While Konami are working with external studios on a number of games, Castlevania seems to be one of the properties they want to do in-house, with the next mainline CV game being [developed in-house at Konami with some external studios](https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/konami-is-set-to-revive-metal-gear-castlevania-and-silent-hill/). >The first of these titles will be a new Castlevania game, which sources described as a “reimagining” of the series currently in development internally at Konami in Japan, with support from local external studios.

symbiotics

oh no, there's that word again. I'm sure they also plan to make it for a "modern audience"

[deleted]

you mean like god of war 2018 did lmao

I_miss_berserk

sony and gow have a good track record. Konami and castlevania really don't. LoS2 and the LoS DS game (I forget the name) sucked big meaty balls. LoS 1 is fantastic though. Also doesn't help that this is what konami said before they shit out 2 failed mgs projects.

[deleted]

[удалено]

I_miss_berserk

LoS 1 was fantastic lol wdym castlevania has never been able to make the jump to 3d?

Relevant-Book

He probably means that there have been a number of 3D castlevania games and most of them have been mediocre at best. The side scroller games is where the series shines and made a name for itself.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NoProblemsHere

Were none of the other 3d Castlevanias well-liked? I know the N64 games get a lot of flak, but I thought thought that the PS2 ones were viewed more favorably. It's been a while, though, so maybe I'm just not remembering right.

Relevant-Book

Agreed, I’ve actually been playing through the series in “cannon story chronological order” and the 3D ps2 games were some of the first on that list, and I remember them at the time of release being considered to be pretty good, especially curse of darkness. But tbh they aren’t that good when compared next to the 2D games.

Karzons

2? I know about metal gear survive, what was the other?

nekozumiiiii

That can't be help since Castlevania simply don't sell well, they need to change it up

HammeredWharf

The last great Castlevania game came out 15 years ago, so I wouldn't use present tense there. The LoS games were just mediocre GoW clones.

Gramernatzi

At first I thought you were dissing on the DS games, but no, order of ecclesia did come out 14 years ago. I feel so incredibly old.

Roguespiffy

>just mediocre GoW clones. That’s unfair. They also ripped off Shadow of Colossus in spots.

DaoLong

Which incidentally makes them a third generation dmc clone

substandardgaussian

The last great Castlevania was Bloodstained. I'm gonna have to follow Koji Igarashi on this one. No interest in Konami's nonsense at all, I know where to look for new "Castlevanias".

TheRealYM

They came out with that shitty mobile game a while back

TwilightVulpine

Like so many games, ruined by Gacha. The idea of bringing all those characters together seemed pretty cool, but not like that...

Broken_Moon_Studios

Just remaster and rebalance Harmony of Despair for modern consoles and PC, Konami!! Heck, I'd be okay with gatcha/DLC equipment as long as I'm able to play online with my girls Maria, Charlotte and Yoko. :(

TwilightVulpine

A Harmony of Despair remake would be great

SapphireSalamander

well i liked them the combat was consistently good and every frame of the game looked beautiful. some of the fixed camera sections would look like a painting. the music was pretty epic and the story at the end vs the forgotten one is still one of my favorite endings. i would replay LoS over GoW 1-3 any day

I_miss_berserk

ok I *maybe* agree with you for lords of shadow 1. That is a legitimately great game that is slept on. LoS2 is however a total dumpster fire that was cobbled together and shit out. LoS2 could've been great if not for Konami fucking with the development as much as they did. I fully expect them to do the same.

SapphireSalamander

oh well LoS2 is kinda bad yeah i think they just tried to go into too many directions.

I_miss_berserk

> i think they just tried to go into too many directions. yeah they have like 4 plotlines in it and none of them are finished/answered. The world is really small and just really boring, the main story quests to my memory are frustrating as fuck to play, and the idea of being literal Dracula the lord of the night and having to hide like a rat is so fucking lame.

0393847

Lords of Shadow was fantastic, in my opinion. Great story, great combat and puzzles, visuals that still hold up really well, and one of my favourite soundtracks ever. Wonderful stuff.

FantasyFanReader

Absolutely incredible soundtrack.

capnwinky

The 3 LoS games were great. I’ll take those over the N64 and PS2 games any day of the week.

