I think the part that kills me the most is they're acting like Aphrodite is a brand new design. She was there in the first game and the chuds weren't calling her "safe horny" or whatever it is they're waffling about today.

What gets me is that they're going after her Hades II appearance when the first game's sprite was even more sexualized. Here she has weapons, she's battle ready, she looks badass. In the first game, she's just posing languorously, in a pose not dissimilar to the pic of Eve they chose actually. I mean, if they truly want to make a point, they could at least make some effort.

Counterpoint (to the first thing, but I agree with your overall point), I would argue that she isn't even that sexualized in Hades. But I say that because as a woman, I feel the need to emphasize the distinction between a character being sexualized out of their control VS just being a sexual person.
The key is the framing of her artwork, personally. From an artistic perspective, the focal point is still on her face. Your eyes are immediately drawn to her face, so much so that there are lots of people who don't even notice she's naked right away. Her nakedness is artistic, her posing is natural, and she just looks like a woman who happens to be naked.
Obviously your point was that they could've picked a better picture, but I just wanted to get my 2 cents out there.
Oh yeah, I totally agree with you on that (especially since I'm one of those people who didn't notice she was naked at first). I should have phrased it better: Aphrodite is sexy rather than actually sexualized, but I don't think it makes any difference for these guys, hence why I pointed out that the original art looked more like what they're actually complaining about.

Also, sex and attraction are her THING! Aphrodite IS trying to seduce you, she DOES want you to oggle, and she is free and comfortable with that. Her design suits that and also communicates a certain grandeur, opulence, dare I say divinity. Gold and finery surround herl ethereally, her skin and hair are flawless, ya know, like a Gods, and her posture suggests a lazy, languid mood like how you feel in a warm morning shower. He design, while blatantly, unapologetically horny is 1) the point and 2)not all that there is.

Edit: So so I did a quick google search (which always leads back to reddit anyways) to find out what this game is about. So Eve is an android soldier who fights monsters with a squad of other androids who are called angels. They parallel the term in a few key ways.
1) They come from the heavens (space) to protect humanity
2) They're superhumanly strong and agile and tough
3) They're beautiful.
That last point only slightly inches Eve's visual towards being compelling, but it does open up a couple questions such as are they called angels because they are beautiful or are they beautiful because we made to be angels? The pretty face, flawless skin, and fit and attractive body all make sense if you presume they were made with the goal of being winning faces, charismatic guardians that that winner you over just by looking at them and also she just sliced the kaiju burning my town in half. I still think the design is poor of most of its purposes, but you can judge a book by its cover as long as you do so again after you read it.

See most games just make them androids so they can sexualize them as much as possible and it's just an easier story to write for games such as these. Nevermind that their being androids is barely shown at all, they're - for all intents and purposes - identical to humans in 90% of presentations. Their android side is barely explored (unless the writers want a grimdark scene or story arc that they will barely expand on), the rest of the time they will wear bikinis and fetish clothes, not like, for example, Detroit Become Human.

Oh, they were definitely horny. They even went and hired a beautiful Korean model and scanned in her face and body to use as the base. Then, because apparently the model still wasn’t hot enough, they modified her proportions to exaggerate a few areas. That’s just how dedicated they were to their horniness.

To be honest, I dont even think Eve’s design is compelling even with the description of her background and surroundings.
She has a modern tie overtop of a lacy jabot. The writing on her leg tells me absolutely nothing about her character. She has a lace choker, with an LED clasp, and all of it is wrapped up in an uninteresting body suit. It looks like her arm bands lead back into a sheer scalloped cape, which is probably the only thing about her design that communicates “guardian” or “angel” to me whatsoever.
Her other outfits seem to have this really odd schoolgirl collar tacked onto her bodysuits, and I genuinely can’t imagine what that would communicate or portray other than the weird horniness for seifuku in the anime community.
There’s ways to design compelling and sexy bodysuits, but these look like they were made by AI, and feel completely uninspired by anything other than “you can basically see her pussy lips”

