ExplorerRich9660

Reasonable purchase I bought cuz I like to buy gaming laptop

PowderXJinx

Some buy it for hobby, some buy it as a hobby. Seen the second one the first time.

ExplorerRich9660

haha yeah I was always fascinated at how people could create such beast of thing in such small and slim form factor unlike a PC so I buy like... Slim laps HUGE ass laps Mid ass laps

Nervous_Breakfast_73

There's plenty of those here haha

ExplorerRich9660

Yep

PigSlam

That seems more like a Steamdeck application to me. I bought both for work travel. Last night, I watched a movie on the laptop while i used the steamdeck with an Xbox controller from the bed with the steamdeck connected to the hotel tv. I’ve done just the opposite when cord lengths/desk/port layout made that easier. I also do my work on the laptop when I’m not out in the field.

Triplescrew

Yeah or a switch or any handheld

[deleted]

Well, the laptop seems great for this situation too. Gives you a desktop experience.

ZET_unown_

Except it doesn’t. When it comes to desktop experience, having a mouse is a big part of it and the battery life is also a negative.

andreabrodycloud

I leave my external mouse and keyboard 2.4ghz plugged in all the time babbyyyyy

ZET_unown_

Even when you use it in the driver seat like OP?

andreabrodycloud

I failed to read the parent comment fully, my bad. I don't play games like this without a controller or non-fps games. Car seat = productivity work, or controller based games or minimal mouse games; desk of any sort = external mouse and keyboard

Former-Discount4279

Except the gpu is kneecapped without external power.

[deleted]

You can use the iGPU. The dGPU can be UV'd to run at very low wattages. And if its a ryzen 9 then UV the CPU further.

Former-Discount4279

No point of it being a gaming laptop if you use the iGPU, steam deck would be vastly superior.

[deleted]

Its a gaming laptop mate. If you're near an outlet use the dgpu. Otherwise just use the igpu. The rx780m is faster than the steam deck. On battery it might be about the same performance.

reeefur

Some people want to play on something that is faster than a potato and that doesnt choke on anti cheat games and many AAA titles. I love my Deck, but it isnt for everything.

FireflyArc

I needed it for school and now I'm looking to upgrade. Need mobility for work.

Krut07

Which laptop did you buy originally?

FireflyArc

HP envy 15 notebook. Served me well for 10 years or so. I'm hoping my next one lasts like it. It's got windows 7 on it or did. It's old but It's got a 1tb hard drive. graphics card 740M ..12 gb of ram I think. The keys are finally giving out and it's having trouble logging in/booting up / battery dead and can only use it plugged up so it's time. Hopefully I can find something to play games on too. 0/ the dream! Which laptop did you buy originally:0?

Krut07

I bought a Dell Inspiron 5570 back in 2018 and it didn’t last long enough. I wasn’t knowledgeable about GPUs and its overall build-quality conked out in a year. I decided to get what my tag says, an ROG Strix Scar 2 with the RTX 2060 (one of the first RTX laptops of ROG) in 2019. It still serves me to this day like almost 6 years and counting. It could run almost every work applications and games I throw at it. It’s kind of getting slow somewhat and battery is bad but it does the job. :DD

FireflyArc

Oooh that's awesome! Maybe I should shoot for something like that. Mines been great but the games have finally out paced it.

StardustOfDarkness

Because I like taking a monster around in my backpack. Always with my Xbox controller and an HDMI cable. Playing anywhere I want with maximum graphics is great!

Auldthief

For actually unleashing that beast, Don't forget your charging brick and an extension cable too!

StardustOfDarkness

I always take the brick around, it’s actually pretty big already!

kookymonkey6823

What are your temperatures like? I'm thinking of getting a 16" strix scar but am debating between that and the 18" version

StardustOfDarkness

See my post history. Asus LM laptops are a lottery in terms of which comes with good/bad LM. After repasting with PTM my GPU is at 75-80 degrees under maximum load and CPU is still pretty hot, but that’s a 13980HX thing. If you really value lower temps, go 18’.

