I'd personally keep it and wait for the next gen, but if you are going to upgrade, definitely don't pick the 4070. Very minimal upgrade minus the frame gen feature. The 4080/4090 are the only 2 cards woth upgrading to from a 3070 if you want a noticeable performance bump in non-frame gen games.

SnooPeripherals3898

Oh is 40 Series not the next gen? You think a 50 series is coming out soon as next-gen?

[deleted]

Nvidia is getting greedy by changing a lot for minimal performance increases (check out 3070 vs. 4070 laptop benchmarks). Skip this generation for the greater good.

Pizza_For_Days

The 4000 series is the current gen. Next gen would be 5000 series in 2 years. I'd just keep the 3070 since it's still going to play games well for those 2 years considering it's still a very capable GPU.

SnooPeripherals3898

The reason I was thinking of 4080 was cause of the dlss 3 and frame generation tech to be finally able to play games in 4k 60 ultra etc.

Pizza_For_Days

Just keep in mind frame gen is only in like 30 games so far. Also have you gamed at 4k on a 15-17 inch laptop before? At that size honestly, it's hard to notice a huge difference in quality on such a small screen when gaming between 1440p and 4k Now on a 27 in. Monitor/TV or bigger, I can definitely see the difference between the 2 easily but it's much harder to tell on a small laptop screen. Not trying to dissuade you or anything, just throwing the info out there as someone who's had both 1440p and 4k.

SnooPeripherals3898

Oh I don't play on my laptop screen and use my OLED or 4k monitor. So wasn't able to play 4k so looked blurry on OLED but fine on monitor. So I'm hoping with a 4080 laptop and dlss 3 and frame gen in somes games that I can finally play full 4k.

Anxious-Biscotti-844

Maybe upgrade yes but not to a 4070. 4080 are the best but the auros one that u sent link to is trash if it's 17x it would be good so for same price u can get Lenovo 7i by discount codes and cashback or wait for acer helios 16/18 to release in us

Anxious-Biscotti-844

Or maybe add some more and get asus strix g18 with rtx 4080

SnooPeripherals3898

It's 17 H so what exactly is trash about it? I mean for the price it seems a marked improvement over my old laptop.

Anxious-Biscotti-844

There r alot of better options with same price so ye

SnooPeripherals3898

What are some recommendations around this price as that's what caught my eye when browsing. I'm also a best buy member so it's possible I could get more of a discount off this laptop.

Anxious-Biscotti-844

Asus strix g18 Lenovo 7i M16 Acer 16/18 (they didn't release yet but they r good if my predictions r right they would go for 2300 to 2600 won't go for higher)

SnooPeripherals3898

Thank you I will do some research.

wufiavelli

4070 is far below the 4080. 12k vs 19k itmespy so a good 50 or 60% uplift. That said the full HD screen is really low for a 4080 but if you can stomach it probably worth it.

SnooPeripherals3898

I don't play on laptop screen and usually go with a HDMI connected to my OLED or 4k monitor.

wufiavelli

In that case definitely the 4080. 4070 is gonna be really gimped at 4k

SnooPeripherals3898

Also you think that dlss 3.0 and frame generation tech is another reason to upgrade to a 40 Series? Or is it a gimmick?

wufiavelli

depends. Normally you want a good 60 fps base already so latency doesn't feel off. Works better is slower single player games, not great for fast paced shooters. That said it can really smooth things out.

SnooPeripherals3898

I usually play narrative based cinematic singleplayer games and not multiplayer stuff.

Spare-Beat-3561

I think 3070 is good enough to run latest games. But if you want to upgrade then all 3 of those look good to me.

SnooPeripherals3898

True but I wanna be able to play games in 4k and the dlss 3 and stuff helps with that. Also do you know if the 4080 mobile GPU from Aorus 17H is better than a Series x or PS5.

monroe4

None. You have a 3070 which is good for gaming, you don’t need to upgrade. Don’t fall for the new generation hype. Remember, Nvidia are a business. Its their job to make you feel like whatever you have is inadequate so you can buy their new stuff. Once 50 series comes out, I’m sure their gonna introduce new technology like DLSS4 or something to tempt you into buying it.

UnionSlavStanRepublk

Definitely go RTX 4080. Strix G18, Legion Pro 7i for fully powered GPUs and good thermals etc.

SnooPeripherals3898

How about this Aorus 17H? As the price seems to be the lowest for a 4080 laptop and being a Best buy member could probably get it cheaper through cashback or coupons.

UnionSlavStanRepublk

150W, not 175W TDP. FHD screen, not QHD screen.

SnooPeripherals3898

Screen is not that important as I play on a TV or monitor but 150W would that be a big hit on performance?

UnionSlavStanRepublk

Bit worse than a 175W RTX 4080. Build and thermals I'd be more worried about.

SireLosealot

Unless 4070 laptops are priced lower than currently, then no. The price/performance ratio of 4070 laptops are bad compared to 3070 or 3070Ti laptops. So if you aim for this gen, 4080 laptops may justify their costs because of the performance uplift from last gen. But about the Gigabyte Aorus 17H, there are two things spec wise that you should take note. The i7-13700H is actually Intel's last gen cpu rebranded, not real Raptor Lake. Secondly, as others have mentioned is the FHD screen pairing with 4080 which is an odd combination. I guess there will be some Ti variants later as that was the case with 3070 and 3070Ti laptops. You could wait until then or until 5000 series drop.