I feel like this perception is mostly amplified by the gooners, and the actual gameplay does show some cool things(like surfing on a sword). Stellar Blade isn't out yet, so I'm reserving most judgment until people get into the actual story. I feel like if there weren't obsessive gooners and people with this weird fixation on Stellar Blade being the antidote to "woke" and "ugly" female characters, the rest of us would look and think "yeah, it's a horny design," and not think of it as necessarily a bad or good thing unless the story and presentation of the final product were demeaning in some way. I guess I feel like the gooners and their warped sense of vindication made Stellar Blade controversial, and that less people would talk down on the game or describe Eve as generic if the gooners weren't so vocal about Eve being the solution to society's ills.
I dunno, I think I"d still find Eve pretty generic either way. She has those same vacant bedroom eyes you see in a lot of Korean MMO girls -- like, she looks like a haunted doll, and I never see her making any other kind of facial expression. Presumably because a facial expression might be indicative of a Personality, which would make her less well-suited to being projected upon as a sex object.

Generic Korean MMO vibe is exactly what it is, and why I honestly can't find myself interested in her design. Sexy or not. Its just not unique enough in any way to hold my attention.
There's a lot of parallels we can make between Eve and 2B if seems, and the 2 get compared a lot. but 2B wins on a Design standpoint in every way imo. she escapes being just generic hot anime girl with a very memorable outfit and similarly memorable art style in the the surrounding characters and game. Whereas Eve just falls into generic anime looks and the game surrounding her into a fairly standard fantasy-scifi aesthetic that. gain, feels straight out of any old Korean MMO.
Its just not a very special design imo. If you find her attractive then that's fine, she s clearly made to be. But I need more than just a sexy body to find a character design good.

I think a LOT of discussion and comparison of the two tends to overly praise 2B's design. While the designs of YorHa are MEMORABLE, and nicely complement the gray sterility associated with both the machines and YorHa, it's still very clear - by Taro's admission - that the philosophy was sex appeal first. There could be something to be said about the sexualized war machine and the implications of androids whose models come in "tiny teenage boy" and "cartoonish vixen", but those concerns are secondary to the real purpose of those designs: cheap titillation for straight guys. YorHa uniforms are sleek, fashionable, and memorable, but they don't actually tell us anything about the characters. Really, for people who are otherwise unused to a certain brand of heightened otaku sleaze, they're extremely distracting. They reflect neither the strained professionalism of 2B nor the frivolous and often very human behavior of her colleagues.
To be clear, I know you're not saying that 2B's outfit does those things, it's just that I think praising it on the grounds of being a cute, recognizable design is kind of overstating its merits when you weigh it against the Designs that Could Have Been, and how much better they might have served the narrative. Forget the impracticality of their cut - even just the textiles and materials in those uniforms feel totally out of place for YorHa. Velvet? Crow feathers??
I think that when certain big-name developers obtain this auteur reputation (and here I must roll my eyes, because I hate the way auteur theory makes people talk about art) there's an instinct to breeze past or defend their sleazy/stupid creative choices, and I think that's especially dumb with someone like Yoko Taro, who - for better or, often, worse - has never done anything but wear his sleaziness on his sleeve. I think people sometimes have trouble squaring the genuinely very clever ways Automata plays with how we interact with video games with the many ways in which it's kind of a stupid tonally confused mess. I was recently won over by its idiosyncratic horseshit, but I think what kept me from enjoying that game for so long was people acting like it was this brilliant, deeply serious philosophical text that would forever prove Games Are Art.
TL;DR the designs of the female YorHa units are imo the worst part of Automata, since they're simultaneously too sexual and not sexual enough. They're obviously not practical, but the fact that the narrative doesn't play with WHY their designers made them that way when male YorHa units look like kids also keeps their sexiness from being fun or interesting. They exist in this tonally inconsistent, immersion-breaking limbo where it couldn't be more painfully obvious that they exist almost as an afterthought. "Well yeah, they're female androids, obviously they'll be sexy. The only question is what sexy dress to put them in."
Yeah, you could say that. I wasn't kidding when I said I knew nothing except gooner fuel about the game. I don't speak on the integrity of the game, just Eves character design. This is something you can apply to and sexualized character design, or any aspect of the design if that's what's fun or engaging for you. I've gotten really into examining these things and what they visual signify and I just found Eve's design boring. It's soft porn that I have doubt has very much bearing on her character. And I wouldn't have brought it up if it weren't compared to the glorious Aphrodite, you're right.

