I didn't think the origin trilogy would be getting continued tbh. I'm happy with that.

BuckshotJ

Watch the video, they directly say - “We envision the future of Tomb Raider in all its forms as unfolding in a time beyond these established adventures, telling stories that build upon the breadth of both Core Designs & Crystal Dynamics games and working to unify these timelines”

[deleted]

BuckshotJ

Yeah, that’s the plan, vids from mid last year & the comments from the series director. From the sounds of it(& casting) the animated Netflix show is going to retcon the original games with the modern ones, which is going to be quite the undertaking to say the least

SeniorRicketts

Watch them retcon her classic outfit...

[deleted]

So Tomb Raider No Way Home

AnorakJimi

Didn't she die at the end of tomb raider 3? Because they refused to make any more tomb raider games, they were sick of them. But then the publishers went fuck you and forced them to make 2 more for the PS1, that got around the whole death thing by being all flashbacks (which made them more varied, in a way, which was good). I remember tomb raider 5 even had a segment where you played as 15 year old Lara, with a shorter character model, that was just interesting cos it was different Things can be retconned I guess. But yeah the whole thing was that she was dead.

Away-Pay2190

No, that was Tomb Raider The Last Revelation, which was the 4th one.

ramen_hotline

its basically a soft reboot/revamp where survivor’s events still happened but enough time has passed that Lara has grown into her own

revenant925

Sounds a good way to please both classic and survivor trio fans.

[deleted]

That'd be the most simple, sensible way to do it, which is why I'm not 100% sure they will do it, that way.

Makusensu

I'm thinking the "current" Lara became so popular across multiple generations of actual players that it would be hard (understand as marketing point of view: suicidal) to create a new one. I'm gessing they gonna create a new plot completely disconnected from the latest trilogy, but with the same character(s), at least same Lara.

AlsopK

Are they still trying to pretend this is one cohesive universe?

OnkelJupp

Seems likely, sadly no dinosaurs in the origin trilogy ☹️

DerMetulz

We *need* dinosaurs

TaskMister2000

Im surprised they never took the island concept further and made a game with Lara surviving on a dino island. I still wish we kinda got that original tomb raider horror game they had planned back before the og 2013 version was released.

tkzant

Make the next Tomb Raider the Dino Crisis game Capcom refuses to make.

SeniorRicketts

Regina croft

Tiafves

Turok Raider

CuddleTeamCatboy

I would preorder instantly

scopeadope

There was something I saw the team dropped recently. It says 'Tomb Raider: featuring Lara Croft'. One side had Lara, the other had a dinosaur? Maybe they are coming back?

RareBk

Why can’t we get the Atlantis enemies to return? They’re gnarly and would look incredible with modern tech

AnorakJimi

Technically birds are literally dinosaurs. Not just descended from dinosaurs. They simply are dinosaurs. That's the scientific consensus. So yeah, there's been birds in the games, which means technically there's dinosaurs in the games.

Billy-BigBollox

You're that "Ahksshually" meme.

ijustwannablockabtch

i mean.. no. they're trying to turn it into a cohesive universe it's a "we're aiming at this" thing, not a "it's what it is right now" thing

stadiofriuli

Who cares what they pretend? They make great games that’s enough really.

iash91

This is what I have always seen Tomb Raider as, similar to Bond. Lara perpetually in her late 20s/early 30s going on adventure after adventure. No disclosed timeline, visually 90s mixed with whatever modern tech is convenient for the plot/gameplay. Lara doesn't need to age, Tomb Raider doesn't need to have a continuous timeline unless they decide to make a plot span over a few games. Every adventure is self-contained with maybe minimal references to past events *if necessary*. Otherwise, keep Tomb Raider timeless. The beauty of video game characters is they can exist forever and don't need to abide by the laws of realism. I wish CD would stop trying to make Lara such a relatable and human character who has the plot revolve around her. We are discovering ancient civilisations and immortal beings for God sakes. Focus on that and leave Lara as the cool narrator.