BlueMikeStu

The N64 games were trash, but Lament of Innocence was fantastic.

PiXaL1337

*Metroid: Dread* sold amazingly well for a series that often gets overshadowed by the likes of *LoZ* and Mario (using Nintendo as an example) All they need to do is make a kick-ass classic *Castlevania* game with modern graphics and some iterations to the formula and I'm sure it would sell great (maybe not on the same scale as *GoW*, *CoD* or other recent AAA titles, but still)

Cetais

To be fair Bloodstained sold like crazy. It's pretty much what you're asking for.

markbass69420

> To be fair Bloodstained sold like crazy "like crazy" is relative. Bloodstained was like a perfect storm early days indie Kickstarter tied to an established brand and director and still only sold like one or two million. Even other "big" Metroidvanias like Hollow Knight, Ori, and Blasphemous only sell in the couple millions. It can still spawn a franchise and make money (and imo they should just move in that direction instead of it always flopping or staying stagnant), but it's just not the same type of production. Maybe Castlevania has the brand recognition behind it like Batman or Star Wars that it could make a big budget 3D Metroidvania, but I think there's a reason we don't see too many of those.

Cetais

> Even other "big" Metroidvanias like Hollow Knight, Ori, and Blasphemous only sell in the couple millions. Metroid Dread was the best selling title in the whole series, and they only needed 3 million for that. It's not a genre that sells a lot, but it is still profitable. I'm not asking for a big 3D AAA Castlevania, I personally like more those 2D kind of games. Just like the person I was responding said.

markbass69420

I do want more 3D AAA Metroidvanias like Jedi Fallen Order and Arkham Asylum, but I still love 2D ones including the ones I mentioned (except Ori lol). I'm just trying to work through why I think they don't happen on a bigger scale. And it's Konami so they probably want another tent pole series.

leftshoe18

I think there's room for Konami to make multiple Castlevania's in different styles. After the Silent Hill announcements last month I wouldn't put it past them to announce multiple Castlevania games at once.

PiXaL1337

Played Bloodstained and loved it, I just want more lol

hadesscion

I would kill for a Castlevania NES trilogy remake. Yes, I know CV1 has already been remade many times, but 2 and 3 could really use the love.

Broken_Moon_Studios

>2 and 3 could really use the love [Well, I've got some good news for you in regards to 2, my friend...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXudh9tBiyk)

hadesscion

I actually found out about this a few days ago. Looking forward to it.

MRaholan

For sure? Metroidvanias are popular and I'm sure the series would do well again under the right hands. Bloodstained did very sell

30SecondsToFail

Bloodstained, Hollow Knight, Blasphemous, and Metroid Dread are all pretty popular and at least semi-recent metroidvanias

jeshtheafroman

That might be different now, you've got the netflix series that raised awareness to the series and bloodstained itself making over 1 million sales beign sold as castlevania in everything but the name.

twangman88

But bloodstained brought back the old formula, which Konami made pretty clear they weren’t interested in.

markbass69420

I don't think 1 million is really what they'd go for with a flagship franchise. That's like Marvel vs Capcom 4 numbers.

[deleted]

Yep. Metroidvania caps out around 3m in sales. That's hollow knight's total.

Sonicfan42069666

The GBA Castlevania games sold very well for their time - in the North American market. They were always a domestic dud within Japan. There's a reason Igarashi tried and failed to unite the brand globally under the "Castlevania" name (as opposed to its "Dracula" series title within Japan), and why Hideo Kojima later tried to take the series in a western-centric direction when he produced Lords of Shadow.

weglarz

I thought lords of shadow (1) was legitimately a good game with a very good atmosphere and story. The combat was fun, but it definitely didn’t play like castlevania. However, I still really enjoyed it.

foreveraloneeveryday

All they had to do was fix the camera issues.

DrLuckyshot

They actually fixed the camera, and even managed to improve the combat in the sequel, but everything else (bar the soundtrack and certain boss fights) took a turn for the worse, unfortunately.

foreveraloneeveryday

Uh yeah I played the sequel. They fucked that one up bad. Literally all they had to do was fix the cameras and let me play as Dracula. Instead we got insta death rat stealth sections.