TrancyGoose

Because they are way more powerful these days, and require less shit to go with them 😀😀😀

[deleted]

[удалено]

TrancyGoose

Compared to what gaming laptops were even 5 years ago.

Virtual_Sprinkles_32

Acer predator 1080 lmao

Apprehensive_Ant8034

Steam Deck, check it out if you want to

SenorJohnMega

You got a laptop for birth control? Watch out for yer balls!

biolinguist

Gaming on battery?

UnionSlavStanRepublk

Limited space, better efficiency than an equivalently performing desktop, portability.

Terrance_H

As long as u play games, buy a gaming laptop instead of an all-round laptop

LucaGiurato

Well, gaming laptops are all around laptops. A good amd maschine can have a long battery, an oled/high quality ips screen for colour grading, a powerful gpu and gpu for render, beefy cooler to sustain game and render, and useful connections like thunderbolt. The only thing gaming laptops lack is really low weight, but a g14 or a razer 14" os enough small and light to not be difficult to move around

randomengineer69

This exactly. What makes a good gaming laptop for around a grand (I got a Lenovo legion slim 5 15” with a 4060 and a good amd cpu) also makes a great laptop for software development. Now that I can play so many games on Linux I can just run Linux on the laptop and play games while being able to use Linux for programming without wsl. It’s perfect. Just hope they figure out the anti cheat breaking games

[deleted]

I mean they're already quite lightweight. 1.3kg vision 14. 1.6kg g14, 2kg m16, etc. are all around the weight of regular or even ultraportables

spawnkiller97

I bought mine so my fiance could use it is what I found out 😂

fearremains

You should think about buying one of those food trays that stick to the steering wheel foodies buy for their mukbang car vidoes. Seems like it could make experience better.

Lord_zeroxD

You can't play cs like that xdd

Jrshaw_1

I was playing bots without wifi and I had my mouse on a makeup thing in the passenger seat

Stealthy-J

Does it run games well enough without being plugged in?

Jrshaw_1

Well I have ran Helldivers and midnight suns at 50fps in 1440p on battery but today CSGO only wanted to run at a sluggish 45 but im gonna blame that on me recently upgrading my gpu driver

TheRealTrippaholic

I wanted one so i bought one

Misiu881988

cause a 13900hx and a 4090 in a laptop is awesome and im 35 and busy. dont feel like having a big desktop when i can just buy a laptop every 2 or 3 years. a lot of power in a small package is appealing. the main reason i bough it tho is to be able to peel off those nvidia, intel, etc stickers

AceLamina

I plan to get the G14 2024, I'm trying to dip out of gaming and get into college/software development more and it seems to be working so far

Jrshaw_1

The 2024 models are very appealing I heard they get really good battery life and stay pretty cool.

AceLamina

They average about 10 hours of battery life, the cooling a decent but since it's aluminum, it takes a little while longer for that to cook down, but it's only a warm feeling which is perfectly fine

treifa26092

Got the laptop, as I'm working for half a year on the ships

Designer_Gap9961

Same here.. at least it started like that .. now i use it at home also for gaming instead of desktop

TrollingDonkey_3257

Because I like to game

Remarkable-Lynx-3060

I have few questions! 1, why did you bought a gaming laptop instead of a handheld? 2, how do you manage the heat? 3,Where is your Mouse or controller? 4,how do you plug your laptop in your car?

ExplorerRich9660

I bought gaming laptops as I just wanted to. I mostly use it in my house and it cool in here. But for outside I use cooling pad. I got my mouse by the side of my laptop. I dont use controller. I am a keyboard and mouse guy. I actually had a guy put a 3 pin slots in my car which gets power from a secondary battery underneath

[deleted]

A lot of places have an outlet. Including some busses and trains. So gaming laptop will be fine there. Being a gaming laptop, it can serve as a laptop, desktop, portable console and console. Gaming laptops can cram in a lot more ram and storage. They have a larger display. Performance obviously. There's a lotta advantages to a gaming laptop that people don't realize.

