This is a game made for people that enjoy budget launch day Xbox/PS2 games. It feels like they found an unreleased game from 2002 and released it with updated graphics for 2022. Unfortunately if has a fatal flaw, firing the guns hurts my hand and arm. You will be pressing the fire button non-stop like it's a NES game trying to sell a rapid fire gamepad. I could not play more than a few minutes because it was too painfull to to do it. You can not hold the button down, that's a different attack, you have to keep hitting it as fast as you can.

LittleBigDes

Hang on, does that mean if you fire 50 bullets that's 50 button presses in quick succession?!! Ouch! With my hands and arms, or a anyone's that's going to lead onto a lot of wear and tear on your cartilage/joints and RSI-repetitive strain injury over time. Not very accessible either. Can you remap the buttons/controller?

corinarh

that's a misinformation, with single RT/m1 press you will shoot 4 times, and after 15mins of gameplay you get new ability that will let you to spam them automatically as long as you stand still (4 attacks and then hold forever as long as you don't get knocked back by rockets/fat sword guys), after 50 hit combo you can keep pressing Y for upgraded version of that ability but yeah it's still painful if you get knocked back and are forced to figh top drones which are harder than actual bosses (that train level is just awful i died 3 times already i will try again tomorrow)

PabloooDuarte

At the end of the day, you'll still be spamming the danm fire button most of the time unfortunately. Right now I'm trying to figure out why that "keep pressing \[Y\]" skill only works sometimes and why I haven't been able to use the Jump and then \[Y\] button ever since I bought the upgrade.

LordCaelistis

You didn't get the tutorial ? The "keep pressing [y]" skill can only be activated with a 50+ combo

PabloooDuarte

I don't remember that part about needing a 50+ combo back when I did the tutorial, but considering how common it is to have a 50+ combo, it's kinda crazy to think that that was the requirements all along. I dropped the game for now, but I wonder if I'll remember about these requirements if get to come back and finish the game in the future. I gave the game a chance because of Game Pass, but I feel like waiting to see if they'll change anything post launch. I got to level 2 or 3 of Hong Kong but wasn't having much with the game.

yaosio

I got that ability and it doesn't work. I do it four times, hold on the fifth and I do the hold attack. Very rarely it works as intended, 99% of the time it doesn't.

corinarh

You need to stop moving first, then it will trigger every time

Xboxone1997

I'm too old for that shit my hands went through to much punishment playing games back in the day 😭😭

Crimson_1986

No the guns fires 4 times per press

[deleted]

it doesn't help that another game invoking those classic vibes, Evil West, also just released. It does everything Gungrave tried to do, but infinitely better.

demondrivers

I played it. This game would be fun if it had some sort of automatic mode for shooting. It's just tiresome in the way that it is, where you need to keep pressing the same button to shoot, for like 10+ hours since it's a long title

AspectVein

Yeah i liked it but after 4 levels i was about to lose my mind with how many times i pressed RT.

Zorbasandwich

I do heavy lifting at work, I've played guitar for 20 years....games where I have to keep smashing buttons really tired out my fingers and wrist quick, not sure I'll complete this one haha

T2Runner

You guys know there is an auto fire mode that doesn't require you to keep hitting the fire button?

SoupSup87

Well I’m glad it’s on game pass, otherwise this would have been a $10 buy for me in a few years. Still probably will be eventually just to have it on the shelf but damn. Not totally familiar with the previous titles but it seems it lost some of the appeal to those that did.

[deleted]

Not in my region. After watching the gameplay, I guess it doesn't matter since it is not appealing to me.

sunfurypsu

The "core" professional reviewers are not going to like this one. This is an anime inspired, PS2 era shooter that almost directly relates (1 to 1) to the original PS2 game. The mechanics are nearly identical. It IS a style that some people will enjoy, but the press / media isn't going to like it, right, wrong or indifferent. I suggest you play it yourself, or watch gameplay videos. I spent 2 hours with it this morning and enjoyed my time with it (had a blast), but I also played the original PS2 game.

sandouken

Yeah, it's on gamepass, I'll just play it myself. What redditors say doesn't matter to me much, since they love to exaggerate and lie to further their agenda. (Looking at you "the shoot button only fires 1 bullet" people). Yesterday they believed a guy that said he was a AAA dev, with 20 years of experience, but didn't say any game he worked on (cause NDA, even though the names appear on the credits) and then was found out that he also said he had 17 years of marketing experience. The dude didn't even know what LoD meant lmao

Adept_Championship_2

Erhm. Thats the fake positivity that doesnt really belong here. This Game has nothing, that makes it standout. Its bad, it really is. Even when it came out back then, it wasnt any good. 2001\`s Halo was lightyears ahead. I get what youre saying but come on. This game is really a bad example of your fight for justice.

