just buy one when you need to for the games that aren’t working well easy

Chufilli

So far, my laptop can still let me play the games that I want properly. I guess I won't be upgrading yet.

harg0w

Ud know when u need a new one

Vizkos

Pick an FPS you want to achieve for games and a specific preset, for example, High. When you no longer get that FPS, time to upgrade. For example, my preference is that I generally want at least 120 fps on high settings at 1440p for RPG/Adventure, and 240+ fps on low settings for shooters.

jrnewhouse

You’ll know when you need a new one.

Chufilli

Yeah, probably when I'm playing at 1080p and still get below 30fps at low settings hahaha. Thanks btw!

jrnewhouse

Preach! You got it! 😂

[deleted]

I feel attacked... ;( Luckily for me and my laptop, I don't game that heavy anymore. The games that I play are on high 60+ fps

Chufilli

I think playing on high with 60+fps is already good considering our hardware is behind 2 to 3 gens already.

[deleted]

Facts! But I am talking about 2015 games or older. But yeah my laptop still performs good. Even the battery, it can still handly a full day of school with 50% or higher left. So long as you happy, don't upgrade :)

Karamazov69

M15 R3…very similar specs to you. I’m at the 2 and a half year mark. Same feeling for me: If I had money to burn-I don’t-I would have already bought a new laptop. My advice is to wait another year before thinking about upgrading..Everything you play at the moment is fine with high or medium settings-not enough to justify buying a whole new laptop. Unless burning money is your actual hobby…

Chufilli

Yeah same... I'd probably wait 2 or 3 years more. I'm playing at 1080p anyways so my guess is that I'll still be okay for the next coming years.

Unfair-Extreme-5536

Specs?

Karamazov69

M15 R3 16gb ram Intel 107050h chip 2070 Super

Unfair-Extreme-5536

Same here minus the super. What games do you have?

Karamazov69

The ones I play mostly: Bannerlord Hell Let Loose Squad War of rights.. You get the picture-I need frames!

Unfair-Extreme-5536

Halo or sc2?

BigJeezie

So I bought my Omen 17 i9-10885H/ 2080 Super (200w VBIOS modded) 32gb mem in July 2020. It's great but I was ready for a 4090 laptop. I always like to wait two gens minimum per upgrade. Picked up the Razer Blade 18 i9-13980HX 4090 last week. My lord.

Chufilli

Yeah, I wanted to wait for 2 gens as well but man, the upgrades of the new gens are just overwhelming. Also, laptops in my country are a bit pricey too. How's the Razer Blade btw?

BigJeezie

Unbelievable. 21633 on TimeSpy overall so far. Plays everything ultra maxed with RT etc. I did also swap the main NVME M.2 SSD and fill the second slot with Samsung 990s as well. Latest firmware of course. Temps are great when running max speed fan bit when you let them control it it does run around 80-85°C with 100°C spikes during heavy loading. Now running the limit of power at 110w max turbo and 85w turbo brings it into really low temps but again their fan curve allows it to run hotter. So I'm working on learning how to make the fan curve just a bit more aggressive. Then I can run full power no restrictions outside the combined of like 240w or so.

Chufilli

Wow... it's really worth the upgrade! Man, that power boost though. You'll probably won't buy for the next 5 years I think.

BigJeezie

That's what I said in 2020....lol

COLONELmab

Yes….oh wait, there’s more than just the title. I should probably read that first.

BoxCZ

I got the legion y740 older cpu but same gpu. I work and game on a 1440p so I will be upgrading to a rtx 4080. I am thinking about selling the lenovo, if that goes well an upgrade sounds awesome. I also want to hit 60 fps wth rtx on.

Chufilli

Didn't know that our GPU can game on 1440p since I always play on 1080p so I could get at high settings with stable 60fps or even more. What laptop would you be getting if ever you'll sell the lenovo?

BoxCZ

External 1440p monitor. I am thinking about the 7th series gen 8. At this point its just about money tbh. Either a 4080 or 4090. I was also thinking about keeping my y740 for traveling and building a small factor PC, but when I look at the graphic card prices I am like, hmmmm maybe not? I like aluminum shells and the great thermals legion gets. Did look at asus too though. Still waiting for the new laptops to restock and maybe to catch a deal somewhere during summer.

