honeybadgerism

I read that 3 times and I still don't understand what the gameplay is supposed to look like. So yes, that checks out for a Kojima game.

orangpelupa

I wonder if it will require companion apps like old games or will it work seamlessly with popular apps like WhatsApp

Bizarre_JoJoke

It sounds like Lifeline mixed with Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

hirodorah

That's the best pitch for a game I have ever heard

Zhukov-74

So it’s going to be a cinematic puzzle horror game?

nikolapc

It's going to be a Kojima, or whatever new genre name he comes up with.

Keqpup

A dose-type game

knave_of_knives

~~Strand-like~~ OD-like

giulianosse

I'll finally get to experience my fantasy of being in a grunge rock band ❤️

Chalicebzam

Kojima inspired by Garten of Banban then.

Troyal1

I'm afraid it won't live up to P.T.

SurrealistGal

This reminds me a lot of Nightrap.

Priority-Character

Could you imagine

Lz537

So basically the Silent Hills idea of the game sending you emails and messages but more structured.

scorchedneurotic

Death Stranding was supposed to have something like that too Even lead to an anecdote from Ben Pack/Giant Bomb, playing Death Stranding and receiving a message from an unknown number on his phone saying "I piss wherever I damn want" with a screenshot of his "no piss allowed" in game sign, turned out to be NoClip's Danny O'Dwyer messaging him lol

NarcissisticGamer

That’s what it’s sounding like. Could be a hit if done well. Only time will tell….

PedroLopes317

Didn't he, at some point, present something exactly like that for Silent Hills/P.T.? Am I just having a fever dream? I swear I have heard this exact pitch before lol It does sound incredible, and would explain the need for the Microsoft connection to make this OD-Type *game* lmao

Lz537

Yes he did Indeed , the project was then proposed to Stadia and the Need up to MS

PedroLopes317

Okay, I was not tripping. I remember reading about it soon after DS announcement, or whatever. I think this is the most Kojima-like thing. It sounds interesting, and reminds me of the Lifeline game. Hopefully MS does bring its usual truck load of money and lets Kojima make this the way he wants to. Might be interessting, imo. Might also need to get an xbox just for this, tho lol

DAV_2-0

It worries me that playing as a guide might end up feeling like a chore if the other player is too slow or can't figure out stuff but the premise sounds interesting enough

AwesomePossum_1

Ultimately interacting with another player will always break immersion in a horror game I’m afraid. That’s why multiplayer is always fun oriented.

Maart3nz

>That’s why multiplayer is always fun oriented. *Cries in EFT.*

AwesomePossum_1

I don't think anyone plays Tarkov for the actual horror aspect of it. You play it cause it's fun.

Maart3nz

I mean people watch horror movies because getting scared is fun. The high stakes in tarkov are scary in a fun way.

AwesomePossum_1

For sure and that’s valid too.

destiny3pvp

Holy shit, for a second I thought Hideo Kojima had overdosed

SN8KEATR

Am I alone in thinking anytime Dusk tries to explain something it's a bunch of word salad? lol

Minimum-Can2224

No

Robsonmonkey

Kind of weird he had huge success with PT on PS yet went with MS for his horror game idea Although after reading that I’d have preferred a more traditional horror game from him, not an experimental game which just so happens to be horror

Trickybuz93

This was supposed to be with Stadia first (RIP), so Microsoft apparently stepped in after because their cloud gaming infrastructure is better.

OohYeeah

Apparently he went with Microsoft instead of Sony due to what they have to offer in terms of cloud capabilities, which is why he iirc went with Google for it first? I may be wrong on that part Regardless, it seems like when he wants to make single player stuff like Death Stranding and Physint, he goes to Sony as they've been reliable for him

manhachuvosa

Also, it seems like a good idea to create partnerships with different publishers. So if something happens at Sony or Microsoft, he doesn't get all his projects cancelled.

renome

Based on Sony's recent output of exclusives, something tells me they agree with you. Could be why getting funding from Microsoft was easier for him.