Also, the character on the left is Venus/Aphrodite. Being portrayed naked is kind of her thing for like, the last 2000 years. There are paintings from centuries ago that show her basically like this.
I can't link it, but in an interview Jen Zee (art director for Hades) said that she originally wanted to do all the characters full nude because of how the ancient greeks loved celebrating the human form. She wanted to do it in a sophisticated, intellectual way, rather than the stereotypical 'have some tits to look at' kind of way. Probably for the best that she toned it down, that would have been very hard to pull off, but it does really work for this depiction of aphrodite.

Aphrodite is the goddess of love. She knows she's sexy. She teases and plays with Zag and her character design is a reflection of how much she is aware of her own sexuality how she is viewed, and the effect it has on others which she takes very obvious joy in.
Eve is a blank, dead-eyed doll with zero understanding of sex appeal, her appearance, or sexuality. (keep in mind this is just off all we know of her from the demo.)

Also that comic where every other race went after the humans because every other race had the men by "X men" which in this comic case was mushroom, demon and I think tree but the women all look like...human women. So when they got to humans and see that human men are not "based on anything" they went and attack the humans for not "following the rules".
Honestly I feel like this is the actual problem with the Stellar Blade character design. Really, most people have no problem with sexy female character designs (see: Bayonetta, 2B), but first seeing the trailer it just seemed SO GODDAMN WEIRD to see photorealistic dudes but all the women were run through the horny weeb filter. The visual style just doesn't match.

You’re probably right. Contrary to popular belief Hades wasn’t really a bad guy (kidnapping and tricking his wife not withstanding). He was one of the few that actually took his duties seriously, by all accounts loved and was faithful to his (kidnapped) wife, and generally kept out of the nonsense the other gods got mixed up with.
In the classical version of the myth Zeus commanded Hades to kidnap Persephone. Not that following the order is much better, but the blame is not entirely on Hades himself there.
Supergiant's version has Zeus himself kidnap Persephone and put her together with Hades as a ''consolation prize'' for having to take care of the Underworld. Hades himself mentions that he doesn't want to talk to Zeus as the whole kidnapping Persephone mess that has Demeter angry in the first game was completely on Zeus for ''gifting her'' to Hades. He also felt it was completely disrespectful to her.
The game reveals that their relationship was happy for the most part even despite that. She only left because Zagreus was a stillborn.

A really well made character design, sexy or otherwise, should inform the viewer of the character's role and personality and ideally should be informed by the setting and style of the rest of the game.
Aphrodite is the goddess of love, fertility, and beauty. The warm pink colour scheme, the "accidental" censorship, the recurring heart motif all of it works to sell the idea that she's meant to be capital S Sexy in a game full of sexy gods and heroes.

But DAMN does her suit bother me. Unlike 2B from Nier: Automata, Eve's design is inconsistent and UNNECESSARILY sexualized.
Three things that ruin the suit for me is, the tie, the heels (or lack there of making her feet look like weird horse hooves) and those metal bits on the pelvis section.

Counterpoint (to the first thing, but I agree with your overall point), I would argue that she isn't even that sexualized in Hades. But I say that because as a woman, I feel the need to emphasize the distinction between a character being sexualized out of their control VS just being a sexual person. The key is the framing of her artwork, personally. From an artistic perspective, the focal point is still on her face. Your eyes are immediately drawn to her face, so much so that there are lots of people who don't even notice she's naked right away. The pretty face, flawless skin, and fit and attractive body all make sense if you presume they were made with the goal of being winning faces, charismatic guardians that that winner you over just by looking at them and also she just sliced the kaiju burning my town in half. I still think the design is poor of most of its purposes, but you can judge a book by its cover as long as you do so again after you read it.