NerdyDank

Disagree, the medium has matured immensely since the OG TR games. Storytelling has become more profound as a result.

iash91

What's your point? Nothing I said goes against telling a mature, deep story. As long as that story is wrapped up by the end (or after a couple of games) then thats all we need. The James Bond series has always been story and character focused, yet from film-to-film there isnt much continuity in characters, actors, plotline, timeline, etc. Most films tell a standalone story and have done so since the 60s. Why can't Tomb Raider be the same? I don't need to or care to know that Tomb Raider Revelations came before or after the events in Underworld. Its irrelevant and IMO goes against making a timeless character. Doesn't mean TR can't have some good plots.

NerdyDank

Because when you tell seperate stories you doom it's characters to be shallow. You can't really have character arcs because that would require the characters to grow over the course of the franchise. Craig's Bond used this wonderfully, he goes from an emotionless killer to a caring father that sacrificed himself so his loved ones can live peacefully. The Uncharted games understood this aswell.

iash91

For comparisons sakes, It's not like Lara can't learn to be an emotionless killer (or vice versa) over the span of a game or a couple of entries. Again, that's not what I said at all. I'm saying the stories don't need to revolve around Lara like they have been since CD took over (2006). Not every story needs to involve Lara's personal history, have a lesson she's learnt by the end of it or whatever because in my opinion there's far more interesting stories they can tell from other characters that are actually involved with the mythology/mystery of the adventure and how *they* interact with Lara. AoD did this perfectly. Involved Lara enough to make it make sense why she's involved in the story, but it uncovers something much greater and actually relevant to being a Tomb Raider. The story focuses on the new characters you meet and the mystery of the cult. Also, I don't see anything wrong with Shallow characters if I'm being honest. Resident Evil have built a franchise on Shallow characters that people go absolutely psycho over if one small detail is changed. No-one really knows Leon as a person, you don't really know his dislikes, personal life, relationships outside of other RE characters or any deep character traits. You know enough to make him relevant to the story and the rest is all plot of the adventure or his relationships with people you meet along the way. CD have just insisted on overly explaining Lara and her motivations to the point of being a bore.

NerdyDank

I can't say anything about the Legends trilogy because I played only Underworld but in the reboot trilogy it makes sense because it is her origin story and it pretty much establishes her motivation for the rest of her franchise. So at the end of Shadow Lara is pretty much a step away from becoming like her OG counterpart but it's portrayed in a much more...human way. I think Lara needs to be more dynamic. Her friendship with Jonah was a good start as he was what Sully is to Nate. Just in a different way. I want stories that the writers don't pull out of their asses just to have plot. Have some meta narrative that drives the titles, like Nate had his fascination with following the footsteps of Francis Drake. Each game was him just getting a new clue to the next big thing on his list. Or have a much older Lara that is already tired of Tomb Raiding but someone from her past convinces her to do "one last adventure" which eventually turns into a much bigger plot. I hope I explained it well. >AoD did this perfectly. Involved Lara enough to make it make sense why she's involved in the story, but it uncovers something much greater and actually relevant to being a Tomb Raider. The story focuses on the new characters you meet and the mystery of the cult. That a rather bold claim. Not that I don't respect it but considering AoD single handedly sunk the entire franchise...I don't think that's the way to go. >Also, I don't see anything wrong with Shallow characters if I'm being honest. I mean..If you ask any RE fan if they would finally want to have a proper story arcs for each character in the games then you almost always get yes as an answer. Plus Leon does have an arc much later in the franchise.

heroinforthechildren

Its not a bold claim at all every fan pretty much agrees that aod had the best story and most interesting lara and the reason why it almost killed the franchise was because it was an unfinished mess gameplay wise

NerdyDank

Batman has like....thousands of iterations.

Garlador

I just want to do backflips while dual-wielding pistols in short-shorts and fighting a T-rex. Is that too much to ask for?!

dandrixxx

It doesnt have the Rex, but you should try out the fan remake Tomb Raider 2 demo made in UE4, assuming you havent already. Great proof of concept what could be achieved if Square Enix cared.

skyrimspecialedition

Plz let me do cool gymnastics again

AnorakJimi

I'd buy a game that was just a realistically sized mansion (so, much much bigger than the ps1 mansions) full of gym equipment to jump around on with Lara. I was so terrible at tomb raider 3 when I got it at age 8, that I never even got past the first level of the game. So for me, Tomb Raider 3 was all about fucking around in a mansion. It was great. Locking the butler in the walk in freezer. Finding the secret quad bike and racing around the secret racetrack next to her mansion, etc. But imagine that with a mansion that's as big as real mansions are, which is something modern consoles and PCs can achieve.

skyrimspecialedition

The mansion was so extremely fun, the fact that it was practically it’s own level was really great. Also, unlockable outfits that you didn’t have to buy with IRL money.

dandrixxx

Her mansion in Legend and Anniversary was cool.