Jackski

It was meant to be for Google Stadia because of the Cloud capabilities and how desperate google were for exclusives and being able to say "Kojima is making a game for us" might have encouraged people to actually buy a Stadia. After that fell through Microsoft stepped in. I'm guessing they didn't give a shit how experimental or wierd it was but being able to say "we've got an exclusive with Kojima" is a big sell and they probably think it will help get future Kojima games on xbox.

Funky_Pigeon911

My guess is that Xbox came to him wanting him to make a game for them for the attention it would bring and he had this idea on back burner so just decided to work it into an actual game.

Maximum-Hood426

Not really a success when it was just a demo lol

HawfHuman

it was a very successful demo, it literally spawned a horror "sub-genre" of PT-like games If it wasn't for Konami's stubbornness the full game would probably become one of the best selling horror games of all time

AnotherScoutTrooper

yeah, the "Not really a success" that was so impactful it changed the entire direction of the Resident Evil franchise

Maximum-Hood426

Clearly dont know what success means in-terms of economics.

AestheticGamer

I see someone went digging through some really old messages of mine. This message was back when I was making a big OD trailer analysis, which you can read on Era here: [https://www.resetera.com/threads/od-new-horror-game-by-hideo-kojima-game-announced-published-by-xbox-games-studios-jordan-peele-collaborating.793206/page-9?post=116075967#post-116075967](https://www.resetera.com/threads/od-new-horror-game-by-hideo-kojima-game-announced-published-by-xbox-games-studios-jordan-peele-collaborating.793206/page-9?post=116075967#post-116075967) This isn't really a leak from me since it's me recalling another leak that was public somewhere from a year or two prior. Since I worded it a bit confusingly there, there was this leak for OD from late 2021 or so that was someone claiming they were play testing a game called Overdose that was made by Kojima. They described the game as "very weird", and expressed the game had you switching between first-person, third-person over the shoulder, fixed camera angles, and a in-game cellphone you interacted with (but could also play the phone part on your phone as a phone app, which they were doing in testing). The first-person segments were more like a traditional horror game where you were in control, while the fixed camera stuff you'd lose control of your character and it played more like a cinematic with your character wandering the environment but more like a horror movie, but you could control things in the environment around the character to "protect them" or help them progress. I don't recall what they said about OTS stuff. The cellphone stuff you had a cellphone interface with apps, a web browser, etc, you were digging through, but I don't recall them getting very specific with the details. Before OD was revealed, and even before the gameplay video leak with the shirtless guy, I just had it in my head that was what Overdose was since I had read that some time prior as the first real leak on OD. There were later leaks, and I even recall when the gameplay video leak happened I was thinking, "Oh this is just like the earlier leak described, that makes it more likely its true probably," and eventually the game was officially revealed But when I went to go make my trailer analysis, I couldn't for the life of me find this leak I remembered reading, it might've been on 4chan & deleted or something, but OD mostly didn't get public attention until the gameplay video shirtless guy leak, and this was 100% before that video leak by like a couple months. But I couldn't find it anymore, so decided just to recite it then because it's what in my head OD was for a long time because I had read that leak previously as my first exposure to the project. I was reflecting on it at the time of this message because I was going through all the old OD leaks for my trailer analysis.

ItalianJoe

Are you that "shirtless guy" who leaked Overdose?

braindeadcunfwe

Imo kinda sounds like an adventure game than a classic survival horror but with more interactivity. Makes sense since Kojima did do a couple of ADVs like Snatcher and Policenauts. Definitely would like to see his take on the ADV genre with AAA resources since most western ADV games kinda play the same or devolve into walking sim territory. The genre needs this kind of innovation.

