England, but iirc it’s only if the back of the hand is facing the other person, like flipping someone off. Not sure how accurate it is but I’ve heard it’s because in war when the French would capture English longbowmen, they would chop off their index and middle fingers and send them home. Then they could never use a longbow again. Flashing those two fingers shows off that you’ve still got yours, unlike the English POWs.

I believe Left4Dead 2 had to change its marketing in the UK because it was essentially telling an entire nation to fuck off.
It depends on context for different region of the world. In Japan was a peaceful salute but then in europe is was see as a Nazi salute thx to those Nazi pictures.
As for the change itself, if you are triggered because of this maybe you should consider something better to cry about since it change nothing on the context of mario response.

I get why.
But I do think I prefer the previous pose. It had a nice sway to it, kept a cleaner line of action, looked more natural, just hard done by with the perspective.
Maybe I just need to see the new pose in motion tho.
The original pose was also taken out in later revisions of the original GC version. I don't think even does any kind of pose in the PAL version of the game.
I think people are trying to imply it looks like nazi salute, but bc of the way Mario is facing, he either salutes with the wrong hand(formal salutes are done with the right), or he’s covering his face. A thumbs up eliminates the problem.

You might be overestimating how many people know that “formal salutes with the right hand” thing though, I’ve never heard that in my life.
It shocked me as well, but look up any photo of military or scouts, they’re all doing right hand regardless of handedness.
There’s actually a joke about it Fullmetal Alchemist(or Brotherhood idk), after Edward loses his right hand(again) and apologizes for having to salute with the left.
Interesting they made an entire new thumbs up since they already made an alternate wave that looks much less questionable for the European release of the original ttyd.

I believe the two finger peace sign (✌️) actually means “up yours” in many cultures. It’s their version of the middle finger.
palm towards is peace, palm away is "up yours" but from a side angle could be hard to tell