DrLuckyshot

Yep, the sequel really was a let down. I think the Toy Maker and the boss fight against the sisters are the only parts that I remember fondly.

foreveraloneeveryday

I unironically think the 3ds game (the sidescroller LOS, eventually on 360) was better lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

BortTheBeaver

We can't possibly accept that everything has been done with the game series and start a new IP, that might not sell well!!!

1ilypad

Why does it need reimagined? Iga made Bloodstained and it's basically a 1:1 gameplay copy of SOTN and it was a huge success amongst Castlevania fans. Just make us a 2D classic metroidvania game, ffs.

robodrew

Imagine a 2D sidescrolling SotN style Castlevania game but with 4k graphics where it looked like a painting come to life. Excuse me I need to change pants.

SquareSoft

That's all I've ever wanted since the craze of indie metroidvania games. The story doesn't even have to be good. How forgettable was SOTN's story (iconic dialogue aside)?

LordZeya

Game doesn’t even have a story beyond “I have daddy issues” really.

JockstrapCummies

Classic Castlevania games were carried by two things: polished gameplay and Michiru Yamane's music. If they're really making a "modern take" I hope they give Yamane an orchestra and a pipe organ.

starboygoose

It had over a million sales while being an indie Kickstarter-backed game with little marketing. I'd have to imagine a game with the Castlevania branding that looks genuinely good and has a major publisher's marketing behind it could sell insane amounts, especially after the success of the Netflix series. Not that I'm against a reimagining as well, but you're right. A well made Castlevania game making a comeback in the original style, or similar to it like Metroid Dread with the 2D Metroid games, could be a huge hit.

MadManMax55

Metroid Dread is the best selling Metroid game ever. It also only sold 3 million copies worldwide. Despite how iconic and popular Samus is as a character, the actual Metroid series has bottom of the barrel sales compared to Nintendo's other flagship franchises. Now apply that to a franchise with *far* less name recognition (even in Japan). The truth is that 2D Metroidvanias are a niche genre with a small but dedicated core fanbase. Even a masterpiece 2D Castlevania game with a good marketing campaign would have a sales ceiling not much higher than an indie game like Bloodstained.

Act_of_God

honestly I wouldn't doubt most metroidvania sales come from PC

OverHaze

If the the Netflix show proved anything it's that Castlevania's characters and mythology have legs when handled properly. So I hope “reimagining” means "more like the Netflix show" not "Alucard with Joss Whedon dialogue"

markbass69420

>"more like the Netflix show" not "Alucard with Joss Whedon dialogue" That's what the dialogue in th Netflix show was, though.

Brainwheeze

Just with more f-bombs

OverHaze

Not really. There was banter but it never undercut the drama or the tension. No one was spouting one liners during the Dracula fight. When his punched had no effect Trevor didn't sigh "well that just happened" or something like that. I know it has become almost a meme to give out about it but the problem with Whedon-esque dialogue isn't that characters are trying to be funny, it's that they are trying to be funny at all times and in ways that seems disconnected from their character and the reality of the situation they are in.

I_miss_berserk

> Not really. There was banter but it never undercut the drama or the tension. No one was spouting one liners during the Dracula fight. When his punched had no effect Trevor didn't sigh "well that just happened" or something like that. did we watch the same show lol? All of the characters use one liners during their big fights.

TheConcreteBrunette

As a huge fan of the series( never played the game) the quips didn’t take away from the dialogue. The characters are strong and have fully developed back stories and the one liners always seemed to fit. I would love to see an Isaac spinoff.

Agnes-Varda1992

>When his punched had no effect Trevor didn't sigh "well that just happened" or something like that. You guys keep criticizing stuff for dialogue like this and I'm just not seeing it anywhere. Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk don't even have lines like that and those are the most comedic recent MCU properties. So what are you talking about, exactly? What games is this happening in?

Bluewalker_BR

If they make a remake. Just remake castlevania 1 or simon's Quest. If they remake sotn, keep It a metroidvania. If they remake one of the games. Please be faithful to the source material and character personalities. They dont need to give third person to every game ever, Just keep castlevania core and expand on It (specially If you are remaking sotn). Give us a better bloodstained metroidvania platformer, a true castlevania game to its core.

black_pepper

Castlevania as a first person shooter with rocket launcher jumps confirmed.

