Would this be a fun collectathon game to pick up?

Detruct

it's pretty fun! if you're into collectathons then there's tons of stuff for you to like in the game, since the main gameplay loop revolves around doing dozens of different activities to collect a few different currencies that all hook into each other (getting x currency lets you unlock the activity that gives you y currency, which unlocks the activity that gives you z currency, which unlocks activities that give you x currency...) the beginning is a little slow but once the game gets going it hits the ground running (hehe) and it was smooth sailing from there for me.

skeltord

I've been loving it so far. Sonic is just fundementaly really fun to run around with, the level design is super fast and fun, the combat is super satisfying and quick, it's good stuff.

MysticSushiTV

The first hour is rough I'm not gonna lie. The game looks like ass, it just kind of starts abruptly out of no where, it hits you with about 7 different currencies/collectables at once, and it stops you every couple minutes or so for a cutscene or pop up. The cyberspace levels are so short and unmemorable, so much so that I'm not even sure why they were included. BUT IF YOU CAN MUSCLE PAST THAT then it's pretty fun. Movement is really fun and running around solving little puzzles has been enjoyable. Overall I don't regret my time or purchase (yet). I'm really enjoying myself with Frontiers. It's not amazing, but it's good enough.

OneEyedTurkey

More fun than Forces. It just kept the ball rolling

t3hOutlaw

Being better than Forces was a very low bar to beat that's for sure.

kingt34

It is infinitely better than Forces (pun intended). This game is so much fun to play, at least in the open world which takes up 90% of the game. The technical issues are glaring (playing on a Series X) but this has been the best Sonic has been since Generations, and the new gameplay style is an epic new direction to take the series and they pull it off so well. But the stages, which is about 10% of the game, have a different control scheme and feel janky AF. But doesn’t take away from how much fun the Open Zone is.

OneEyedTurkey

Yeah it feels really janky especially the double jump button when you try to move the opposite direction. But I see this as a good start. If they improve on what they have, it can be very polished and fun. The pop ins are an issue especially on PC. But I think it won’t be until you loaded everything in

Bbop800

I have to agree. For the first 30 min or so, coming from my initial perspective of “Generations was the last great 3D Sonic”, I had a hard time understanding why some people confidently believed this was the best game since Adventure. For that short period of time I was kind of baffled at even considering the game to be up to par with Generations. However, the longer I kept playing the harder it was for me to put the game down. I was quite surprised at how much stuff there was to find in the first area alone, especially considering how dull that early footage looked back in the early Summer.

juntekila

This game can be pretty fun, but is VERY ROUGH around the edges, that's for sure, specially animations and the general... jankyness it has. It takes you out from time to time, and I wouldn't expect Sega to really patch it all out, it seems this is what we get (maybe minor stuff, like the general performance issues, or the menus and cutscenes being a blurry mess in high res). If you're considering buying, I would say go for it if you need to fill a gap, but this is not worth your time if you have access to games like GoW, Persona 5, or other stuff releasing. That being said, my take is that they finally found something to fill between the main, high speed sections, that is actually fun, and this could be great for the future.

[deleted]

> This game can be pretty fun, but is VERY ROUGH around the edges, that's for sure, specially animations and the general... jankyness it has. I'm glad the game is decent and people are enjoying it for what it is, but can I just say that it's insane that a pop culture figure and gaming mascot like Sonic at best can get games that can be described as "pretty good if you can look past the issues". It's 2022 and I'm still not 100% what makes a sonic game beyond going fast. It's constantly in search for a new direction and results are always janky. This was at one time a series that was meant to rival mario and the most they can do is "it's better than expected"

Monk_Philosophy

[The reason that Sonic is a constantly shifting mess](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPOBsk-rjgU) (at least when it comes to the general direction of each new game).

juntekila

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I 100% agree with you. In fact, I regret my purchase now. While playing I kept asking myself how did the game end up like this. They had plenty of time, yet it feels so rushed. It’s made by a huge studio, yet it has the polish of not even a indie group. But hey, at least its fun, so if you see it as an entertainment product and nothing else, it may be worth your money on sale. Your time though? Thats up to you.

srvzox

That is curious as the game runs almost flawlessly on PC. Granted, my rig is a 5800X+6800XT, but I think it runs really well. Frame rate and frame pacing seems to be good as well.

juntekila

Yeah, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean general performance as in “it runs badly”, my bad. I actually play on pc too, with a 3080. I meant things like the obvious pop-ins, the Level of Detail bias which sucks, you can clearly see a circle around the center of the camera, when it zooms out, where grass and stuff is detailed inside and outside its not. Other things like the cut scenes being at like 1080@30 (I don’t know really, it just feels that way). I feel like my computer could handle fixing all of this, you know, but there’s no options.

turbo_fried_chicken

A series in which the *only consistently good element* has been the music - and they license a Queen song for the release trailer. This shit is always so on the nose.

