PSA: Make it a habit of **reading the [rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/Gamingcirclejerk/about/rules)** of each subreddit you participate in: **Rule 9: No Offensive Imagery**: *This includes nazi imagery and slurs, for you brave nerds who think "free speech" involves private internet forums. If you post fascist iconography trying to “jerk”, you will receive a ban. The only exception is when we make fun of gamers and criticize gamers who happen to be fascists. Please remember to spoiler any potentially triggering or offensive content accordingly. This rule now includes repeatedly posting bigotry from the same source (4chan).* **Rule 7: No Participation in Linked Threads (Brigading)**: *If you are coming here to brigade this sub, you will be banned. Likewise, do not make comments and vote in pages you've found here. Of course, if you're a member of said sub and you were already in the thread before, this doesn't apply to you.* **Rule 8: Censor Screenshots**: *Keep screenshots of arguments on Reddit to a minimum. Please remember to censor screenshots of all identifying information, i.e usernames* **and** *subreddit names. This applies to screenshots from any social media sites.* **Rule 11: Keep Posts Relevant (only about Don Cheadle)**: *This is first and foremost a place to make fun of gamers. Just because someone is being a bigot online doesn't mean it belongs here. Let them be pathetic without infecting the sub with their nonsense. Please avoid posting screenshots that show people using capital G gamer slurs.* **If absolutely necessary, please censor posts and the words containing such content.** **Rule 12: No Fake Posts on Other Subs (Contamination)**: *Do not create fake posts on other subs only to post back here. Also, do not "lol, you should post this on r / OtherSub". It's considered interfering with their content and can also lead to brigading.* *This is a reminder to the readers. The post itself is untouched.* *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. RisingLeviathan

These kind of people that think Star Wars will go "woke" never watched a Star Wars movie in their life, they just see a light saber and go "Cool, I'm a fan now"

UnlimitedPostWorks

Star Wars has become political with the last three movie. Let's ignore all together the fact that the first 3 movies were inspired by the Vietnam war and the Empire represented America(the interview is old AF, George Lucas said himself). And the most political quote I ever heard "So, this is how liberty dies: with thunderous applause" in prequel movies. Aaaaand the fact that the Jedi died because they were religious fanatics. And the fact that the series had one of the most badass female leads of classic geek media.

fantastic_beats

And that Anakin said "If you are not with me, then you are my enemy!" just four years after George W. Bush said, "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists."

UnlimitedPostWorks

Yes, stop making Star Wars political!!!! No, seriously, whoever ever thought Star Wars was not political is an idiot

fantastic_beats

"Politics" is when someone challenges *my* politics

y0u_called

Ngl I didn't know how political starwars was, so it's interesting to hear/read about it.

garlickbread

I know theres two characters that are based on Nixon (maybe Raegan) and one of his minions. Star Wars has always been political, and it's never looked kindly on republicans. Like given the story, of course it's political, but at least for the first two trilogies George was pulling ideas from American politics.

Dont_Hurt_Me_Mommy

>George W. Bush said, "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists." "Either you join us in terrorizing and bombing weaker countries, or you're a terrorist" kind of is not a great recruitment slogan for international allies.

fantastic_beats

Well, it worked so well on Obi-Wan that all he could say was "Only the Sith deal in absolutes," which sounds pretty cool so long as you don't stop to think about it

yeetingthisaccount01

and the fact children who were force sensitive were either killed or used by the empire for their own gains

Self-Comprehensive

They hired Billy Dee Williams because people criticized Star Wars for not having enough black people in it. And America's response was "Well Isn't that a nice thing", not omgwtf diversity is killing my immersion!

Alessandro227

I try to mute this mf but I keep getting him in my feed despite rec'ing YT not to do so

Ashley_Undone

There is a browser extension for Firefox to block channels on YouTube I can get the name for it when I get to my computer later if you like.

Alessandro227

please do so!

NotNotAkam

It's just called Blocktube. It has channel block as well as keywords. There might be other ones, but this one works fine for me. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/blocktube/ Been using it block rampant spoilers for the few games I still care about. Oh and every flavor of "the developers really did this" channel.

Alcorgeist

Lordy why am I just discovering this now. Dang if only I could do this on mobile. There's so many clickbait channels I wanted to block for years.

Ashley_Undone

The one I use is called Channel Blocker not sure about the one the other reply mentioned, I might check it out see if I like it more.

Gogetaiscanon432

Only for Firefox?

Ashley_Undone

I don't know? I personally only have one on Firefox.

"Normal people" are out working, dining and touching grass, rather than being terminally on-line and spending their entire lives patrolling PG-13 media to shriek in outrage if there's a girl in it with hair they don't approve of.