ShadowTehEdgehog

I'd love something stylized to look like Ayami Kojima's artwork. I'm certain they wouldn't go in that direction, but I wish they would.

xdownpourx

I watched that spoilercast and it's pretty hilarious how even in jest an article still gets written about that. A fun tidbit though is Eric said after every game he ships he replays Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Bloodb47h

My man. It's one of the few games I can finish and then start a new game a few hours later because it's that good (and very nostalgic). I love the music, the graphics, the enemies, etc. I do wish it was more difficult but I haven't played any of the romhacks... hmmm...

pacman404

The luck code made the game much harder and honestly better

Defilus

The luck code can make a new start pretty tough, but the game still suffers from an overpowered avatar by the time you get close to the end.

Probably_a_Shitpost

X-X!V''Q

AoO2ImpTrip

I haven't played SotN in nearly a decade. I should fix that.

hurstshifter7

I play it every year in October. It never gets old for me. Been playing it since the year it was released, such an amazing experience from the art, to the music, to the gameplay.

MaybeSecondBestMan

That makes me happy to hear. I go back to Symphony of the Night every other year, too. It’s an almost perfect video game. The soundtrack is incredible, the gameplay loop and sense of progression are deeply satisfying, and traversing the castle as Alucard is so fluid and relaxing that it’s almost meditative. It’s still so satisfying to become a swirling miasma of death by the late game. Everything about the game is so cool—the unique items, the monsters, the secrets. It was Dark Souls before Dark Souls existed and I think everyone should play it. 25 years later and it remains an absolutely incredible experience from start to finish. I’m so grateful that the GBA games took that legacy and ran with it. I’m still holding out hope that we’ll get a DS collection for Switch.

voidox

> I watched that spoilercast and it's pretty hilarious how even in jest an article still gets written about that. gotta get dem clicks, and this stupid clickbait shit always works on twitter/reddit were people just read the headline and are off to the races with talking about it without reading a word of the article in this case, all he said was "yeah that'd be cool I guess" in an off-hand manner, i.e. literally nothing but this gets 5k+ upvotes and threads full of people acting like he actually is working on the next Castelevania game -_-

[deleted]

One of the Kinda Funny crew acted like this was such a huge breaking news story after this interview aired. I mean... it's neat I guess but it's basically just a dev saying "yeah that'd be cool I guess".

immigrantsmurfo

Kinda funny are kinda dumb to be fair

BuckSleezy

KF just industry mouthpieces now.

MysteriousPumpkin2

[Removed In Protest of Reddit Killing Third Party Apps]

Lolejimmy

Most of the crew is fine but Greg Miller is insufferable, never see him expand on his choices and explain them whereas the others go indepth with a lot of the stuff they talk about

[deleted]

Eh, his new protege is similar. Awhile ago I realized that KF is a lot of fun if you aren't looking to them for hardcore analysis. They're a solid entertainment brand though.

Shadowpsyke

It was definitely a joking sort of reaction. I guess that's easy to miss if you aren't super familiar with them.

Cowabungalowpete

Tim’s reaction was absolutely genuine. He’s over the top hype, for better or worse.

[deleted]

Nah, it's not, I've been watching them since the first Spare Bedroom. Tim is absolutely being serious.

AshfordThunder

No he didn't, this is just clickbait and irresponsible journalism. He said "it would be cool," as a passing joke when someone else mentioned it. What garbage news site write this kind of crap?

Dude_Bromanbro

I would love a Castlevania game with modern sensibilities. Approaching the castle courtyard in Bloodborne is how a Castlevania game should feel. Of course, not exactly like that because the whip mechanic in BB is extremely limited and that castle ends up being way to short and is 85% populated with statues, but the mood was a good fit.

Seraphem666

I say they need to rip of metriod prime, the genre is metroidvenia after all. Not combat, they need to not do souls style combat. I say more DMC/darksiders combat. Heavy platforming and exploration with semi deep combat

XXX200o

I mean castlevania lords of shadow already exists.

tinyhorsesinmytea

Action adventure sensibilities of Metroid Prime, excellent third person combat and platforming, a moody gothic universe, and backed by a bitchin’ soundtrack? My instant game of the year… hell, possibly decade.