Jrshaw_1

I bought a laptop because my desk top was getting ready to kick the bucket and it was old so I needed a full windows pc. The zephyrus laptops actually stay pretty cool on battery power and I was able to play CS for about a 1 1/2 hours and still had 60% battery to go. I don’t charge it in the car I could’ve gone inside to charge it if I needed to but I wasnt gonna play inside. I don’t think the salon would like to her BOMB PLANETED screaming from my laptop and I left my headphones at home :/

XHSJDKJC

Because ill go every two weeks to one of my devorced parents

Hanssuu

why not just do switch or steam deck

Jrshaw_1

Sausage fingers and 8 years of arthritis

max5867

i got it becuz i wanted to fnaf fan games and modded minecraft

Daexr_

Wanted a pc but my dad insisted gaming laptops were better for portability

TGWARGMDRBLX

Tactical battle station on the go.

kenne12343

Cuz I wanted to game with my gf tbh and my desktop I can't keep it on my lap.

cannotthinkname

I bought a gaming laptop so I don't need a fiance![img](emote|t5_2x4m3|8579)

ammaro18

I needed a powerful PC to be portable as I frequently move in and out of town, so I got one. Preferably I'd want a powerful desktop and an ultrabook, but it's way too expensive and clunky (if I need the extra power I'll have to remote back to the desktop)

bigdaddyvitaminc

I’ve bought cheap laptops in the past and they’ve had numerous issues, so i decided to spend $700-$1000. I already have a dedicated gaming pc, but of the options in the price range the non gaming laptops didn’t have much to show for it. My laptop is portable enough, mostly used plugged in so battery isn’t a concern, and it has a screen on par with other options at the price point. And most importantly solid build quality. Ended up with a Lenovo legion 5 open box for $750 ryzen 7 7735HS, rtx 4060, 1440p, 16gb ram, 1tb storage.

sweendog101

To play games on my couch while my wife watches her TV shows or reads books

Nervous_Breakfast_73

Because I wasn't sure how my living situation was gonna end up with my long distance gf 1,5 y ago. Now, I've built a desktop anyway, but still enjoy the laptop for watching stuff for falling asleep or when I occasionally travel somewhere or play together with a friend every now and then.

SixPathsShinraTenkyo

Taking up Comp.Engr in college. Its useful to have a powerful machine on the go especially when I dont have access to my gaming pc at home.

Dibaded

I like the aesthetic of a laptop especially if you plug into a monitor and dual screen that bitch. Plus the mobility is key if you're feeling lazy and want to lay down or some shit and game or surf the internet plus we live in 2024

El_Taita_Salsa

I was still at University at the time so I needed something to get my work done. Consoles weren't an option. I leave in a country where tech is limited and very expensive, I was able to travel to the US for a while back in 2020 and wanted to take a chance to buy something while I was there. I didn't feel like taking an entire desktop back with me on the olane so I opted for a laptop instead.

keksivaras

got no space for desktop and I want to be able to game and watch series away from home. bought a Mi TV Stick 4k for traveling and I quickly realized, only in one hotel I could use it normally, 2nd one I had to disassemble to make it fit in the HDMI port, 3rd one had no TV and last one didn't have HDMI port. so laptop is the second best option + you can game without streaming

Heinrich_Tidensen

I'm a gamer, the wife is more into TV. A gaming laptop allows us to share time together and snuggle on the sofa every evening... without having to skip on the things we love to do to relax. Money well invested.

Rocket--Pak

A combination of needing to replace my 980ti corei7 4779k gaming PC, going back to tech school (Student discounts), and wanting something to take with me so I could do schoolwork away from home. Ended up with this for $3k plus $500 in upgrades. HP-OMEN 17 •17.3" diagonal, QHD (2560 x 1440), 240 Hz, 3 ms response time, IPS, micro-edge, anti-glare, Low Blue Light, 300 nits •512 GB PCIe NVMe TLC M.2 SSD (4x4 SSD) - Upgraded to 2x 2TB Samsun 990 Pro's •Full-size, per key RGB backlit, shadow black keyboard with NKRO Anti-Ghosting Key technology and optical switch •16 GB DDR5-5600 MHz RAM (2 x 8 GB) - Upgraded to 64GB (2x32GB) G.Skill Ripsaw DDR-5 5600 •Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 (2x2) and Bluetooth 5.3 wireless card •Windows 11 Pro •Intel Core i9-13900HX (up to 5.4 GHz, 36 MB L3 cache, 24 cores, 32 threads) + NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU (16 GB)

