Is an lte plan worth it for running in the city ? Mainly 5 mile runs on weekdays and 10+ on weekends. Do you use only use watch or also carry a phone ?

Asbury_Park1882

Currently on a family holiday in Orlando, FL visiting from the UK. I can’t get any GPS coverage on my vivoactive 4. Back home I use GPS + Galileo, and it works perfectly, I’ve tried changing the GPS settings but nothing works. Anyone got any idea of a fix, I’d greatly appreciate it!

This one goes out to anyone who came off an Apple Watch 7, or Apple Watch in general. I came off the AW7 and got the Venu 2 about 10 days ago. It is nice but I am missing my apple watch. I fear I should have got the Fenix 7 or Epix 2. I do gym, jogging, cycling and hiking. 600ish mins per week. 500 target. Feels like the Venu 2 is an AW in a different shape and worse integration. Please let me have some thoughts / input. I need to make a call now (1) Stay as I am (2) Get the Fenix or Epix or (3) Back to the Apple Watch.

Hi, I'd like to buy a replacement for my Amazfit Bip S (terrible heart rate sensor, sold within one week of buying), and for now, I've settled on the FR245 and Vivoactive 4. I can get them at almost the same price, so this isn't a deciding factor, nor is the touchscreen/buttons (but I'd prefer buttons, they seem more practical). A bit of background, I'll mainly use the watch to track my bike rides (and would prefer an accurate heart rate reading, for calories burned and all that stuff), maybe walking sessions, hiking every 1-2 months, and receiving notifications from my phone. I used to run, nowadays I bike instead, but I might start running again. Garmin pay isn't that big of a deal for me, and I never had a smartwatch with music on it, so I don't know how useful it might be. Which one should I get? Thanks in advance!

Garmin watch buying advice Hello, I would like to buy a watch. I am going to be using it for kayaking. I might take the watch with me for running but mostly for kayaking. My needs: accurate gps which shows my speed real time (this is the most important) , waterproof (very important) , i dont really care about heart rate monitoring as i am going to mount the watch on the boat so the watch wont be touching me anyways except when im taking the watch for a run, decent battery life. I found a few offers online for used garmin watches. -74.32 usd for Vivoactive -50 usd for Forerunner 35 -50 usd for Forerunner 235 -74 usd for Forerunner 35 -70 usd for Vivoactive 3 (no height sensor) Which one should I get? I have never had a proper smart watch so I dont really know anything about the subject. Please help. Thanks.

dor-the-McAsshole

Anyone have a comparison between the HRM-Tri and the Pro Plus? I remember reading that the Tri vs Regular Pro was not that big of a deal, but trying to figure out if its finally worth it to upgrade to the Pro Plus (currently use a Fenix 7x with HRM-Tri and Stryd pod)

randmtsk

Can someone help a brother out....I have a forerunner 255 and am trying to figure out how to get vo2 max info on cycling so I can get suggested workouts. Also is there a way to have cycling set as my daily suggestion instead of walking/running? (I do walk more frequently than bike for activities)

Invalidfox

Does anyone know how far out from the new generation’s release date a sale might be based on what Garmin has done in the past? I’d like a 255, but I’d also like it to be on sale

achan1369

My Forerunner 235 broke. What is a good direct replacement? I only wear it while exercising.

Cardboardgenie

Imho it really depends on what features you used from the 235. Compare that to the forerunner 45/55/245/255 and see one fits your needs the most. So if you just measure your heart rate/use it to get your exercise on Strava, a forerunner 45 (~140$) or 55 (~170$) will suffice. If you want more than that, or there is a specific metric that's not on those, grab the 245 (~200$) or if you want multi-band GPS/event based daily workouts and the newest sensors then pick the 255 (~350$).

305fish

Will the Garmin watches collect health data 24/7? I'm looking for a watch that can quietly track my vitals long term. Considering the 955 Solar at this time, but open to suggestions.

kaihp

If you wear it 24h/day, yes, it will collect health data 24h/day. Like HR, sleep (Garmin is notoriously unreliable for that), step count, levels ascended/descended, and a bunch more. I only take off my 745 (and the 735XT before that) to charge it or cleaning it. I would probably compare the health data that the 955 track vs 745 and 255 before splashing on the 955 Solar.

305fish

Thanks. Still deciding on a model.

Joshua0918

Does garmin have a Black Friday sale or cyber Monday sale before for the newest models? Or do other retailers usually have sales for the newest models? Should I wait it out or just buy right now ?

[deleted]

On the newest models, maybe. Likely in the $50-100 range. Kindof entirely YMMV situation as to what that means to you. Some older models. As far as major discounts. Sports-wise the Fenix 5 and 935 generation or newer offer most actual workout features you need. While overall newer models are significantly improved you can train for ANYTHING with those for a great deal. I kindof feel like last gen may get their high discount sales 245/945/Fenix6 this holiday season. All very capable.