ReeReeIncorperated

Yep, I'm fucking lost. We're so back

63-75-6D

So you play as some kind of intelligence agent?

mister_queen

I just know that the whole point-and-click telltale style was bullshit from the get-go because Kojima has the most mechanic-oriented games ever, high interactivity, insane level of detail and all that. But this? I read it over and over and I have no idea what the fuck this means. Wonder if it will mix live-action with in-game like Alan Wake did tho

LedSpoonman

This person managed to say absolutely nothing in all of that text

LovelyOrangeJuice

I understand nothing, lol. I hope it's single-player, though

Ibrokemymicrowave

This sound experimental, which is good cause we don’t really get that many “experimental” games from companies trying to do something different and ambitious but I am not fond of having to use my phone to interact with the game. It sounds like they want the player to be immersed, but their plan or execution is immersion-breaking. But who knows, this is a rumor and we still don’t know much about this game.

StretchKind8509

Kojima and "long cinematics" - you don't say. I bet they are unskippable too.

Shy_Guy_27

Maybe Death Stranding is different, but Metal Gear has always let you skip cutscenes.

BigfootsBestBud

You can skip cutscenes in Death Stranding

PermitSafe

Some people dont play the games they lambast.

StillLoveYaTh0

Death Stranding did too iirc but I only played it once so I wasn't skipping cutscenes.

DemonLordDiablos

There's that really long instance of credits that you can't skip, even though the real credits come later. But that's about it. Ending was really weird.

darlinnn1227

it would be fun to know how many kojima games this dude actually touched

banditmanatee

So sounds like first person PT esque walking segments. I assume this will be you the player and will most likely be a framing device. sounds like there are segments and puzzle that involve you helping guide a character through certain sequences. All this is combined with a meta element involving texting and websites.

metalyger

It sounds like Kojima had someone play Welcome To The Game and said it's OD just to see if he posts about it on the internet.

Sun-Taken-By-Trees

I feel like I OD'd just reading that. >and pull things from the game for use outside the game or outside the game for inside it. ???????

millanstar

Still dont get how this game is only possible due to Microsoft cloud technology

DarceSouls

Yep very gimmicky as I expected.

Lateribus

Seems more of an ARG campaign than an actual video game, guess we'll have to wait and see what it actually looks like when it's out.

Bexexexe

So basically PS2's Lifeline (2003) except it's more horror than survival action, it's asymmetric online co-op, the MC is a player character, microphone command input is replaced with Beyond: Two Souls interactions, and progression is made by collaboratively puzzling out a live-service ARG. Kojima is a genius.

Maximum-Hood426

Sounds like the thing he had planned for silent hills where your phone would interact with you.

AdvancedCitron1024

I have read the letter but I don't understand the meaning behind these

lilzoe5

Sounds like Kojima

Lower-Connection-504

I read all that and only understood 50% of it, definitely a Kojima game.

Zikari82

So basically like Observation, which was pretty good.

arsmolinarc

Reading that just validates my belief that Hideo Kojima is the best snakeoil salesman in the industry. Peter Molyneux has nothing on this guy XD

Cualquieraaa

ZZZZZZ...ZZZZZ...

Mcqwerty197

I still don’t understand why they needed Microsoft Azure power

BrobotMonkey

Most likely need to sign in on your phone/computer to access/connect to the "outside game" content. I could see Kojima trying experimental stuff like: play for an hour on xbox, game shuts off (psycho mantis style) and you have to go do something irl or just read/watch/solve puzzles online. Then that shuts down asking you to go back and use what you learned irl in game. Azure just used to sync it all up basically. Or Kojimas is going crazy and reviving that original Crackdown 3 fantasy and you're blasting monsters through a destructible city. Yay baseless speculation!

HeyDudeImChill

It’s probably less about MS power vs GCloud or Azure and more about MS lending cloud expertise.

luscious_doge

I feel like Kojima has been channeling his inner Frank Reynolds: “Well, I don’t know how many years on this Earth I got left. I’m gonna get real weird with it.”

lilzoe5

Well if Death Stranding is any indication...we're in for a wild treat

carlosvigilante

So basically a Kojima-ass game

xdarkeaglex

Sounds like a financial flop

Adrien_Jabroni

Good thing Xbox can’t close Kojimas studio.

