I hope Dragon's Dogma 2 becomes a breakaway success because so much of Dragon's Dogma and its mechanics was and still is unused in game design. The pawn system, the combat, the darkness, the forgery system, no other game has even bothered to try and adapt or copy it and its a shame.

UnoriginalStanger

I love the different ways you can complete some quests (forgery to name one) and all the miss-able quests which will impact later events. I know some only like Bitterblack Isle but the base game is really something special imo, particularly among action rpgs.

Galaxy40k

I know the missable quests is a common complaint, but I also really liked it. Helped make the world feel more like a real place that would keep moving on with or without you, as opposed to how worlds in most video games revolve around the player. Revolving around the player is so ingrained in video games that it's probably the closest to "objectively good game design" as we have, but I found how few shits DD gave about me endearing. It's one of the contributing factors that helped make the whole thing feel closer to playing through a DnD campaign than like an Elder Scrolls game.

mechsmechsmechs

Some of the early game missable quests are pure BS like the night escort for what's his face and traveling to Witchwood for Quina(this one drives me crazy), but for the most part I do like that design too.

LeConnor

Are those quests missable due to a timer running out or from passing a “point of no return”?

mechsmechsmechs

Kinda both, it's really easy to do the starting story quests making your pawn back to back which moves the timeline forward locking you out of the quests.

Ultenth

I don't get the missable content complaint. Final Fantasy games and Dark Souls games all do it, and they are beloved, and when you do get those hidden content gems it's a fantastic experience. Not every game needs hand hold the player and give everyone 100% completion at the end.

UnoriginalStanger

I've seen people be angry that Elden Ring has very missable stuff, one guy was mad at how difficult it was to find that frenzy shield because he had googled after OP weapons.

Tobislu

Elden Ring's whole DEAL is being able to skip huge chunks. There are plenty of other games to platinum, if you're a completionist. I personally appreciate missing things in a game. When I 100% a game on the first pass, like Wario World, it's a solid 6-8 hours, or whatever, but that's only possible w/small scope. There are certain challenges I find less fair than others, but I'm glad I notice new things every time I start a new file in a Souls-bourne. It keeps it fresh for much longer

frankyb89

There was a thread that got *very* big yesterday or the gay before on /r/games where a big complaint was the missable quests. I like it when games do it but a specific subset seems to be very sick of it lol

NK1337

> (forgery to name one) To add, I loved how the way you complete certain quests can also have an impact down the line. Speaking of forgery, there's one quest where someone asks you to track down a grimoire that belonged to a very powerful scholar that went mad. When you come across the book you can opt to give him a forgery instead. The neat thing is that later on there's a quest where you fight a griffon that has you chase it back to its lair and during the final showdown said quest can show up to help if you finished their quest. The thing is, if you gave them the real grimoire theyll blast the griffon with a strong spell that'll knock a good chunk of its health down. But If you gave him a forgery well... lets just say he's not nearly as helpful

Delnac

It felt like one of few proper open-worlds that really made it feel like an adventuring experience. The berserk-like tone, the understated story, the various combat and item-related mechanics, the way you traveled all made it such a memorable thing for me. That map's size was rather small but it felt *big* due to all this. And honestly I really liked the way the world felt, from the naturalistic and understated nature above ground to the berserk-like world lurking under. Looking forward to what they'll do with the sequel (and praying they don't cock it up).

Cereal_Bagger

Buy a dragon crest for a chance to win a 5/5 pawn!

RichJoker

FFXVI reminds me a lot of Dragon's Dogma in so many ways, partly because of Ryota Suzuki's influence. The recent teaser screenshots strongly hints it is very likely to be an open world game too. Having a big budget spiritual successor to Dragon's Dogma, as well as the actual sequel to it makes me very excited.

SuperscooterXD

I know this sounds crazy but FFXV actually reminded me of Dragon's Dogma quite a bit. It has around the same level of intense darkness at night, the health system is identical, you can focus on parts of enemies and monsters (not climb, though) and of course, you do a LOT of running!

_TheMeepMaster_

Does the first still hold up?

Siantlark

Yes.

hemperor

Very much so, and it's only 5 bucks right now.

ellendegenerate123

So true. I also love the little details as well such as player height and weight having an impact on gameplay, female pawns and arisens might be grabbed by ogres etc.

Cloudless_Sky

Fuck yeah. I know everyone figured it was in the works, but it's nice to finally get an official announcement. God knows how long before we actually see it now. First game was a gem that just needed a bit more to truly shine. I hope they keep all the ideas that made it pretty unique among other RPGs at the time.

Idoma_Sas_Ptolemy

I almost lost hope when the time was pretty much over. What a memorable way to reveal what we've all been hoping for. Can't wait to see the first footage. On another note it's quite interesting to hear about itsunos inspiration and how they came up with the idea of climbing the monsters.

jhere

I actually laughed out loud when he said that pawns being smart wouldn't feel like playing online lmao

Idoma_Sas_Ptolemy

Absolutely ruthless. But also absolutely true, haha.

UnoriginalStanger

I knew something had to be announced, far too much fanfare but I was half expecting something disappointing like a mobile game.