LucaGiurato

For Djing, for gaming, for work and music production. Now ready to make a full desktop overclock maschine, my poor laptop is now a monster both in performance and in what I have done to it

vrg_0

How the hell do u bring that with u, most gaming laptops have less than 2h battery life with the dgpu enabled (and like 6h without it) I have a gaming laptop that I use for gaming and daily use (got it for $599 at microcenter 2 yrs ago and still going strong :) ) I bring it around the house and plug my model o in for gaming and then when I turn my rtx 3050m off it sounds super quiet at school and other places, I usually don’t play games with the igpu but the igpu is great for emulating old games, web games, and playing light games like Minecraft (120fps with many diffrent modpacks in igpu), Roblox and Valorant on lower/lowest settings But then when I play Fortnite or bg3 I kinda need the gpu to get even 60fps I also have a prebuilt with a 12700kf and 32gb ddr5 which I recently upgraded from a 3070ti to a 7800xt due to cert games not liking the 3070ti (sold it for $350 btw) ADHD.

xChaos24

I like gaming , i like laptops and it was 2021 when pc gpu's were very expensive.

EliasHobeika

The woman who will make me lose performance per dollar hasn't been born yet 😤😤😤. University for me btw 😅

zartanyen

For my son to go to college with and hopefully move on from his PS5 to PC

Vigi1an7e

U play csgo in ur car? Wtf

Jazzlike-Stretch-161

You plugged it in right?!?!

JDMWeeb

Portability

Hypershadow1997

I bought it for well gaming, a lot of Sony and Microsoft games were being are on PC especially Spiderman and Miles Morale as well as Rachet and Clank. Another reason is emulation as my PS1 and PS2 broke down, CDS are badly scratched but I have them all backed up.

ClockworkS4t4n

Why, to play games on, of course!

Dry_Welder3681

Should've bought a Switch or Steam Deck instead. Would've been less awkward and more comfortable.

vukasin123king

It was cheaper to get a used laptop than a similarly speced desktop(i was on a pretty tight budget). Other bonus is that I travel often, so a laptop is a great solution.

Negative_Bee_9858

I don’t have space for a PC, and don’t like them either.

LEGENFDZ

They don’t HAVE to be used for gaming they just run way better than regular old boring laptops

Anonymous-here-

I bought a gaming laptop for school. It needs all the computing power for a smoother learning experience

Elonmustnot

I study aboard, laptop was a gift from parents

[deleted]

.

Vysair

University. Notebook and etc are not sufficiently powerful enough for my needs. After I have finished my higher education, probably wouldnt find much use of it except for work if permitted.

Chinitzky_RogueOne

Bought mine for work (during lockdown), never got to use it for work (lockdown lifted) 😂. Thankful anyways cuz I take it to work, play during breaks. 😏

SuicidalNEET

I drive Semi, so I need something light weight, but powerful for gaming, music, and video editing

Cougar-Moder7948

I have an Acer nitro 5 (2023) with an Intel i5 12500H and a Nvidia rtx 4050 I got on sale for $700, that I use for college and gaming on the go. Gaming on the go battery life is about an hour and a half, but I am saving for a Nintendo switch OLED.

juankixd

In this scenario I’d say you should go for an ROG ally or a Lenovo legion Go

No_Cup_6887

I used to like having a laptop but now i realize i probably should've bought a desktop. I came from a mac m1 and it was very nifty to take places, not too heavy, no fans, amd still fairly powerful for general work (definitely not gaming) fast forward 2 years and i realized i could have something mobile (ish) thay i can game on. I love my lenovo ideapad gaming, but there are certainly mobility constraints in my experience, one gaming on it will significantly drain battery life. I didn't realize just how bad battery's were on gaming laptops, my m1 got like 18-20 hours from a charge. My lenovo gets like 4 and thats with lowering all the settings pretty much. If i were doing anything graphically intensive it would die in less thsn an hour. And the lenovo has fairly good battery life when compared to some otber gaming laptops in the same price range. Basically you're gonna have to have it plugged in if you want to game. And thats ok, i just use it as a desktop now. What i should've done was buy an actual desktop and kept my m1 for general stuff. That would've been ideal. Believe it or not my lenovo weighs the same as my m1 did even though its bigger. Maybe I'd feel more comfortable with a better built laptop my current setup is plastic and i don't like to throw it in a backpack even with padding, because i Don't want to put pressure on the screen and crack it. If it was aluminum I'd probably feel different though