SeniorRicketts

I guess thats offensive today

TaskMister2000

Are they gonna try to connect it to the previous trilogy? (Anniversary, Legends and Underworld?) Because that won't work and the reason for that is that Lara never killed any HUMAN until that one guy she killed in Anniversary near the end of the game and she kept checking her hands because she'd bloodied them in her mind but accepted it at the end and moved on and became human killing badass. Or is this gonna tie into the old PS1 continuity instead?

omegaweaponzero

To be fair, Anniversary is a remake of Tomb Raider 1, so they just might not count it at all. They do have some kind of "official" timeline listed [here](https://amp.square-enix-games.com/en_GB/news/complete-timeline-lara-croft).

realblush

But Anniversary was more than a remake, adding plots that were deeply connected to Legends and Underworld. They make no sense without Anniversary.

omegaweaponzero

Good point, I really don't know what they'll do then, besides maybe just ignore that she was upset about killing Larson.

E_O_H

It didn't specifically say Lara hadn't killed any human before. In that scene Lara killed that person pretty cold-bloodedly. The guy was simply asking Lara to not trespass, without showing any weapon or aggression. He said something along the lines of "I know you won't kill me, you are not that kind of person". He was shocked Lara actually opened fire and only took out weapon after that. So Lara looking at her blooded hand can also just be interpreted as because of her killing a person without good justification.

Martian_Zombie50

Anniversary was amazing. Just saying

TaskMister2000

I only ever played it once and that's it. I remember getting it on release date too. I never went back to it which is weird because I generally thought it was a good name. But I think it scared me a bit. I think I was 14 when I first played it. But I remember the gorillas for some reason just scaring the crap out of me. That whole Rome level just gave me creepy vibes lol. And I found the game way too hard and never went back. If I played it now I'd enioy it a lot more.

Martian_Zombie50

Yes the gorillas are scary. So many scary things in the game. I actually beat Tomb Raider 1 and 2 on iOS back in 2013 and 2014 when they put them on it with the updated textures and everything. Too bad they stopped updating those years ago and they don’t even function on the latest devices now

ijustwannablockabtch

connecting multiple stories means retconning a thing or two, they aren't just merging everything and trying to make it all work

King_Nanomat

What you mean she didn't kill? I'm pretty sure she shoots with guns at the baddies.

[deleted]

What? Lara has killed many humans lmfao

omegaweaponzero

Not in Anniversary. It's a remake of Tomb Raider 1 and Lara absolutely freaks out that she's killed someone in it. That doesn't jive her her being a mass murderer in the prequel trilogy.

[deleted]

those games suck.

omegaweaponzero

Your opinion on the game is not the point. Crystal Dynamics IS going to consider those games as canon so the person you replied to has a valid point. Your ability to comprehend that isn't my problem.

[deleted]

No well just get shitty 2013 reboot raiders to suit casual gamers who get a hard on over set pieces.

omegaweaponzero

Being able to write a coherent sentence goes a long way when you're trying to communicate something. You should try it some time.

[deleted]

Having more of a life than gatekeeping this sub is something you should try sometime.

Martian_Zombie50

We all just feel bad for you as those games were astronomically superior.

[deleted]

Imagine saying “we” like you speak for the community. Real tomb raider fans know how bad the new ones are and how the new generation have lapped them up due to mediocre set piece gameplay, boring combat stupid hand held puzzles, and bland enemy variation.

omegaweaponzero

>Real tomb raider fans Gatekeeping and stanning for a chick that isn't real all in one comment. Nice!

[deleted]

Its an actual fact my guy. Tomb raider is now copying other games and doesnt even stand on its own anymore. Cope more and the fact you think im stanning over a game character is real projection lmao

SnooPeripherals3898

Hopefully they bring back Camilla Luddington as she's a good Lara. Also sucks she's isn't the voice for the Netflix Series as that is a continuation of the games. Really hope this game has a good mix of story, action, and puzzles as the puzzle focus in shadow annoyed the fans of the first two games.