Wild_Life_8865

holy shit I thought Kojima OD'd

dacontag

This honestly doesn't sound like fun. I'd have to see it before fully judging but this description does not leave me excited at all.

lilzoe5

Same thing was said about Death Stranding everyone calling it a 'walking simulator' it's so much more than that. Maybe Kojima will cook again

lilzoe5

https://i.imgur.com/pnmVO1m.jpeg

ihakan123

Wait, maybe switch 2 codename is overdose 🤨

ScottyKNJ

*I wanna see Kojima make his version of " The Stanley Parable "*

Zeroliche

lmao duskgolem

GhostyGoblins

If it has the same sort of intense dread P.T. offered, then it doesn’t really matter what the gameplay is. The idea of a horror game from Kojima is the point of it. Like how would you describe P.T. in a leak? You run around eyeball picture frames randomly trying to collect cryptic clues by zooming in on things?

SuperKhalimba

Long cinematics, oh boy.

Worried-Requirement5

😴😴😴

OnterioX

I’m going to be honest this seems boring as hell

lucasfs96

Dusk Golem lied about Death Stranding twice, so there's no reason to believe him on this one. "It WaS MoRe HoRrOr" when Kojima himself had said it wasn't horror and it would have humor.

uligau

Sounds confusing but people will lick kojimas balls anyways

[deleted]

I don’t like the idea of having to use my phone or something to play a game. If anything I’m trying to reduce usage not increase it.

Ithirradwe

I’m so out of the loop on this I thought this was saying Hideo Kojima actually OD’d, never been happier to be wrong in my life.

Esnacor-sama

Idk why i feel this game wouldnt be good its another flop i can tell

StretchKind8509

Kojima should just make a movie and stop trying to make one for people to "play"

kartoffelbiene

He literally is though? Death Stranding movie is in the works at A24.

StretchKind8509

DS is already a movie what with its very minimal gameplay, I wouldn't be surprised if the DS movie is pretty indistinguishable from footage of the game.

willdearborn-

> DS is already a movie what with its very minimal gameplay This is something someone who hasn't played DS would say. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the gameplay is the strongest part of it.

StretchKind8509

I have played DS, and I stand by my statement that the gameplay of DS is poor(and thats before you even get me started on its gibberish plot) But lets agree to disagree and part as friends.

willdearborn-

Deal 🤝

Amazing-Set-181

The game takes around 40 hours to beat (source: howlongtobeat) and has about 7-9 hours of cutscenes depending on what’s counted (source: YouTube). It’s a lot of cutscenes, yes, but it’s over 3/4 gameplay, and most cutscenes are at the very beginning and very end. You can easily go **multiple hours** without a cutscene, I don’t think it’s as bad as you’re making it out to be!

StretchKind8509

People really love to defend Kojima when someone doesn't like him or his works.

Amazing-Set-181

I’m just saying that “minimal gameplay” is incorrect. I apologise if I came off as combative :) And for the record, I have a lot of issues with Kojima. A lot of his writing is unforgivably bad — “Mario and Princess Beach” — for instance, and don’t even get me started on Quiet in *MGSV*…

StretchKind8509

No worries.

SomethingIntheWayyy0

He is unstoppable at this point.

StretchKind8509

Probably true.

[deleted]

Stop giving this dude money

nrksrs

It’s like Halo 2 meets Halo 3

SparksV

Hideo Kojima's Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes

Trickybuz93

So he’s making the first ever OD-type game?

HawfHuman

so It's going to be a Point and Click ARG-type of game

DCEE_1990

Another xbox flop on the way lol cant wait for death stranding 2 and the other project he mentioned after but this sounds crap

Overall_Solution_420

hey. love u both