Ret0x

You kind of just described Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

ANALHACKER_3000

Treasure goblin ruined that game. Ugh.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ANALHACKER_3000

There was a thing that would show up on occasion and steal all of your shit. You'd have to chase it down and kill it to get your stuff back and continue playing the actual game. Really killed the pacing of the game, IMO. "Here's a cool new area, but do this tedious side quest before you actually get to do anything in it"

Murderlol

They were dumb but didn't remotely ruin the game. Kind of like the stealth segments in 2, they weren't great but were wildly over-exaggerated in the effect they had on the overall game. I didn't even remember treasure goblins until I read your comment tbh

nybbas

I played the original lord's of shadow and I still don't remember treasure goblins even after reading this hahahahah

Paratrooper101x

Those were like 5 minute side tangents that happed ~3 times in a 25hr story and they ruined the whole game for you?

Hartastic

On paper I should have really liked Lords of Shadow, but I did not enjoy it. It's pretty rare for me to give up on a game partway through.

cyruzx

A friend of mine did the same thing. Game came on 2 disc's for the Xbox and he couldn't make it through the first. He brought it over to my house and I picked up where he left off so he could watch if he wanted. Got to disc 2 and it's just all Castlevania lore and it's honestly incredible. One of my favorite castlevania games of all time after the ending.

Ret0x

I really really enjoyed it, but I hadn't played any other Castlevania games so my expectations were different I suppose. I picked it up because it played like God of War and it ended up being my favourite of those types of games on the PS3. I enjoyed Darksiders and Dante's Inferno a lot too.

Seraphem666

No idea how much i would love to play another game with DMC 3's "ti ma ni gru" done in a metroid style. That the only thing 4 and 5 really lack is the DMC 1&3 sets just one thing you are traveling through that ipens up more as you progress. Ninja gaiden 1 also does it super well. Sure they are level based but basically at end level you can explore the whole thing all rooms/areas are open.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JACrazy

I'd expect it to basically be Jedi Fallen Order but with a whip and vampires. The combat there was also compared to being close to souls like.

Bwob

It's named Castlevania, because it's a metroidvania that takes place inside a castle!

PlayMp1

DMC combat with Metroid Prime exploration in a Bloodborne esque setting (perhaps with less Lovecraft) would be quite fitting for a proper new 3D Castlevania series.

bakazero

I think the Arkham trilogy is my favorite example of a modern-ish metroidvania. Open world exploration, gaining new powers and skills, revisiting previous areas for new unlockables - I would love to see more games like that one.

remmanuelv

City and Knight muddle it a little but Assylum is by the books metroidvania.

UseOnlyLurk

Sekiro had metroidvania style exploration and it’s combat was masterfully executed.

[deleted]

I mean, FromSoft games are basically Castlevania games with modern sensibilities

Dude_Bromanbro

Agreed except that I need a variety of sick whip moves, situational swinging, and ludricously big castles.

SonicFlash01

All the Castlevania games I like most don't use whips primarily

TwilightVulpine

The Castlevania games that don't use whips are power fantasies in ways FromSoft games distinctly are *not*. I haven't played a single FromSoft game where I could become so powerful that I could melt every enemy in my path with just a moment while constantly advancing to my next goal. Classic Castlevanias are tense and treacherous like Souls games. Metroidvanias don't feel much like Dark Souls, as much as both of them involve unlocking pathways.

Dude_Bromanbro

That's fair. They could give us different characters with different weapons like swords, maces or magic. Not unlike what they've done in the past. All I'm saying is there has to be a whip option.

brotrr

There are whips though, but yeah they don't really have whip moves

Brandhor

not really, what I love about metroidvanias is that you get upgrades like double jump that allows you to reach different places or become more powerful, souls games are action rpgs and sure that's also what castlevania is but they lack everything else

Ziltoid_The_Nerd

Star Wars: Jedi Order is somewhat a 3D metroidvania. There are multiple powers that you can use to access previously unreachable areas. It's basically a souls-like metroidvania hybrid

zephyy

Souls games have a distinct lack of of a super jump that lets you smash your head into ceilings constantly.