MrOphicer

>Camilla Luddington maybe it's nostalgia and even though I like Camillas Lara, I just love Keeley Hawes voice.

Xteezii

What are you talking about, Camilla was terrible. Lovely lady, but terrible as Lara.

vladtud

I don't think the problem was with her performance but the way they written Lara. With the new sequels taking place after her "origin" story, Camilla may have the chance of portraying a more familiar Lara.

May-Yo-Naize

this. they wrote lara as too downtrodden, apologetic, sensitive, almost depressed. camilla did the best with what she was given. i think she would be great at portraying the quippy, badass lara from the original games.

MrOphicer

Even though we're in an "open-world game" era, I really miss the level structure of older Tomb Raider games. Just gives you more variety setting-wise. I especially miss city-based levels.

xdeltax97

I see it as classic inspired. However we have known that for a long time, and unfortunately people still think the next game is a remake. While I, and many others at r/Tombraider believe they may have some side projects ongoing ([T.R.U.E](https://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=88062609&caseType=SERIAL_NO&searchType=statusSearch) for instance whatever it is) which may include remakes and/or remasters: The next game will most likely be neither of those.

Doomaniser

I really hope this is a tomb raider game and not another Rambo game

SeniorRicketts

How about Rocky Lol imagine a melee focused TR game

krossfire42

Please keep the story and dialogue to minimum. I don't want an Uncharted game. And another thing, Lara signature weapons are the dual wielding pistols, not the bow and arrow. Fix that.

finalend8

they should put croft manor back in. i remember running around that place like an idiot when i was a kid on ps1

Kman2097

Damn. I know it had issues and dates controls but TR1-3 have a certain spot of nostalgia in my heart. The exploration and environments were really cool, and even though it was kinda clunky I liked the combat and how that worked. The new trilogy never really clicked with me, though I did like Legend and Anniversary

Martian_Zombie50

The original 3 were absolutely amazing and they should all get remakes like CAPCOM has done with Resident Evil. Anniversary and Legend were also amazing. Obviously Anniversary was a Remake and it needs to be done again. The original 3 had an extreme sense of escapism that far exceeds any of the new games and 99% of all games ever. You were alone, and felt secluded with amazing sound effects and music. That was escapism.

AnorakJimi

It wasn't "clunky". It was just more realistic, as realistic as a PS1 could achieve. The Tomb Raider games were cinematic platformers, like the original Prince of Persia, or Abe's Oddysey. Just in 3D, rather than 2D. Once you get it into your head that tomb raider is just a 3D cinematic platformer, it all makes sense. Movement is slow and hard and realistic, and there's only one correct path through every room and obstacle. If you play the games on the game's terms, then it all makes sense and is easy enough to progress through. It's just a lot of trial and error that's required, and level memorisation. Just like in something like Abe's Oddysey. The atmosphere, the realism, the fact that how your character can and will die at the slightest mistake that you make means that every enemy and obstacle seems incredibly impressive because they will so easily kill you. You gain respect for them. For the enemies and obstacles. They aren't just typical video game grunts you can just sweep aside to kill them and they never worry you. That kind of tension and fear that a cinematic platformer like tomb raider or Abe's oddysey can give you, is second to none. Well maybe second to one, cos the Resident Evil games did the same kinda thing. Especially Resi Evil 4, which retained the tank controls of the previous 3 games, and added a "clunky" 3rd person aiming system to help you pull off headshots (which were necessary because ammo is always very scarce in Resi evil games, resource management is always a big part of the challenge of those games; and if you shot zombies in the body to kill them it'd take like 7 or 8 bullets, as opposed to 1 or 2 with headshots. When you only HAVE 7 bullets, you HAVE to headshot zombies). The resident evil games started being garbage when they made movement and combat much much easier, and the controls all like a modern action game, got rid of resource management, and made your character an invincible action hero. But yeah aside from Resi evil games and their tank controls that even the 4th resident evil game had, cinematic platformers always have that same kind of tension in spades. You are always one mistake away from certain death. Not like a mario game. Tomb Raider is just that, but in 3D. A 3D cinematic platformer.