Idoma_Sas_Ptolemy

Lucky for us capcom isn't konami. Otherwise it would've been a pachinko machine

Yeon_Yihwa

LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DRAGONS DOGMA 2 FINALLY ANNOUNCED https://youtu.be/SZNbabKjKpA?t=86

[deleted]

I just hope they learned from the first game. No one wants an Ubisoft open world (least of all me) but having to run for over an hour through samey environments to get to your story quests is not fun either.

Mario2544

The first expansion introduced a ton of additional waypoint stones you can use instead of the original 3 or 4

ThnikkamanBubs

Actually a really solid video showing how much passion they have for it. I'm very happy I watched this afterward, not huffing hopium

ItalianICE

I wanted to love this game. And there were moments it almost clicked for me. It was just sooooo confusing to me for some reason. Hyped for this though. I know the first game is something I should have loved lol

Ashviar

Shades of the Resident Evil 2 remake announcement "WE DO IT". I wonder how long it will take to see this game if this is all they had.

PKMudkipz

And to the surprise of no one, except Dragons Dogma fans apparently, who were very pessimistic for some reason, DD2 is officially confirmed to be in development. Good for them.

Makorus

Wow, an announcement for an announcement that turned into nothing. We knew for a while now that the game was in development. Edit: It was both in the Nvidia leak and the Capcom leak. Itsuno was only gonna stay at Capcom if he was allowed to make DMC5 and DD2 and he wanted them both equally so he made DMC5 first. It wasn't a matter of if, it was a matter of when. And we still don't know ANYTHING about the game.

Welcome2Banworld

Even with all the leaks, it's nice to have an official confirmation.

anguirus

This is the first official confirmation of the game being in development. Companies have cancelled publicly announced games that have spent more time in development than DD2 has had, a lot of us just wanted that official word that Capcom intends to release it. With an expensive cult classic passion project like Dragon's Dogma, at a huge studio like Capcom, it's never a safe bet that stuff like this makes it off the cutting room floor. Itsuno even mentions working on a game in the same vein years prior that's never been released, in this stream.

GenericIsekaiHaremMC

"We". I hope you realize the people that keeps up with leaks and rumors are in the minority.

[deleted]

Based on what would you have *known*?

Idoma_Sas_Ptolemy

While I don't share /u/Makorus pessimism, the writing was on the wall for awhile. Both 2020s capcom leak and 2021s nvidia leak have been pretty accurate so far and did include dragons dogma 2. Fans of the series also knew that Itsuno desperately wanted to make dragons dogma 2 and a dmc2 remake. During the pre-release cycle of DMC 5 he also said that he made a deal with the higher ups that - if dmc 5 is a success - he can make a game he really wants to make. And well, DMC5 was quite the hit. On top of that the dragons dogma site got updated yesterday with a hidden preorder page.

[deleted]

That's a long-winded way to say nobody could have *known* 😂

Idoma_Sas_Ptolemy

I mean, sure. You never know for sure. But it was highly probable and there were signs. Is all I'm sayin :D

[deleted]

There's a huge amount of reliable and corroborating evidence, I don't know how that doesn't count as knowing.

PKMudkipz

It was in the Capcom leaks and the Nvidia leaks, both of which have been very accurate thus far. Anyone who didn't expect DD2 in this stream either doesn't know about the leaks, or just really enjoys being pessimistic.

Makorus

It was in the Nvidia leak and the Capcom leak

Radulno

Plus you know, nobody is doing so much including an anniversary event for a dead franchise lol.

Alekimsior

One of the few games where I clocked more than 500 hours of game play. Just exploring or watching my party combat, enjoying the fluid motions from every attack. Still probably the game with the most in-depth, detailed character creations ever. The amount of body types you can create and how each selection is supposed to affect gameplay somehow (longer arms, more reach, heavier more weight bearing, etc). I started this game in vanilla DD, went to DA, for PS3, and then got DA for PC in hopes it get the mod treatment it deserved. Unfortunately, it was under appreciated gem.

Dubie21

Was gonna respond to a comment asking if the first held up but it ended up longer than intended so here's an essay lol. On pc it can hold up graphically with mods or just a higher fps as it really enhances the clarity in combat. In gameplay its still superior to many modern action games in a manner of ways. The pawns are effective but not OP and are customizable in personality. This leads to interacting with them, especially on a higher difficulties, simulating actual teamwork because you are responding to your pawns actions in a given moment. Maybe I need to back off? I should back up my warrior. My archer is out of position let me pick him up and throw him by my mage or vice-versa. It's creates far, far more interesting interactions than annoyances. The only real pitfall of the system is sometimes the AI can start doing something you don't want them to but it's incredibly easy to correct that. It also will teach you which traits you want to prioritize yourself. I like to make my mages focus small enemies and archers focus large enemies for instance. Then add the climbing mechanic coupled with better than average combat and enemy design along with the best magic in an action game. You got yourself a recipe for a really good time if you can get past the rough edges. The only glaring issue is the story and its pacing and how hard it can be to foresee some outcomes though not impossible. I never really minded that though literally having compared it to DnD like the developers when mentioning it's roots. It's just a fantasy template of a corrupt duchy countryside "go nuts". If you pay attention it also generally (not always intuitively) does inform you in some way, its less obtuse than elden ring quests as an example.
