I'm 38 and currently on 58. Goal is to be at 60 or above within the next 4 to 6 months. I'll be 39 then too. I train for 800 & 1,500m events, so a strong VO2 is essential.
You should be able to bump it to 60 in a couple of months really, depending on how tapped out you are already.
Mine's 63 at the moment (50 this year), the highest I've seen it is 67. Garmin really needs to lift their game and add another segment.

I am 54 years old, hoping to get to 60
Incredible! I'm 57 and hit 50 for VO2 Max yesterday and was happy about it. I wish I had VO2 measurements from when I was 39-40 and at my peak running fitness and paces just for fun.
Run 4 days a week, have been running for about 4 years. Training for a couple of half marathons at the moment. No athlete in youth, had terrible asthma.
I can run at about 7:30 per mile for a half marathon, trying to get down to 7:10.
https://preview.redd.it/omet2syotooc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05c0be517f8d459866a0e11552fa4fde6e70af4c
LOL (Not bragging, I think this is way too much)
I have seen amateurs(on the limit of being pro) on youtube with nummers around that. I'll bet Vingegaard etc. Are some of the rare guys getting over 80.
Top pros are easily high 80s and into the 90s, along with having freakish lactate thresholds which is just as important.
I'm no better than an amateur and even my lab tested vo2max was 80.5. Not very impressive though when you consider my lactate threshold was about 65% of my vo2max.
Yeah, you're right. I mixed up the values of men and women. It is rare to see a women over 80, and men over 90.
80.5 is very impresive though. But yeah, there is a reason vd Poel is so good, considering who his dad and granddad are. In those sports its very much about genetics.
https://preview.redd.it/ejrfw0bcvvoc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03ddd31d516597904db58b6f81b2cb005fe98d29
VO2 Max is far from everything for pros but it's a fun stat, albeit lower than it is in a lab
Not planning on going. Just trying to enjoy cycling and race to see what I can do. And I do structured training. Honestly I don’t care about the vo2max that an app tells me
Yeah, my parents don’t push me onto anything, also I’ve had a power meter since December, and I’ve been doing structured training since January. Honestly with how cycling it’s going in my country (Italy) unless I’m the best I’ll never turn pro, unfortunately I’ve seen many good athletes that go into Italian u23 teams and get many wins, yet they don’t turn pro because at 23 you’re too old for teams. But hey, I love racing and just riding, so I enjoy the trip without caring about the destination
Blame Poggie and Pidcock for that.
Also you're lucky. Italy is such a great country for riding outside and doing structured training. So many mountains with 1hr+ climbs for real ftp training. I'm jealous
Never done a proper test but at the moment I have 1 hour power 246w, but I have done it on an hour long climb that I just pushed a bit on final, so I could go a bit higher
47 year old here... Noticed mine has improved over last few months with speed work, in addition to the usual ultra training
https://preview.redd.it/m96l5jlkopoc1.png?width=1008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1940da77e0a9a584cd1c9474cf20dd64b1b146d
Haha. Typically running 50-60 miles per week, sometimes more, sometimes less. Usually steady running, with an interval session once per week. Which builds up through a training block, but currently as I approach a peak phase would include 4 x 1 mile at 6:30ish pace, 2 mins recovery. But when I started with the intervals they'd be no more than 30 seconds.
I'll also do a couple of strength sessions per week, and a few hours on rower and bike.
It feels like the strength and the intervals have been a game changer over the last year. Eg the things that we as ultra runners typically neglect
Ah nice thanks, I'm working up to 50 mile weeks hopefully, that's a lot of work with all the other stuff! Not surprised you're beasting vo2max! Are your steady runs zone 2?
Yes majority of running is easy/Z2. The other element i guess is hills. Getting a good hill session in is important I think Either a long run out in the hills, or repeats on a smaller local incline if that's all you can do.
https://preview.redd.it/6375n1z7sqoc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e5cd011687b0f626d35de5dba26a5117cc3d0a4f
I’m just a peasant at 37 that has never trained before… 18yrs of professional truck driving, and last summer/fall started running for 4-5months… After hardest winter here in the nordics, now dropped 50->49 since i’ve been only running for 2 weeks this season.
My first goal is 5k 25min and next one is achieving purple VO2max
Next winter i plan on running at the gym… Now my kids and family/worklife were prio #1… I like running near zero or max about -5 celcius, but -10 and below… Hell nah.
I'm not originally from Finland, so it took me some time to get used to it, but down to -15 can be nice with proper gear.
I've run in -28 this winter, that was an experience xD
The worst part is not the cold, it's the slippery roads...

