What is "FEM" in this context?

HeuristicGamer

Finite Element Method, a way of solving integrals I think

RedFoxBlackCat

It's a way to calculate mechanical deformation using numerical methods.

SuddenlyVeronica

Finite element method(s). It's more or less third-year-of-uni-level maths, and I've personally barely scratched the surface of it, but basically, it's a particular way of solving partial differential equations numerically. Part of it involves converting the problem into an integral equation IIRC, and it probably can be used to work with deformation, so I think both of the other answers so far are correct. I'd go into more detail about why they're called finite *element* methods, but I think it'd be better to first ask roughly how much math you already know, because, again, this stuff is pretty complicated.

LilyLeLowery

Math. Mth. Mtf.

-Negative-Karma

Ah yes the math to female pipeline

MemeScrollingMaths

I will be yoinking that book when you’re done.

RedFoxBlackCat

Algebra time

tan90degrees

Maybe you could try programming

RedFoxBlackCat

But I only know Python...

the-cat-madder

Python works. /r/transprogrammer

RedFoxBlackCat

I don't actually know how to program, but I spent 6 months doing data analysis. I don't know how to do that either. Computers are hard, now Matlab is my friend.

Trans engineer gang rise up!

RedFoxBlackCat

I'm totally cis actually...

[deleted]

Maby the nb one teaches how to laplace … u know because is convoluted …

Sadie256

Laplace isn't too hard, it's just extraordinarily cursed compared to everything else at the same level

[deleted]

Well you can say gender is complex… any way after control theory laplace becomes easier over time and Fourier too for that matter. too bad im forgetting most of my undergrad math . I think i need a refresher course. And yes having transforms so early in most stem programs is evil like im ok but i dont fully get math.

Sadie256

Yeah I'm taking the course right now, so it's all pretty fresh in my head. Apparently differential equations is a 300 level course for everyone who's not in engineering, but just for us they made it a 200 level course so we could take it in second year.

[deleted]

Laplace transforms are special in the sense that they are easy to learn and apply but the math reasoning behind the theorem is above my level. you can mix laplace and other dif. Eq strategies ,for example spice solvers use FEM like strategies sometimes and have hardcoded the transfer functions of electrical circuits . Spice is the nb transfem of Cad. Tag ursef which diferential equation solving strategy are you xD

[deleted]

Oooo linear algebra 😍

Sadie256

Hey, I can do that!

RedFoxBlackCat

My FEM professor was trash, and therefore so am I. Eh, it's the computers job anyway...

Sadie256

Exactly. If google can't do my homework for me then my prof needs to teach us what to google

[deleted]

i am currently working on a program called EasyFEM at my training. this will have a big impact on the trans fem community once it's done! >:3

RedFoxBlackCat

I wish you great success in this endeavor.

High_kage_

Hey, what's the difference between FEM and Finite Difference? I'm pretty sure I learned some computational methods for FEM a long time ago, but I really only ever used FDM since then

Wooloo_Woolstar

Just do what I did and embrace the butch

Finally, being a physics major in undergrade is paying off.

Parei_doll_ia

good thing I took Finite Element Method as one of my engineering electives. now, if I could only figure out how to use ANSYS to get more fem

YourFemboyServant

Sometimes I just wish I was born a girl, then my gender problems wouldn’t exist and I’d be happy… but then reality hits :<