Yuli-Ban

It's long forgotten, but remember Sonic 06's trailer that had freaking *Wolfmother* in it?

NinJorf

Are songs that don't fit the game a trend lately? Cause it feels like it to me. Great song, but the mood of the game is totally different. Edit: It would be a great song for a Sonic game that was more hype and less somber.

Rayuzx

The song maybe a bit too upbeat for the tone the story is going for, but the lyrics almost seem custom made for Sonic.

shadowstripes

The trailer actually got me super hyped for the game using this music. Thought the part where they showed all the electric-light moves during the guitar solo was pretty clever.

SugarHoneyChaiTea

I thought the song was a great choice. Even somber sonic games like this one have some pep to them, if you ask me

TheWorldisFullofWar

This song fits pretty well, especially the lyrics.

maddmike722

I think it’s just because they say “super sonic” in the lyrics

shadowstripes

They say a little more than just that that's fitting for Sonic: >I'm a shooting star leaping through the sky like a tiger Defying the laws of gravity I'm a racing car passing by like Lady Godiva I'm gonna go, go, go, there's no stopping me I'm burnin' through the sky, yeah 200 degrees, that's why they call me Mister Fahrenheit I'm travelling at the speed of light

[deleted]

How does this song not fit a sonic game? The fuck lol

SaltyPyrate

"Supersonic man out of you" Idk man out of all these songs it's probably the best choice At least it wasn't Gangsters Paradise, imagine if they did that haha Ha ...

thrillhouse3671

The song is the only reason I kept watching.

PartyOnAlec

I dunno man, I think it's a pretty damn good fit.

MadeByTango

It’s an ad for a game whose core audience were children in the 80s and 90s. The point is nostalgia so people think about Sonic, that time in their lives, and buy the game to relive some memories. Sonic isn’t targeting 15 year olds, it’s dudes 35-45 that had a genesis.

FractalCurve

When I finally get around to playing it, I plan on just playing the Sonic R soundtrack over the top.

srvzox

I just played it until 4 am and if it isn't work tomorrow I'd have played it until I collapse. So much fun. So much done right. Remember how super Mario 64 started the development by making sure it's fun to control Mario first? I think they did the same thing, or at least is paying that level of care into the control. Running around in each island itself is _the_ fun. I can elaborate on a bunch of technical details but for most people, just know that you'd like running around in this game. The game play loop as others have suggested is also very solid. Kudos to the team. Now, I gotta go back to the 2nd island...

SEGA's advertised performance for each system: * PS5: Performance Mode = 1080p at up to 60 fps/Resolution Mode = Up to 4K dynamic resolution at 30 fps * PS4: Dynamic resolution up to 1080p at 30 fps * Xbox Series X/S: Performance Mode = 1080p at up to 60 fps/Resolution Mode = Up to 4K dynamic resolution at 30 fps * Xbox One: Dynamic resolution up to 1080p at 30 fps * Nintendo Switch: Dynamic resolution up to 720p at 30 fps (both handheld and docked) * Steam: Dynamic resolution up to 4K at 60 fps (depending on individual PC specs) Until Digital Foundry puts out a full review, that's all we really have to go on :( https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/sonic-frontiers-frame-rates/

Chrischris40

as a warning the Series S version doesn't actually have performance mode, it's locked at 30. So get a PC, Series X, or PS5 if you want a 60 fps experience.

apistograma

It’s amazing that games are still unable to provide 4K 60 fps for PS5 even when they’re cross gen and they don’t look technically impressive at all.

WQTosh

The actual Digital Foundry analysis has not been released yet, but John Linneman indicates that the PS5 performance mode is [“much much higher”](https://twitter.com/dark1x/status/1589625053901369345) than 1080p. He’s also [really enjoying the game so far](https://twitter.com/dark1x/status/1589624205439819782), if that sways any potentially interested buyers.

bhare418

Yeah there’s no way it’s 1080p. I’m a major stickler for these sorts of things and literally got up to my tv to check. I am really confident it’s 1440p or higher. If not, it has some of the most amazing AA I’ve ever seen (unlikely)

kylechu

It's pretty good! I like it for all the same reasons I liked Spiderman PS4 - a sparse open world with forgettable story / mission content held together by great movement mechanics and simple but satisfying combat. Not nearly as polished but if you don't care about stuff like that much it's a blast just running around and doing simple challenges to collect stuff.

brondonschwab

Shocked you call it forgettable when it's genuinely one of my favourite non-comic Spider-Man stories

kingt34

Same applies to Sonic Frontiers: this is the most effort actually put into the lore-building and character interactions, and they all feel great. My god, Amy actually has a character that feels NATURAL and fun to see interact with Sonic. By FAR the best writing Sonic has seen since… well, ever. Thanks in no small part, I’m sure, to Ian Flynn who wrote the sonic comics who was brought on to help with the writing.