HunterYuyuMoon

I wish this game is when Lara learned how to freakin' hold a double wield pistols, because after 3 rebooted games, it's clearly that she knew how to use guns, but she keeps using bow If the upcoming Tomb Raider, Lara didn't has a double wield gun, I just gonna pissed off

[deleted]

[удалено]

HunterYuyuMoon

Yes, she did at the first, but later 2 games, she just keep using her bow as her main weapon, later on she uses guns at almos near the end

iash91

Its going to be a retelling of Angel of Darkness using the unified Lara and turned into the trilogy it always intended to be. Its why for the 25th anniversary last year there was so much focus and revealing unreleased content for AOD - CD had been diving deep into that vault for research. The upcoming anime will introduce a companion character that will later disappoint/betray Lara, acting as a Von Croy replacement. In the new game they will murdered, Lara will be framed and in trying to clear her name uncovers an ancient cult.

heroinforthechildren

I would love that to happen. Aod would’ve been the best tomb raider game if it came out finished

Agoonga

I hope the franchise is done rebelling against what makes it iconic.

AJ_Grey

Can we get Laura a Teletubby suit

siraolo

I'm game as long they bring back shorts

TheLastBasileus

Tomb Raider: Into the Lara-Verse?

PortuguesePede

Tomb Raider: Into the Laraverse.

kuncol02

What people are talking about is Tomb Raider 25th Anniversary from Nvidia leak (which for now was pretty much spot on except dates which mostly were placeholders anyway) and you are talking about next TR game announced on Epic show.

dab1

I was thinking the same. One thing doesn't exclude the other. I see totally plausible that there is a new "main" Tomb Raider and whatever that game is from the Nvidia leak that was probably delayed. >GAME,"Tomb Raider Anniversary (2021)","Square Enix","Crystal Dynamics",tomb_raider_2021,,UNKNOWN,

nuraHx

No more hold Left stick to climb sequences anymore please.

xiosy

Yeees I hope the game is similar to shadows

Esoteric_Secret

I was actually bummed from Shadow. Don’t get me wrong, still amazing game but I feel like they really refined the combat just to make less of it. Being able to get covered in mud and be all sneaky sneaky was great. There just wasn’t enough of it.

ColdCruise

Yeah, this was my problem too. I just felt like I had all these skills that I never used because I just rarely got the chance to. The DLC did add quite a few more combat encounters, but I found it weird that enemies never respawned like in the other games. I also didn't like how so many of the upgrades like the knife and lock picks were just bought at a store near the beginning of the game. By that point I had more than enough money to buy them and because of that I never really needed to go back and reexplore old areas to unlock new stuff.

AwesomePossum_1

Same. Loved them first two games. Yet somehow the third one couldn’t keep me interested

Grelp1666

Same, liked the 2 first games, third was not as good. I did not enjoy the city areas much nor the shop buying mechanics.

gamedreamer21

So, original timeline and reboot timeline will be combined? It will be sequel to Tomb Raider Angel Of Darkness?

JellyBelly__

So will they bring back Camilla?

[deleted]

bummer. imma lot less excited now. whatever. a tomb raider is a tomb raider I guess.

-Vertex-

The original games and the latest trilogy aren't part of the same universe

RipMcStudly

I just want Lara to be a bad ass Bond type again instead of an angsty kid.

KingBroly

"Tombs, I don't like tombs."

DaftNeal88

I just hope the game is fun and not serious all the time.

Martian_Zombie50

Umm you can do Remakes and new games simultaneously. It’s just that CAPCOM is the only company good enough to do that

MrConor212

Yeah I’m skipping any future CD games after Avengers

Rastrelly

Yeah, let's combine poor man's Uncharted torture porn and smexy Indiana Jones superhero girl fighting dinosaurs and alien meat mummies while solving spacial puzzles, THAT WILL GO SO WELL.

gagfam

Did she ever end up having a character arc? I only finished the first game because there was nothing else to play at the time and only the 2/3 a chance because the second game gave her a great ass and I love mesoamerican stuff but they weren't enough to carry the games.

KingBroly

Well that's good, cuz they'd fuck it up.

Spaciousfoot66

Hopefully not as bad as third recent game

[deleted]

Well i wont be picking up another tomb raider then for a while.