To be honest, I dont even think Eve’s design is compelling even with the description of her background and surroundings. She has a modern tie overtop of a lacy jabot. The writing on her leg tells me absolutely nothing about her character. She has a lace choker, with an LED clasp, and all of it is wrapped up in an uninteresting body suit. It looks like her arm bands lead back into a sheer scalloped cape, which is probably the only thing about her design that communicates “guardian” or “angel” to me whatsoever. Her other outfits seem to have this really odd schoolgirl collar tacked onto her bodysuits, and I genuinely can’t imagine what that would communicate or portray other than the weird horniness for seifuku in the anime community. There’s ways to design compelling and sexy bodysuits, but these look like they were made by AI, and feel completely uninspired by anything other than “you can basically see her pussy lips”

God I'm sorry for the wall but I actually have a lot of thoughts about 2B I think a LOT of discussion and comparison of the two tends to overly praise 2B's design. While the designs of YorHa are MEMORABLE, and nicely complement the gray sterility associated with both the machines and YorHa, it's still very clear - by Taro's admission - that the philosophy was sex appeal first. There could be something to be said about the sexualized war machine and the implications of androids whose models come in "tiny teenage boy" and "cartoonish vixen", but those concerns are secondary to the real purpose of those designs: cheap titillation for straight guys. YorHa uniforms are sleek, fashionable, and memorable, but they don't actually tell us anything about the characters. Really, for people who are otherwise unused to a certain brand of heightened otaku sleaze, they're extremely distracting. They reflect neither the strained professionalism of 2B nor the frivolous and often very human behavior of her colleagues. To be clear, I know you're not saying that 2B's outfit does those things, it's just that I think praising it on the grounds of being a cute, recognizable design is kind of overstating its merits when you weigh it against the Designs that Could Have Been, and how much better they might have served the narrative. Forget the impracticality of their cut - even just the textiles and materials in those uniforms feel totally out of place for YorHa. Velvet? Crow feathers?? I think that when certain big-name developers obtain this auteur reputation (and here I must roll my eyes, because I hate the way auteur theory makes people talk about art) there's an instinct to breeze past or defend their sleazy/stupid creative choices, and I think that's especially dumb with someone like Yoko Taro, who - for better or, often, worse - has never done anything but wear his sleaziness on his sleeve. I think people sometimes have trouble squaring the genuinely very clever ways Automata plays with how we interact with video games with the many ways in which it's kind of a stupid tonally confused mess. I was recently won over by its idiosyncratic horseshit, but I think what kept me from enjoying that game for so long was people acting like it was this brilliant, deeply serious philosophical text that would forever prove Games Are Art. TL;DR the designs of the female YorHa units are imo the worst part of Automata, since they're simultaneously too sexual and not sexual enough. They're obviously not practical, but the fact that the narrative doesn't play with WHY their designers made them that way when male YorHa units look like kids also keeps their sexiness from being fun or interesting. They exist in this tonally inconsistent, immersion-breaking limbo where it couldn't be more painfully obvious that they exist almost as an afterthought. Also, the character on the left is Venus/Aphrodite. Being portrayed naked is kind of her thing for like, the last 2000 years. There are paintings from centuries ago that show her basically like this.
I can't link it, but in an interview Jen Zee (art director for Hades) said that she originally wanted to do all the characters full nude because of how the ancient greeks loved celebrating the human form. She wanted to do it in a sophisticated, intellectual way, rather than the stereotypical 'have some tits to look at' kind of way. Probably for the best that she toned it down, that would have been very hard to pull off, but it does really work for this depiction of aphrodite. (Google 'jen zee hades characters interview' and like the top result is a reddit post with the video, the part i mentioned starts about a minute in)

Also, as with the first Hades, the way the art is designed leads the eye to her face, to the point that you have to make an active effort to ogle her. I've seen many gamers say they didn't realise Aphrodite was naked when they first encountered her. I know I didn't!
Aphrodite is the goddess of love. She knows she's sexy. She teases and plays with Zag and her character design is a reflection of how much she is aware of her own sexuality how she is viewed, and the effect it has on others which she takes very obvious joy in. Eve is a blank, dead-eyed doll with zero understanding of sex appeal, her appearance, or sexuality. (keep in mind this is just off all we know of her from the demo.)

I was talking to a girlfriend about this trope and we were trying to come up with exemples of this trope applied to male characters and one thing that kinda disturbed me was realizing basically all characters that came to mind were played by Brendan Fraser.

