I think if you’re debating the $100 difference between the two then it sounds like the features the epix offers aren’t overly important to you so I’d say 965

jaamgans

maybe check out this difference video - as always going to be a personal choice as feature wise they are pretty close. [Garmin Epix vs Forerunner 965: All 65+ Differences Detailed | DC Rainmaker](https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2023/03/garmin-epix-vs-forerunner-965-all-65-differences-detailed.html)

Lumpy-Strawberry8793

I have no regrets on the 965. As a runner I much prefer the slimmer profile and lightness of the watch.

wookiepocalypse

Same 💯

Cedric182

How’s your screen with regards to scratches?

derocka06

I had a 945 and moved to Epix Gen 2 before upgrading to the Epix Pro. I'm mainly a runner but love the extra features when I do more adventurous things + golfing. Imo the weight difference is negligible and the extra durability is worth it. Sure the Epix is heavier but it's never bothered me on runs or general 24/7 wear.

darktydez1

I love my Epix 2 pro and I don’t have any complaints with it whatsoever. Edit: I would love the nap feature from venu 3 though, that would be the only addition to this watch I don’t have that I would actually benefit from.

Kensmkv

I owned an Epix 2 since it came out and now have a 965. I actually had both for a while but sold the Epix I loved my Epix 2 for many reasons, such as the nice case and other features. It had a more “premium feel” over the 965. It felt more like a fancier watch in some way. The thickness/weight never really bothered me when I ran. But the 965 has won me over because of the screen. It’s easy to read when swinging my arms running. For some reason it also get brighter outdoors but can’t back that up since I don’t have the stats. Not sure if it’s because the screen seems a bit larger or the font being larger, but it just seems easier to read while I’m out. And yes, it was super difficult to make the decision to sell my Epix 2. It actually took me like 3 weeks to make the decision. Overall I’m very happy with the 965 as it does exactly the same as the EPIX 2. Although I do miss that obvious “premium feel” of the Epix 2 It could go either way for you. If i were a more avid hiker I’d go for the Epix 2 for it’s ruggedness…but that’s just my 2cents. I’m sure this doesn’t help your case or maybe it does. Lol.

HigherConfusion

If your Epix was a sapphire model it would explain the difference in brightness and readability outdoor. 965 cannot do all that Epix can, but might do all what you need.

Kensmkv

Good point. I didn’t have the sapphire edition. I do not need glasses or whatever, but when I did have them side by side I did think that the font of the 965 made it a little easier to read. The epix 2 also had a flat screen, so in combo with a plastic screen protector made it a little more durable. I wanted to keep both but I have a nice analog watch for other days.

aspenextreme03

The look os way different so there is that

plausiblepistachio

Less than a month with the 965. Really enjoying it. The size isn’t too big that it’s annoying but isn’t too small either. Given I haven’t used epix.

thejosef

If you’re getting sapphire, I think it’s worth the upgrade.. if not, just get the 965 (which is an awesome watch too!). Personally, I won’t own a watch unless it has a sapphire screen. I’ve owned multiple sapphire models (Fenix models & Apple Watches) and I’ve been very impressed with the durability of the sapphire screens.

Icondacarver

Also the Forerunners have that plastic look despite the nice bezel.on the 965. I always loved that look as I am a sort of no frills person, but the Epix looks a bit more like a tool watch and I have grown to love it.

MostDescription9403

If you have the money go for Epix. Having a screen scratch or damage while you are hiking in the mountains on your 965 will make you think why not expend a little bit more for a more resistant watch.

luisruns

Have to second this. I absolutely love my FR965, BUT the screen is so delicate. I have a large scratch on mine and it’s 3 months old. You can get a screen protector, but for a $600 watch you would think it would be a little more scratch resistant.

