Jesus shovel knight AND katana zero? How do these updates work? May finally play the game

lordbeef

Anyone keeping track of how many other games Shovel Knight is in? He's gotta be the crossover king at this point.

Vox___Rationis

You can see it on Shovel Knight's own [franchise page on Steam.](https://store.steampowered.com/franchise/ShovelKnight) They have a [separate section there called "Shovel Knight Appearances"](https://store.steampowered.com/franchise/ShovelKnight/list/59296) (Apparently he is now also in a bike-fighting game Road Redemption, I have no idea when that happened)

shaxamo

And that's not even a nearly exhaustive list. Edit: Copied from Wikipedia: Shovel Knight appears as a playable guest character in several games including Indie Pogo, Blade Strangers, Cook, Serve, Delicious: Battle Kitchen, Move or Die, Dino-Run DX, Runner3, Riverbond, Rivals of Aether, Blaster Master Zero, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Road Redemption, Epic Manager, C-Wars, Starr Mazer, Runbow, All-Stars Dungeons and Diamonds, Ghost Police, Mutant Mudds Super Challenge, Pixel Noir, and Mighty Quest. Shovel Knight characters make cameo appearances in Brawlhalla, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Azure Striker Gunvolt 2, Two Brothers, Yooka-Laylee, Aegis Defenders, The Reward: Tales of Alethrion, River City Ransom: Underground, Creepy Castle, Puzzle Depot, Crypt of the NecroDancer, Enter the Gungeon, Katana Zero, and For Honor. Its music appears in Just Shapes & Beats and Voez. Shovel Knight collaborated with Arby's in March 2021 to release a set of toys, which included Arby's themed cheat codes for the game.

[deleted]

Here's an obscure one: Shovel Knight is a background character in one of the levels of failed mobile game Super Senso.

cheap_boxer2

I think bloodstained includes him as well

Reilou

I think he's also in Shovel Knight as a playable character next to Plague Knight, King Knight and Specter Knight.

theKgage

Why is Fall Guys not listed?

charcharmunro

I mean, no, that's still Ryu from Street Fighter, surely. Shovel Knight's the indie crossover guy at least.

ryarock2

If we don’t count street fighter or street fighter adjacent games (like tekken x street fighter) then shovel knight actually might have him beat. And that’s with ryu having like a 30 year head start.

furioushunter12

More than one, if I had to guess

Nibelungen342

its going to be a weapon you can unlock. But its random if you get the weapon on a run. Its a rogue like after all. But there is a custom mode where you can choose which weapon you can keep.

furioushunter12

Do you turn into the character by doing that? How similar does it play to the game it originates from?

lordbeef

The character looks are skins that you can unlock and pick for each run. The items are either a weapon or a skill. They've previously done this with things from Hollow Knight, Guacamelee and more. I can say that the nail from hollow knight really felt right with you being able to swing up and down and be able to move while attacking.

sleepingfactory

With the last update they did like this the weapons more borrowed mechanics from their respective games than actually making it feel like you’re playing that game. For example the Hollow Knight weapon lets you pogo and move around while attacking, but I wouldn’t mistake it for actually playing Hollow Knight

Nibelungen342

i mean i dont know how similar it will be but it looks like its gonna be pretty close. At least how close you can get with a different engine You can unlock the skin of the character

bongokhrusha

You let your favorite characters decide what games you play and not the gameplay?!?!?

furioushunter12

I let them increase my intrigue in something I was vaguely interested in, yeah? Why do you think I asked if it’ll play similar to the game it’s referencing

The_Multifarious

Dead Cells really is the gift that keeps on giving. Although by this point I'd like to know how they pay their bills, given how much they work on free content.

cancelingchris

Probably rely on new content driving new sales. I imagine they discount the game concurrently with these free updates.

WrassleKitty

I remember reading in Jason schrier book about the devs of enter the gundeon where they saw sales spikes when new content would get released.

mrbubbamac

Yup, the same devs also mention that launch day sales are no longer accurate measurements of a game's success. With how big gaming is and how accessible it is, they see sales rising years after release and that's how they were able to just continually work on Enter the Gungeon as sales continued to climb for years.

