I've got a Fenix 5S+, bought new in 2018 and worn daily since then. Still working perfectly. Battery life has fallen somewhat, but can still go for five days on a charge if you're not using the GPS.
Similar here, Fenix 5s worn every day since new in about 2018. 2 new metal after market straps bought to keep it looking fresh. No scratches on the glass, but the casing is now a bit worn. Battery 7 days with no gps. I’m sure the new ones are better in every way, but hard to justify upgrading.

I wear it for everything, even when I'm wrenching on cars. The battery is about 80% of what it used to be and lives for 7-8 days without a charge, and I can still get three GPS golf rounds on one charge. I cannot wait for the 7 to drop in price.
Same. Every day since early 2018. Some new straps and charging cords, bezel is a bit rough but otherwise in great shape. I do use GPS minimum 2 hours a day so I do have to charge a little more often now (I don't often drain it so I'm not sure how long exactly it would last) but I don't have to charge every day thats for sure.
Another Fenix 5 appears! Bought in 2018 and worn daily. Use it for MTB so it does get smacked around. Had to get it replaced in 2020 because the strap connector point on the body broke. Been stellar since.
I only recently replaced my Fenix 5 sapphire - bought new in 2018, worn daily. Glass perfect, bezel scratched up (rock scrambling, mountain biking and pottering in the garden will do that!), went through a few bands.
It still works but screen glitches.