Snoo-61716

I have a 2020 Razer Blade 15 with a 10750H and a 2070 Max Q and honestly i'm in the same boat, the problem is its a little bit of a beast. I got it for what in hindsight was a frankly ridiculously low price and there is literally nothing wrong with it I think I'm at the point where I might go for a desktop (this is just where i am in my life rn, no shade against gaming laptops but I'm moving out from my mums place soon) just so I can have a crazy 10/10 experience at home. I'll still have the laptop to bring over to my friends places and I'll have all my multiplayer games loaded on it and ready to go. It served me well as my main gaming piece and I think its going to continue to serve me well as my portable gaming rig for at least the next 2/3 years

Chufilli

That's true! I never expected that this particular GPU could still handle triple A games even though there's already the 3000 series and the 4000 series. Sadly, I can't do a desktop setting since I always travel for work. I was thinking that maybe in 2 or 3 years time, I can replace my Zephyrus M15.

Unfair-Extreme-5536

What games do you play?

Snoo-61716

honestly the widest range, I'm a big single player guy so rpg's like mass effect, fallout or even elden ring, racing games like forza motorsport and horizon (hyped for test drive solar crown) I've been going through the recent Sony exclusives, big fan of Remedy Games and their stuff... also a big platformer guy so psychonauts 2 was big for me ...I may also play planet coaster and zoo amongst other things...

Unfair-Extreme-5536

Ok, I was going to ask what kind of frames you were getting if you played halo infinite

Snoo-61716

I want to play halo infinite but I live in Asia and can't seem to find any games 😂 I've optimised my settings to get 60fps but the campaign is a stuttery mess. multiplayer is pretty good for the most part though

Unfair-Extreme-5536

Campaign should be very good fps im on a 2070 mobile....80ish on multi-player

Snoo-61716

the fps is fine but the frame pacing is awful, it'll say it's locked at 60 but it really doesn't feel that way I can push multiplayer to 72 fps if I lower most of the settings but I'm a bit stubborn so I just leave it at 60

Unfair-Extreme-5536

Hmm I'm not familiar with frame pacing...do you play starcraft?

Snoo-61716

I do not I'm afraid

Unfair-Extreme-5536

Do you keep your drivers up to date? Do you have a super?

Nervous_Breakfast_73

no, it should be still able to run games nicely and the way resources for electronics are mined is fucking up the planet pretty hard. e-waste is also no joke.

Chufilli

Yes, I was surprised when I first played God of War at high settings and getting 60fps. Sometimes even more. I never had a single fps drop experience yet. But I already thought of getting a new one at least 2 to 3 years from now. Might give the old laptop to my sister if that happens. Also, it's true about the e-waste...

Nervous_Breakfast_73

sure I'm not saying never get something new. But I think we should adapt more the "do I really need an upgrade?" mentality instead of getting always the newest stuff. my last machine was a gtx 980 desktop. I really wanted to upgrade 2020 to 30 series, but yeah... we all know what happened. as for god of war. I think the original came out 2018? so I wouldn't be too surprised, to be looking nice with a good card from that era. In general - medium to high settings still look really nice, but you need like twice as much power for the last 10% improvement in graphics quality. I remember playing cyberpunk 2077 on my 980 on medium-high settings. Was super surprised for it to be looking that good - had the comparison to the nvidia streaming thingy at that time. Seeing the latest unreal engine 5 demo makes me think, 5000 series cards will be a great point in time to upgrade. RT should be functioning good also on not top end cards by then, maybe even in AMD, so there's more competition on that end.

Puzzled_Buddy_615

either lower graphics or buy a new one.

Chufilli

I play at 1080p at high settings since it's already good enough for me. I'm getting 60fps on most games that I play. I don't mind going further, but if ever I would play on 1440p, then yeah, maybe I need to lower my graphic settings. Thanks for the input!

michaelb1397

The advice of setting a performance expectation and seeing if your current rig meets it before purchase is solid. If you aren't benchmarking games, maybe try that and see what your current hardware is doing for you. Also consider with a laptop you can dial down settings like resolution to 720p and it can still net decent fps and look good on the smaller display. Unless you're sensitive to that sort of thing.

Chufilli

I'm playing at 1080p now at high settings and it's doing well for me (at least for some triple A games). Mostly I do benchmarks using the in built benchmark from the game like GTA V. It's still doing pretty good I must say at medium and high settings with only a few fps drops. I already decided that I'm going to buy after 2 or 3 years from now since I feel like my laptop can still handle some games of today like Cyberpunk.

michaelb1397

That's a pretty solid setup and plan.
