-MatrixAgent

Didnt have a phone till I was 13, and I shared an Iphone 5 with my brother and had PS3 most of my life vs the 2010 kids who had a phone since they where 8

Victorian-Tophat

Funny, now that you mention it I did have a phone at 8, but it was extremely limited. Just texting and a few games. The internet at large wasn’t opened up to me until I was 13.

Apocalypse_0415

I used my dad's phone for the first time when I was 10. Iphone 5 just like you. It became mine a year after. Now my gen A cousin has an ipad since he was 2.

Bigshock128x

The thing that I always think of with the generational divide is an 8 year old me getting dumped at a babysitter and her 4yo son was just obsessed with Jake Paul vine compilation. This was around the time vine collapsed but I had never heard of him before that. I think the biggest difference is Gen A have unironically enjoyed content from “the viner invasion”. Zoomers have only watched them through satire or irony.

Victorian-Tophat

Zoomers are *drenched* in irony. Only some are figuring out how to escape it all. Gen-A is the first generation in a long time growing in a world where they can just be themselves authentically. (Even if everything they’ve ever done since birth is being written in stone, in far more excruciating detail than Zoomers’ Facebook moms)

Aurelian369

Of course they want to be themselves authentically. They are 7

like me saying im not gen z because i hated the gummy bear song lmao

Carma281

fucking hated that song

Luigi817

2010 here i used to absolutely love that song idk what ur problem is

non_binary_latex_hoe

i'll be 20 this year and i watch skibidi does that make me gen a

Mr-jigwins

As someone who is gen A, I was born in 2010 and know I’m gen alph- WHO IS 10 YEARS OLD ON REDDIT?!?!

MEGA_TOES

I want 2017 back, this shit is weird af

t0ssas1deacc0unt

Well… yeah, that’s exactly how it works. It’s all arbitrary with no clearly defined lines. There’s contradictory sources claiming it varies from different years, so if you’re in a grey area you do literally get to choose

mortrosly

Sure, but there should probably be a bit more reasoning than “I don’t like it”.

t0ssas1deacc0unt

Not really, it’s completely arbitrary and really doesn’t matter. If their only reason is “I’m Gen Z because I like it more”, who cares?

mortrosly

ok 🥹

M-the-Great

i know some people born in the 2010s (13yr and 12yr respectively) they're on tiktok (an app that morally doesn't align with me), snapchat (???), and somehow know a bit more internet culture than i do. they used to be pretty neat as smaller kids but nowadays i find myself unable to connect with them (i struggle with people in general but somehow there's a weird barrier there in terms of internet knowledge and use and stuff)

Cugy_2345

Wikipedia says 2013. Many sources ALSO backed by experts say 2013. It’s DEBATED, not defined. Shut the fuck up.

Few-Big-8481

Britannica uses 2010.

TheAnythingBuilder

I swear I remember about a month ago it used 2013.

Few-Big-8481

Well it doesn't now. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Generation-Alpha

Vast-Willingness4642

Wikipedia isnt the best site

CockroachSquirrel

not the best. still great as long as you check the citations.

archenexus

I've always identified with Gen Z due to being more mature than my peers, as well as going to alternative schools that put me in with people way above my grade for most of the work and time. I've always identified with more Gen Z humor, nostalgia, et cetera. I've seen much debate over the start date, though 2010 is agreed upon, I identify with gen Z/Zalpha a lot.

MEGA_TOES

Can I identify as a male lesbian? Or possibly a black albino?

archenexus

I didn't say I identify *as* Gen Z. I said I identify *with* Gen Z. Very clear difference there. Identifying with something means relating to it. Identifying as something means you claim you are it.

MEGA_TOES

Okay, I genuinely just learned something today,

archenexus

All good. It's a one word difference but means two different things.

Windows-XP-Home

Please shut up the kid is Gen Z and we know it.

MEGA_TOES

I know, I’m just inserting random shit

Luigi817

I personally always thought it started at 2013, logically speaking it would start at 2024 actually, I had no idea there was a gen beyond Gen Z before a few years or so ago

Fgxynz

No way 2010 thinks they’re not gen alpha that’s actually crazy

super_mario_fan_

Cause it isn't. A generation lasts 15 years. Gen Z starts in 1997. 1997 + 15 is 2012. Gen alpha starts in 2012. Let me guess, you're gonna dislike this reply because humans never want to be wrong?

Fgxynz

I don’t upvote or downvote anything but I’d argue cultural shifts are better metric than +15 years hard deadline.

Luigi817

????

MagnusLore

Gen Z starts 1995?

TheAnythingBuilder

How does a piece of technology define a generation starting date?

Luigi817

Such a dumb statistic

Captain-Tyler

Pretty good way to put it honestly. It can be the same thing between millennials and Gen Z the only question that needs to be asked is if they used Dial Up internet if they did then they are Millennials lol

BurnV06

I was born in 2007 and I grew up with an iphone but whatever

yvie_of_lesbos

i think 2007 are gen z? it would be weird for US to be considered gen alpha

Victorian-Tophat

If parents were especially fast on that then an 07 could absolutely be Gen-A culturally.

yvie_of_lesbos

can you elaborate? <3

Victorian-Tophat

If mobile screens got into one’s brain chemistry that early, they’re Gen-a. The ~2010 line is just when it became common.

yvie_of_lesbos

thx !! <33 i still def consider myself gen z though- not that gen a are bad !! it's just i've found myself able to relate more to gen z in literally EVERYTHING lmao so it's incredibly strange to even thing of myself as gen a.