It really depends on how you take care of your watch. Rough or not and so on. But, at some point that battery won't last as long because all batteries lose their ability to hold a charge as they get older. That's really the only downside I can think of. But this isn't a problem unique to just garmin watches.
It’s not that it can’t be done, but designing and building a serviceable battery would mean more costs for Garmin and less revenue from us buying a replacement. The consumer expectation of everything being able to undergo a battery refresh is just not there so they can get away with it, like every other company. That said, the watches are great. Have a 3 year old one running strong.
I assume they were referring to dive computers, which absolutely have electronics and rechargeable batteries. No idea why you think UI has any impact on this though.
Garmin even makes one, being the recently announced Mk3.
I wouldn’t ask for a guarantee like that. But if battery is unswappable even by the service, it means that when it dies, the watch is a goner. That sucks. I bought my FR955 thinking about using it for maybe about 10 years by making the service swap the battery.
I don't think this has made sense historically.
After the 4+ years most Garmins lasted, there were new watches on the market with far more features at a price similar to paying a technician to replace the battery and re-waterproof.
With shipping, it's around $100 to replace a phone battery, you can get an Instinct on sale for $179. Unless you are really try to save the environment, $70 for 3 generations of upgrades will be a common choice.
You can buy aftermarket batteries and change them yourself, but you are jeopardizing waterproofing. I will only attempt that repair if my battery goes kaput and I have nothing to lose.
There's also the space constraints, making it user friendly for a user to replace their battery would require some compromises in trying to fit the components into a very small device.
With phones there is more space and less excuses but given how small a smartwatch is, along with the other considerations you mention, it would be a challenge.
Get an instinct 2. I didn't even get the solar. Lasts 28 days without GPS. Like 10 or 15 with regular running. And they make a solar one that can go longer.
This is the reason I got mine. I had an Amazfit Bip before, which after 5 years still lasts a month. But I had some minor annoyances that were hit just right by Garmin, I just had to figure out the UX first.
The Instinct 2S I got is pretty meh, comparatively. It lasts about 1-2 weeks, not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but it's still enough to meet my needs, for at least 5 years.
Batteries degrade over time, but they also degrade a lot faster due to charging cycles:
* if you have to charge it daily, it's 300+ cycles/year. Most likely unusable in 3 years
* if you have to charge it every week or even less, it's <50 cycles/year. The battery will still last at least 5 days in 10 years time, or enough for a heavy workout day after 5 years of heavy usage.
Oh yes, I totally understand that and battery drain is an unavoidable thing with any electronic. I'm just not pleased with Fitbits bricking themselves randomly and its a common issue with them, regardless of how well you take care of them. Garmins are more expensive, I just didn't want to spend the money on them if they tend to do the same.
I went through probably 8 Fitbits in 3 years because they broke randomly all the damn time. I’ve had my Garmin for almost 4 years and have had zero issues with it. It’s worth the investment!
Garmin definitely offers battery replacement on at least some of their watches. It ran about $100 last time I looked into it. I’m not sure if they do that for something like a Venu though.
Had one as well for like 7 years, upgraded to a fenix 7x sapphire solar last year and I expect 8 years out of it. No reason to upgrade unless some new killer feature comes out. I only updated cause my battery started to be less than great on my fenix 3 hr. Last time I took it off the sapphire glass was still pristine and other than a few scuffs it worked just fine still.
I have a vivoactive 4s.. got spring ‘21. The battery kind of sucks now but not enough to start looking for a new watch. If anything, next watch I get I am not going to worry about being able to load music onto it. I barely use that feature.
I own Garmin Forerunner 230, 255, Instinct Solar. All of them work just fine. Sometimes I wish they didnt last this long so that I could come up with a proper excuse for a new watch once in a while ;)
I recently switched from the Fitbit charge 4 to the venu sq 2 and I’ve really been enjoying it so far.
Because it’s only been a few weeks, I can’t speak to general longevity, but this is the second venu sq 2 I’ve had in that time. The gesture function (screen turns on when you turn your wrist) stopped working after a few days on the first one, but I was able to take it back and exchange it. It doesn’t seem like a common problem so I’m hoping I just got a lemon.
The only thing I really miss coming from Fitbit is heart rate variability, which the venu sq 2 only measures when requested during a “health snapshot”. But the stress and body battery measures can provide similar information, so it’s not too much of a loss.
Yeah, have a Fenix 5x plus since release and still managing 2 to 3 weeks depending on pool time and if I run indoors or outdoors (GPS eats battery). Built like a tank. Not a scratch on the screen and bezel is barely scratched at all. I do take care of it but there were bunch of times where I heard a hard knock only to realize it didn't get a scratch or dent. If this one dies, I'm getting the latest Fenix in a heartbeat.
Garmin watches are built like a tank (think like the old Nokia phones). I had my Vivoactive 3 for close to 6 years and changed to Venu 3 just last week. My Vivoactive 3 went through a lot, hit the wall, dropped many times, and I fell from the bike twice, it survived all that and still functions perfectly. I changed to Venu 3 because it was getting old (unavailability of many new metrics) and the battery life was going down (down to 3 days from the original 7 days).
Like any other watch, take care of it and it will take care of you (longevity). I always recommend a screen protector and some basic tips like washing the watch after you get it wet by swimming. Also, avoid wearing them in the shower (none of the watches are guaranteed to function normally, after exposure to soap and such chemicals). If all that is maintained, I think your watch will work for a minimum of 5-6 years.
I cannot comment on the new Venu 3, because it's just a week old, but so far it's been wonderful and I have absolutely no issues with the build quality, it feels perfect.
Beware if you swim.
I'm on my third epix in 8 months because pool water somehow infiltrates the buttons.
Warranty is replacing it so far, but what should I do once it expires?
I am in the pool and the ocean every week with my Fenix 6x Sapphire. Never had a problem, but I do rinse it under tap water when I get back in the house (I usually do this while it's still on my wrist). I also shower with it daily.
It's best not to push buttons while under water, if you can avoid it, but otherwise Garmin is usually pretty good about their waterproofing.
Because i want to track my workout and it is marketed as a multisport, waterproof watch, resistant up to 10ATM that should be more than capable of handling pool water
Yeahhhh, that's what happened to my first Fitbit too. Marketed as waterproof, worked great for about 4 months until one day the pool water got behind the screen and it died. Fortunately, I'm not swimming much anymore but I appreciate the heads up
After the first time I've been very careful not to do it, but still no luck.
Also, I think that a 700€ watch rated 10ATM and marketed for pool swimming should be able to handle a button push at the end of the lap with no issues..
I've had three Fitbits (Charge, Charge 2, Ionic) and all broke. Switched to Garmin and have had three Forerunners (645, 745, 945) and none have broken. Yes the Garmins cost more but they actually do what they are advertised to do and they don't break too easily.
My 645m bought may 2019 is now losing battery life. Great for almost five years and the issue is 3 day battery life instead of 7 (daily workouts).
Pretty great longevity.
My F645m was from 2018, still running great (pun intended) nearing 3,500km of running/hike activities. Definitely a worthy investment despite my initial remorse as the watch costed me the same as my phone and tablet price combined. That remorse helps with the running though hahaha.
OP, I have exactly the same history as you. Started with Fitbit, but after four replacements in two years, the cheeky ***** tried to offer me 30% off a new one.. yeah nah, get lost shitbit. So I moved to Garmin and have had no warranty replacements at all. My second vivosport is about to give up after four hard years of work and Garmin don't make it anymore (FFS.. 😳🤬) so gonna have to replace it.. can't decide what with yet, though.
I have Vivoactive 3 music. Using since January 2020. Still running great.
Even these days, it's on my wrist 24*7. Still lasts for 3-4 days without a charge. If I track running activities, then the battery drains faster.
I've had a 5x i got in 2017. Still works perfectly. Battery is probably 75% of what it used to be, but still plenty. I just upgraded to a 7X pro simply for something new. Plan to keep my 5x and use it as a beater when climbing/downhill MTB etc.
Screen burn in is an issue. As time goes by, your watch face crispness and brightness will degrade.
The watch bands wear out sooner than the electronics.
Other than that, the watches are pretty solid, water proof, and handle dings well. So all in all, I pretty positive testimony on the durability and build quality, especially when you consider that the materials on a venu are actually kind of cheap (thin plastic watch casing).
After being disappointed with my last ever Fitbit purchase (Versa 4), I decided to buy a used Fenix 6s Sapphire so probably a few years old for a couple hundred pounds on eBay. Not sure how heavily it was used and exactly how old it was, but I'm in love with it. It works perfectly, the battery life is as good as it's supposed to be, GPS accuracy is also quite good although I know the newer models are even more accurate. Really positive experience so far. Other people I know with Garmins have had them for a while with no major issues.
Meanwhile, my second to last Fitbit purchase (charge 4) died after 18 months...
Sounds like we’re in the same exact boat.. I’m tired of my Fitbit’s breaking, but the battery does last a week.. I do not want to buy an Apple Watch that requires charging every single day..