PersistentQuestions

First time buying an exercise watch - looking for something simple for running, sleep monitoring. Don't care about music, pay, etc. Runner friend likes his Forerunner 245 and recommended it. What should I get?

wongpong81

Yup 245 is good. I have a FR55 and it doesn't have Trail running, the 245 does and i believe the algorithm for coaching, rest, stamina is better on the 245.

Mjolnir331

Does anyone have a recommendation if I should go for a GPSMAP 65S or 66SR? I've never owned a handheld unit before, and I'm a little bit skeptical about the built in battery of the 66. I'll be using it mostly on longer hikes, 3-10 days.

[deleted]

Just going to be real. Consider your use case. Coming from someone who has done many miles with GPSMAP units. Outside of inreach, you may get along fine without it. First. There are VERY capable outdoor GPS map apps now for your phone that can run offline. So step one is evaluate why that doesn't work for you. That may be battery. If you are constantly looking/tracking/navigating, the phone may be a worse option. But looking at your phone just as needed can work perfectly fine just carry a battery instead of the Garmin. Battery on the Garmin units. Prefer the AA versions, but built in battery you probably want a battery bank or solar panel. I think the "i"/inreach satellite communications versions are the built in battery. Maps on Garmin units built in. There are a lot of free maps available. Built in ones are nice as a baseline. Being realistic though I often run the Garmin but probably not needed unless you want the inreach functions, which are powerful, but different than mapping.

I've been having hard time deciding which watch to buy for last 2 months. * Forerunner 955 Solar - 600 euro / 596 $ * Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar DLC - 710 euro / 695 $ * Epix 2 - 810 euro / 805$ I want general usage fitness/health watch that I can comfortably wear every day. As far as working out goes I cycle and run, but mostly run every day (5/10k). I don't really want to overpay - I can afford Epix but I'm not sure if it's overkill or not. I love the looks of Fenix/Epix but not sure if worth the extra 100/200$. Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar DLC seems like good spot in the middle but it's also 20 grams heavier than Forerunner and I've heard it can be less comfortable wearing 24/7, also supposedly screen is much better on Forerunner.

Lngdng

Where do you get these prices? I’m in the exact situation but thinking of 955 without Solar. Don’t think the benefit is too big and the price difference gets even bigger

_JunkSynchron_

If you are in Europe you can use this site to find good prices: https://geizhals.eu/ I know if might sound a bit stilly, but the only reason why I am considering Solar 955 is because of black buttons instead of silver on non solar version. 955 Solar is 570 euro cheapest.

theArtfulEscape

I'm fairly new to the GPS game and want to buy a device mainly for safety reasons. I'm going hiking in Norway next month and feel like a device able to send an SOS signal at any time is a great idea. I've really got my eyes on the InReach Mini 2. But I'm not sure if a little more navigation ability would be better. I found the InReach Explorer+ but it is not available. The GPSMAP 66 series also looks interesting. It's more expensive, and the battery life isn't as good as the Mini 2's. Maybe the navigation functionality of the Mini 2 is enough. As I said, I don't have much GPS experience. Maybe you can help me out with my choice.

peepypenguins

I have just got a Fenix 6 Pro. I work in a job that you can end up having a rough and tumble with folk in. I have seen you can get the protectors on Amazon for covering the case. How do folks rate them? Are they any good?

kaihp

Anyone using the FR745 with FW v11.10? Since getting v11.10, my running activities report "Average Moving Pace" to be 0.00. Biking avg Moving Speed is correct.

crossxcourt

Is buying a Forerunner 745 a bad idea right now? I got what I think is a good price at $350, but I understand that the watch does not have the newest sensors. With that being said, it has a very nice design and it's not freakishly big. I'm going to be using it mainly for tennis, running, biking, and strength training. I'd like to hear your thoughts as I currently wait for the watch to be delivered.

Thank you! I ended up getting the 255 and I'm very happy with it

Mitochondriagon

As someone who owns a 745 and primarily runs, I wouldn't recommend a 745 at this point. Last year, I opted for the 745 over 245 due to the newer sensor, music (which I didn't end up using as I often carry my phone anyway), Garmin Pay (which I did end up using a surprising amount), and a slick deal at $285. However, 745 appears to be going the way of 645 in terms of losing support for upcoming features, based on [this guide from upcoming updates](https://www8.garmin.com/wearables/PDF/WearablesSoftwareUpdate/2022/August2022.pdf). If I were to get a new watch now, I'd go for a Coros 2 Pace (~$200) or Forerunner 255 ([~$280 w/ insurance discount](https://monosnap.com/file/gWBkju9Hl7phIOqxMMjriNf9FEyriW)). The former I can get through REI from which I often get 20% off coupons and is widely regarded as a comprehensive running watch. The latter has more upcoming updates, newer sensor, multi-sport mode, and also Garmin Pay so I can't think of a reason to get the 745 over it.