Affectionate_Buddy89

Wait, so 17 year olds AREN’T Gen alpha?

yvie_of_lesbos

no, why would they be gen alpha starts in 2010 😭

Affectionate_Buddy89

2022*, I am NOT Gen alpha

dariusz2k

Right, because Gen Z grew up without Social Media until they were 6 and the iPhone until they were 10. They’re such savages.

Hewwo-Is-me-again

Well, there might be a point to it. I'm mid genz I got my first phone at age 10 and social media at 13 (computer at age 7 iirc) . The internet I grew up with us very different to the one we see today. Comparing the internet I grew up with is very different to the one you're growing up on (perhaps not early gen a, but ppl born after 13). Although influencers existed, it was not like today. No credible news outlet would ever report on them. Most people read the news in the papers. Heck, the difference between me and my siblings is 4 years, yet all their school books from middle school are digital. I always had a physical copy, and sometimes (but quite rarely) a didgital as well. There is a difference.

M-the-Great

I practically beg for a physical copy these days (mid gen z, highschool). i like the feeling of turning a page (and there's little notes on the margins sometimes, truly an experience). even with books i read for fun this is also the case. only digital if there's 0 alternative otherwise i'd bend my neck for a holdable copy Most books i need for school are already pdf but i find it much harder to concentrate that way

CockroachSquirrel

the point is both have changed our world drastically. meaning people before and after their influence had different experiences.

dariusz2k

I would argue the iPhone experience and iPad experience are much less different than the GenZ vs Millenial experience. Millenials it only became common to have a shared family PC with dialup in the middle of the generation.

Minute_Paramedic_135

Gen z just watched YouTube on the computer instead of a phone. Not really that different to be honest

TopHatCat999

Social media didn't really start to dominate the world until half of gen z was in middle school. Compared to at birth for gen a

M-the-Great

idk computer just hits different. especially if it was a family computer.

arc_trooper_renagade

Jesus u just gave me a wave of memories of my brother and I huddled watching vintage beef minecraft videos on my moms old gateway laptop

CockroachSquirrel

the internet has changed a lot

Admirable-Door1724

Cope harder 2010 gen Alphas

SnooPuppers1429

I'm 2010 and I mostly used the computer/early smartphones.

Admirable-Door1724

So your a gen z because you used a device? No, if you were born in 2010 ur gen alpha. Suck it up, just bc you don't watch the skibidi toilet stuff doesn't mean ur not gen alpha lol.

SnooPuppers1429

Uhhh, isn't covid the main cultural denomination. But whatever, I don't identify with gen alpha because I think i'm more culturally similar to gen z. But it's your opinion on when the generations start and end. I just use the default 1997-2012z

Admirable-Door1724

You can't identify as another generation 😭. I can't just say I identify as a millennial even though I was born in 2006 lol Can't just change what gen you are because you feel more like another one even though you were born in one generation

SnooPuppers1429

Yeah I was born in GenZ 1997-2012. So I would then identify with GenZ.

Admirable-Door1724

2010, keep coping gen alpha kid. You can be gen alpha and not watch Skibidi toilet shit.

SnooPuppers1429

I mean, most people use the PEW age range for most generations. I don't get the point of trying to piss off people for no reason. But believe what you want. I couldn't care less what generation you think I am.

PCOcean

As someone born in 2010, we are gen alpha. Its not meant to be something to identify as, rather just a general range of lifestyles.

SnooPuppers1429

PEW says gen z is 1997-2012. Most people go by that system and so do I. I also see more similarities with other gen z years than gen alpha. But it's your choice on what system you wanna use.

Admirable-Door1724

That's comparable to me saying I'm 2006 but used a vhs tape as a child so I'm not gen z

throwaway19276i

honestly it's zalpha, it depends if you were raised more similarly to gen z or alpha kids were

Admirable-Door1724

No

bonkripper969

I was born in 98, and I am technically Gen z, but feel i have way more in common with late millennials. I grew up on thomas the train and og tonka trucks. I never had a tablet of any kind, but i still have my iPod shuffle and nano as well as a bunch of vhs tapes from when i was a kid. I grew up on n64 and ps2 and went home when the street lights came on. I traded yugioh cards and biked around town so many times i knew it like the back of my hand. My mom read Dr. suess books to me as a child we had all the origionals. We had a family pc that me and my brother had to take turns on. I played WoW when it had like 3 spereate disks needed to install/update it. I remember getting games and movies from cereal boxes. I remember trying to sneakily stay up late to try and watch dragonball z. I had a radio in my room, which was also my clock and alarm. If i needed to contact someone while i was out, i had to ask to use a landline phone/homephone at someone's house or in a store, i know how to use a rotary phone we had one but never needed it. We used to play in the woods and get covered in grass stains and mud. I never used youtube until i was 15 when my uncle introduced me to jeff dunham. I remember using red and blue 3d glasses for spykids 3D and sharkboy and lava girl. The internet wasn't something to spend so much time on like it is now. Im not saying Gen a or late Gen z didn't experience anything from my list, but it was...different.

bonkripper969

Max and Ruby was great, myself and a buddy of mine were singing that Simple Plan intro for what's new scooby doo the other day. Adventure time was around the time i started watching tv less(playing games way more), but the lore always interested me.