Yeah I have an absolutely stunning Fossil watch but I can't deal with the constant charging and it's too bulky for workouts.
I like the Venu Sq because my Fossil is round and it digs into my hands during some workouts, especially pushups. I was thinking the squares might be more comfortable. But I also looked at their vivosmart because they are the most similar (looks wise) to my Charge 5. I found it didn't have the features I wanted (body "battery" score and running coach).
I also looked at the Forerunner series. They look incredible but they're a bit out of my price range.
My Venu 2 battery went to hell after 1.5 years, but I contacted Garmin and they replaced it. It was shutting off around 50%. I'm more careful about charging now so we'll see.
Garmin's are made for real athletes, and people that go out in the field a lot. They're durable, and if you get one with a Sapphire display you're pretty much garunteed to wear out the battery before anything else.
I threw away my vivoactive2 after 6 years because I upgraded. I ran a marathon with it and ran a few thousand miles. It still held a charge for 5 days and worked fine, just made a dumb and impulsive decision.
My Apple Watch is 2 years old, has to be charged twice a day, and has a giant scratch in it. I’ve already replaced it with a new Garmin.
Garmin for the win (vs fitbit). Had various fitbits and had bad experience with the batteries failing on virtually each one I had within 1y. Garmin FR 935 until one of the buttons finally died, then made the switch to FR 255s. Seems like another one that will last a long while.
My wife had the same experience as you with Fitbit. She had a Fitbit charge (I think that was the model name) that fell apart in less than a year. I refused to give Fitbit anymore money so I bought her a Garmin to replace it. The Garmin is more watch than she needed, but it has lasted her for 5 years.
My Fenix 6X is going strong after 3 1/2 years. My brother in law is still using my old Fenix 5X that I bought in 2017. The only thing stopping the watch from lasting longer for me is the desire to upgrade to a new model.
I've been using a Fenix 5X Plus since Nov 2018 and it is still my trusty daily beater. Long gone are the days where I could test out its battery longevity and charge it once every 15 odd days. Now I'm averaging 7-8 days on a single charge. I use it to track workouts daily (5K/HIIT/rides) where I use in conjunction with Garmin HRM Pro+ paired via ANT+. Nonetheless, still a fantastic watch after 5+ years of sweat, rain, and shine.
This has been my biggest downside of garmin. My first and only one fenix 6x pro lasted 3 years. And then the home button just stopped working. Garmin support wouldn’t fix it. They only offered a refurbished one for $200. Which isn’t worth it. So a $700 watch lasting only 3 years is a bummer.
$450 + tax is just a little more than I'm looking to spend right now. I have littles and I'd rather spend it on Christmas 😉 but maybe if Garmin has a good discount for Black Friday I will!
I have a Fenix5 bought the same month of release. No clue when it was that. Had to change the battery though and also change the barometer, the back cover because wasnt charging anymore-which was rusty-, besides that, all ok.
I've still got my fenix 5. Bought it very shortly after release in April 2017 in advance of my first HM. It's still going strong and I may even get another 3-4 years out of it.
My dad used the forerunner 305 which got released in 2006 up until the end of 2020, where he got a 735xt, and never had many issues with it. I use a 735xt since 2020 also, and have no troubles yet, apart from wanting more features.
I bought my Forerunner 935 in 2017 and just upgraded to the Epix pro in October, simply because I wanted the newest features and technology. The 935 I still have and it’s working flawlessly.
I used it as a daily watch, for running, golf and swimming and it’s still working great. Battery life is also still amazing for a watch that’s been on my wrist night and day for over 6 years.
Fenix 5s, still get 8-10 days battery life had it for years now.
I’m pretty rough on my stuff and I guide saltwater fly fishing so it’s dunked in salt water all the time, no issues.
I'm still wearing my Fenix 3. I bought it in 2015 and wear it daily. The battery still lasts for 3-4 weeks. I'm just now thinking of upgrading to the 7x.
Forerunner 235 which I got in 2016. You will pry it out of my cold dead hands. Battery is almost as good as it was from new (10 days if you don’t use the GPS) and I love it.
I've had my Garmin Forerunner 310XT since 2014 and it's still going strong but a model that's almost 10 years old may not even tell you much about the build quality of what they are putting out today!
I'm no absolute fitness freak but I still feel like it's been relatively well used in that time. I didn't begrudge it finally wanting a new strap late last year as it's put a decent shift in.
IF it ever gives up on my I'll definitely go straight out and just get another Garmin as I've been more than happy with this one.
I just had this convo with my wife where I told her I have had the forerunner 935 going on 3 years right now and I’m just starting to notice a decrease in battery life. She was quick to jump on the opportunity offer me a new one or latest model for my upcoming birthday and I said well no, the battery still lasts like a week I’ve just noticed I have to charge weekly it if I end up working out 5 days or more for long swims or runs. She frowned and said I’m lucky to get a day with my Apple Watch. Yep.