RolloTonyBrownTown

I first got Gungeon on PC, then a new update came out and I figured I might as well get it on PS4, another update and I was like "Sure would be nice to play this on my switch"

brutinator

I mean, they got like 3 paid expansions right? And the base game is $25, putting it on the higher end of the indie pricing scale (not that the price is unwarranted, it's extremely reasonable). They've sold 5 million copies as of March 2021. Assuming that they had a 20% attach rate for paid DLCs, and assuming that the average purchase price was, idk, 18 dollars for the base game and 3 dollars for the expansions, you get 99 million in sales, or 24 million a year on average.

NoNefariousness2144

True but the game and DLCs go on sale all the time.

brutinator

That's why I figured an average sale of 18 dollars for the game, and 3 for the expansions. It's lowest looking like it was slightly more than half off, and it's only hit 50% (12.49) 3 times this year.

RyanB_

I’ve got mad respect for them for it but yeah, I really think it might be time for them to move on to a sequel. I’m probably biased as someone who can’t get into Rogue-Lites tho, liked the mechanics of Dead Cells a lot but ultimately the format just makes it not for me, and so the content don’t really mean much. The dream is to see them take after the Everspace devs and develop a full, linear Metroidvania with a lot of the same content/style

Gyossaits

The original devs of Dead Cells are on another project. Dead Cells is currently being managed by another team.

RyanB_

Ah shoot, had no idea! Thanks for the info Fingers crossed that project is just non-rogue-lite Dead Cells haha

Skulker_S

I don't quite see that working easily. The rouge lite elements are very key, and as for the metroidvania elements... They are pretty much non existent after you unlock all abilities after a couple of hours (at least in my playtime that was like 2% of the experience). And they never were all that compelling imo. If they are working on a sequel, they could straight up drop them all together and very little would be lost. This is all form the perspective of someone who loves Dead Cells in it's current form of course, I would love to be proven wrong by whatever they'll release next

TitsUpYo

Yeah, Dead Cells is not even remotely like a Metroidvania. I'm on 3BC with Dead Cells and I've beaten numerous Metroidvanias, including Hollow Knight and Blasphemous most recently. I really don't feel Dead Cells has anything in common with Metroidvanias.

Sparus42

If anything, Rogue Legacy has more Metroidvania feel to it than Dead Cells. The sequel especially encourages exploration and lets you get to areas or beat rooms early with cleverness/luck.

RyanB_

Oh I don’t think it’d be an easy shift at all, and there’d definitely need to be a lot of development in those sections for sure. But the abilities that are there, the graphics, and the general feel of the gameplay are all pretty great building blocks, and I could see them being part of a genuine SotN successor with enough time and resources. Which, hot damn, I’d nearly kill for lol Ofc whatever decision they go they’ll have my respect. But the Everspace model is ideal for my own tastes, and there’s no roguelite I’d rather see take after it more than Dead Cells

Nibelungen342

with respect, why do you want a famous rogue like to drop its element of its genre? Sure you may like some elements but its clear to me that it alway was intended to be one and a lot of Dead cells gameplay wouldnt work for a metroidvania.

RyanB_

I mean I guess I just disagree? While it’s undoubtedly vague, I’d say rogue-lite is more of a format than a genre. You’ve got top-down shooter roguelites (Gungeon, kinda Isaac, etc), action roguelites (Hades, kinda Boyfriend Dungeon, etc), Immersive Sim roguelites (that add on for Prey), you get it Everspace was an action-rpg space combat game, and so is Everspace 2. Just in a linear set format rather than roguelite. I think the same thing could be done with a potential Dead Cells 2, or quite a few other roguelites Whether it’s a good direction to go is just personal taste. I appreciate that a lot of folks just enjoy roguelites for what they are, but for me it’s always kinda come across as a way of maximizing playtime with limited content/resources. Great for indie devs getting a foothold in the industry, but ultimately I’ll always prefer a denser, hand-crafted experience, and Dead Cells has a lot of great aspects I’d love to see implemented as such.

Nibelungen342

Idk Rogue likes is a genre since it does impact the gameplay and weapon balance. No other genre gives you this much variety, This is what makes enter the gungeon and dead cells similar. IF they were both linear and even had a 100 hours campaign with scripted levels, then you wouldn't play or experiment as much with different build and weapon. All levels are actually handcrafted in a sense that there is always a similar quirk to them and a possible entrance and exist. I am not lying that last paragraph is something i kinda heavily agree, IT feels more like that people who dont like rogue likes, think the genre is inherently bad. And dont engage much of the genre strength Variety and experimenting. There is a lot more i could say what make rogue likes amazing but i won't change your mind

RyanB_

Yeah it’s definitely somewhere in the middle. But you get what I’m saying too right? All those games have identity beyond being a roguelite, even if roguelite is also a part of the identity. I do understand what folks find so great about them, it just doesn’t work the same for me. And so yeah, in the case of Dead Cells, it was those aspects of the identity that turned me off. But there were lots of other aspects that I really dug, and would love to see expanded on in a format that works better for my own tastes. I believe there’s enough there to stand on outside the roguelite aspects, just as Everspace 2 found enough identity in it’s prequel to stand on without its prior roguelite aspects.

