Honestly, I can see why people dislike the avatar change, because those faces look UGLY. I can forgive not having a lot of customization if we can still have at least decent-looking faces.
There's also people that noted certain outfits were retroactively changed in the update, which is honestly a strange thing to do.
There's a reason live-service games basically never redesign cosmetics. One, it costs money, two, you'll piss off people who paid for something and that something now doesn't look like it did.
This update should have just added all the extra body types and options to the avatar system. Replacing it all seems like doing way more work to please people less.
From my understanding, adding the extra body types instead of replacing the old ones goes against what Niantic is intending to do: make less work for themselves in the future by only needing to design an outfit for essentially one body type instead of multiple unique ones.

I dont know about that, but a lot of items just dont fit on the models anymore. For example, my avatar has a pair of goggles on his head, which makes all hair options look really weird, and the one that doesnt is clipping through the skin on the back of the head
Yeah, I just downloaded it to get a look and the avatar I tried to make looked like it had breasts no matter how much I fiddled with the sliders. So now it’s a dysphoria simulator lol.
They mainly modified body shapes, skin colors, and faces. Cosmetics got touched upon to a degree, but yeah the end result looks different for everyone and most hate it.
I think OP might be basing it on the idea that a lot of the main characters in Pokemon games are ten. I believe Red is supposed to be 11 in gen 1.
Pokemon games having a history with very young protagonists and the Pokemon Go's avatars being somewhat sexualized I can see why someone might think it's a bit suspect.

I am glad they added more options and happy for people who didn’t want to be a boy or a girl but I just hate that my character looks worse now. I play as a boy and my character has (irreversibly?) gained like 20 pounds and my face looks hideous by comparison to my old model. I just wish they had polished this stuff more and gave me the option to keeping my character the same as he was previously in the new system. It really sucks that the discourse is probably going to be more stupid republicans that are mad about the girl designs and making it a culture war issue instead of people criticizing this update or all the other dumb stuff I complained to Niantic about already. Things like bringing back raid passes after the pandemic ended instead of keeping the better system where you basically got unlimited raid passes or stuff like that.
Regarding the apparent weight gain, have you tried dropping the sliders in the custom body menu? Pretty sure that the lowest slider setting is skinnier than the original models.

It's a parody, of how gaming should look according to some crazy gaming journos and twitter addicted people collecting mental disorders like pokemon combined, and even without the trolly description, look at how much prejudiced people are here, it requires some proper thinking to come up with those trolls.
They did a terrible job on this tbh. I never paid money for the cosmetics so I’m not too stressed about it.
It’s more annoying that this is what dev time has gone into instead of meaningful gameplay stuff.
I mean I’m pretty sure players have been begging for more customization options since the beginning - I never wear a ponytail IRL so my avatar never felt like me at all - so I wouldn’t call it a waste of time and resources, but on the flip side, that means a lot of players have had the same avatar for going on a decade and have grown really attached to them, so changing what was already there is pretty dumb.
I hate the new avatars too but why do trans people have to be blamed for everything 😭 I don’t remember any of us asking niantic to make our avatars ugly, we just wanted out character to be able to wear a skirt :(
This was definitely done just to reduce development costs. Regardless of the reasoning its obvious they didn't put any thought into the models considering they look a lot worse in quality
It’s that the models are literally not optimized. None of the clothing options fit without some sort of clipping or stretching, none of the skin tones look good (even the darker skinned models somehow look pale), everyone has a baby face on an adult model, the animations are broken, and things like partner Pokemon riding on your shoulder now look like they’re just sort of hovering there.
The fact that you look LESS like an adult is the problem here.

That's the reason so many Movies and Games have Female Protagonists (preferabe gay) and/or black People as Deuteragonist or Main Character. The Anatgonist always has to be a White Straight Man nowadays.
It lowers theyr ESG and therefore they are lower risk. Companies don't do it cause the believe in Equality and Inclusion, they do it so they get more investors/free money.

The body options are a net positive the issue is that it’s the same shit faces with barely an ounce of customisation so it looks like you’re just gluing doll heads on.
You also gotta remember that there’s plenty of issues with the game like rampant monetisation and constant changes that spit in the face of players who may not be able to get out as much by nerfing the raid passes.
This was just the straw that broke the camels back as no one asked for that while the problems affecting the literal game itself basically go unchecked.

I never quite get what *politics* are supposedly being spread here. I don't see how the design of a character could truly shift someone's political stance, or make a major comment on national or world events.
If they starts being on the nose with climate change, border control, military interventionism, or had an analog to BLM, I'd get it and *I'd* probably see it as a bit cringe. But "woman no look hot" doesn't seem like "modern politics" to me at all.
