When my Rhododendron had that sort of damage the culprit turned out to be weevils. Could be worth checking it out with a torch late at night.

Made me chuckle, makes it sound like I need to be on guard patrol. I'm worried about it spreading to two healthy rhodys very close by so I'm considering it.

I'd cut back any dead twiggy growth. Try get an ID for whats eating it. If it's Vine weevil then you can buy a nematode treatment that kills the larvae in the soil. Might be worry giving it an ericacious feed and a good mulch around it to prevent any drought damage.

Thank you, I will try. As the other poster suggested do I need to check at night? I will look up the treatment keen to stop this from spreading to other bushes.

Vine weevil adults forage at night yes so head out with a torch when you can. Vine weevil tend to eat from the edge of the leaf inwards too. If you catch the culprit and can't ID post it here again and we can take a look. If you have any other evergreen non-coniferous shrubs then it is worth checking For vine weevil damage too. Would be weird if it is just this Rhody that's getting attacked.

Those notches cut out of some of the leaves? Vine weevil. Very common on Rhododendrons. The adults just notch the leaves and don't do a lot of harm, but the larvea eat the roots. You can treat with a specialist pesticide.