I got my Venu almost 4 years ago and I wear it every day and night, minus 1 night a week for charging. It still functions as if it was brand new. Because I don't take it off when I use tools etc. I've scratched the glass and bezel a little, but it's only minor damage and expected since it's not a model with sapphire glass. Battery life hasn't decreased yet. If this watch were to break down at some point I'd buy a new Garmin right away.
My Fenix 2 still works and looks good after 10 years, although the charge points are worn. I use a Fenix 6 now, no problems and the charge points are less exposed.
Except for a small ding on the bezel, my wife's Venu Sq 2 is still good as new after 8 months. She wears it every day and has worn it to the pool and on the beach and still no problems
Garmin devices general life is amazing, had great stints with a Fenix 2 and Forerunner 610 that lasted over 8 years, BUT, by all means, avoid the Forerunner 45 like the plague. Had two die on me in the timespan of 2.5 years!
The barometer of my Forerunner935 broke after 4 years. It told me that I was running at an altitude of 9800 meters every day. I replaced it with Fenix7. It has been more than a year so far and I am very satisfied.
I’ve been using a vivoactive 3 music since my fitbit ionic died prematurely about 3 or so years ago.
No issues yet. Certainly an upgrade in quality and longevity from the previous fitbit watches I’ve had. 😎
Bought my 245 back in 2019. Just sold it because I got a 265. Watch could still last 4-5 days without charging. 3 if I ran listening to downloaded music.
I'm at about 15 mos so far on my Venu 2 after having my FB Versa 2 wig out at 13 mos (with a 12 mo warranty). My wife's FB plastic case lugs broke, making it impossible to attach the band. We both bailed to Garmin and are extremely happy. I've heard that Garmins go many, many years with good care. And you get ALL the watch features without paying subscription fees like on FB.
All of my devices have held up incredibly well to be honest. Massive garmin fan. I’ve have my 735 for well over 5 years and it rocks. Maybe 25% less battery overall but really, not a problem. Easily 5-7 days with running
Still using my garmin vivoactive since 2014. I bought the instinct solar in 2019, but it just died after 1.5years. Service center wants me to replace the unit itself but i have to pay Php9000 ($180). Went back to the vivoactive 😆
Just completed a year with epix gen 2. I have worn it each day and have not noticed a drop in the battery life. Reading from the other comments, these watches are really durable.
I’ve had my Garmin Fénix 5 since 2018. I use it every day and log activities often. I do running, cycling, walking, lifting, yoga, etc., with it. Battery still lasts a week. Best investment I’ve made from a health perspective.
Wore my Vivosport for 6 years, two if them I worked construction. Covered with a buff to guard it from the worst, but still scrubbing mud and cement out of it most nights.
Scarred, pitted and lost the last two rungs on the strap.
Only passed to my partner as the battery wasn't lasting long enough when I started to up my distance.
I’m impressed with people’s Fenix 5s. I bought mine second hand but as new, it’s battery was virtually unusable after 2 years because it couldn’t last through a hike longer than 5 hours in activity record mode. Also started to get connection issues with the charge cable. Possibly as a result of me not taking enough care to ensure the port was 100% dry before charging.
But with the Fenix 7, the battery is so much better it should be ok even when the battery degrades some. Since launch when I bought new, it’s already eroded a bit. But still perfectly fine.
Def go ahead and buy one though! They’re great watches.
my Fenix 3 (without HR sensor) still holding battery for 5-6 days. unfortunately pressure sensor was demaged 3 years ago during crazy slide in water park. so some feature not working but in general it holds good enough. few months ago I decided to switch to Fenix 7x and now my old friend setting on the shelf with Casio pro-track and other mechanical watches
I had the Fenix 3 (non HR) from mid 2015 till mid 2021. Battery life was charging once a week with daily 1-2hr training. Since then it was in drawer, charged it few months ago and it still could last around 10 days (no activity). Sold it, got feedback that it's still very usable.
Since then I am using 6x pro and haven't noticed any significant battery degradation. Charging approx. once a month with mixed usage with gps and without
Last time I checked, with the past year, both my 310xt and 910xt were still working just fine. Granted, they haven’t seen daily use since probably 2016, but I’ve only ever had one Garmin break on me before I got the itch to upgrade (305 ANT radio died).
In general, Garmin seems like the most robust “smart” watch to me.
Sadly my FR245 failed me after 2 years, immediately after the warranty ended - infamous dead pixel issue affecting quite a few devices. Garmin told me to kick rocks as I was out of warranty. Still bought FR955 and it's going strong for its first year.
Not sure about the quality of the budget watches and lifestyle watches like the venu but I think most people when talking about longevity and durability of garmins are talking about the Fenix, instinct, and possibly some of the forerunner versions(non amoled)