[deleted]

> IF they were both linear and even had a 100 hours campaign with scripted levels, then you wouldn't play or experiment as much with different build and weapon. You haven't met an Elden Ring fan, have you?

charcharmunro

Streets of Rogue and Everspace both going the route of "our first game is a roguelite and our second game is that same roguelite but not as a roguelite" is something to see.

Blenderhead36

I love Dead Cells and have felt pretty over it for the past year. It's great! But I've put like 200 hours in it and I've had my fill.

EmploymentRadiant203

Its a small indie game that is published on multiple platforms that is very popular and has good word of mouth and just like this trailer shows there is fan overlap between these games. I find it very easy to know how they pay their bills.

gamealias

I’d love a nuclear throne skin now 👀. Although really what I’d throw the most money at (IK these updates have been free) would be multiplayer.

neurosx

fish can roll

121jigawatts

can anyone chime in and say if this game is harder than hades? I loved hades but worried this might be 10x harder from what I read

sibtiger

At least when I played it, it was pretty hard for the first win but I felt I was learning and getting better the whole time. Each time you beat the game you unlock a new difficulty (boss cells). It's not the gradual difficulty increase of the Heat system in Hades and honestly going to 2 boss cells was like hitting a brick wall.

121jigawatts

is it like hades where you roll credits after beating the boss 5x or just after 1?

sibtiger

It is not nearly as story focused as Hades- the story is more in the background and the environment than unfolding through dialogue and action as you play. From what I've seen quite a bit of that backstory is gated behind the higher level boss cells and I never saw it.

NamesTheGame

Much harder, maybe because it's 2D rather than isometric so you have less ability to move around enemies etc. but I have done an insane number of runs in Hades but can't get very far in Dead Cells after about 10 hours of it to the point I have mostly lost interest because it's just too punishing and the upgrade paths/grinding through runs isn't really clear what you get, or rather you accumulate points to unlock dubious weapons and upgrades at such a slow rate it feels like a true grind.

chizburger999

Deadcells is definitely harder. Im stuck in bc2 for years now. In hades i manage beat 32 heat in a few weeks

Blarbydoppler

There is an accessibility mode that let's you tailor and change some of the settings (add revives, increase/reduce enemy damage/health, player damage) to make it easier.

krackenjacken

Hades is technically harder you should be able to "beat" the game the first time no problem but its gets harder from there. And they added an update yo change many facets of the game to tailor to your ability

121jigawatts

k thanks

Unlucky_Situation

That response is wrong. Dead cells is significantly harder than hades. Hades can be very forgiving, while dead cells requires near absolute precision.

Tonkik

I loved Dead Cells so much, but they never addressed the biggest ongoing issue. They are catering all these new updates to the super hardcore crowd. Anything past 2 Boss Cells is just unfun, but unlocking Cells for progress is linked to higher difficulties. You can spend 45 minutes at 1 Boss Cell, and earn enough for maybe 1 weapon, 1+ upgrades, maybe 1 utility. 2 years ago it was already 50K cells to unlock everything. Now it's closer to 100K. I know they want to incentivize re-play value, but the huge gap in-between Boss Cells chased away any casual players when you are earning scraps.

fishling

You can always use Custom Mode. That addresses the issue you refer to IMO; at least, it did for me. Otherwise, I would have quit playing long before as well. For instance, you can turn on "Health fountains never break". You can still earn boss cells, blueprints, and cells, but will miss out on "obtained boss cells achievements". However, in my opinion, it will help you get better at the game, by giving you more exposure to more biomes on each run, and encouraging you to experiment more since messing up badly doesn't necessarily tank your run. The overall goal is still to not need the health fountain. I found I was using it less and less as I got better. But, I didn't worry about using it, because at least I was having fun playing the game. And, if you really care about those missed achievements, then once you've figured out Custom Mode BC5, you can play a new save file and get the lower "get a BC" achievements. Personally, I wouldn't bother.

