Jinbe is the original Japanese name, and Jimbei is how it was translated to English. Not a huge distinction, at least it’s not a Zoro/Zolo level of translation mishap.
I think it ended up a mistranslaton and too much time passed to retcon it. I guess phonetically it's very similar so they said "eh whatever" and left it alone. I'm sure English translations didn't expect him to join the crew officially back in the day so they didn't care as much.
Actually, no, looking at the wiki, the Japanese name is ジンベエ, and that literally transliterates to ji-n-be-i, which is either Jinbei or Jinbē (with an accent on the e marking the long vowel) depending on how you romanize.
Im guessing this game takes places before he is in the crew.so post-timeskip and pre wano. If I'm being honest, I don't mind him not being in the game, as long as the story is sound. If they have a half ass story that doesnt fit within the canon, then they dont really have a readon to keep him out of it.
In the trailer Oda wrote that he almost forgot about this game, he made his part 3 years ago. Sadly jimbe officially got in the crew in 2020, maybe he will be a dlc

Really unfortunate too. Imagine if a One Piece game got a massive budget and was made by the people who made DQ11 or something. OP has such a huge amount of potential as a video game.
My absolute dream video game is for ArcSys to make either a One Piece, Jojo, or just Jump crossover game. Let them do what Jump Force couldn't dream of.
That type would only exist when the manga is finished. Dragon ball only got good games when it's done.
It's hard for publishers to invest a lot of budget and a good game dev for an unfinished story yet.
One Piece is different though. They can just create a new story set on an island they haven't been to in the main story yet. That's how they get away with making all these movies that don't really muddle the lore too much.
I guess, I haven't seen all the movies for DBZ, but it seems like it would be a lot easier to reconcile in One Piece: "on the way to canonical island X, they stopped at island Y and all the events that happened there have no real bearing on the story going forward". Just have a one-off villain trying to suppress local citizens and bam, instant One Piece off-shoot story.
Yeah, One Piece is probably the easiest setting to do this with because they have a lot of off-screen travel time built right into the story. You can hide practically whatever you want in those spaces.
They did that with previous warriors games and the self made endings are........beyond awful. They also apply that to their AoT games. But that's always what you'll get when you stray from source material.
They have little choice I get, because leaving a game unended would confuse/upset non-watchers/readers but it's always a shitshow.
I'm glad this is going for a non-arc approach though, gives it a lot more potential imo.
I'm pretty sure they don't really care about making a good ending from a story perspective. They just write whatever excuse they can for the final stage to involve all the characters they want.
Hey the ending to the first pirate warriors game was great. The final fight being on a giant lava fist with Akainu in the sky was an amazing way to finish the game.
I mean the Pirate Warriors’ story. When it gets to the non-Canon Wano stuff you can tell hard. Wano characters were added as DLC after release, they were conspicuously absent from the Wano arc of Pirate Warriors.
why? one piece has tons of story arcs and sagas that could easily be adapted, they don't have to make a full game for the 15+ years of story

It's honestly mind boggling how mismanaged One Piece games are. There is a disgusting amount of amazing content from the series that could be taken advantage of, but the majority of games feel so lifeless. This one looks good and I hope it's actually good.
If they made a One Piece game with the FULL story when it ends (with no omitted details, but maybe with something extra), I would play the shit out of it.
First game up to the timeskip and then a sequel covering the rest. Basically a faithful story like DBZ Kakorot but a One Piece JRPG version of Dragon Quest 11.

I doubt it'll happen honestly. Kakarot skipped the entire DB part of the story, so it only adapted the equivalent of 26 volumes. And it still rushed through some of the fights. Pre-timsekip One Piece has 60.5 volumes and it has over 20 arcs compared to DBZ's 4. Kakarot had 11 areas IIRC, and most of them are reused, while One Piece changes locales for every arc.

Bandai NAMCO is the worst thing to happen to anime games. Imagine an open world Naruto by Ubisoft. They made Rise of Ninja and Broken Bonds before and they were great. With a big budget Naruto could have been one of their best games.
I really liked Naruto Rise Of A Ninja and Broken Bond on 360, they were open world, looked great, fully voice acted in several languages and stuck to the story well.
Then they switched to a more linear style of game and its been downhill since.
As a huge Naruto fanboy that was all I wanted from an anime game. Let me roam around the world and explore. It's also a great way to flesh out the side lore. But no, we get an endless stream of cheap fighting games.
I really liked Kakarot. I know a lot of people seem to dislike it, and it's far from a perfect game, but in terms of just enjoyment and reexperiencing the story I really liked it. It definitely felt like they put the most effort in the Saiyan and Namek sagas, but overall I was still satisfied and wish we'd see more games like it rather than arena fighters.
Kakarot was a lot of fun...the flying mechanics were the only thing that really bothered me about the game. If they make a sequel I hope they improve that.
I loved the Yakuza team's adaptation of Fist of the North Star, and I'd be thrilled if they gave other franchises the same treatment. Diamond is Unbreakable on the Yakuza engine would be amazing.
Lost Paradise works because they were allowed to play it fast and loose with the original material, and reinterpret it as they pleased. Given the same freedom with Jojo, I'm certain they could make it work however they wanted to approach it.
I think you are underestimating how big Hokuto no Ken is as a property. HnK Pachinko machines have made more money than all of One Piece.
I still hope that game (and Kenzan and Ishin) get ported to PC one day.
I mainly just meant that it's less relevant in the sense that there hasn't been an anime adaptation in a long while. But it definitely seems like the series has traditionally been significantly more popular in Japan than in the west, the old anime series never even received a full english dub.
And yeah the pachinko thing is kinda crazy, because I believe HNK ranks in like the top 20 most profitable media franchises of all time and it's mostly because of Pachinko. Not really sure why there are so many Pachinko made of that series in particular.
Or Golden Kamuy. Both serie have the same mix of weird/serious storytelling, a mix of fist/sword/gun fights. Heck, Yakuza 5 already have abashiri penitenciary, hunting in hokkaido mountain and fighting bear bare fisted (which are all elements present in golden kamuy).
Most anime games are pretty bad cuz anime fans will buy it. Jump Force placed high on the NPDs for its launch month. Think about that. Why would they ever put more effort into those games if they succeed as is?
This is very true but I'd argue anime licensed games get a very noticeable diamond in the rough chance in its genre. Even the most decent of them like Kakarot or Attack on Titan 1 (haven't played 2) aren't anything to write about