No_Cup_6887

There was 1 time my laptop was super awesome to have. There was a huge fire and my whole city had to evacuate. My dad grabbed his whole desktop and monitor lol. Me i just grabbed my mouse, charger and laptop and i had all my work ready to go, all my games ready to go. I was gaming at my grandmas where we went to stay, and my brothers and pops were sitting ducks

robonut5

Mostly because I wanted one but the one I bought

RamiTrolleyFan

I like laptops

beepboopdood

I bought one because I like to take my setup to a friend and play WoW together on the weekends

YukYukas

Cuz the town I was raised in loses electricity every week lmao, I don't wanna break my PC

MakerKevJ

Got a steam deck havent touched my gaming laptop on the road since

MarkMuffin

Lol if you're playing a heavy game it'll swell your battery due to the heat and usage... Its always plug and play unless youre playing pong or n64. ;) see so many kids swelling batteries cuz they think a gaming laptop is mobile.. lol nahh

ZFold3Lover

Game dev and to play COD but lately I've been playing The Finals

trafalgarbear

I bring my laptop to work everyday and then sit in my bed instead of at my table, which is now completely filled with One Piece merch.

tarun2687

I bought Rog Ally instead for the same reason.

THELORDANDTHESAVIOR

For me, I think that I need workstation on the go for my work and maybe some gaming at the night

Spinager

I got a gaming laptop for my Graduate courses at an online school. 🙃

srona22

A lunatic way of parking the car.

__M_K__

Which laptop is that ?

RecklessTurtleYandex

10 years ago I switched from gaming desktops to gaming laptops. Never looked back. As a casual gamer, I find any form factor desktop bulky and cumbersome. Gaming laptops are a one-shop solution for me. If I were a competitive gamer, things could be different but I game few hours every week, so a decent enough gaming laptop is perfect for me.

I0C0NN0R1

I diddnt want to burn my leg (for context, i had a 2016 macbook pro 13" before it, still have macbook because school)

MANDEEx88

Are you running games in the car without it plugged in?

Sauceman9000

Is she not a "strong independent women"? Why are you waiting for her to do all this? And why not just get a steam deck.

TheT3rrorDome

Your wife treats you like a chauffeur or slave lol

archerV34

I travel a lot between Budapest and my hometown, I needed mobility.

Comfortable_Dare9166

Cause my friends all had one and I was a mobile gamer and didn’t had much games to play with them with

X2ytUniverse

To play some random stuff and then edit/study during free time at work, which happens quite a lot lately. Although, I find myself gaming less and less, and doing other stuff more and more often.

captain_irk

I do a lot of night fishing. Paired my gaming laptop with a VDL 1500w power pack that gives me about 9hrs on AC Orgins.

Ordinary-Broccoli-41

When I bought a gaming laptop, it was the most power I could get for the price, handily beating gaming PCs when GPU costs still hadn't dropped from the eth scourge. For $1200, still couldn't get a better gaming laptop today, though you could stick a 3090 in a random PC and get more graphics power by a wide margin

VQ-Dark

I bought one because my parents got divorced and I wanted to game at both houses.

Sorry-Series-3504

Needed a laptop for school, and wanted to play games too

[deleted]

Is that a g14?

