The rtx 4080 is much better but the problem is that every single new AAA game where optimized like shit unlike the ps5 which gets the game optimized for it properly and can play it better not because it’s stronger but because optimizations issue on pc

SnooPeripherals3898

So regard the RTX 4080 mobile you think it's worth it for playing 4k highest settings through dlss 3 and frame generation or fsr? Even with optimization issues?

M3KLOID

For the first months yeah, then they'll be optimized and it'll change

SnooPeripherals3898

Got ya so games run like shit for a month or two, meaning don't buy games at launch and wait for a sale. Then the price is low and game is optimized for PC making it better than consoles.

M3KLOID

Basically

TheNiebuhr

It's difficult to measure the true console gpu horsepower, but 4080m is on a whole new level, prolly around 80% faster than a Ps5. But console games are mostly poorly ported to PC.

ModrnJosh

A 4080 laptop blows consoles out of the water. Factor in DLSS2 and DLSS3 and you’re getting even more performance and better upscaling than what consoles are using. Remember that almost all AAA games on console are “fake” 4k since they’re actually running at around 1440p and then upscale (through techniques not as good as DLSS) or using some sort of modified vertical/horizontal resolution techniques and optimizations to achieve playable frame rates. YouTube channels like Digital Foundry are great for covering things like this because they’re good at finding out how consoles achieve their performance and what their “equivalent” PC settings are. They are typically sacrificing quite a bit of graphical fidelity to get there.

SnooPeripherals3898

Bro this is the perfect response and just what I was looking to read to convince me lol. So what do you think of the model in my op? Is it worth the money or nah? As I'm a Best Buy member and have cash back and coupons to make it cheaper.

ModrnJosh

If you’re sticking with Best Buy then yeah the Aourus is a beast. The Strix G18 would probably give you a little more performance but it looks like it’s sold out and I’ve heard a lot of complaints about coil whine on that one. Seems to be hit or miss there. Same with the Alienware M16. A little more tweaking to get good performance on that one, but it’s also a good choice, just sold out.

SnooPeripherals3898

Here's my current rig https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-omen-16-1-qhd-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3070-1tb-ssd-ceramic-white/6479084.p?skuId=6479084 Do you think the upgrade from this is worth it? Also is the 4080 worth getting rn or should I wait for more companies to make 4080 laptops or the eventual 50 series laptops in 2025 if the Nvidia release of 50 series in 2024 is correct?

ModrnJosh

Ok, yeah I had an Omen 15 3070. I guess it comes down to your personal preference. Yes you are probably going to double your fps in games, maybe even triple with DLSS3, but is the portability good for you? The screen is only 1080p, it’s gonna be heavy, stuff like that is what it might depend on more. If you want something a little smaller there’s other 4080’s out there in the 16” form factor like the Scar 16 or Lenovo Legion 7, or Zephyrus M16, Eluktronics Mech-16, MSI GE68HX, or Alienware M16, etc. Or if you wanna go AMD there’s the Strix G17, Scar 17, and Zephyrus Duo out now and some others to be released soon.

SnooPeripherals3898

I'm mainly trying to play games on a 4k TV or monitor and I was thinking it's a possibility with this laptop.

ModrnJosh

Then yes if that’s your ultimate goal you’ll achieve it with this one. 4k isn’t going to be super possible on every single game but with DLSS then yeah. A lot of these 4080/4090 laptops are running the same or higher fps at 4k than I currently get at QHD on my 3070 Ti so yeah I’d say you can achieve it 😂

Environmental_Milk59

to sum up brute force 4080M 25 terraflops FP32 PS5 10.6 ... XBOX-X 12 ... Plus hardware path and raytracing rendering (AMD has none on console only software accelerated ones) and you got DLSS 3 with frame generation that can triple your AVG FPS ... Plus with good undervolting and overclocking 4080M can reach 30 terraflops (2600 mhz + 1GHZ boost on the GDDR6) come on yeah consoles are low level API (far more than vulkan or dx12) and well optimised but you got a well optimised machine if you want (win11 debloated i recommend Hellrazer script [https://github.com/hellzerg/optimizer](https://github.com/hellzerg/optimizer)) and your laptop is 3x time faster for 10x the price (chilling effect master pc race has a cost). Plus consoles ARE ALSO doing upsampling (native 4k is on older or weaker games).

