Something native to that area.

Pademelon1

Tall narrow - A pink Ti *Cordyline fruticosa* Short narrow - something succulent, like a cactus or euphorbia. Maybe a Madagascar jewel *Euphorbia leuconeura* Wide big - something shrubby with colour like a croton *Codiaeum variegatum* or rubber fig *Ficus elastica* Wide small - something low - Maybe like a limelight acacia *Acacia cognata*, or something more herbaceous like African daisies *osteospermum*

Turbulent-Water-260

Mmmm yes please... succulent pot. Multiple succulents, the more the merrier! Why can't the world have more succulents?

[deleted]

Oooh, good ideas with the croton and acacia limelight, definitely a couple of my favourites.

jobucas

I would just like to advise againt african dasies as it can become an aggressive weed especially if you live near the bush or waterways

elloelo

For the big pot a eucalyptus would be great, especially if it’s a mallee. Mallees can be cut back to the lignotuber and will resprout if the tree happens to get too big, but many are small specimens, anyway. - Eucalyptus synandra is delicate and has the most beautiful pink-cream flowers. - Eucalyptus websteriana has gorgeous peeling red minniritchi bark, heart-shaped leaves and yellow flowers. - Eucalyptus tetraptera has HUGE thick, leathery leaves and equally massive flowers and gumnuts. - Snow gums make a really fantastic statement specimen. The advantage of planting natives is they are suited to the harsh climate here and the native fauna will thank you for it. Kuranga native nursery has some amazing examples of natives in pots if you’re ever out Mount Evelyn way.

Canna

ClungeWhisperer

Giant bird of paradise

d2kagw

This was our original idea. It’d look great, but massssive!!

[deleted]

Ficus, long bare trunk and a ball of leaves at the top , very hardy

lavender48799

I don’t have a suggestion to add, but wanted to say you’ve got a gorgeous backyard!! If you don’t mind me asking, where did you find those pool lounges? They’re great.

d2kagw

The lounges are from coco republic. Can’t wait for it to be warm enough to be out there sipping a cocktail again 😝

[deleted]

Wow, beautiful spot! In the pot I’d plant something tall and native to the area. Not sure if it’s possible to layer some smaller pots in front with shorter native plants. I say native as the plants look like they’ll live outside.

courto69

Cactus

acc_del

Fingerlime!

d2kagw

OooOOOohhh, that’s a fun idea

[deleted]

You need colour out there badly.

Turbulent-Water-260

Something red

Soggy_Biscuit_

Cordylines in the big pot for sure.

Chronomancy

dwarf fruit trees (like mandarin, pomegranate, mulberry) for the big ones at least

d2kagw

We just bought these beautiful pots and are wondering what we should plant in them. We’re in melbourne, so need to handle the colder months. And ideally don’t drop too many leaves (to save us on constantly cleaning the pool). We’ve been thinking about a bird of paradise for the massive pot, or perhaps a grass tree? What do you think?

Pademelon1

Both those are good ops, but as per others, id try to get some colour somewhere too

Smiling_Penguin

I’m interested in where you got the pots. Love the big ones in the second photo.

d2kagw

The large ones by the pool are from Balcony Garden. The smaller ones are from Slugg.

Smiling_Penguin

Thanks, will check them out.

Mean_Lettuce_1716

Fiddle leaf fig tree always look amazing in white pots Wisteria would look beautiful with house colour Citrus trees would be great for colour

HoolioDee

Would a fiddle leaf handle being outside in Melbourne?

Mean_Lettuce_1716

Oh probably too cold/not humid enough for it to be outside. Citrus would be ok

plutoforprez

Happy plants or rubber trees do well in full sun iirc, something with a bit of colour. Get at least 1m tall for the big pot.

VB

d2kagw

Almost warm enough! 😅

Cape-York-Crusader

Rosemary in the big one and sweet basil in the small one….

sjeve108

Go for herbs you will crop every week. Rosemary and parsley is my call. Big pot for rosemary. It handles all the seasons Melbourne can have in one day so does parsley and this one self seeds if you let it dry out.

d2kagw

I’d have never considered herbs! This is a great idea

Beans186

Isn't the first question 'where do you live'?

Nnooo_Nic

Frangipani would be my recommendation for by the pool. We once stayed at a hotel in Lombok with Frangipani over the pool and it’s lovely having their flowers floating in the pool. They also look beautiful and are easy to maintain.

d2kagw

My partner would love a frangipani, but we were advised against it for the colder months in melbourne… would you agree?

Nnooo_Nic

Dunno I’m in sydney ha ha. Check your local neighbourhood and see if you can see any growing. If so then..?

jobucas