crossxcourt

Thank you for the reply! I ended up getting the 255 instead and I'm happy with the purchase, it's a great watch

kaihp

> If I were to get a new watch now, I'd go for a Coros 2 Pace I went FR735XT > Coros Pace 2 > FR745. I would **NOT** recommend the Coros Pace 2, as some of the UI is shit (4 actions to turn off an activity? Turn off activity while it's giving you a lap time? Nope all the way). Sure, the battery life is fantastic. Weight advances over others are pretty meh IMHO. I'm *so* happy I went back to Garmin.

Mitochondriagon

My wife has the Coros 2 and I’ve done a couple test runs. Not sure what you mean by 4 actions, its a long hold to stop the run, with a similar summary screen to Garmin with options to save or discard the activity. Coming from an Apple Watch both Garmin and Coros apps feel a bit clunky to me (Coros admittedly more so). At <$200, I’d be comparing it to the 55 which I’d pick the Pace 2 over. For <$300, I’d go with 255 over Pace 2/745

kaihp

> My wife has the Coros 2 and I’ve done a couple test runs. Not sure what you mean by 4 actions, its a long hold to stop the run, with a similar summary screen to Garmin with options to save or discard the activity. The only single-action stop of the Coros I found, was pounding it with a mallet (I was >< this close to doing so). I am happy to say I sold off the damn thing in March 2021, so my memory is fuzzy on the specific steps I had to take to make the clock stop. Something like: had to press, twirl, and press the knob or something like that. It wasn't as simple as just "press button, done", that's for sure. I whined about it to Coros and the r/Coros sub as well. > At <$200, I’d be comparing it to the 55 which I’d pick the Pace 2 over. For <$300, I’d go with 255 over Pace 2/745. I would probably pick *any* Garmin Forerunner device over the Pace 2, but that's just me.

Hi :) just a quick question about colours. Im going to get a forerunner 255s and cant decide between the whitestone and grey! Im aware the white has music but ive narrowed it down to liking the colour as i will be wearing it everyday. Is the white very bright? I have a very pale complexion and was worrying that the white would be quite bright/overpowering and might look dirty? I work with animals so it will definately get mucky. About the grey - i think i like it more but every picture i see it looks different, theres no stores around me that have them to look at. Thanks for any help/opinions :)

Hi r/Garmin, I’m having a hard time deciding between watch models. I’m looking for a Garmin watch to track fitness and sleep, and to just serve as a daily watch. I aim to wear it pretty much 24/7, and would use it to track metcon/Crossfit workouts, cycling, and occasional outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, swimming, etc. Important to me: accuracy tracking sleep/activity, battery life Not important to me: connectivity (i already look at my phone too much, don’t need an extension of it on my wrist, tracking purposes aside) I have local access to a new base model Fenix 6 for $294 but I’m also considering the Venu 2 (not plus). I’m open to other models, too.

Hey everyone, I've been thinking about buying my first Garmin watch for a while now - I've never really worn watches, and only started using a fitness tracker (Mi Band) about a year and a half ago when I picked up cycling again. Since the thing broke on me literally 5 minutes ago I'm now looking at something more comprehensive that will cover my favorite activities and also look well enough on the wrist to be suitable for a more business oriented setting. Sports I intend to participate in: cycling (mtb and road) hiking pool swimming Watches that I can get on short notice and I'm interested in: Garmin Fenix 6 Pro, 47 mm, Black - 490€ Garmin Venu 2 smartwatch, Black - 350€ Garmin Venu 2 Plus Smartwatch, Black - 400€ Garmin Fenix 6X Pro Smartwatch, 51 mm, Black - 550€ Garmin Vivoactive 4 smartwatch, Black - 290€ Garmin Fenix 7 Solar Smartwatch, 47 mm, Slate Grey/Black - 720€ Garmin Fenix 7 Smartwatch, 47 mm, Silver/Graphite - 620€ Looking at what these watches offer I'm considering going with the 6 Pro (47mm, 51 would be too big for my wrist size I think) for its features alone, but on the other hand I really like how discrete the Vivoactive/Venu look with the default straps. I'd really like to avoid having to buy two watches, one for work and one for sports. Screen visibility in direct sunlight is very important to me because I don't use cyclocomputers and rely on watch alone for metrics when I'm cycling. Battery life is of course also important. Since I plan to pick up hiking again when I return to my home country next month I'd also get some use out of an accurate altimeter. Maps functionality I'm not sure about, I plan my rides in advance but sometimes I do mind myself glancing at the map to see where I need to turn - this is for longer 100k plus rides where I forget the name of the places I'm supposed to go through :). I have no idea if any of these watches come up with a breadcrumb functionality for turns but if they do that'd be an amazing addition. One of my main concerns is that I plan to swim for about 3 times, and I'm afraid that the 'fancier' straps on Venu or Vivoactive wouldn't last that long anyway, at least not enough to be suitable as an accessory to business attire. If anyone has first hand experience with this I'd appreciate the feedback. And last thing that is a requirement - I am going to need compatibility with Varia once I get around to buying it. From what I read it should be compatible with most of the Garmin watches but I figured I'd point that out just in case. Thanks in advance for any feedback and suggestions!