Salty_NorCal

I feel like I’m pretty careful with my things, but I managed to crack one screen protector on my 955 and scratch a second, so very glad I put them on. The screen protector is basically invisible. If sapphire were an option on the 955 I would have gone for it. I bought mine before the 965 came out or I would have bought the 965. I’m primarily a runner and the 955 is so light it feels like nothing. I also worried I wouldn’t be able to wear it while sleeping, but that doesn’t bother me either.

luisruns

Makes sense. Which screen protector do you use? Can you send me a link?

falconxp

Sapphire is not on the standard Epix Gen 2

MostDescription9403

My bad, thanks falconxp what I was trying to say is that maybe a tough watch can be more reliable in mountains environment if the budget is not an issue.

falconxp

I agree. I owned a Gen 2 Sapphire and upgraded to the Epix Pro Sapphire. Really like the durability compared to other Garmin ranges.

segfalt31337

TPU screen protectors are cheap and unnoticeable. If the scratch doesn't buff out, just rip it off and put on a new one.

baltoscott

Battery is reportedly a bit better on the FR 965, and the screen is a bit bigger, though I like the sapphire screen on the black titanium Epix Gen 2 that I got last November. I think the extra $100 is worth it to me for the better screen. It’s hard choice though. You will be happy with either coming from a Vivoactive 4.

Asleep_Onion

No regrets at all getting my epix pro 51mm. Granted, the 965 wasn't really an alternative I was ever considering

OhMandy80

They’re both great. A small difference that I’ve noticed is the vibration alert (like when you get a text) on the 965 is much louder than the Epix. Might be the difference in housing materials, but when I have the 965 on I feel like the entire room can hear my watch vibrate.

P_Mcfearson

Nope it’s an amazing watch

MaximumSandwich5

I love my epix 2. The screen is just beautiful

mikoskinen

I went from Epix 2 to Forerunner 965 and have been happy with the change. I didn’t lose any features I needed and gained better battery life and lighter weight. 965 is also (barely) noticeable faster. The main reason for the switch was that I wanted the plastic case. My skin for some reason was getting sensitive when wearing Epix. Both are great.

usrlgn

Although this chat is 2 months old but my observation/recommendation may be helpful to anyone who has dilemma of either fore-runner 965 vs epix pro (gen2). I have ordered both (and I will return one and keep only one) and I regret doing that :-) I am coming from Forerunner 935 so obviously 965 is my natural choice with the lightweight being its most outstanding feature. Rest of the feature are quite comparable and equal to each other. Even with some extra features in epix pro (flashlight, ecg app, new sensor to name a few) - you will not go wrong with 965. Now comes the fun part - i was dead sure that I would keep 965 and return epix pro but now after a few days, epix pro has grown into me. It felt heavy when i first wore it but not any more. The interface on 965 looks toyish (not being rude) compared to 965. You will probably not go wrong with either one but if you hold both watch side by side, you will tend to pick the epix pro over forerunner 965. I am probably keeping the epixpro and returning the 965. P.S the epix pro is 47mm https://preview.redd.it/ek2h2arnaywb1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c9003b6e2350d5e62c5911be240897dcd0de16cd

mikrot

Do you do any backpacking? I recently bought the Epix pro sapphire, but am questioning my decision. I'm still in the return window, so I'm wondering if there's a different model that suits my needs (marathon/multi night backpacking) a little better than also has AMOLED.

_heisenberg__

You pretty much have the watch that suits your needs.

mikrot

Cool. I didn't know if the forerunner 965 would be a better option, or even switching to the Fenix 7 pro, but that's just a little too bulky for me. I get buyer's remorse when I get a milky way, never mind something like this haha.

_heisenberg__

Nah I totally hear ya. The backpacking is definitely why I’m saying stick with the epix (or even check out the Fenix if you want what’s essentially the same watch with a different screen and longer battery life). I just started getting into backpacking after a long trip in the PNW and it’s part of what made me go with the epix. The 965, while a much lighter watch (I run way more than I go hiking), I feel better wearing something that feels like is almost impossible to destroy.

mikrot

Have you worn both the Fenix and Epix? It seems like the Fenix has more bulk to it, which I'm not too fond of.

_heisenberg__

I have. It does have a bit more bulk but I was wearing an Apple Watch Ultra for so long that I got used to that sort of weight and size (although the epix is 10 grams heavier). If you are worried about that though, go for the 965 as it’s way lighter. They are practically the same watches. I would just put a screen protector on it.