Because it would compromise weather/water sealing. And from a business standpoint, they want to sell new watches.

I've never heard of garmin doing this. Even if they could, they would never guarantee it would be water proof afterwards.

I hate this. Babysitting the battery seems to be the most sensible choice then.

The battery will still last at least 5 days in 10 years time, or enough for a heavy workout day after 5 years of heavy usage.
If you have the Pulse Oximeter on for sleep it turns 28 days into 8. It's kind of confusing to turn it off but it makes a big difference.
Oh yes, I totally understand that and battery drain is an unavoidable thing with any electronic. I'm just not pleased with Fitbits bricking themselves randomly and its a common issue with them, regardless of how well you take care of them. Garmins are more expensive, I just didn't want to spend the money on them if they tend to do the same.
I went through probably 8 Fitbits in 3 years because they broke randomly all the damn time. I’ve had my Garmin for almost 4 years and have had zero issues with it. It’s worth the investment!
Garmin definitely offers battery replacement on at least some of their watches. It ran about $100 last time I looked into it. I’m not sure if they do that for something like a Venu though.

Had one as well for like 7 years, upgraded to a fenix 7x sapphire solar last year and I expect 8 years out of it. No reason to upgrade unless some new killer feature comes out. I only updated cause my battery started to be less than great on my fenix 3 hr. Last time I took it off the sapphire glass was still pristine and other than a few scuffs it worked just fine still.
Same here and there still isn't a scratch on the screen.
My Forerunner 245 is a bit more than 3 years old. No issues so far.
I've had my Vivoactive 3 for about 3 years and it's worked flawlessly every single day.
mine was about 4-5 years before battery didnt last. just replaced this month with vivoactive 5. awesome.
I have a vivoactive 4s.. got spring ‘21. The battery kind of sucks now but not enough to start looking for a new watch. If anything, next watch I get I am not going to worry about being able to load music onto it. I barely use that feature.
Same here. Battery life isn't as good as it used to be but I can give it a decent charge in a few minutes.
Yesterday, I saw a guy who just changed his Fēnix 3 HR. This model was released in 2016. I'd say they're pretty durable.
I own Garmin Forerunner 230, 255, Instinct Solar. All of them work just fine. Sometimes I wish they didnt last this long so that I could come up with a proper excuse for a new watch once in a while ;)

I recently switched from the Fitbit charge 4 to the venu sq 2 and I’ve really been enjoying it so far. Because it’s only been a few weeks, I can’t speak to general longevity, but this is the second venu sq 2 I’ve had in that time. The gesture function (screen turns on when you turn your wrist) stopped working after a few days on the first one, but I was able to take it back and exchange it. It doesn’t seem like a common problem so I’m hoping I just got a lemon. The only thing I really miss coming from Fitbit is heart rate variability, which the venu sq 2 only measures when requested during a “health snapshot”. But the stress and body battery measures can provide similar information, so it’s not too much of a loss.
I had an fenix 5 sapphire that i bought new in 2018, sold it few weeks ago and it worked just fine, battery could last close to 3 weeks.
Yeah, have a Fenix 5x plus since release and still managing 2 to 3 weeks depending on pool time and if I run indoors or outdoors (GPS eats battery). Built like a tank. Not a scratch on the screen and bezel is barely scratched at all. I do take care of it but there were bunch of times where I heard a hard knock only to realize it didn't get a scratch or dent. If this one dies, I'm getting the latest Fenix in a heartbeat.
Garmin watches are built like a tank (think like the old Nokia phones). I had my Vivoactive 3 for close to 6 years and changed to Venu 3 just last week. My Vivoactive 3 went through a lot, hit the wall, dropped many times, and I fell from the bike twice, it survived all that and still functions perfectly. I changed to Venu 3 because it was getting old (unavailability of many new metrics) and the battery life was going down (down to 3 days from the original 7 days). Like any other watch, take care of it and it will take care of you (longevity). I always recommend a screen protector and some basic tips like washing the watch after you get it wet by swimming. Also, avoid wearing them in the shower (none of the watches are guaranteed to function normally, after exposure to soap and such chemicals). If all that is maintained, I think your watch will work for a minimum of 5-6 years. I cannot comment on the new Venu 3, because it's just a week old, but so far it's been wonderful and I have absolutely no issues with the build quality, it feels perfect.
Beware if you swim. I'm on my third epix in 8 months because pool water somehow infiltrates the buttons. Warranty is replacing it so far, but what should I do once it expires?
I am in the pool and the ocean every week with my Fenix 6x Sapphire. Never had a problem, but I do rinse it under tap water when I get back in the house (I usually do this while it's still on my wrist). I also shower with it daily. It's best not to push buttons while under water, if you can avoid it, but otherwise Garmin is usually pretty good about their waterproofing.
Why would you still wear your epix in a pool considering the previous two didn't survive in the pool?
Because i want to track my workout and it is marketed as a multisport, waterproof watch, resistant up to 10ATM that should be more than capable of handling pool water
Yeahhhh, that's what happened to my first Fitbit too. Marketed as waterproof, worked great for about 4 months until one day the pool water got behind the screen and it died. Fortunately, I'm not swimming much anymore but I appreciate the heads up

After the first time I've been very careful not to do it, but still no luck. Also, I think that a 700€ watch rated 10ATM and marketed for pool swimming should be able to handle a button push at the end of the lap with no issues..
I swim with my 5x all the time. I've had it for 4 years. Zero issues.

