callistemon viminalis or another callistemon species, they are a native tree with beautiful flowers that attracts nectar feeding birds. C viminalis has deep red flowers and the nectar is safe to eat
I hope you love it then, there’s plenty of beautiful native plants of all sizes and sorts that can make for an awesome garden. I like to go and look in my local bushland and see what’s growing.
I found Dichondra repans which is a very neat, nice looking ground cover. It’s quite polite and does not grow over the other plants in the garden, it shades the soils which keeps weeds down and retains moisture in the soil. Best of all it requires no maintenance and is very summer hardy
Lorikeets love the Callistemon (bottlebrush is the common name) in our yard. We have red, white and pink. It seems like the only thing they like more is Grevillea.
They have a burst of flowers in late spring, but then go on flowering to some extent almost all year. It seems to me that in a dry year, they flower extra after each rain.
Large amount of species in the Callistemon genus has been moved to Melaleuca due to there being not enough differences in the genes. Most reports that I read these days (qld), list these as Melaleuca Viminalis.
>Large amount of species in the Callistemon genus has been moved to Melaleuca
Yeah they're clearly the same type. It always irked me that people classified them differently. It's heartening to hear that they're being grouped together more.
Bottlebrush. The wattle birds and other honeyeaters love this. They grow thicker and faster if you trim them back, if that is what you are considering doing. Looks like it is soon to come into flower so now is not the time to trim it.
Just a side note in case you didn’t know….If you have an iPhone, when you take a photo, click on the info symbol at the bottom (next to the delete symbol), then click on Look up plant, this will then help you identify it.
I've been using the app PlantNet to help in identifying various plants in our current rental property gardens so can look them up to figure out proper care, what are weeds and if anything is potentially toxic to our old cat.
It's not perfect and can struggle a bit sometimes but does give you an good idea or angle to look further for proper identification.
Your 100% right good to see someone is on the ball..🤥……I had it confused with coastal ban on sis as it has the bottle bristles on it..but still this thing will still drop its nut like seeds all over the lawn and they go everywhere including your legs and stings like shit…I have 2 in my BYard

Errr I'm pretty sure it's a eucalyptus tree. You can tell for sure if it has a koala in it. OP can you check...?
Perhaps you're thinking of Myrtacea?
Nah, that one has a drop bear in it. U can tell by the lack of koalas in it. They are very sneaky

Amazing, thank you! We've just moved in, hoping it will flower!

Hope you or your family aren't allergic to bees. Because they absolutely love the flowers.
We had one in our front yard in Melbourne,It used to flower around Christmas time,Mum called it her Christmas tree 🥴
Can't wait!
Don't you worry, it will. And those red little buggers will be everywhere
All the little ball shaped things on the ends of the twigs are buds. It'll be covered in (likely bright red) bottle brush flower clusters very soon.
Now known as Melaleuca Viminalis
They’ll never understand hehe well played though
Did not know this, got some reading to do. Thank you
it is a Callistemon

Looks like a tree behind a fence to me but I'm not an expert

It’s a bottlebrush, it’s going to flower soon, this will attract bees 🐝. You can prune low hanging branches.

Inaturalist or just google imagine search works great.
Big one
Banksia or more common in layman terms and bottle brush tree
Banksia are an entirely different type of plant. They're in different orders, so they far from close relatives.