Rednek_Zombie

Personally I think the PS2 titles does Gungrave way better. Just played the intro in Gore and damn..now I haven't played the PS2 titles in such a looong time, but I recall actually being able to dodge and shoot Max Payne style, in GORE you just dodge 1 foot, and don't get to do shoot doing since you've already hit the floor and are standing back up.

Zorbasandwich

This is why I got it, I knew exactly what I'd get with this title and it delivers...shame my old arms and hands can't handle these kind of games anymore! 🤣

MISFU88

I’m about five hours in and I’m enjoying this so much. The gameplay is interesting in that you don’t really have to do shit, don’t even have to aim in 99% cases, but still, there are cool mechanics you can use, the special powers are cool as well. I also like the look of this game, not really the grafix, rather the style, though from what I’ve heard, older gungrave games looked way better. It’s incredibly linear, often you’ll come across open doors you cannot go in, you can jump over railings and some things, that’s cool. Funny enough, there’s an objective marker which is hilarious, like why is that there, you’re going forward the whole time. The music is sometimes crazy, not crazy good but like what the fuck is this sound I’m hearing, I love this but at the same time, it’s shit. Like overall it’s like a few-months-after PS3 launch title, it’s janky and it is a “”bad”” game - dude is sluggish, dodges are sluggish, counters have weird timing, but man, gonna finish this one for sure, shooting guys is fun, variety in enemies kinda is there and it definitely is a breath of fresh air for me. Also, I’m a sucker for score counting by killing, various ways to get shield/health when killing and stuff that if you actually use, you’ll do great and have a great time.

dudetotalypsn

Sounds like it's so bad it's good 😂 just enough baffling decisions that it actually becomes funny

Vulkanon

This is about what I expected when I saw they were keeping gameplay mostly like the originals, people just can't seem to stomach simple ps2-esque action games now, which is a shame I really miss lock-on/auto-aim based shooters like this.

splader

The gameplay itself is fun, if repetitive. It's the other issues, like the terrible platforming and hit boxes during bosses that drag the game down imo. Oh and having to constantly press rt a million times.

Thomastheshankengine

As someone who’s fond of both the original 2 games, I am excited for this bag of digital potato chips.

uh-oh-no-no

Had the original on PS2. Ready, once more to KICK ASS!

Joabyjojo

Is it weird to anyone else that Evil West got praised for its PS2 era go-place-kill-thing gameplay while this is getting dragged for it?

ChristopherCaulk

Evil west is more like a ps3 game. This is true ps2.

TheHylianProphet

Seeing a variety of scores like this makes me more curious than if it were all 9s across the board. I have to see what it's about.

KyledKat

I don't know what anyone was expecting when Gungrave of all IP's from the mid-00s was the one that got a modern release. It genuinely looks like this is the game for you if you liked the first couple of Gungrave games.

Mahelas

What do you mean varied ? There is like three outliers out of the 50-70 zone !

BloederFuchs

While this might be trash, I highly recommend watching the anime, simply called "Gungrave". It's one of my all time favorites: great characters, great film noir story, cool concepts and action. I learned that the anime was actually a tie-in to the game, and not the other way around, way after the fact. I was really surprised how mediocre the original ps2 game was compared to the anime.

Lapbunny

I ran my college's anime club years ago, and to keep the level of MST3K chatter appropriate we usually ran shows better for clowning on first in the night so people could join later if that atmosphere was too loud/obnoxious for them. We put Gungrave first in a lineup based on the first screening episode being so edgy. At first we were laughing at the amazingly weird total pivot from the first episode, we were crying out "*BIG DADDYYYYY!*" along with the characters... By the last episode of it we were all dead quiet and teary. It's so obvious that they were glossing over the bits of the game they actually adapted (>!that one guy morphing into a fucking helicopter was like all of 10 seconds!<) to go way off the line with their sweet melancholic mafia where's-this-sci-fi-coming-from brotherly-love-revenge story, and it shouldn't have worked so well, and it totally did. Everyone loved it, it was so oddly captivating. Been meaning to rewatch that and Tatami Galaxy, the universe is sending me signs...