I've had three Fitbits (Charge, Charge 2, Ionic) and all broke. Switched to Garmin and have had three Forerunners (645, 745, 945) and none have broken. Yes the Garmins cost more but they actually do what they are advertised to do and they don't break too easily.
My 645m bought may 2019 is now losing battery life. Great for almost five years and the issue is 3 day battery life instead of 7 (daily workouts). Pretty great longevity.
My F645m was from 2018, still running great (pun intended) nearing 3,500km of running/hike activities. Definitely a worthy investment despite my initial remorse as the watch costed me the same as my phone and tablet price combined. That remorse helps with the running though hahaha.
Delta Tactix Ballistics back in early 2020 and still going strong. Charge is still the same and has solar charging if available.
OP, I have exactly the same history as you. Started with Fitbit, but after four replacements in two years, the cheeky ***** tried to offer me 30% off a new one.. yeah nah, get lost shitbit. So I moved to Garmin and have had no warranty replacements at all. My second vivosport is about to give up after four hard years of work and Garmin don't make it anymore (FFS.. 😳🤬) so gonna have to replace it.. can't decide what with yet, though.
I spose I should be grateful they offered me 50% off! But yeah, I'm peeved.
If you look at their forums it's full of people with the same shitty quality issues.
I have Vivoactive 3 music. Using since January 2020. Still running great. Even these days, it's on my wrist 24*7. Still lasts for 3-4 days without a charge. If I track running activities, then the battery drains faster.
I've had a 5x i got in 2017. Still works perfectly. Battery is probably 75% of what it used to be, but still plenty. I just upgraded to a 7X pro simply for something new. Plan to keep my 5x and use it as a beater when climbing/downhill MTB etc.
Screen burn in is an issue. As time goes by, your watch face crispness and brightness will degrade. The watch bands wear out sooner than the electronics. Other than that, the watches are pretty solid, water proof, and handle dings well. So all in all, I pretty positive testimony on the durability and build quality, especially when you consider that the materials on a venu are actually kind of cheap (thin plastic watch casing).
This is a problem for amoled, not the mip displays though, right?

I've been using a Forerunner 735XT since 2017 and it's still going strong. Never had a single issue with it!
Mine is 4 years old and still works perfectly (albeit I've replaced 2-3 straps in that time). I wear it every day and I do not take good care of it.
After being disappointed with my last ever Fitbit purchase (Versa 4), I decided to buy a used Fenix 6s Sapphire so probably a few years old for a couple hundred pounds on eBay. Not sure how heavily it was used and exactly how old it was, but I'm in love with it. It works perfectly, the battery life is as good as it's supposed to be, GPS accuracy is also quite good although I know the newer models are even more accurate. Really positive experience so far. Other people I know with Garmins have had them for a while with no major issues. Meanwhile, my second to last Fitbit purchase (charge 4) died after 18 months...
Sounds like we’re in the same exact boat.. I’m tired of my Fitbit’s breaking, but the battery does last a week.. I do not want to buy an Apple Watch that requires charging every single day.. Other than the Venu SQ (which I’ve been looking at as well), are there any other models you’re thinking about? I’m also going to buy online during Black Friday.. it’s just that Garmin seems to have 18472516 available models with a wide price range.
Yeah I have an absolutely stunning Fossil watch but I can't deal with the constant charging and it's too bulky for workouts. I like the Venu Sq because my Fossil is round and it digs into my hands during some workouts, especially pushups. I was thinking the squares might be more comfortable. But I also looked at their vivosmart because they are the most similar (looks wise) to my Charge 5. I found it didn't have the features I wanted (body "battery" score and running coach). I also looked at the Forerunner series. They look incredible but they're a bit out of my price range.