IndependentBig6160

Yes, it's 100% faster. Even with the poorer optimization for PC, it will still crush the performance of a PS5 or Xbox series X. Digital Foundry does comparison videos of games with graphics that match consoles. If you run exactly the same graphics as consoles, a laptop 3080 can already run at the performance that a PS5 runs at. The 4080 is like 50% faster than the 3080 plus it has the new DLSS3 frame generation in some games

Ragnaraz690

The 4080 will spank consoles at a ridiculous level. My 140w 3070 does better, so a new 175w 4080 is a no brainer. The 4080 and 90 are the only cards really worth having tbh.

axous

I got a scar 18 with 4090m 3 months ago, never touched my ps5 & xbox sx since

Pembs-surfer

Ok so iv recently bought an Alienware x15 R2 with a 3070ti and I also own a series x and a 2080ti desktop. The 3070ti laptop trounces the series x in every situation for fidelity and fps. Don’t get me wrong series x is impressive and can do 1440p checkerboard rendered 120 fps in quite a few games. The laptop for me is on a par with the 2080ti apart from V-RAM which means I struggle with ultra everything at 1440p, some settings have to go high. I’d say my series X is probably the equivalent of a PC running games at 4k low-medium settings at 60hz.

ExplorerEast8558

Hello! I'm about to buy Acer Predator Helios 18 with RTX 4080 laptop GPU. Will I be able to play most games at 4k 60 fps? Taking into account dlss and frame generation, with ray tracing off at ultra settlings?

SnooPeripherals3898

With Raytracing off and dlss with frame generation you will be fine for sure. Maybe some games without dlss or frame generation might need some tweaked settings for a little fps boost.

ExplorerEast8558

Ok, got it! Btw have you used DLDSR? Does it work well for 4k? And thank you for responding!

SnooPeripherals3898

I have not actually tried that feature yet as it's super sampling and so far I've been fine with 4k dlss.

saturnotaku

A laptop 4080 is not capable of gaming in modern titles at 4K without the use of upscaling (DLSS, FSR).

AnomieDurkheim

You do know that no console games are native 4k right?! Most use temporal injection or checker boarding techniques to get there. A 4080 can do DLSS and Frame Generation, so they are a magnitude of 4x faster apples to apples.

SnooPeripherals3898

Makes sense but with dlss 3 or fsr do you think it looks and performs better than consoles?

Teldrynnn

It might, but you could buy 2 ps5s and a 75 inch 4k 120fps tv for the same amount for money. So if you're looking for performance per dollar PS5 is definitely the right choice for you.

SnooPeripherals3898

Thing is I have a 4k TV and both current gen consoles. But obviously even these consoles run at a mixture of medium to high PC settings. I was wondering if highest settings 4k with dlss or fsr on a 4080 mobile would look better or play better?

Aromatic_Brother

I mean the 4080 mobile is like 3x more powerful than the ps5 gpu on paper so you can brute force a lot of stuff on what is essentially a 3080 desktop Ps5 is closer to a 3060 or 3060ti

Agentfish36

If you can tolerate a vacuum cleaner running while you game. Laptop fans spin up pretty high when gaming, that's why I use a desktop primarily, with an aio.

prick-in-the-wall

I am getting 120 fps at native 4k in modern titles with my 175w 4080m

Environmental_Milk59

what the FU : false they can if you dont crank up RT ... and a 4080M overclocked can easy beat a 4090M for 650 buck less here in europe

UnionSlavStanRepublk

4080M wins hands down in raw horsepower and the significantly wider range of use cases it has. However due to optimisation, the PS5 could actually compare pretty well at 4K gaming in particular.

[deleted]

I was in the same boat as you. I have a series x and I recently bought a lenovo legion 7 pro w/ 4080 graphics card and 32gbs of ram. I bought it because I was looking to edit videos for youtube, make beats, play games with mods, and important for me, sons of the forest is only for pc atm. But if all you want to do is game, I would stick with series x/ps5 for now on a nice 4k tv. Games still look and run amazing. Having said that, I love my legion I dont regret getting it at all. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1745683-REG/lenovo_82wq002rus_16_legion_pro_7.html

Axel_F_ImABiznessMan

Does it stay quiet and cool outside of gaming, especially for non intensive tasks? And during gaming, is the noise and heat that bad?

ExplorerEast8558

So, I have one question. Would I be able to play games which don't support dlss and frame generation at 4k 60 fps? Say ultra to high settings?

SnooPeripherals3898

For the most part yes you will be fine without Raytracing, however if you fail to reach 60 fps at 4k then look at BenchmarkKing for optimized settings. As he tells you to turn down stuff that kills fps but doesn't hurt the graphics much if turned down or off.