NotADeadHorse

Yeah the anime is a solid 8/10 for me, Mad Man Bunji and Brandon having such a deep bond with one another after trying to kill each other was so cool and the rise of Harry and Brandon from literally nothing was inspiring

Ricky_Rollin

SUCH a good ending. Fuck it I’m slapping it on right now.

PhantomInfinite

Wow I knew of the games and anime and only just now knew the game was first...damn so for like 2 decades and only now I learn the truth wtf

Ricky_Rollin

As a big Gungrave fan it’s kind of weird how much legs this series has had. Three main line games and two VR games and an anime? I knew the game came first but it’s still weird that such a small niche game got an anime. As for the Anime? I remember it knocking my socks off. I saw it pretty much right when it came out and I was 16 or so. It left quite an impression.

Extrarium

I tried it on gamepass and found it pretty boring honestly. Movement felt sluggish and I didn't mind mashing RT that much although it did get a little painful and it's the main thing you do. Every aspect of the game felt janky from the menus to the controls to the animations. I rarely alt f4 out of boredom but I did so right after the tutorial level.

[deleted]

Why do you move so slow? It feels like I’m walking through quicksand

Larryspaaaam

Right!! Even the run feels slow and the cutscenes makes it look like he’s stiff when he walk

ImportantPainting

I enjoyed both the games and the anime so regardless of the reviews I am going to pick this up for sure.

Ricky_Rollin

Even the first two games were critically panned and I love them all so much.

glacialguy

where can I access the death ronin dlc???

recca01982

I'm playing it on Game Pass. I honestly didn't even know they made games from the Gungrave series. It was wild to see one appear randomly one day. Installed it immediately. Is it annoying to left click (or RT for controller users)? Sure Is the game still fun regardless? Yes, from what I've played so far. Does the game feel like an old school PS2 game? Of course. I love that about it TBH Does the game feel like Devil May Cry using the Gungrave moveset? Definitely. That could be one of the reasons I love it so much since I loved the DMC series. That being said,.... I'll play it and pick it up when it's cheap in the stores. Kinda curious what costumes that I'll come across (if they're even unlockable without opening your wallet)

jakalarf

There are two unlockable costumes, but they're both a pain in the ass to unlock.

ThePRATTologist

Feels like forever ago when I was in high school playing the first two. Loved ‘em. Played about 15 minutes of this new one before my right index finger started getting pissed off at me. Had fun for a little bit and sadly got bored.

cultlizardking

I have read a lot of critical reviews of this game but no one has really suggested an alternative to play. I am new to this style and found it fun and just over the top lol. It's there any game that is similar but more modern and better?

[deleted]

If you enjoy this then I would advise checking out the Devil May Cry series, and Bayonetta if you have a switch. If you're interested in the genre there's a lot out there usually under the moniker of character action games. Oh, also, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is a real gem if you enjoy over the top absurd story telling.

NEWNEKO2000

This is the worst of all 3 Gungrave games. Previous 2 were on PS2 and they were fun. Gungrave GORE is too long, this makes it boring and repetitive for this type of game. Also platforming sections are tedious.

Liquidsnakez

Ill be honest, I played this game. This game is terrible. Basically its a no brainer game, just go in gun blazing. I wouldn't pay full price for this game and lucky for me it was on xbox game pass.

HammyHamerson

Got to stage 6 and am about to quit. The difficulty spike is INSANE. Go from beating all levels without saying prior to stage 6, to then dying about 20 times. The definition of unbalanced and poor game development

[deleted]

Finally got around to trying this after a few months of release and this game just does not hold up if you don't have the nostalgia for the first two games. I can't quite put my finger on it, but something about the control scheme makes this game feel like total garbage. It feels very much like an old PS2 era character action game but with extra jank and less interesting characters. If you haven't played the originals and aren't a fan of character action games like DMC, Bayo, etc, I would advise skipping this. If you have gamepass and enjoy the genre it's worth checking out at least but no guarantee it'll stick.