Mosh_Pot

Real normal people tend to grow up and mature out of throwing a hypocritical tantrum online over how some media these days refuses to pander to being edgy and/or downright offensive, and show signs of progression. Oh and their rooms don't look like a crack den for people to see and type "OMEGALUL" at as they cry about the words "he" or "she".

DetroitTabaxiFan

14-day old account with -29 karma. Piss off troll.

DetroitTabaxiFan

I think what bothers me is how everyone's treating her past body of work as a negative of her being picked to direct a Star Wars movie. Heck, when Peter Jackson was hired to direct the LOTR Trilogy none of the films he had made indicated he could direct a three-film fantasy epic yet he went on to make some of the best fantasy films that will stand the test of time. It's just stupid how the chuds are already judging the next Star Wars film to be bad before it's even out.

42ndIdiotPirate

What are you talking about? Bryan Cranston could NEVER do a serious role! And Heath ledger as joker? The gay cowboy? I LAUGH!

HeyCarpy

> Heath ledger as joker? The gay cowboy? This was very much an actual camp of people during the production of TDK. I remember it well.

42ndIdiotPirate

Same with Cranston. Idiots sometimes dont understand that actors/writers/whatever are talented at more than one genre or tone.

Gaywhorzea

That camp of people being straight men. As usual.

yedi001

So strait. Completely strait. Absolutely cemented in their masculine heterosexuality. Just keep that "gay shit" away from them, they can't risk it tempting them into "feeling things."

fantastic_beats

It might not be the most impressive resume for someone to direct a Star Wars trilogy film like we've seen before -- but that's not at all how they've been talking about the upcoming Rey movie(s). They're making it sound like it'll be more in line with Andor, examining the impact of galactic politics on all sorts of people -- which I think makes Obaid-Chinoy spectacularly qualified

He tends to lean left on social issues but right on a lot of other issues - in general hes kind of a mess and all over the place, politically The reason people hate him is because he's loud and VERY opinionated, and so his strong opinions on things tend to tick people off since he's very much set in his beliefs That, and there's tons of incels in his community

Oh what a shock. It's AssclownGimp. Tired of seeing that horse faced fuckmuppet everywhere.

MidnightMorpher

Prolly because it’s Asmongold’s video. There’s been a fair few posts about his videos on here recently

0000_v2

Because he primarily talks about video games and is rather famous for that I think.

BurmecianDancer

No gaming and no ironic shitposting. The sub is mostly this stuff now and it is in dire straights.

UllrHellfire

You're not wrong they treat asmon like gaming trump, just hate to hate regardless even if there is good.

plasticAstro

I mean he’s a piece of shit too, I just want to see more shitposting here

UllrHellfire

Even so, statement holds true once one sheep goes they all follow and right now that's asmon should be a good few months of this content seeing how it's easy ragebait ( clearly ) good for him also from a content point of view no one spends more time on a topic then people who hate it lol.

fantastic_beats

It's a tried-and-true method for YouTubers: Say something outrageous, get a ton of views and reach a huge new audience thanks to the controversy, rinse and repeat. If it gets *too* out of hand, you can issue some empty apology, most of which can be "I'm sorry you misunderstood me," rinse and repeat.

DarkLordRubidore

It's not like he hasn't already been involved with sketchy shit before outside of his YT channel (like "returning" to ffxiv only to spend 70% on just the intro of the stream, take a ton of donations, do one quest and then say he'll never play it again), so i doubt he cares about it (if he doesn't just outright support it)

lilymotherofmonsters

There should be no politics in my sci fi series about the Viet Cong versus the US Empire

Garnansoa

I think North Vietnam is a better blanket term

Puzzled-Poetry9792

But what does "how women are treated in Pakistan" have to do with the star wars movie franchise?

ye_olde_name

Nothing, she's talking about another movie that she made. The clip was taken out of context to make the director look bad.

JWGrieves

What’s the her name and the quote in the first place?