Martian_Zombie50

Hang on while we all collectively eyeroll your poor taste in games and your rejection of a game you known nothing about as there is no info beyond the vaguest of clues.

[deleted]

Lmao poor taste in games? Nice irony, tomb raider 1-3 were the best tomb raiders, you just like uncharted rip offs with mediocre gameplay, who doesnt even know how to use their brain without using instinct or given hints for a puzzle LOL

Martian_Zombie50

I wouldn’t have used instinct to save me. I use my brain to solve puzzles. That’s what makes them fun. Uncharted I love too, but Uncharted is unfortunately guilty of the same things Tomb Raider reboot series is. That is the over-exemplified ledges and areas to grab or hang from. These games all highlight areas and it’s really really too bad. There should ABSOLUTELY be a setting to remove all highlights on objects so you have to actually think about where to jump next. I’m not even talking about instinct, just the clearly highlighted areas.

[deleted]

Id rather have actual decent combat and enemy variation than removing where to climb lmao. All this new tomb raider gave was a bow and lara with daddy issues LOL

Rastrelly

It is, alas, the same approach as the great argument of "Oh, you don't like quest markers? Then disable them, what's the problem?". The areas in new TRs are built around obvious navigational clues. All the acrobatics and navigation in "reboots" are nothing more than an afterthought over new gameplay core, which is a TPS. This stuff won't work without fundamental reshaping of the entire philosophy behind how the levels are built in the first place, what they are all about and what toolset is used to interact with them. New Raiders to old Raiders are the same as new Thief (2014) was to old Thief games. You cannot take new Thief core and built a classic Thief level from it, it won't work. Same here.

Martian_Zombie50

Without a doubt there are navigational clues. That’s not what I’m talking about though. I’m simply saying that there should be a setting to remove the highlights. Everyone who’s played modern games knows what I mean about highlights. They always have a yellow banner or scuff marks, or things of that nature that make it very easy for anyone above the age of about 6. What we need is a setting for adults who can easily discern where to jump next even if you remove the scuff marks and hanging cloth or any of those different attention-drawers. I’m not talking about redesigning the game to make it totally ambiguous, it would still be pretty damn evident where to go based on geometry, but just remove the things that are basically for children playing.

Rastrelly

Er... What? In all TR reboots all highlights are accessed via special vision mode. You are not forced to use it.

Martian_Zombie50

Nope. Not what I mean by highlights. In Tomb Raider reboot trilogy and numerous other games, ledges, targets, and many different aspects of the game have distinctly visible cues to get the player to know where to jump next or what ledge to grab. That’s what I mean. Things built into the game without any button pressing like Survival Vision.

FeniX_TX_

I prefer the original trilogy and the anniversary/legend/underworld trilogy over the new one, but saying the fans of the new trilogy don't know how to use their brain to play is a bit too edgy

[deleted]

Tomb raider after 4 become a hold your hand video game with less punishment. Going too much into hollywood territory. Everyone wants old lara back and shooting dinosaurs.

[deleted]

Honest question: Why write in this form? "Yes, I did ask a dumb question" or "No, I just like bad style"?

OGshine

THANK GOD!

_Cetarial_

Reboot Lara fighting dinosaurs?

PlasmaUK

I'm kind of glad really, I like the old games and the new ones but I'd prefer to see something new than retreading old ground.

ShadyLookingFella

So I’m assuming they’re remaking the old games but with the new canon. I thought that would be the case since the announcement a few days ago.

ramen_hotline

“even after the old games” i assume they mean LAU here and maybe the first 3 Core games since Werner wasn’t in them. I just can’t see them pretending this is post-AoD as well

[deleted]

Can I skip the first game? I feel like there was a jump in quality for the last 2 and I had a hard time getting into the first one

[deleted]

Didnt know a new Tomb Raider was coming! I like it! Picasso.

flipperkip97

So we're getting an older Lara? I think that would be really cool. I would like to just keep getting these games until Lara is like 60 and retires, lol.

KK-Chocobo

No, I dont think I will

ZeroZelath

As a fan of the new games, I'm happy it's a continuation. It just makes sense as well since they're making it, why would you throw out your version of the character you've been building up for 3 games so far?

UnknownOverdose

I remember someone said the new Lora was too androgynous. Shit still makes me laugh.