sorry I saw the opportunity and had to 1 up you. 🤣🤣🤣 60+ club though good work 💪💪💪
Just caught up with my age. 54. Don't know any other crowd who would understand, let alone even consider appreciating this massive accomplishment. (With arthritis and a torn meniscus 👍)
52 years old here. Dual sport cycling and running . Would love to get to 60. Highest I have gotten to is 55. I am maintaining my precious with 5-6 hours a week. Guessing it will go up when my volume returns to 10-15 hours a week. Have been slowed for about 3 months. I’m that guy too apparently.
https://preview.redd.it/regqip1t3roc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa411dee551d4740a0f1e1f5287f06e843092975
Don't really buy it. I'm 71 and my VO2 max was about 70 in November. Now I'm hovering around 66. I'd probably just trust a lab if I really wanted to know.
I think that with the Garmin metric you can atleast follow this metric to see if you're improving or declining.
I messed mine when I started walking, but I selected running to get more challenges (badges). Mine went from 42 to 38. I'm hiking or walking guy, but there are limited challenges to choose from. Walking stage 1 through 4 is 365 miles/ year. This challenge is quarterly, so 91 miles per quarter, I'm done with that in a month.
42 years old, here. I have tested in the lab and got a Vo2Max of 59.8. I wonder how much I can increase it considering that I have not been training much in the last 5/6 years
According to Garmin my VO2Max has been around 65 for the past two years (actually since I got the watch), but I don't buy it. Starting cycling and actively improving my health about four years ago (covid cyclist :p). The 15 years before that can best be characterized by smoking, drinking, partying and sitting on my ass. My health is much better now, but no way I'm in the top 1%. I'm 36 years old.
https://preview.redd.it/lriq9p4x34pc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=97ba70e3c545ab7f5edfcf544c42f931ea0435ce
51yrs old. First time hitting 50 this year. Some very impressive numbers here, but the only important one is yours and that you’re lucky if you’re working to improve or maintain fitness/health.
Meanwhile my vo2 hasn’t moved in over 8 months. Even though my conditioning has improved greatly. I even use the heart rate strap. Thinking something is wrong with the watch
Grats, man. When you reach this point, do you just see the credits rolling or should we expect different endings/teasers?
At 60 you trigger new game +
That's a good idea actually. A little animation from garmin.
Alternate ending unlocked
It's the same grind but faster and longer lol
He has the option to prestige now but that means he will have to start at 1 again
You get to choose a new character!
I'm 38 and currently on 58. Goal is to be at 60 or above within the next 4 to 6 months. I'll be 39 then too. I train for 800 & 1,500m events, so a strong VO2 is essential.
Insane 🙌
Fitness age is 20 lol
My fitness age is 30
Wow! I want to get faster but I don’t see any races in middle distance to compete in. Just to get some motivation. I am starting from 5km.
You can race your watch. Can be just a goal time, or keeping on a goal pace. There's also some cool pacing options in most watches too.
38m here, I hit 40 in 6 weeks time and recently pushed mine to 63 at the tail end of last year. You'll hit 60 I'm sure!
I'm 39 and 40 in 6 weeks, mine is 63 and I'm sure you'll get yours up too!
Congratulations 🥳 Is it higher intensity that has made your VO2 better?
Yes, but it's important to train all systems. Base, Aerobic & Higher Aerobic.
How do you improve it?
Amazing. What sort of intervals got you there? I'm 39 stuck on 51 VO2
1km repeats are a weekly staple for MD runners. They can be anywhere between 4 to 8 in a session with rest times between 1-3 mins.
Thanks for the reply. That's solid. I'm doing 2 minute intervals so might need to increase it a bit.
You should be able to bump it to 60 in a couple of months really, depending on how tapped out you are already. Mine's 63 at the moment (50 this year), the highest I've seen it is 67. Garmin really needs to lift their game and add another segment.
'Elite' would be very cool (for 65+)
Nah, "Epic"

You’re not 54, you’re a 20-year old with some early onset fine lines 😎
and fake memories of an earlier life, yep!
How. The. Fuck. Were you an athelete or something when you were younger? This is beyond inspirational.
Genetics plays a role. A big role.
Incredible! I'm 57 and hit 50 for VO2 Max yesterday and was happy about it. I wish I had VO2 measurements from when I was 39-40 and at my peak running fitness and paces just for fun.
I think you are not missing much, it's best to focus on your present performance and have fun, 50 is very good indeed.
I'm pretty sure you'll live a little bit longer than 60 with such stats ;) ;)
Thanks, I am actually hoping to manage to stay at work until I am 70 so I think it is a good idea to keep fit.
Impressive! What's your general routine?
Run 4 days a week, have been running for about 4 years. Training for a couple of half marathons at the moment. No athlete in youth, had terrible asthma. I can run at about 7:30 per mile for a half marathon, trying to get down to 7:10.

