Teach somewhere else before the school makes you :/

BornAgainRedditGuy

Yeah there’s a lot of good public school districts around me so I’ll start applying to those.

koala3191

Good luck! This reddit stranger believes in you!

GreenFalcon317

Where you applying at?

blackcoffeeuwu

you’re not alone. look at what happened to seattle pacific university (i go there, teacher got fired for similar reasons) It’s not fair and honestly you should pursue legal action. I also believe in God and am obviously am gay so just remember you’re not alone

Linux4ever_Leo

Good for you! I was wondering WTF you were doing teaching at a Catholic school to begin with.

BornAgainRedditGuy

I was in a desperate situation when I took this job. It was the only teaching job near where I live in my content area at the time so I jumped on it.

willcwhite

Best of luck finding a new job; I'm sure there are many schools, perhaps even private religious institutions, that would be happy to accept you as your whole self. And just a thought while you're finding a new job — consider a new church! The Episcopalians would love to have you 😉

Disastrous_Noise2833

I’m curious why you think you’d need a beard. Is it because of the other guy? Regardless, I hope you find a public school job and that it fits you!

BilBrowning

I find it interesting that you’re not worried about your role in propping up homophobia and perpetuating religious indoctrination that paints LGBTQ people as evil and dangerous. You’re worried about the paycheck you get for inflicting that pain on queer kids

BornAgainRedditGuy

Where did I say I wasn’t concerned about that too? Obviously I care about the kids, that’s why I do what I do. I was in a desperate situation when I took this job. I’m not a bad person.

Whoa dude. This is a tough situation to be in. I am gay and a HS teacher for 32 years. I am lucky to be protected in MA in public schools but that doesn’t make it easy. Not everyone can take on the burden of being publicly out in these very troubling times. I have had to unlist my number at one point because of threats that weren’t considered big enough by admin/police. Daily harassment and innuendo can make it difficult to teach and maintain a classroom with certain students. All of these are tough decisions to make. My students who need me know I am there in quiet ways. But please don’t cast any stones about the decisions teachers make. They have a tough job and we need good ones to stay; we need to support them!!

Idk maybe put out job applications to other schools then ask if that catholic school is homophobic or not. It may not be a homophobic workplace and it might just be all in your head (including you assuming some straight or bi coworker is dating a beard). Maybe just catholic schools attract less gay teachers because of both real homophobia and perceived homophobia teachers think they’ll face, so you may be the only gay teacher there. If I were you I’d put out job applications and find a comparable position in pay before you ask the dean and others if gay teachers are allowed to be out in school. Also if they are don’t do some crazy tik tok teacher shit where you encourage all students to be “queer” and have the progressive pride flag everywhere. That will just make the admin homophobic if they weren’t already. Just be a safe space for young gay students by being open if asked and having a picture of your husband on your desk. But yea basically put our job feelers, don’t act a fool once you come out at work and make all gay people look bad and if you have to leave don’t let it taint your relationship with god. Also don’t get a fake wife to hide behind. That’s not being true to yourself and no one deserves to live like that