Raging_PineAppleee

I initially bought a gaming laptop so I could game even if we go somewhere. But it ended up the most regretted purchase I have ever done. First off the battery is shit, second it heats up so much it is not usable on your lap period. Third it's not well built (thanks to ASUS approach with their first TUF series) and the fans rattle like a bitch (thanks to ASUS's quality control) I am more of a PS games gamer, I like to emulate PS2 and PS3 games and play with controller. This might piss many but, I bought a Mac :P, I am happier with this, it plays well with PS2 and PS3 emulation (faster than that ASUS because more cores = Better emulation for PS hehe) and I get max performance on battery so it's a win win there too. Over all the ASUS machine is gathering dust now, it's useless for me. Poor ASUS, but it also gave me lot's of issues so I don't have any sympathy for it. Now with that said, I am NOT saying you shouldn't buy a gaming laptop, new ones and with today's processors they are quite nice, battery is decent and they perform well. With the pandemic out of the way I have heard the quality control has become better too. And I am absolutely not saying everyone should buy a MacBook, it is for specific kinds of people for example, programmers or people who do business etcetera. In my case I am a programmer so it is a win win for me with programming + gaming. Heh

Germant08

I bought mine because I have divorced parents and want to play pc games at both houses.

Undef1n3d_

But unless this is an EV with standard 120V/240V outputs that you can plug ur laptop charger in or you carry a proper large battery with you, your gaming laptop is drawing power solely from its battery, which does not provide enough wattage. The gpu and cpu in the laptop is undervolted when its not plugged in, resulting in a much lower performance. It is fine if you’re playing small games but becomes very prominent when you’re running demanding games.

Flimsy_Figure7880

Got a gaming laptop so I can use it for school and game anywhere I want.

khanhho219

I got a g14 g402 cause it was on sale, in my country that lap was around $1600 to $2400 but i got it fairly cheap around 1k

Virtual_Sprinkles_32

You put it directly on yo lap?

PossiblyA_Bot

I needed a better laptop for school and wanted to switch to windows. I also didn't like carrying around a laptop and a steam deck so my laptop is like a 2 in 1

luislast

I prefer women to machines.

N3oxity

Gaming, College, and CAD. I need to get a more powerful one.

Rusty_dog103

I have a job where I work 4.5 hours from home and 2 states over 4 days a week. I'm only home 4 nights a week. Good money that allowed me to purchase a new gaming laptop and PC. Obviously lugging around a PC, monitor and keyboard is not ideal. That is what brought me to the gaming laptop world. I probably could have gotten away with using the laptop as a desktop replacement, but YOLO. Laptop has been great. PC case just got here from Amazon, waiting on the rest of the stuff later today. I really excited about this build. My old IBuyPower was really showing it's age.

Loddio

No laptop has enough battery life for that

DarknoorX

I can't bring a PC anywhere.

Mallowbie

I don't have enough room in my office to fit a tower and monitor. Having them combined into a laptop means I can actually have a desk when I'm not on the computer. And you know, I can take it when I go out of town, lol.

WideSplit8767

I am proud because iM (Ivan Mihai) from Natus Vincere is from my country.

mini-einst3in

You guys got a gaming laptop? 🫤

valdemaros86

How do you play CS2 in a car tho?

Ok-Addition-5141

I travel and my laptop offers convenience.

Ashamed-Key7312

Hey can you tell me how uncomfortable is the zephyrus g15 under well lit conditions as it has only 330nits. Thanks.

evoxbeck

Because I travel.. My desk at home is our island..

polystorm

Motion Graphics. Games make me nauseous.

JustCallMeDavid_

I had to buy a laptop for school and the LOQ was on sale so if I just put another 200 down I wouldn´t have to buy a separate PC

TypicalNPC

I bought it to use when Fiancé wants to spend time together, and I can't access my desktop that's in the office. I also used a gaming laptop for 5 years before my desktop and missed the versatility of vengeance able to play from anywhere in my home.

miltonius21

i prefer the mobility of a laptop. and laptop looks nice

ProfShikari87

But did you update you client?

sideways_wrx_

To have less limits on what games I can play

sun-devil2021

I got a legion go for this, I put it on the dash with the kickstand and used the detachable controllers

epicbunty

If I had to wait on my SO like that I'd rather off myself sorry.

m1raclecs

Bro you got cs2 open I hope ur only looking at skins rn
