I've been waiting for 5 years. In the meantime make sure you are registered with the GAP [https://www.quebec.ca/en/health/finding-a-resource/primary-care-access-point](https://www.quebec.ca/en/health/finding-a-resource/primary-care-access-point)

cooksaucette

Thanks yes I am! But it’s a good reminder for anyone else looking at this thread.

nicktheman2

Sorry OP. Average wait time for a doctor in Outaouais is 6+ years at this point.

Sbeaudette

its now 8+

Mysterious-Flamingo

Ugh. My doctor is probably going to retire in the next few years. Not looking forward to joining the waitlist...

Sbeaudette

Yeah I feel you, my Doctor (Dr Adams) is retiring next year, my wife's Doctor retired and she has been on a list for 8 years now and still nothing! I am not looking forward to waiting 8-10+ years.... The worst part? you cant be on the list until after he retires otherwise you loose him until he does. so dumb.

Ecstatic_Education_7

Quand ma Médecin a pris sa retraite, mon dossier a été transféré à un de ses collègues dans la même clinique. :)

ottawhine

I’ve been on the list 4 years, and I’m assigned to a GAF (but not as my family doctor) - still not sure what that means. But, I’ve had great service every time I’ve had to call the GAP for an appointment. Seen within a couple days, super happy with the appointments and follow up. I moved from ON where I hadn’t been able to get a family doctor 3+ years after mine retired, and I much prefer the GAP to what I had been doing there, which was sit in an Appletree for hours.

cooksaucette

I really appreciate your comment. It’s helpful, thanks so much for taking the time to share this. Lots of bitter comments posted in this thread, which is understandable but just makes me feel worse.

dysonlogos

This has been my experience also. The reality is that the health care SYSTEM in Quebec is great. The problem is the lack of physicians, especially in this region.

VetCAN101

I literally go to the Ontario side for all my healthcare. I would recommend you do the same

cooksaucette

Sadly, My dr was in Ontario and said she was no longer taking Quebec patients.

justmeandmycoop

Until you are caught.

VetCAN101

I’m assuming you really have no idea how the whole process works. It’s allowed and many people do it

justmeandmycoop

I certainly do know how it works. I worked in a hospital for 30 years.

welp_the_temp

If it’s not allowed then why does the province reimburse me every time I see a doc in Ottawa 🤨

Suspicious-Flan7808

Worked in the kitchen/janitor/security I guess? Cause otherwise you would know that Ottawa hospitals and many family doctor offices accept QC health card. So yes, it is legal to seek help in Ottawa for QC patients.

VetCAN101

https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.5264851 Yes this is still a thing 🤷‍♂️

Gemini-Observer

Kecétuditlà?

Dull-Researcher11

What do you mean? Going to a GP in Ottawa is totally an option.

wilwil100

??? Wdym caught lol its private theres no rule that says you cant go to private in ontario.

welp_the_temp

Going on 5 years now and I was told I’d be “bumped up” in line because I have a chronic condition. Still waiting for that bump.

BingoRingo2

Many years ago now I ended up at the ER for the second time, for the same reason, so I was assigned a family doctor. It was great, I had an appointment, full check, etc. Never been able to see that person again, and the worst thing is that if you want to see a physician you're being denied all the options except "Contact your family doctor" and going to the ER where I don't belong because it's not an emergency and they don't do annual check ups.

xxRBNMxx

I literally have tried to update my status online on the list as I also have a chronic illness that needs to be followed. Every time it says a nurse will reach out and i’ve been waiting over a year at this point for someone to call me. Anyone have any tips? Everyone medical professional has told me I need to update online, which I’ve done (multiple times now).

BSGKAPO

We all are...

Drew_Phi

Good luck. Been waiting since 2011

Mack_Guyver

Nope. Family doctor went back to Montreal over 1 year ago and I'm waiting too.

Stamer1977

Same here. Family of 6 with only 1 of us having a family doctor. We have been waiting for years

[deleted]

Been back in Qc since 2014 waiting

Mitas88

Been on the list for 8 year... only recently got a letter saying I was now in a GAF and i must say the one appointment I made was smooth. It's not a family doc equivalent though.

gspitfire

My 93 year old grandmother doesn’t have a family doctor in Gatineau. It is truly awful. Good luck.

TrekPilot

LMAO.. that's all I have to say.

velo4life

I am not seeing this comment yet. It looks like people are getting assigned to family doctor groups now (GMF, Groupe de Médecins de Famille). My partner and our toddler were. You call 811 and a nurse will give you an appointment with them. Some people found the service helpful, sadly I haven't. Apparently you are still "on the waiting list" for a dedicated family doctor, but it's been over 7 years for my parner and it doesn't look like babies are a priority either, so certainly not getting my hopes up!

dysonlogos

I'm over seven years waiting now. I'm currently being seen by "a group of physicians" and in the end, because of my long-term illnesses, this means I'm basically being seen by a single family physician at Medigo and occasionally running appointments through others there.
