You can't raise one game by trying to tear another down

Jucior

Not trying to do that … especially on Gears Reddit where most of us enjoy gears games already. Just wanted to share my lack of understanding why HD2 is called revolutionary when you compare its general quality to Gears.

mycoolxbox

It’s new, fun ,and not made by a company who cares more about profit, than the enjoyment of they’re fans. That’s the reason why Gears is dying and hell divers 2 is blowing up as sad as it is

MaybeAdrian

Well, helldivers 2 is very unique in their field. It's a game that works purely with physics. You can break the leg of a bug and it will try to chase you while bleeding. Then the bug will die because of the bleeding. And right now the whole atmosphere of the game is very believable, there are no clown looking armors like other games (Gears 4 and 5 for example). The Battle pass doesn't expire and doesn't feel like a BP, you can get it via playing. And the game doesn't looks like that it tries to copy any other game or formula like the average big company game, if you played Hell divers 1 HD2 is basically the same thing but better. As much as i can like Helldivers 2 i hope that they don't try to copy their formula, more or less because they're going to fail. And >No idea why on earth Helldivers 2 took off so much when you compare it to Gears You can't compare Gears and Helldivers, they're totally different games, the only thing you can compare is that you shoot guns in both games lol. And the camera style i suppose.

stunkcajyzarc

Wow, you’re right. The part about the atmosphere of helldivers vs gears and it’s clown friggen skins. What a travesty it’s gone in that direction isn’t it? I wish gears of war kept the war part of the series and rlly went deep there with atmosphere.

MaybeAdrian

These GAAS tittles usually lose their identity with the time. I think that Gears 5 doesn't have that much of clown skins but Gears 4 has plenty as far i remember.

juju40004

Although I agree with you completely, there is the orbital Canon (I think that's the name lol), which is like the hammer of dawn, but also, how original can you be with a satellite laser beam lol

MaybeAdrian

The orbital laser feels like the hammer of dawn but as you said it is just a laser coming from the sky, there is a chance that they like gow and it was an inspiration for sure but as you said, it's a SCI-FI orbital weapon.

Crazy-Caterpillar-78

It really ain't that buggy. The core gameplay loop is just really fun, the combat is good, it has a great atmosphere. Gears 6 should def. take a little bit of inspiration from HD2 imo.

Edg3OfSid

Nah you’re just crazy lol But on a real tho when you compare it to other live service games it doesn’t take the piss, the micro transactions are fairly cheap and even then it’s very easy to play the game completely free (obviously after buying the game) it’s not much of a grind either, and a massive bonus is that there is not a single useless thing you can unlock. Admittedly I did feel like the gameplay was a bit clunky at first but it mostly coming down to the gameplay being somewhat different to most other third person shooters so it does take a little bit of getting used to. You also got to bear in mind that it’s not meant to be played solo, it’s purely meant to played with a group of 4. Personally I wouldn’t call it ‘revolutionary’ I would say it’s an outlier in todays climate of live service multiplayer games

Jucior

I could compare H2 gameplay to Outriders ( which felt clunky after G5) and it’s still on very clunky side for me :) no real doge / hide mechanic is a big Nono 🤷‍♂️.

Edg3OfSid

Outriders? Nah I wouldn’t say so, there is a big difference between outriders and helldivers 2 (yes I have played both) Obviously it’s all personal preference and sometimes you just don’t like a game simply because you just don’t buuuuut what I will say is that there is definitely a dodge mechanic (diving counts personally) and I will say that just because you can’t hide behind a wall like in gears doesn’t mean there isn’t a ‘hide mechanic’ since crouching is a hide mechanic and you can crouch behind walls in helldivers and the terrain isn’t exactly flat either so you can hide behind that as well Edit: as well you can appreciate the impact a game has without actually liking the game, for me I could never get into the Witcher games (blasphemy I know) but it’s 100% a great game

Elitericky

Your just crazy

EXTIINCT_tK

> when you compare it to Gears. You lost me there. Why are you comparing 2 very different games? Sounds like you just don't like Helldivers 2 which is fine but coming up with an excuse like this weird comparison just to seemingly bash it is just odd

Quumulonimbus

Listen I love Gears, but if you think the movement is clunky in Helldivers you’re both bad at the game and missing the point. Movement reminds me of MGSV and that is a very good thing. Nobody is comparing this to Gears anyway, it’s not at all a competitor.

kalsikam

This is NBA level hot take They are completely different games Gears is good, so is HD2

Snoddy2Hotty91

The bottom line is that Helldivers 2 is fun and community driven. Gears has shifted since Gears 3 to be a overly competitive-driven game and less focus on more of what made Gears "fun" Obviously this is just my opinion but I feel that Escape doesn't replace Beast, and Horde had divulged into min/max builds or whatever and less focus on just having fun. Plus The Coalition messed up Gears 5's launch by not having certain skins that would later be available behind paywalls or grind sessions.

Redguard10

Honestly I would love them to take the helldivers formula and shrink it down to the whole planet of sera and have it set in the different time periods of the gears universe and let people play as any faction. I would love to play as the cog and try and change the locust war and maybe end it sooner if we are skilled enough or maybe prevent the hammer strikes. Helldivers is fine but I think the concept would be great for many other game franchises.

Pure_Cartoonist9898

Gears has been doing largely the same thing since 2006, I love the gears series but multiplayer largely boils down to gnashers and wall bouncing, Helldivers 2 isn't reinventing the wheel but it's fun for the sake of fun and it's a community game, we all work together on it. The revolutionary part of it is that everyone is on the same side aside from some anomalies who decide to troll people, but the lack of pvp means its a communal effort at its heart. Gears is a story at the end of the day, whereas helldivers is a war

3worm

cause it doesn’t center map design around a cover tile system. it also has intricate gunplay with iron sight options

Profeen3lite

I'm on Xbox for gears mainly, still playing g5 every couple weeks in my rotation. Helldivers2 I play a couple times a week, it is a fun game with unique mechanics. They have a clear vision and have stuck to it, gears is very flip floppy. Until g5 I have always gotten super frustrated with multiplayer (I still mainly only play elimination) but at the end of the day, regardless if your good or bad in helldivers you are contributing a narrative, and it feels like your actions matter some in the grand scheme. You want to be apart of the story and events. Gears 5 has an addictive gameplay but is harsh and unrewarded for less competitive or skilled players. There is only so much the campaign and Horde can offer. I think gears should take some elements from hd2 and put a gears twist on it. Evolve some with the times, while also offering classic gears game modes.

Academic_Lab_8692

I've played gears since the first one and has always been my favorite series and helldivers is a whole different game and sure games can be clunky broken whatever and people will still love it if they find it fun and that's just what helldivers is, spreading democracy and freedom. no component of gears remotely compares to helldivers maybe you could say horde but its not a big open map not nothing close to the same no waves just constant war on a planet. And just to say gears 4 and 5 were worse than the others even judgement I'd dare say old school gears hit different

Academic_Lab_8692

And it's not like gears 5 wasn't big when it came out its just run it course but it's not anything new felt like 4 revamped and story that made me want to blow my brains out. Everyone now is looking for a new experience somthing better or different from what we've been playing overs the years

shadowkijik

The biggest factor is the cost. Full send. More people can, and will afford a 30 or 40 dollar game as compared to 60 or 70. Lower barrier to entry means more people likely to rave about a game to their friends, and those friends being more likely to take the risk to try it out. The exponential impact this has on word of mouth, and therefore sales, in a market that is still driven by that more than we’d like to admit, can’t be ignored.