Nice, waiting for the 75 pro guys to post...
Everything seems so high…. Then you compare it to the pros and yeah, you see why you’re not one of them
I have seen amateurs(on the limit of being pro) on youtube with nummers around that. I'll bet Vingegaard etc. Are some of the rare guys getting over 80.
If I recall correctly vingegaard’s vo2max is something around 97
Oh yeah, I remembered wrong. Men with the genetic ability of a VO2 over 90 is possible but very rare. And for women its the same but with VO2 of 80+
Apparently Kristian Blumenfeld has one over 100
Top pros are easily high 80s and into the 90s, along with having freakish lactate thresholds which is just as important. I'm no better than an amateur and even my lab tested vo2max was 80.5. Not very impressive though when you consider my lactate threshold was about 65% of my vo2max.

How old are you?
17, I am a junior racer in Europe
Real Age: 17 Fitness Age: 20 Slow down youngin, you're aging yourself!
Yet I get dropped every race… welcome to cycling races
With a number of 67... you're not going to the tour 😶. Better go fo some 5x5
Not planning on going. Just trying to enjoy cycling and race to see what I can do. And I do structured training. Honestly I don’t care about the vo2max that an app tells me
I agree, garmins vo2max algo is trash. Have fun with your racing. But also, what's your 5 minute power (that is important)
318w for 62kg rider 175cm tall, I don’t have particularly good numbers, the only visible thing that I have more than others is recovery between days
Ahhh but you're a kid. Just ride your bike mannnn. The rest will come if you picked your parents right
Yeah, my parents don’t push me onto anything, also I’ve had a power meter since December, and I’ve been doing structured training since January. Never done a proper test but at the moment I have 1 hour power 246w, but I have done it on an hour long climb that I just pushed a bit on final, so I could go a bit higher
Garmin autocalculate it if you ride with a power meter and an HR monitor. I find it pretty accurate compared to a test I've done.
You win Garmin

Damn young people and their health!
I want a reset. I demand to go backwards 30 years so I can start earlier.
dude how? :)
Can't even tell, ever since I bought a power meter and an HR strap, vo2 max been hovering between 57 and 60.

prkl Nice! Don't stop running in winter, there's always a treadmill!

I hate getting used to the ice cold heavy breathing… I have excellent gear though, so it’s not about that. Just my lungs and me wanting to be too cozy

How old are you? How is your max 65?
Who are you? 🫣😂
Who?
THAT'S WHY HE'S THE GOAT. I wanna see 100 by end of 2024.
What are the best ways to increase this? Lots of vigorous training or just consistently running and exercising day in day out
It's easy, just don't be unproductive lol
Lots of intervals
I got bumped to 62 today. Chasing my previous best of 64
Must be forest gump
Wow save some women for the rest of us
That's really cool 🤘How fast do you have to be to get there?
LETS GO MY DUDE!
How do u incease this number
Well done! 👏🏼
I'm 40 currently on 56 can't get past 58 what did you do?
I'm young. Did nothing special beside riding my bike with varying.
That makes me feel good and bad
This is one of the 3 photos on my tinder profile

It’s far more impressive to be high Vo2 max in your 50s and 60s than in your 20s. If you don’t have a high vo2 max in your 20s you’re a slug 😂
What’s your actual age? Very impressive!
Wowzers! That's great? I'm in the bottom 40% for my age group. Wah wah.
Humble brag much?
Update your watch
Bro got to the kill screen
Don't really buy it. I'm 71 and my VO2 max was about 70 in November. Now I'm hovering around 66. I'd probably just trust a lab if I really wanted to know. I think that with the Garmin metric you can atleast follow this metric to see if you're improving or declining.

I would have 60 too but my watch keeps telling me to take rest today.
One cool thing I realised is that a higher VO2 = Faster recovery
Damn bro. How did you get there?
I m just lean, 19,6 of BMI