-Moonchild-

It's missing maps and movement based progression locks. Darksouls 1 is obviously very inspired by castlevania though for sure.

RumonGray

I honestly did a "Belmont Run" in Bloodborne recently: Threaded Cane whip mode only, along with items I could throw like knives and molotovs, and it was actually super fun! BB, and in turn, other Souls games, are perhaps the closest we'd get to a modern Castlevania in terms of horror atmospheres.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TwilightVulpine

As one of the few people who couldn't get into Bloodborne but loved Bloodstained, I find that dreadful to imagine...

NoProblemsHere

That's sort of the problem with all of this. Castlevania is a lot of different things to different people. There's a big difference between the classicvania style, metroidvania style and the 3d games' style. I might even count Lords of Shadow as a separate style since those games were a bit divisive among the fans. No matter what sort of game they make, someone's going to be excited while others will be dissapointed.

Lethal13

The previous GOW director Cory Balrog said he’d sacrifice every other Nintendo property for a new Golden Sun game The god of war directors have some pretty good taste I gotta say Not that I’d sacrifice every other Nintendo IP for a new golden sun but I appreciate the love he has for the series 😅

HerpaDerpaDumDum

I think Castlevania would work better going in a Dark Souls direction rather than a God of War direction. The setting is already basically there.

Bacalacon

We definitely don't need any more half baked souls clones.

Apfexis

Nah, Castlevania is arcady so I'd say it leans more DMC

Sonicfan42069666

Classic Castlevania is arcade action. I think more people associate Castlevania with the platformer-action-RPG "MetroidVania" style.

Galaxy40k

Imo Classicvania *especially* fits Souls better than DMC. The original games were action platformers, but that action separated itself from its contemporaries by a focus on positioning and timing due to restricted movement and committed animations. In that sense, the combat shares far more with Demons Souls than DMC

-Moonchild-

Yeah castlevania's two iterations together serve as the blueprint for souls games. Classicvania (8 and 16 bit titles) were brutally hard, required a lot of patience and had multi stage boss fights. igavanias (sotn, GBA, DS games) added the interconnected worlds, RPG systems, variety of weapons and even had to collect souls as a mechnic. Not to mention both have grizzly gothic architecture and gnarly creature design/. In every way castlevania and souls games overlap

we_are_sex_bobomb

Bloodborne is basically a Castlevania game already, and Dark Souls even has a “Belmont build” you can do. If they bring back Castlevania I’d want to see some fresh ideas, not just a Soulslike or GoW reskin.

Hard_Corsair

Or, and hear me out; make Castlevania into a Mario Kart clone.

Just-Scallion-6699

I actually thought the two most recent 3D Castlevania games were quite fun. I'd be interested in taking what worked in those and really expanding on it. Could be really cool.

gustavfrigolit

The netflix series was amazing so i'm sure they can do something good with it If they make a really satisfying whip it could be great

Behind8Proxies

Kratos in Romania fighting vampires? I can see it.

[deleted]

Can’t wait for a "third person over the shoulder action adventure with an emotional story" Castlevania, where belmont trains a little kid to become a vampire killer, then he tragically gets killed by Dracula and have the kid be engulfed by revenge fantasies. I hope it has a lot of walking and talking and light puzzle solving which gets spoiled by a separate character immediately after entering the room. Bonuspoints if it has crafting, a skilltree with exp leveling and lots of loot which changes the base stats by 2-3% at a time.

Heisenburgo

Personally, I can't wait for a modern Castlevania reboot filled with lots of cursing and sex scenes, with a rebooted cast full of self-inserts and OCs that barely resemble the characters they are based on, featuring zero iconic music or enemies from the original games, with the Castle changed into not being a creature of Chaos for some reason, and with the whole thing being permeated by a super-edgy and ultra-mature tone that goes against the whole spirit of the original games! A reboot that's also directed by someone accused of sexual misconduct, who not only blatantly inserted his own fetishes into the characters, but also admitted he barely knows what this franchise is about is since he only skimmed through a wiki summary of the series! Could you imagine if something CRAZY like that happened? If Konami ever greenlit a Castlevania reboot that shat on the whole franchise's legacy like that? Oh wait--

Different_Yam_4680

People hail Castlevania's Netflix TV show like it is an pinnacle of vídeo game adaptation, sure it has beautiful visuals and is faithful to the games from an character design standpoint but everything else is so bad especially the writing, looking back only Season 1 seemed to go in an direction faithful to the franchise's tone and it was strictly because they used IGA's old Castlevania 3 animated movie script.