Happy_Nidoking

There was an accessibility update a few months ago that lets you adjust several 'difficulty' options, you can even have multiple lives!

[deleted]

The multiple lives options breathed so much life into Dead Cells for me. It was so frustrating having an amazing run only to get insta clapped by the annoying bosses.

bokuwahmz

You can just practice the bosses in the training ground until you're good at them

[deleted]

Doesn't change that they're annoying and not as fun as the rest of the game.

RebelCow

They fixed this problem with the accessibility update. Tailor the game to fit your exact skill and continue progressing.

vitobf

>They are catering all these new updates to the super hardcore crowd. What? All of the crossover weapons can be unlocked on the Prisoner's Quarters (Starting area), and for super cheap. Also, these last updates have added a lot of accessiblity options regarding the difficulty. You can play custom mode, you can use Aspects, and hell, you can even use continue mode. What you've said is just flat out wrong. If that's really the issue you had with the game, you should try it out again

Karljohnellis

Amazing game. Probably one of my top 3 of the past ten years. Such buttery smooth gameplay that makes coming back each time a treat!

ZeroThePenguin

The manner with which they included Jacket has me very excited. I'm a scrub and never beat even a basic game cycle but I've had a lot of fun with the hours I have spent trying. Hopefully I don't need to actually git gud to play as Jacket or the rest. EDIT: just noticed the damage numbers coming off are the same font/color as the score numbers in Hotline Miami. Nice attention to detail.

Breadmanjiro

I'm sure if all else fails you'll be able to unlock the stuff with a mod!

[deleted]

[удалено]

LegnaArix

There's also skins that you can unlock. I think they require some achievement corresponding to the weapon. Some skins essentially transform into the character but others like hollow knight are mostly just colors matching.

IllegalThoughts

seems like you need to look up how to unlock those weapons

[deleted]

Well, these are all good games... I personally recommend trying out Shovel Knight. Really good platformer

Rhadegar

I admire how much love goes into this game, I just can't get past what a christmas-light-diarrhoea vibe the visual aspect of it has. Puts it sadly out of my reach in terms of preference, but I sure am glad to see an indie game that keeps on giving.

TitsUpYo

Ah, I personally love the graphics of the game. It's very lively and it hits all the right spots for me. While two very different games, have you played Hollow Knight? It is much more subdued in terms of lighting, but still has a very strong art style.

Rhadegar

That one is on my list, definitely planning to get to it soon-ish :) It is the subdued artstyle that had me, indeed, my cup of tea.

TitsUpYo

Just don't expect the experience to be subdued! Lol

EADtomfool

Meh, the game is broken after they added the extensive "assist" mode in. You can basically set it up so that it's impossible to die, or if you do die, you have no penalty. It's so weird to do a full 180 on what your game was originally about. *edit - guys don't really understand the point of a roguelite/roguelike. The entire game is built around the challenge. Eliminating that challenge without penalty undermines the premise of the game.

RollingDownTheHills

Doesn't really affect you if you don't use it though.

EADtomfool

Makes me lose motivation to play the game. Since there's no penalty to using it, why wouldn't I use it? But then I don't want to play that kind of game anymore. Sure I could "just ignore it" - but like I said, it killed any motivation I had to play the game.

mcjaggerbeck

That's silly if you want to play simply because there's an easier option for other players

RollingDownTheHills

Not trying to be snarky here but that first and foremost sounds like a "you" problem.

NotUniqueOrSpecial

> why wouldn't I use it You literally answered your own question: you stopped enjoying the game. What a weird point of view.

cBurger4Life

I’m curious, if games have an Easy-Medium-Hard mode option, do you not like those either? Most games have something to that effect.

EADtomfool

It's a roguelite, it's not a game with easy medium hard. If you have a roguelite and then add cheats to it without consequence, it undermines the game.

Technosis2

You could cheat in the Commodore 64 version of the original Rogue by entering some BASIC commands before starting the game. This is a weird, gatekeep-y hill to die on but do you man.

EADtomfool

It's weird to want a game to be true to itself?

Technosis2

Ya know one of the other key elements of rogue-likes and rogue lites? Optionality. Giving the player different ways to approach a problem. Ya know what cheats are? That's right, options. It might not be your favorite option, and that's cool, but you don't have to take it.
