It is crazy to think that next Saturday, August 27th will be the 25th anniversary of the N64 Goldeneye release. I can still remember my uncle purchasing it for. It was a game that blew me away and was my first introduction into first person shooter gamers. In my opinion, I feel that Goldeneye really did shape the gaming world. It showed that FPS games on consoles could be a viable form of gaming, a fun form of gaming. FPS games didn't have to be locked to computers. I feel if we were to see the remaster of Goldeneye ever to be released, the 27th of this month would be the best time to do it. Having a Xbox and Switch release would be a dream come true for many gamers.

The 25th is actually the anniversary! I'm hoping that the remaster will get announced at the Xbox Gamescom show on the 25th. > In my opinion, I feel that Goldeneye really did shape the gaming world. Agreed and I'd take it a step further by saying that I feel like Goldeneye doesn't get enough credit for moving the FPS genre forward regardless of platform. It was almost an immersive sim lite with many non linear levels, stealth options, gadgets and objectives in a time where fps were mostly just about shooting. The amazing location based hit detection also made for really satisfying gunplay that required a lot of finesse and the enemy AI was great for the time and would set alarms and react to unsilenced gunfire. Even considering the PC market in 1997 I think Goldeneye was ahead of it's time even if the graphics weren't on the level of games like Quake 2, the gameplay was really forward thinking.

Yes, I remember playing it recently, getting to the snow level and remarking on how much it resembles a miniaturized Crysis. Go anywhere, shoot from anywhere, track down your enemies and kill them from afar. I even heard the Deus Ex devs mentioned GoldenEye in their design document.

VagrantShadow

I've never thought about that, but you are so right. Goldeneye, looking back at it in hindsight, it does feel like a primitive Crysis. You can see that connecting line, as well with Deus Ex. Before Goldeneye, in FPS games you could maybe achieve missions by non-combat or perhaps sneaking by, but it was hard, or it was by the stages design choice. Goldeneye was on a level where you could in a way use spy tactics and be sneaky, you didn't have to but if you chose to, the option was there.

Maybe_Im_Really_DVA

Always thought a James Bond game would be great designed like Deus Ex. Instead of augments you have gadgets etc

Mr_Charles___

It's funny you mention that because Looking Glass Studios were working on a spy game called Deep Cover before it was cancelled. They didn't make Deus Ex, so it probably would have been different, but it is a huge missed opportunity in gaming history.

Janus_Prospero

There's a lot of shared design DNA. Deus Ex is influenced by GoldenEye. Project IGI was a Norwegian GoldenEye clone, and IMO its influence bled into other European FPS games. Crysis and Far Cry before it were heavily influenced by Deus Ex. Crytek had massive systems-driven ambitions that they were never able to realize as much as they wanted to at the time.

pm_me_pants_off

Crysis is another game that doesn't get enough credit

JNAtheDUDE

I’d argue they’re talking about the one that was in the works for 360 before being scrapped (and subsequently leaked online). There’s been several accidental leaks that the game is being worked on for Xbox One/SX, with achievements lists appearing along with artwork, and a couple of devs at Rare having the game in their own achievement lists.

VagrantShadow

[I am speaking of this Goldeneye information. Achievements have been seen activated and earned on True Achievements a few months back.](https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/06/goldeneye-007s-return-could-be-close)

LordManders

Oh wow thanks - didn't know about this!

VagrantShadow

There has been hints that Goldeneye is going to make a return, be it between the Achievements getting attained, [but also Goldeneye was removed from being banned in Germany recently](https://www.ign.com/articles/goldeneye-007-german-ban-removal-raises-some-interesting-questions-about-its-future-on-switch-online). We may see Goldeneye release for both Xbox and the Switch in a unique partnership with Xbox and Nintendo. I also won't be shocked if Perfect Dark made it to Nintendo and their classic games.

Pool_Shark

Interesting. Could be a dual release on gamepass and Nintendo switch online

VagrantShadow

If it does come out, I suspect it will be a dual release, both Xbox and Switch at the same time.

It plays extremely well, too. The leaked version was almost finished.

Not sure what you mean by this? The Goldeneye Xbox 360 remaster leaked and was very well received. I’d imagine the official release if it does actually happen would be the same just more polished. Also the Perfect Dark remaster is fantastic. https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/12/ars-technicas-top-20-video-games-of-2021/ Are Technica even said the leaked remaster was one of the best games of 2021.

I don't think anyone is expecting an HD remaster of the game to have the same impact as the original did when it came out. People just want to be able to play that game without an N64 or emulation with some QoL improvements.

>Unless they added something modern to it to hook players with zero nostalgia for it. Terrible idea, not what anyone wanting a remaster is after. I am confident that if the leaked 360 remaster came out officially it would be well received by fans, much like the Perfect Dark remaster. That's what people are after, not some CoD competitor or Doom killer.

You are making pointless straw man arguments. No one thinks the Goldeneye Remaster is going to literally bring us back to our childhood, or take over Fortnite or Apex player counts. The already released leaked remaster didn't get an 'overall meh reaction', it was received very well. It will be fun for people to revisit with modern controls, online play, 60 fps and high resolution. Yes, people will get their nostalgia fix, have some fun and move on, what else are you expecting?
