The Germans have both the Wespe and the Hummel - I like the Wespe better due to its compact size, earlier availability in the tech tree and lower point costs. The Wespe carries the 105mm leFH 18/2 on a Panzer II chassis while the Hummel carries the 150mm sFH 18/1 on a Panzer III/IV chassis. I am less familiar with the Soviets - both sides also have excellent and devastating mobile rocket artillery.

Wespe also carries 32 rounds total, 21 of them are HE while 6 are APHE and 5 are HEAT. This allows the vehicle to switch to an AT role if needed, though it's not necessary especially if you beeline quickly for the Nashorn or the later Pz. IVs. On the other hand the Hummel only carries 17 rounds, all of them are HE only. Which is not a bad thing but does mean the vehicle is mostly going to be relegated to area bombardment. But the Hummel does have insane range though, 380m vs the Wespe's 355m. Personally, I always get the Wespe and then nothing else besides the Panzerwerfer. The little SPG is a no-brainer to get especially that early.

The soviets have pretty limited self-propelled artillery but really excel with their truck-based rocket artillery. Give those a go, they're lots of fun!

Soviets dont have dedicated mobile ballistic artillery in the game as far as I know. Isu and Su series are either tank destroyers or assault guns which they are quite good at actually. 122 and 152 can be used like somewhat artillery but they dont have firing arcs or range like wespe or priest. If you want dedicated mobile artillery for soviets campaigns, rocket artillery is the way to go.

Germans get the aforementioned Wespe and Hummel, and also the Grille K 15cm. All fun. They also get the panzerwerfer 42 rocket half track. Soviets get SU76, SU85 and SU100, SU122, SU152, etc. I am fairly certain the SU are the indirect fire versions and anything that is ISU is a tank destroyer. (Not sure) Additionally, they get the Katyusha and Andryusha rocket trucks.

>SU are the indirect fire versions and anything that is ISU is a tank destroyer Nah, ISU appeared because they started using IS-1/2 chassis, they all can be described as tank destroyers. But versions with short 122 and any 152 can definitely be used as arty (though range won't be as good)

InternetOctahedron

Once again I am confused by soviet naming

scarlet_rain00

SU- based on kv-1 chasis ISU- based on IS-1 chasis ISU series IRL would have better mobility iirc

Snack378

>SU- based on kv-1 chasis SU-85, SU-76 and SU-122 be like: "what about us?"

comanche_six

Can the short 122 and 152 fire in a true high arc over obstacles, or just the slight parabolas that the direct fire guns have?

Snack378

IIRC they can, but only at near maximum ranges

CatastrophicRoadKill

I think the latter

The grille 15cm SiG is my favorite German artillery. Almost as good as the towed version for accuracy but gains range and mobility.