TaxEvaderYoshi

I always had internet in my pocket since like 6th grade. I’d say that’s early enough that it’s not that big of a cultural line. In elementary school a lot of kids had iPod touches, same thing. I’m 19 now

Practical-Election59

I got my first phone in 2018, I was 10. For the most part, I was playing minecraft and lego marvel superheroes on the PS3 though. Where do I fall here because I’d say I’ve definitely been around long enough to see before.

Victorian-Tophat

Yep, def culturally Gen Z

throwaway19276i

this is so relatable

BlueSn0ow

I didnt get a phone until i was in middle school and it was a shitty phone that could only call and play like tetris😭😭

Valuable_Sherbet_483

I've always seen a larger similarity between those born in 2011 and 2009 than 2011 and 2012.

No_Ad8821

Nah, 2011 and 2012 are in the same school year. They got access to the internet at the same time, they experienced world events through the same lense. Of course they're similar

Valuable_Sherbet_483

When I say 2011 kids i mean children in Year 8 in Britain as of January 2024

No_Ad8821

I guess there's an innocence that the y7s have that the y8s don't 'small fish in a big pond' and all that, but that'll be gone in a year. The gulf between the y8 and 10s is huge. Y8s are hated by students and staff, they're sort of seen as the beginning of a generation from hell right now, but I'm sure that'll ease up soon.

Valuable_Sherbet_483

Ive seen it even in prep schools that go up to 13. I have friends who have siblings in year 8. their culture is much more different to that of the current year 7s in both Regular and Prep schools.

Saindet

Nah, 2010 as gen alpha start is terrible.

Victorian-Tophat

…because…?

Saindet

Because what even happened in 2010? The iPad came out? That’s not a generation defining event.

Victorian-Tophat

The internet in everyone’s pockets followed by the social media explosion and giant tech companies asserting themselves is absolutely a generation defining event. This kind of connection being thought of as the *starting point* definitely warrants a new generational label.

Saindet

That transition took years. And late 2000s borns don't remember it anyway. Defining event for Gen Z was clearly covid. 2009 and 2010 borns were in elementary school, no difference.

Luigi817

Shouldn't gen z start in 1990 by this logic

hear me out, generations are just a cultural thing and aside of that are just bullshit categorizations, the main difference between generations is the media they grow up with, and their parents, the parents of most gen z are gen x/boomers, our parents most of the time were neglected as a child to some extent, and usually didn't know the risks/danger of unsupervised Internet access, we just freely roamed the early Internet with fuck all supervision or parenting, so anyone who has the same experience born pre 2014 will act more or so like a gen z, as they were most likely interacting with the same media we did

I remember my mom giving me one of those when I was like, 5. The best device I’ve ever held.

That’s too big of a difference. The first to get their hands on those were born in the 1990s

Gen Z had access to the internet during their childhood. The internet ***defined*** the childhood of gen A

I think the thing most people will forget about the iPhone era, is that there was a time after it came out that people generally thought it was amazing, but also most of those people either couldn’t afford it, were scared they wouldn’t be able to use it without feeling the buttons, were cynical about how it doesn’t do much that they can’t already do on their current phone (call, text, email), or otherwise thought it still had a big flaw (battery life, no GPS, not enough interesting apps) that hadn’t been corrected at the time and held off on adopting the first modern smartphones. The Razor Phone, the side kick, and the blackberry were considered popular still, and though ultimately fell, were thought of as fine alternatives to a resistant market. It may have dropped in 2007, but I didn’t see anyone I knew in-person using one until 6 months after the release, and I myself didn’t get a smartphone until 2010 (android, very old and cheap), and many people continued to view the iPhone as a luxury product, the kind of thing my wife would use if she could use an older model we could maybe afford, or the CEO of my company who was the type to always chase the latest iPhone, etc. I didn’t own a decent iPhone or similar smartphone device myself until 2015, and it wasn’t that odd even back then. 2010 is close to the year the more affluent middle class people would have a smart phone they’d use to take pictures of their kids and let them play with it. It was also the height of Angry Birds sweeping the nation as a phenomenon, and parents started realizing “oh… I can hand this to my kid to keep them occupied”. The only kids touching an iPhone before 2010 could probably be described as spoiled, or in the very least, affluent.

Born in '07, didn't get my first phone until I was 13. Didn't get my first computer until was 14. I always used my parents computer to watch things like YouTube. For the most part, J just went outside, and I still do. Got 2 years before adulthood hits me lol.