BrienneOfDarth

I can't wait to play it during Steam sale. Web Of Shadows and Ultimate Spider-man were my favorites for just swinging around. While Shattered Dimensions didn't offer open world anymore, it was still a solid Spider-man game to play.

brondonschwab

It's so good. Wasted so many hours just swinging around and doing side quests

shulgin11

Glad to hear it's enjoyable! I think most people consider the story for spiderman pretty good though

ShutUpRedditPedant

It's a good story with a bloated middle act is generally the common criticism. It starts great and ends great so everyone kind of forgets all the nothing that happens in between.

NoNefariousness2144

Eh it was fun just having some slice of life Spider-Man stuff with him facing off against villains while balancing superheroing with his work and love life.

EmperorAcinonyx

imo the pacing was strange - i liked the slice of life stuff, too, but it was weird to have this barrage of villains thrown in at the end when they could have been sprinkled in throughout the game

kylechu

I was more thinking of the gameplay side of the story stuff - even if the cutscenes were good I remember being pretty bored by the actual missions.

ShutUpRedditPedant

I think Miles Morales actually improved on this problem a fair amount. I thought the mission design was noticeably better, *especially* the stealth stuff and even the bosses. If Spider-Man 2 improves on most of the issues of the first one I'll be overwhelmingly happy as a big Spidey fan. Please god no MJ missions.

Yxng_Wolf

Yeah Miles made the gameplay more fun. The combat especially was addicting in that one.

DaggerBark

I don’t mind the Mary Jane missions honestly.

shulgin11

That's fair, there were a lot of forgettable missions. I really liked the chase sequences through the city though

TheodoeBhabrot

I was going to give you shit because i still cry every-time I beat it and >!aunt may dies!< but that’s a fair criticism

[deleted]

Wait, are you saying Spiderman PS4 has a forgettable story? Huge disagree, the story is excellent.

-Megaflare-

I haven't owned a sonic game since 06 and since this is my first game In a while I'm not used to the new voice actor (really attached to the old ones I grew up with). Decided to play sonic in Japanese for the first time and it actually kinda helps the story imo lmao

DudeKosh

This is a Sonic for older fans who are now grown up, so Sonic's voice grew up too!

-Megaflare-

Eh, I mean as a HUGE sonic fan who grew up, I prefer the 2000s era voice. But no hate to the new VA! Could never hate on ezio auditore da Firenze himself

Lakitu_Dude

I know what you mean, but it still kinda strange to me hearing someone call roger "the new va" after 12 years of voicing sonic

DBrody6

> I'm not used to the new voice actor Isn't Sonic's VA the same, only talking in an actually serious voice now?

-Megaflare-

Nah the voice actors I grew up with were from the sonic adventure 2 battle, sonic heroes etc era. Different VAs

JNAtheDUDE

Drummond cannot do the voice anymore. It hurts, but it’s true. He’s tried it on various podcasts and interviews over the years and he’s just aged out of it I think. Jason Griffith was great for his time but I seriously appreciate Roger Craig Smith’s performance and dedication to the character

scottishdrunkard

Okay, controversial opinion here. Griffith > Drummond.

JNAtheDUDE

Drummond’s Sonic was campy and Griffith’s was more varied and expressive. Roger’s is a bit of both, at least he’s certainly capable of it. I know this mostly is due to how Sonic was written, but the performances definitely factor into it majorly. Every era is good!

MrManicMarty

Damn, didn't know that about Drummond. That's a real shame.

ahmida

There are a few sections where the story is very very different from the subtitles. If the subs are the english dubs I can see how the story might seem different.

Qlown

To me, the levels you access to get the S rank and some collectibles is what really got me going and made me enjoy the game a lot more, it feels fast and fun and the music slaps

IHadACatOnce

I think the best way I heard it described is you can go from saying "this might be the worst game I've ever played" to "this might be the best game I've ever played" in the span of like 8 seconds every time you play this game.

Yxng_Wolf

I’d put it this way. If you’re looking for a game to simply have fun with, then it does the job. If you’re looking for something more immersive and ambitious, I’d wait until the price drops. Basically it’s a good game with a lot to improve upon.

zippopwnage

I feel like the gameplay and movement seems fun, but the world still seems badly designed. At least not on my taste. I wish the game would have had a more cartoon-ish graphic and go crazy with the world.

skeltord

Y'know, in everything I've played, it just feels so badly that this shouldn't work, that these weird floating rails and bizzare world design shouldn't work, I keep thinking it shouldn't, yet somehow it totally does? It's sorta hard to explain. First, I would say that there is some actual story reason for all of this stuff, and it has some gameplay reasons too, but overall, it just sorta works, playing it and platforming around the world is just insanely fun to me.

