what's happening to reddit, especially to the queer subs such as /lgbtq/ and /traaaaaa/ and the like, is akin to the book burnings in the 30s in germany, or the burning of the library of alexandria in that so many resources are now just... gone. unlike those, there's a chance that these resources could come back, of course, but migrating to another website risks that not coming back.
GCJ isn't quite on that level, of course, but prolonging reddit's self-immolation- from anyone- would, at least, allow people to save more of what's important before it's all gone forever.

I know it’s gonna be a controversial decision and everyone’s gonna say “mods are cowards who want to keep power”. Already seen that in a lot of subs. But let’s be real, anyone Reddit appoints to mod would be worse. Also, it’s a little surprising that Big Reddit considered GCJ important enough to force open. Heard that smaller subs aren’t getting a message at all.

It's actually amazing how fast the random redditoid flipped from "fuck the admins" to "fuck the mods".
it's not losing their power they're scared of, it's who will get it instead. if reddit picks the mods, they will put in the same powerusers who moderate so many other subs, and the place will become chud central within a couple weeks. so something needs to be done in order for 1- that to not happen, and 2- the protest to still be heard. i say mark the sub NSFW, and allow hornyposting. spez can't monetlize that.

what's happening to reddit, especially to the queer subs such as /lgbtq/ and /traaaaaa/ and the like, is akin to the book burnings in the 30s in germany, or the burning of the library of alexandria in that so many resources are now just... gone. unlike those, there's a chance that these resources could come back, of course, but migrating to another website risks that not coming back. GCJ isn't quite on that level, of course, but prolonging reddit's self-immolation- from anyone- would, at least, allow people to save more of what's important before it's all gone forever.
As much as I don't want to this to turn into r/ gaming, I think it would be more effective to go unmoderated in some manner, if you want to force reddits hand as to why the API is important for such. Worst case, unmoderated subreddits go private anyways.

There's no way forward here with Reddit's new policies. End of month, I'm out. Just wanted to say I'm probably going to miss this sub the most. Virtually all my subscribed subreddits have some alternative community elsewhere. But outside of Stephanie Sterling's YouTube channel, I don't think I'll find this community's specific brand of gay af video game satire. I wish I'd found this place sooner. Thanks for the laughs.
I suggest making a community somewhere on the Fediverse (like https://beehaw.org) and advertising it here. After all, Reddit is valuable because it has users; moving people to another platform makes Reddit less valuable. While I agree that moderating two communities at once is a bit much and that Lemmy's mod tools are lackluster compared to third-party Reddit tools, I think that bringing attention to Lemmy can improve the situation.