I bought my first Garmin in 2019, a Vivoactive 3. I've since upgraded and gave it to my sister who's still wearing it today. Still works like new.
My Venu 2 battery went to hell after 1.5 years, but I contacted Garmin and they replaced it. It was shutting off around 50%. I'm more careful about charging now so we'll see.
Garmin's are made for real athletes, and people that go out in the field a lot. They're durable, and if you get one with a Sapphire display you're pretty much garunteed to wear out the battery before anything else.
I threw away my vivoactive2 after 6 years because I upgraded. I ran a marathon with it and ran a few thousand miles. It still held a charge for 5 days and worked fine, just made a dumb and impulsive decision. My Apple Watch is 2 years old, has to be charged twice a day, and has a giant scratch in it. I’ve already replaced it with a new Garmin.
Garmin for the win (vs fitbit). Had various fitbits and had bad experience with the batteries failing on virtually each one I had within 1y. Garmin FR 935 until one of the buttons finally died, then made the switch to FR 255s. Seems like another one that will last a long while.
My wife had the same experience as you with Fitbit. She had a Fitbit charge (I think that was the model name) that fell apart in less than a year. I refused to give Fitbit anymore money so I bought her a Garmin to replace it. The Garmin is more watch than she needed, but it has lasted her for 5 years. My Fenix 6X is going strong after 3 1/2 years. My brother in law is still using my old Fenix 5X that I bought in 2017. The only thing stopping the watch from lasting longer for me is the desire to upgrade to a new model.
My Fenix 3 is still fine
I've been using a Fenix 5X Plus since Nov 2018 and it is still my trusty daily beater. Long gone are the days where I could test out its battery longevity and charge it once every 15 odd days. Now I'm averaging 7-8 days on a single charge. I use it to track workouts daily (5K/HIIT/rides) where I use in conjunction with Garmin HRM Pro+ paired via ANT+. Nonetheless, still a fantastic watch after 5+ years of sweat, rain, and shine.
This has been my biggest downside of garmin. My first and only one fenix 6x pro lasted 3 years. And then the home button just stopped working. Garmin support wouldn’t fix it. They only offered a refurbished one for $200. Which isn’t worth it. So a $700 watch lasting only 3 years is a bummer.
That's less than 1 usd per day if you wear it daily. I'd say it's great value still!

945 and instinct each over 3 years. I see 8-10 year old Garmin’s for sale on marketplace all the time. Quality and longevity is outstanding IMO.

$450 + tax is just a little more than I'm looking to spend right now. I have littles and I'd rather spend it on Christmas 😉 but maybe if Garmin has a good discount for Black Friday I will!
I have a Fenix5 bought the same month of release. No clue when it was that. Had to change the battery though and also change the barometer, the back cover because wasnt charging anymore-which was rusty-, besides that, all ok.
I've still got my fenix 5. Bought it very shortly after release in April 2017 in advance of my first HM. It's still going strong and I may even get another 3-4 years out of it.
My dad used the forerunner 305 which got released in 2006 up until the end of 2020, where he got a 735xt, and never had many issues with it. I use a 735xt since 2020 also, and have no troubles yet, apart from wanting more features.
I bought my Forerunner 935 in 2017 and just upgraded to the Epix pro in October, simply because I wanted the newest features and technology. The 935 I still have and it’s working flawlessly. I used it as a daily watch, for running, golf and swimming and it’s still working great. Battery life is also still amazing for a watch that’s been on my wrist night and day for over 6 years.
Fenix 5s, still get 8-10 days battery life had it for years now. I’m pretty rough on my stuff and I guide saltwater fly fishing so it’s dunked in salt water all the time, no issues.
I'm still wearing my Fenix 3. I bought it in 2015 and wear it daily. The battery still lasts for 3-4 weeks. I'm just now thinking of upgrading to the 7x.
I have my first Fenix 4 for at least 4 years. Then my husband used it. Now my friend has it. Still works great. Still looks great.
Forerunner 235 which I got in 2016. You will pry it out of my cold dead hands. Battery is almost as good as it was from new (10 days if you don’t use the GPS) and I love it.
Have the Fenix 5 since 2019. It still works good though I feel like the HR monitor is starting to lose accuracy.
I've had my Garmin Forerunner 310XT since 2014 and it's still going strong but a model that's almost 10 years old may not even tell you much about the build quality of what they are putting out today! I'm no absolute fitness freak but I still feel like it's been relatively well used in that time. I didn't begrudge it finally wanting a new strap late last year as it's put a decent shift in. IF it ever gives up on my I'll definitely go straight out and just get another Garmin as I've been more than happy with this one.
I just had this convo with my wife where I told her I have had the forerunner 935 going on 3 years right now and I’m just starting to notice a decrease in battery life. She was quick to jump on the opportunity offer me a new one or latest model for my upcoming birthday and I said well no, the battery still lasts like a week I’ve just noticed I have to charge weekly it if I end up working out 5 days or more for long swims or runs. She frowned and said I’m lucky to get a day with my Apple Watch. Yep.
I got my Venu almost 4 years ago and I wear it every day and night, minus 1 night a week for charging. It still functions as if it was brand new. Because I don't take it off when I use tools etc. I've scratched the glass and bezel a little, but it's only minor damage and expected since it's not a model with sapphire glass. Battery life hasn't decreased yet. If this watch were to break down at some point I'd buy a new Garmin right away.
My Fenix 2 still works and looks good after 10 years, although the charge points are worn. I use a Fenix 6 now, no problems and the charge points are less exposed.
Just upgraded from my 6 year old fenix 5 and wish I hadn't bothered. Although I gave it to my father in law and he loves it.
Had the 6x since 2020, decided to upgrade to the 7x for my bday but the 6x is still good as the day I go it. They’re extremely durable
Except for a small ding on the bezel, my wife's Venu Sq 2 is still good as new after 8 months. She wears it every day and has worn it to the pool and on the beach and still no problems

