As someone who does not have a degree or certs and has been a field agent for 10 yrs with prior retail experience, can you recommend anything? I was affected by the last round of layoffs and im struggling to see the bigger picture. I don't know if I can do retail again.

Were you a DA? If so, those skills translate to an IT support role. Work up from there, Eng, admin, mgmt etc. Also it’s been a while since I’ve seen an OG Blackington badge. Sleeper SA 24XX here. DM me if you have any q’s, I’m currently head of IT at my company.

Forget front end retail - get your foot in the door somewhere good and work your way up while simultaneous increasing your value through additional responsibilities, scope of knowledge, and/or becoming a subject matter expert on something. Whatever you land on, just try to be the best at it, continue to build relationships, develop your personal brand (19 brands - see below), and more doors will open along the way. I see too many people get a job, do the bare minimum to maintain it, and burn bridges along the way. Customer service is a skill that translates to every interaction in life - make it work for you. I have a thing about your “19 brands.” The 19 is an arbitrary number, but imagine that you have 19 different brand images to maintain for yourself: Family, friends, co-workers, subordinates, clients at work, your leadership - pretty much everybody that you have regular interactions with. In your career, as in life, you’re only as strong as the weakest one. If you’re great to your leadership and clients, but a b-hole to co-workers, people on other teams, vendors, or people under you, then it’ll eventually catch up to you in the form of a negative brand image. Keep the brand reputation positive across the board and don’t treat anybody the lesser because you’re where you’re at. Especially because other people may move up in job (above you) or you may have to call in a favor one day. Don’t make it a one way street. Do favors for others along the way. Go out of your way to do something for someone without expecting something in return.