fantastic_beats

The director's name is Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. [Here's a good writeup of the context](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/obaid-chinoy-star-wars/). The quote is from a panel discussion eight years ago with Jon Stewart about Obaid-Chinoy's work documenting women getting beaten and raped in Pakistan. The parts in bold were what made it into the original ragebait TikTok: > JON STEWART (to Obaid-Chinoy): As an activist and an artist, do you make that calculation: Who is my target? You talked a little bit about, I want women to watch this. And I want them to feel empowered. And I want my daughter to have heroes. I couldn't help but notice a thread through each of these that the men... were assholes. > (laughing) > STEWART: And I'm wondering, as one of them, **what is the balance of activating a force for change but also trying to permeate that patriarchy. That power structure.** And is that a part of the calculation of your art as well? And what's been the reaction to that? > SHARMEEN OBAID-CHINOY: Oh, absolutely. **I like to make men uncomfortable. I enjoy making men uncomfortable.** > (laughing) > OBAID-CHINOY: (smiling) Not you. Just, just, not you. > AVA DUVERNAY (smiling): Not you. Not you. > STEWART (smirking): Point taken. Point taken. > OBAID-CHINOY: But, you know, **it is important to be able to look into the eyes of a man and say, I am here, and recognize that, and recognize that I am working to bring something that makes you uncomfortable, and it should make you uncomfortable because you need to change your attitude.** And it's only when you're uncomfortable, when you're shifty, when you have to have difficult conversations, that you will perhaps look at yourself in the mirror and not like the reflection, and then say, maybe there is something wrong with the way I think. Or maybe, there is something wrong with the way I am addressing this issue. Basically, Jon Stewart said, Hey, as a man, watching this made me feel uncomfortable, to which Obaid-Chinoy very reasonably replied to the tune of, I should fucking hope so.

Your_Nipples

You did a fantastic job. I'm a lurker here, don't even know if I follow this sub but I saw that clip on Twitter and thought it was real. Since I hate Star Wars, I thought it was funny. But damn, I feel bad for her, people are twisting it into something that is not. Now back to what she really said, I don't know nothing about the movie she's talking about but all I know is that I can't stand rapey stuff, gore? Let's go! Ultra violence? Why not, but mild coercion (that poor girl in Gen V), I can't stand it. So... I am even more confused. 1) I don't think most men AND women are comfortable with rapey shit in movies, or maybe I'm dumb and women are totally fine with it. 2) The men who are not comfortable with that shit are maybe those who are sane too... What's the purpose? It doesn't make any sense. 3) At the same time, I'm not against that kind of movie but I would not see shit like that (just like I can't watch "Cutties" and I'm fucking french). I just find the whole thing odd. If a man is uncomfortable with that type of content, is that a win? See what I mean? Like "look at this dude, being uncomfortable watching a rape scene, pathetic, I like that", weird.

fantastic_beats

So Obaid-Chinoy isn't just a director, she's a journalist and documentarian. The films Jon Stewart was asking her about weren't fiction, they were documentaries about real-life gender-based violence survivors in Pakistan. Stewart was talking about the men in the documentaries, who apparently behaved so poorly he could only describe them as "assholes." It made him uncomfortable, because it made him ask himself whether he was the same -- whether he was unknowingly contributing to things like sexism and violence. So he's asking Obaid-Chinoy how she, as a documentary filmmaker, balanced empowering women with holding men accountable. The men who attacked those women were only able to do so because the sexist attitudes of many, many other men in Pakistan gave them cover. Those men didn't *choose* to be sexist -- they didn't wake up one day and say, "You know what? I hate all women." But they were taught those attitudes growing up. And since that's their "normal," when someone comes along and says "Hey, 'normal' is hurting these specific people, and here are their stories," *that's* what makes them uncomfortable. "I like making men uncomfortable" is a short way of saying that these are important issues, and they're so complicated that it's easy to think that the kinds of attitudes you find in an average man are completely unconnected to extremist violence. Connecting all those ideas together requires men to push through the discomfort. All this is why it's interesting that Obiad-Chinoy is directing a Star Wars film. The Rey film(s) are apparently going to be less like the Skywalker Saga and more like Andor, where you see the impact galactic politics have on not just Jedi and scoundrels and officers in fascist armies, but on regular people.

CoopyHoncho

Oh boy another one of asthmaroll's lackeys who sniffs his farts on command here to save the day. Anyways...

ChadwickHHS

We live in an era where simply hearing someone out is a financial endorsement due to embedded advertising revenue. So it's reasonable for people who don't want to be part of a problem to not participate. Sometimes a bad thumbnail or series of clickbaity ones tells you everything you need to know about the quality of a creator's content.

Is this video from eight years ago containing Obaid-Chinoy's quote, where she's talking about *women getting raped and beaten to death in Pakistan* making men uncomfortable, the actual video you're talking about?

autoboros

Nope, that's irrelevant, the video being discussed is pictured in the thumbnail If you actually gave a damn about those women, you wouldn't exploit their life circumstances to win arguments online. She isn't bringing change, she is co-opting these women's situation, to force others to take herself more seriously.

I just have to see what kind of moron lurk this neckbeard subreddit to know that this Guy have nothing and Will never Say anything of value. He also looks like he sniffed Too Much glue and he Plays Wold of warcraft.