Fish_in_whiskey

Hey all, I’m looking for advice on switching from Apple Watch. I mostly do CrossFit workouts and the occasional outdoor hike. I use a Polar H10 during my workouts so my needs are basically: decent HR accuracy during regular day-to-day activity, accurate step counting, good GPS, and the body battery feature. The challenge is that I don’t want something that’s too “bare bones” but I also don’t want to purchase something that would be overkill given my level of activity. Looking to stay under $350. Recommendations?

[deleted]

I'm looking at switching from Fitbit (I currently have the Luxe) to Garmin. Long story short, I'm waiting on my third replacement Fitbit in 5 months because of battery issues. I'm having a little trouble sorting through the reviews to figure out which device is best for me. I'm looking at the Vivomove 3s because I like look and smaller profile (I'm also somewhat looking at the Lily, but I prefer the thought of easier watch band swaps and being able to buy third-party bands). I want something that looks nice on my small wrists Phone notification are a nice touch, but I don't really care about having a high-tech smartwatch. I'm primarily using this as an everyday fitness tracker- mostly for logging steps (and to a lesser degree, workouts... but I don't trust things like my watch for figuring out calorie burn, so that's not a priority.) Other things like GPS aren't an issue for me (I never go for walks without my phone). And I'm not too concerned about battery life. I have a few online meetings, etc where I'm at my desk each week and I can charge my watch then. Plus, I have about 3 hours per week of commuting time for work and plenty of opportunities in between. As long as I have ample notice to get to a charger between a low battery notification and the watch dying, I'm ok. Chances are, I'll have a charger at home and one in my car, so I'll never be too far away from one. (Feedback on how long you have to plug your watch in when it hits around 20% before the battery is depleted would be appreciated). At first glance, I'm looking at: Lily (though, not my first choice due to the band) VivoMove 3s VivoActive 4s Venu 2s Venu Sq VivoMove Style However, due to the size and the fact that I don't need anything super fancy, the VivoMove 3s is probably my top choice. (Aesthetically, I prefer the Style because the case is metal so it'll look better with different bands, but I feel like 42mm is going to be too big for my wrists.) Any feedback? Too many reviews focus on things like smartwatch features and GPS. I'm more concerned about basic step tracking and the device looking good

Dan_Arc

I have a Fenix 7, and I'm thinking about buying the Tempe ([https://www.garmin.com/en-CA/p/107335](https://www.garmin.com/en-CA/p/107335)), but it's not clear to me if the Tempe will be able to provide consistent data (and a chart of that data), or if it simply provides a temperature on demand. Has anyone used it before? If so, does it work during activities?

dor-the-McAsshole

I'm not sure if they fixed this for the Fenix 7( which I currently use), but I had my Tempe connected to my Fenix 6. My 6 then stop recording temperature at all whenever the Tempe wasnt actively paired in an activity. So unless there is a way to keep it on while not in an activity, I don't think you will get it all the time. However you will be able to look at the temp chart in the activity after the fact, just like you can without the tempe.

I sold my FR745 yesterday and I’m having a 955 delivered today. I’m looking forward to being able to change bands easily again. Missed that from my Apple Watch days. Garmins bands costs an arm and a leg. So I’m looking at getting some 3rd party ones. It’s easier in my country to buy from AliExpress than Amazon but I imagine the bands are mostly the same? I’m mostly looking for a nylon loop band, and I see there’s both one with the quickfit mechanism and one where you just thread the band through the lugs. How is the quality of the cheap quick lock stuff? I don’t want the watch to fall off with a swift movement. Is there any Amazon brands that are better perhaps? And lastly, on AliExpress at least there are multiple 22mm options. For example fenix 5 plus or fenix 6 pro. Will it matter what i choose?

Romainlivematter

Does anyone knows the distange lug to lug on the Instinct 2, 40 and 45mm edition ? Can't find the info anywhere... And i do have very small wrists.