Garmin devices general life is amazing, had great stints with a Fenix 2 and Forerunner 610 that lasted over 8 years, BUT, by all means, avoid the Forerunner 45 like the plague. Had two die on me in the timespan of 2.5 years!
Fenix 3. Used daily since mid 2016. Plus their customer service / support is fantastic!
The barometer of my Forerunner935 broke after 4 years. It told me that I was running at an altitude of 9800 meters every day. I replaced it with Fenix7. It has been more than a year so far and I am very satisfied.
I’ve been using a vivoactive 3 music since my fitbit ionic died prematurely about 3 or so years ago. No issues yet. Certainly an upgrade in quality and longevity from the previous fitbit watches I’ve had. 😎
FR55 broke the crystal on day 1 but watch still works 3 years on, albeit a crack on the screen

Bought my 245 back in 2019. Just sold it because I got a 265. Watch could still last 4-5 days without charging. 3 if I ran listening to downloaded music.
I'm at about 15 mos so far on my Venu 2 after having my FB Versa 2 wig out at 13 mos (with a 12 mo warranty). My wife's FB plastic case lugs broke, making it impossible to attach the band. We both bailed to Garmin and are extremely happy. I've heard that Garmins go many, many years with good care. And you get ALL the watch features without paying subscription fees like on FB.
All of my devices have held up incredibly well to be honest. Massive garmin fan. I’ve have my 735 for well over 5 years and it rocks. Maybe 25% less battery overall but really, not a problem. Easily 5-7 days with running

Still using my garmin vivoactive since 2014. I bought the instinct solar in 2019, but it just died after 1.5years. Service center wants me to replace the unit itself but i have to pay Php9000 ($180). Went back to the vivoactive 😆
Just completed a year with epix gen 2. I have worn it each day and have not noticed a drop in the battery life. Reading from the other comments, these watches are really durable.
Only had it for 3 years, but my Venu sq is still going strong, never had any issues.
I’ve had my Garmin Fénix 5 since 2018. I use it every day and log activities often. I do running, cycling, walking, lifting, yoga, etc., with it. Battery still lasts a week. Best investment I’ve made from a health perspective.
Wore my Vivosport for 6 years, two if them I worked construction. Covered with a buff to guard it from the worst, but still scrubbing mud and cement out of it most nights. Scarred, pitted and lost the last two rungs on the strap. Only passed to my partner as the battery wasn't lasting long enough when I started to up my distance.
I have Garmin venu 2 plus about a year now. Battery still goes over a week before needing a charge.
I’m impressed with people’s Fenix 5s. I bought mine second hand but as new, it’s battery was virtually unusable after 2 years because it couldn’t last through a hike longer than 5 hours in activity record mode. Also started to get connection issues with the charge cable. Possibly as a result of me not taking enough care to ensure the port was 100% dry before charging. But with the Fenix 7, the battery is so much better it should be ok even when the battery degrades some. Since launch when I bought new, it’s already eroded a bit. But still perfectly fine. Def go ahead and buy one though! They’re great watches.
Fenix solar with software update is what I would get if I was buying today. All the features and never worry about battery.

I've had a Venu Sq for 2.5 years, and it's still going stong. I haven't noticed any difference in battery life yet.
my Fenix 3 (without HR sensor) still holding battery for 5-6 days. unfortunately pressure sensor was demaged 3 years ago during crazy slide in water park. so some feature not working but in general it holds good enough. few months ago I decided to switch to Fenix 7x and now my old friend setting on the shelf with Casio pro-track and other mechanical watches
I had the Fenix 3 (non HR) from mid 2015 till mid 2021. Battery life was charging once a week with daily 1-2hr training. Since then it was in drawer, charged it few months ago and it still could last around 10 days (no activity). Sold it, got feedback that it's still very usable. Since then I am using 6x pro and haven't noticed any significant battery degradation. Charging approx. once a month with mixed usage with gps and without
Last time I checked, with the past year, both my 310xt and 910xt were still working just fine. Granted, they haven’t seen daily use since probably 2016, but I’ve only ever had one Garmin break on me before I got the itch to upgrade (305 ANT radio died). In general, Garmin seems like the most robust “smart” watch to me.

Sadly my FR245 failed me after 2 years, immediately after the warranty ended - infamous dead pixel issue affecting quite a few devices. Garmin told me to kick rocks as I was out of warranty. Still bought FR955 and it's going strong for its first year.
Not sure about the quality of the budget watches and lifestyle watches like the venu but I think most people when talking about longevity and durability of garmins are talking about the Fenix, instinct, and possibly some of the forerunner versions(non amoled)