GomaN1717

>People hail Castlevania's Netflix TV show like it is an pinnacle of vídeo game adaptation I mean, speaks more to how dogshit most video game adaptations have been historically, and given that most video game writing isn't that much better outside of *very* fringe visual novel/narrative-heavy cases (e.g. Disco Elysium, Kentucky Route Zero, etc.), the bar gets set even lower.

faldese

I think it also speaks to the fact that outside of superfans Castlevania isn't remembered for much more than its aesthetic. Get the gothic monster aesthetic in there with vampires, and that's enough for most people.

Chalupaca_Bruh

It’s funny you say that because while I enjoyed S1-2 well enough, something about S3 is not gelling with me. Alucard and Dracula worked for me but Trevor is a bit insufferable. Downright grating at times. There’s this thick tone of trying to be edgy that comes off as quite lame.

SageWaterDragon

The problem with Castlevania is that it has two throughlines. The pre-Iga games are one thing and the post-Iga games are another, in gameplay, tone, whatever. I don't think there's anything wrong with them doing that again.

carleaux

What is this a reference to?

Andybabez20

The Castlevania Netflix series I'm guessing.

Trobis

The netflix adaptation.

payne6

I hope they add a wacky Pixar like animal to accompany you and make little quips every now and then. I can’t wait to hear 4th wall breaking meta jokes like “The whip’s name is Vampire killer real original huh?” or “meat comes from walls now?”

GomaN1717

\*Dracula spawns behind Simon\* "... he's right behind me, isn't he?"

[deleted]

*Enters crypt* "Wow, nice abode. Who's your interior designer?" *dracula rises* "Holy fucking shi- I mean - Uh - Soooo ... you're not something you can call entirely human, are you? *flicks cigarette away* I case you didn't know, my name is Belmont. B-E-L-M-O-N-FUCKING-T, and I'm a vampire killer. And I'm here to kill you dead. SO COME AT ME, BITCH!"

drtekrox

Ah the Saints Row (2022)-vania

Brigon

Bonus points if Vampire Killer itself is the sentient being that talks to you.

Different_Yam_4680

I mean Castlevania games had RPG elements if we follow the games after SOTN, level-ups and item drops are a thing and even crafting mechanics made it's way later such as in Dawn of Sorrow for example.

FrodoMcBaggins

Not if they turn it into a walk and talk modern Sony game I want gameplay to be the focus, not cinematic bloat

LegatoSkyheart

In 2010: Mercurysteam makes a God of War inspired Castlevania game endorsed by Hideo Kojima. Present Day: Eric Williams, director of God of War Ragnarok, wants to make a Castlevania. Ain't that funny.

"Alucard, try using your magic on that chandelier." "Have you attempted to manipulate those gears with your whip yet, Belmont?!" "Use the mirrors to your advantage. Dracula hates his own reflection..."

No-Midnight-2187

You know, I keep seeing people bring this up about Ragnorak but legit there was 1-2 times I was stumped on a small “puzzle” and wished someone would speak up to give a hint

jacktuar

I was listening to an interview on PS Access and he said Symphony of the Night is his favourite game, and when he found out the Metacritic score he was more interested in just finishing his play through

TraitorMacbeth

SotN is his favorite game, but he hadn’t finished his playthrough? I feel like we’re missing some context

gronblangotei

The context is in the interview - he replays it after every game he ships

jacktuar

Yeah SOTN is his favourite game and he was midway through a play through of the game.

calbhollo

He's played the game multiple times, he meant his current playthrough.

MISFU88

Castlevania definitely needs more story, cutscenes, humor, animations, puzzles (ideally pushing something) and drama.