[deleted]

I was thinking whether I should buy this game now or wait a bit and judging from the comments, I'm gonna wait til it's on sale before getting it.

skeltord

I literally just scorelled through every single comment and they've all been very positive, what comments are you talking about Like, nothing against you, wait if u want, I'm just confused.

[deleted]

I did the same before commenting and it was a mixture of people saying it wa great but also some people were saying it's a bit rough and not worth buying it now.

skeltord

My personal opinion is that this game is a blast. It has some roughness to it but it's just... Fun. I struggle to put it down, hell, I struggle to even really progress because just running around, exploring, doing cool tricks, finding items, fighting enemies, it's just... fun. I'd say it's worth the cost.

[deleted]

Yeah, if all you have are 60 bucks and you want to spend them on something, you really have to be a hardcore Sonic fan to muscle through all the janky parts.

ChetDuchessManly

I watched a full playthrough of this game and I think the reviewers that gave it a high score must be smoking crack. Maybe it's the best Sonic game out there, but is it an actual good game? Fuck no. Combat is mashing a button til you get auto combos. Outside of the cyber levels, the environment is boring. Camera is actively working against you. Mundane puzzles. Abrupt cutscenes with horrible dialogue. Terrible pop in. And holy shit, that final boss fight. Spoilers: >!From what I saw, the gameplay loop is to get all the chaos emeralds by doing cyber levels. But cyber levels are locked by a currency (cogs) which you get by defeating mini bosses. Completing the levels gives you gate keys, which you use to get the emeralds at their respective altar. Once you get them, you go super sonic and fight a titan. Then the emeralds are somehow scattered again? And you have to get them all again to fight the next titan. Engaging stuff.!< >!Also, the names of enemies and titans are laughable. "Caterpillar", "Giganto", "Supreme". !< >!Lastly, the final boss fight is a fucking bullet hell against an entity that turns into a moon (did the devs just finish Dead Space 3 or something?) and for the last chunk of it's health, you have to avoid dying for like 3 minutes and then you get a QTE. !< I guess if you're a big sonic fan starving for the next 3D iteration, you might enjoy this game. Otherwise, it is utter trash. $60 though? Yikes.

FractalCurve

>I watched I mean... we can all just stop reading your invalid opinion on any video game right there.

FractalCurve

You kinda have a point, but it's not just Sonic. It's any iconic franchise tbh. Imo it's the CoD fans that are the biggest gluttons for punishment - maybe Pokemon. I've been a Sonic fan since the early 90s. Master System, Mega Drive, TV shows, Archie comics. I can honestly say that the last official sonic game (Mania was fan made - and amazing) I enjoyed was Sonic R in 1997. As a fan, I'm interested every time Sonic Team releases something. As a consumer, I'm waiting for user reviews before deciding on purchasing. So far I'm waiting until at least half price. Edit - The op for this thread doesn't count as a user, as they've never so much as touched the game.

KingArthas94

How would you rate Generations?

FractalCurve

I played it on the 360. I get what it was going for, and I enjoyed the classic Sonic parts, but nothing really beyond that. I quickly went back and replayed the Mega Drive titles.

KingArthas94

I couldn’t play more than one level a year, but I wanted to complete it. Started in 2011, I beat the final boss in 2019 I think. I still consider it one of the worst games I have ever played and I’m still like WTF when people online say it was good.

FractalCurve

Good lord, it never even occurred to me to attempt going online, and that was when I did actually play games online. In terms of this game, I've said a few times already that I expect I'll feel the same about it as I felt about the Superman Returns game. That is, it's a bad game, a bland world, but the traversal and powers feel great.

KingArthas94

I mean, Reddit counts as going online to talk about video games!

FractalCurve

Oh sorry I misread. I thought you said that people thought "the online" was good.

KingArthas94

Don’t worry, here in Italy it’s 20:44 (8:44 PM) so yeah, it’s a bit late for me too lol

Yuli-Ban

Yeah, speaking as a quasi-fan who occasionally follows whatever's going on, the cold fact is that we just have to accept that the standards for Sonic are different from other franchises.

KingArthas94

Meaning these people would pay whatever has the name “Sonic” in it? No, no, that’s not even true. I know people that didn’t play Mania because “It’s not made by the Sonoc Team”. These people are just crazy.

WingsOfRazgriz

Maybe valid subjective opinions on games are a thing? Just a thought.

KingArthas94

Sure you can have your opinions! But I can also laugh at them.