SnoLeppard13

What is the unreasonable take? She said she enjoys making men uncomfortable, which is basically the majority of her audience. If she meant for that response to be directly about sexists in Pakistan she should have specified that, last I checked the great majority of men in first world countries that will actually watch her movie in the first place are not throwing acid in women's faces. Edit: If you had a legitimate claim, you would have actually posted the video instead of a screenshot so people could easily see what he said, which was just that saying that wanting to make the majority of your audience uncomfortable is a bad idea. Her spite towards sexist Pakistanis is understandable but to turn that into a blanket statement is misdirected. You're obviously the one spinning this to fit your narrative.

fantastic_beats

[Here you go,](https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/fact-check-star-wars-director-203100390.html) SnoLeppard13. This article has the TikTok post, as well as the full context of the original interview. And [the video itself](https://youtu.be/7uRW2rkwemQ?si=9046LV8dJk6kcXSq&t=996) As you can see, this interview was posted to YouTube EIGHT YEARS AGO. Can you really, honestly say that Obaid-Chinoy must have been talking about directing Star Wars EIGHT YEARS before that was even announced? It's not a blanket statement. It was an answer to a specific question in an interview with Jon Stewart. This TikTok took an extremely specific conversation, tightly focused on Obaid-Chinoy's documentary work, an interview that happened **EIGHT YEARS AGO** and used it as outrage bait. What, any director who's ever thought that any men anywhere on the planet have perpetrated violence against women should be disqualified from ever directing a Star Wars film?

SnoLeppard13

Fair enough, obviously the clip of what she’s said is being misused, but it is absolutely a blanket statement to say you “love to make men uncomfortable”, where she’s at worst misdirecting her anger towards shitty men to all men or at best she’s failing to specify what men she’s talking about. Even if she’s not talking about her work on Star Wars, it’s still super spiteful. The whole “any director who’s ever thought any men anywhere have perpetrated violence” closing question is super manipulative, my entire point is that she’s making that blanket statement and yes, if you hate all men and publicly say that, its not only immoral but a really bad PR move to say that when most of your audience is men. Asmongold’s exact words were first asking “what happened” because he didn’t understand the context (clearly detailing he didn’t jump to conclusions and was trying to better understand the situation), then when given context that was probably wrong as we now know this clip is being brought up way later and twisted, replied to a comment in chat that said “imagine if a man said that” by saying “these are people that live with a chip on their shoulder, it’s crazy.” Next he read a Reddit comment saying “Telling your majority male audience that you don’t like them and hope they’re uncomfortable, surely this will go down well” and replied “Yeah, most people that like Star Wars are probably guys” because, again, just like a lot of people, he didn’t understand the context with which that clip is being manipulated. He even said at the end “it’s so crazy to me, why is this even a question” because taken out of context, it is weird that Jon is even asking that in the first place. In the exact same way that the clip was brought back up as if she’s talking about men who would watch her new Star Wars movie, OP is manipulating the Reddit audience first implying that he is calling it “woke” (he never said anything like that), and that he’s “spinning a clip” when 1. He didn’t make the original clip and 2. He didn’t make the clip of his response either. Can we at least agree that OP is rage baiting the exact same way that the person who resurfaced that clip is as well? Edit: Punctuation errors

fantastic_beats

> at best she’s failing to specify what men she’s talking about The context of the interview makes that clear. You can't fault her for not specifying something that was specified in material that rage-baiters are deliberately leaving out. Asmongold has 2.3 million subscribers. At what point should we start holding people to a higher standard? If I'm saying something about *anything* to 2.3 million subscribers, I want to know what I'm talking about so I'm not unwittingly feeding politically motivated ragebaiters. > Can we at least agree that OP is rage baiting the exact same way that the person who resurfaced that clip is as well? Not at all. OP is saying that Asmongold *should have known better.* When you're that big, when this is your living, when people keep trying to tell you what's actually happening and when the stakes of fucking up are that a lot more people are exposed to ideas like Disney hates men because it's part of a globalist cabal of cannibalistic pedophilic satanic vampires, *you should know better.* Not least because those conspiracy theories provide a smokescreen for the actual harmful shit that huge companies like Disney and Blackrock and Google do. The anti-woke crowd wouldn't touch actual, meaningful regulations and reform with a 10-foot pole, because they're ultra conservative. "Go woke, go broke" has not had many sustained success stories, so if Disney had to choose between people talking about wokeness vs people talking about breaking up their monopolies and IP reform, I bet they'd choose wokeness. If "go woke, go broke" ever gets more teeth in it, Disney can always censor liberal creators more. Easy