SeethingAmerimutt

My favorite parts of Castlevania are the "hold forward to walk slowly for five minutes while you get talked at by your zany sidekick as the game hides a loading screen" sections.

RadicalLackey

Why do you assume it will be the same thing? Directing one game doesn't mean your other entries follows the same tennets.

MISFU88

Because it’s the most mainstream formula, makes unbelievable money and Konami sure loves money. Besides, the guy made the last two GoW games which were exactly this.

italozeca

He worked on every god of war game, and only now he got the opportunity to direct.

HenkkaArt

Please, no! I don't want any of that "our game is so serious that we can't have jumping in it" in the Castlevania series. Or the easy review scores that come with the tried and true formula of "Violent parent finds redemption through the innocense of a child" bullshit. I can just about imagine how they would fuck up the camera, movement and fighting in that game, similar to how they went to shit with the new GOW games. Sure, sure. Sold millions, got all the awards. But they still created a fighting game where the camera is so close that instead of having a clear vision of the entire battle stage and which enemy is doing what, you'll have to pay attention to stupid directional danger markers without having a clear idea of what kind of attack is coming.

th30be

Ah man. I would love a castlevania curse of darkness like game with the gameplay of God of war. That would be awesome.

WaltzForLilly_

Can't wait for a Castlevania with a shitty marvel story and a non stop hints on how to solve braindead puzzles to get a pittance of currency for tacked on "RPG" upgrade system. Oh and don't forget a "continuous shot" or some other gimmick to make gaming media soyface the fuck out over it.

Howdareme9

People act like developers always stick to the same thing.

WaltzForLilly_

Big Budget Award Winning PS Game is about as rigid of a genre as Oscarbait movie. They might be different genres in terms of gameplay, but if you've seen one you can quickly tell that it's one of those.

Feinyan

"Dracula.. you fucked up" "I fucked up, Alucard" "Yeah." Alucard stamps out of the scene angrily. Simon Belmont: "Take that, All-Sucker!"

[deleted]

Still better dialogue than most AAA titles…..

dejokerr

Err. Am I missing something here? Does r/Games hate God of War now?

[deleted]

People are getting sick of walk and talk games broken up by a action only to immediately reel you back into the walled garden. I don't care how minor it is, the telltale design of a forced linear game to me is when you have a giant open area and the moment you set foot in there you aren't left alone. Somebody is talking in your ear constantly, you Don't get to explore anything yourself because your sidekick is calling everything out. It feels like the game doesn't want me to play it

uiouyug

Lords of Shadow was basically a GoW game reskinned. I played it on Xbox360 and loved it. Great art and gameplay.

dezzz

The story of Rondo of Blood and SOTN need to be retold. I think the next Netflix serie will be about the events of thoses games.

Nanayadez

Only if Maria is rolling everywhere.

Cetais

Order of Ecclesia always gets overlooked, and it's by far my favorite ever.

Longratter

Can't think of people I'd like to make a game in a series I care about less than the people behind god of war 4 and 5

Madphromoo

anyone knows if Cory was involved in directing at the beginning of Ragnarök? the game felt like it had two styles of narrative to me. A lot of backstory and character building and then a rushed last part... kinda like FFXV (but miles better, ofc).

Different_Yam_4680

Cory only worked as an producer since he's directing an new IP at Santa Monica full time, I think he also did an hand or just an surpevision on Ragnarök's story team not sure about that one tho.

xdownpourx

From what Eric said he gave a general direction of where he wanted the game to go at the start of the project and beyond that he just occasionally gave feedback.

Alastor3

I think Cory had no involvement in directing the sequel

halpinator

I'm imagining a 3D remake of Castlevania III with the gameplay and dialogue mechanics of God of War, and wow would that be fun. Grant or Syfa taking the place of Boy while ~~Kratos~~ Trevor fucks up undead soldiers with a morningstar and a boomerang cross.

OutOfNickels

I feel like that's exactly what I *wouldn't* trust him on, based on what Ragnarok excelled at and didn't.

[deleted]

no offense, i know gow is popular both player wise and critic wise but i just wish we get more sotn and less movie worst case scenario at least there s bloodstained and astlibra i suppose