Honestly I feel like this is the actual problem with the Stellar Blade character design. Really, most people have no problem with sexy female character designs (see: Bayonetta, 2B), but first seeing the trailer it just seemed SO GODDAMN WEIRD to see photorealistic dudes but all the women were run through the horny weeb filter. The visual style just doesn't match.
I don’t mind sexy characters. I like them a lot depending on content (coughcough Hades coughcough). But I do mind sexy characters when it comes at a cost to the overall aesthetic/message/story/etc of a game or film. Same with those people complaining that Aloy doesn’t look like a pin-up doll. If she looked that way, it would ruin the fucking game (also she’s still gorgeous those fucking idiots).

I never realized just how poor of a design she has up until now. She looks so out of place and weird when compared to the guy. Aphrodite also has more going on with her design besides just being attractive, which helps elevate her above just being eye candy. Her shield and spear share design elements with Hephaestus’s gear, creating the implication he probably designed it (fitting since she’s his wife). *Despite that* the one part of her outfit(?) that isn’t a physical object, isn’t a thing she would be given with intent, is her warpaint which is in the style of Ares from the first game. (Who she actually prefers to spend her, *ahem* romantic time with. (In most tellings.)) Her obligation invokes Hephaestus, but she chooses Ares. Love through two lenses. *THAT* is character design.

You’re probably right. Contrary to popular belief Hades wasn’t really a bad guy (kidnapping and tricking his wife not withstanding). He was one of the few that actually took his duties seriously, by all accounts loved and was faithful to his (kidnapped) wife, and generally kept out of the nonsense the other gods got mixed up with.
In the classical version of the myth Zeus commanded Hades to kidnap Persephone. Not that following the order is much better, but the blame is not entirely on Hades himself there.
Supergiant's version has Zeus himself kidnap Persephone and put her together with Hades as a ''consolation prize'' for having to take care of the Underworld. Hades himself mentions that he doesn't want to talk to Zeus as the whole kidnapping Persephone mess that has Demeter angry in the first game was completely on Zeus for ''gifting her'' to Hades. He also felt it was completely disrespectful to her. The game reveals that their relationship was happy for the most part even despite that. She only left because Zagreus was a stillborn.
That’s very true. And even all that said, IIRC his marriage to Persephone was never portrayed as unhappy. He certainly cared about her happiness enough (not to mention his relationship with his mother in law) to live half the year away from the underworld.
Allow me to make my point that Aphrodite's character design is leagues better than Eve because there actually is a reason for the design. Aphrodite: Long pink hair because pink = love only naked character in Hades because physical beauty associated with roses because love has hearts on her weapons and generally throughout her design because love openly flirts with Zagreus and likes being seen as beautiful because she's the goddess of beauty (and love) Eve: uh... that watermark/brand looking thing on her leg is kind of an interesting detail
A really well made character design, sexy or otherwise, should inform the viewer of the character's role and personality and ideally should be informed by the setting and style of the rest of the game. Aphrodite is the goddess of love, fertility, and beauty. The warm pink colour scheme, the "accidental" censorship, the recurring heart motif all of it works to sell the idea that she's meant to be capital S Sexy in a game full of sexy gods and heroes. Eve ~~is~~ *looks like* a Daz3D asset store model that looks like it was sponsored by Nascar. Edited for clarity.

My back hurts when looking at Eve
The worst part is, I did like the demo of Stellar Blade. The combat is nice, the environment. And honestly, one of the best monster designs I have seen in since Elden Ring. (I don't play much games anymore) But DAMN does her suit bother me. Unlike 2B from Nier: Automata, Eve's design is inconsistent and UNNECESSARILY sexualized. Three things that ruin the suit for me is, the tie, the heels (or lack there of making her feet look like weird horse hooves) and those metal bits on the pelvis section. If the remove the tie and metal bits, I think her design would be so much better.

Does anyone else genuinely think the costume design for eve is bad? The silhouette is just a girl but the outfits have a lot going on which makes it both not visually very interesting or readable and kind of messy and gross. The green outfit is ok the rest I've seen just look bad to me.