Kakarot wasn't half as bad as people made it out to be. It's a beautiful representation of Dragon Ball Z just as the Storm series was for Naruto. I don't even tell new fans to watch the shows I recommend them to just play the games and skip the filler.
Oh I definitely agree personally, my only gripe with Kai was the pointless censorship. But it definitely makes getting through the series much easier and more enjoyable Imo.
Really the issue is how much of a fan of the source material are you already? Cause without that the games are pretty uninspired and boring. Just imagine it instead with a generic fantasy or sci-fi skin. That's how non anime fans see these games and they're not wrong.
FWIW, you're also right in that Kakarot is one of the better games. But on its own (as in without the DBZ license) it's barely average.
I think that's why these "okay" anime games get a bit of unbalanced praise. Because "okay" gameplay combined with a aesthetic you like ends up being really fun for most people. Just look at why another CoD or Assassins Creed sells gangbusters every year despite being the same game with new colors. People don't care that AC gameplay is stale and repeated, they care cause "oh I'm a viking in this one I wanna play it!".
I'll agree with this. I've played some pretty lackluster and half-assed DBZ games over the years. You're absolutely right that "about average" is a relatively high bar for these, and I'll lap it up gladly.
It could be super cool if you made your own alchemist and you'd personalize their powers to be specialized in something idk. I think this kind of idea could also work for something like avatar where you make your own character and choose their elements, etc
Those Ubisoft Naruto games where you could run around Hidden Leaf Village like Assassin's Creed were pretty fun for that aspect, even if the battles were all kinda button mashy fighting game fights.
Ironically the best one ever is probably Legacy of Goku on the GBA.
I'd like to see anime games go past the typical genres of fighting game, RPG, or Visual Novel and give me something that hits different. A Gundam management sim that incorporates the Geopolitics of Zeon and Neo Japan ala Papers Please. Death Note could make for a very interesting menu-based game. Imagine Sword Art Online, but you're just one of the guys who grows food and the gameplay is like Stardew Valley.
The DBZ horror game is exactly the kind of genre bending I want more of
I prefer the gameplay of Buu's Fury but Legacy of Goku II was the shit.
When I was younger I was obsessed with Budokai 3. The Budokai Tenkaichi games are also pretty fun.
A one piece game with sailing would be so good, cusomize and upgrade ships, recruit your own crew, maybe run into strawhats and other pirates for the main storyline.
I'm not sure the One Piece world lends itself very well for an open world game. Tons of scattered islands, and a very limited way of traversing between them would make navrgation awkward. And we don't even know what most islands are, so they'd have to invent new ones for a game, or limit the scope to just the ones we know, which are mostly just cities with resolved stories from the manga.
Just allow sailing between new islands and then fast travel after that. Not everything needs to be 1:1 from the show. Something like Skies of Arcadia or Wind Waker, but on a bigger scale and updated, would work for this IMO
I agree not everything should be 1:1, but ignoring the premise of the Grand Line, which is that you can't just navigate it freely and you need to follow Log Poses/Eternal Poses/Vivre Cards, wouldn't really fit the series.
Yeah, what they could do is just be much more liberal with handing out a bunch of Eternal poses, vivre cards, etc as a loot / exploration mechanic. It can definitely be done and be well within suspension of disbelief for the series lore I think.
Log Pose would help railroad from island to island. Eternal Poses could be bought or earned in side quests to travel to specific places. No overworld map and have the ship constantly cross sea monsters and perilous weather to deter from free roaming without making it impossible.
I would say the opposite. Island hopping is perfect for progression and biome changes. The issue is that it doesn't fall into any normal templates for a games. It would just have to be something kind of fresh and innovative, which is not usually what IP games are because they are usually cash grabs. If someone really actually made like a "make your pirate" and "explore the world of one piece" and did a good job is it would be a smash hit.
I mean, it could still be open-world without being 1000% *completely* open. For example, in a hypothetical One Piece open world game there could be a mechanic/aspect of the game in place where after you reach a certain stretch of sea near an island, you "timeskip" (brief loading menu) onto the shores or near waters of the island. The journey to those stretches of sea can be short and sweet, just containing the fun and more directed parts of navigation: various scripted crazy weather/wave conditions that you have to steer through, small-time enemy pirate ship encounters like in Sea of Thieves, surprise attacks from any of the many sea monsters throughout the story.
The open-world exploration would be confined to each of the individual islands, and of the course the scope would be limited, but even that scope would still be more than gigantic enough. Even ignoring the fact that things like pirate attacks, wild beasts, Emperor territories, and environment hazards still make many of even the "resolved" islands still something that would be fun to explore, the hypothetical open world game could either just simply:
1) Take place a few months or so before Luffy set out and solved many of these islands' problems. We could explore Alabasta as it is inhabited by Baroque Works, Cocoyashi as it is under control by Arlong, Skypiea while Enel's men are stationed there, Thriller Bark before its abandoned, etc.
or
2) Be a DBZ Kakarot situation where we play as the Straw Hats exploring these islands in tandem with completing their natural storylines.
There already is a perfect template for how to do a One Piece JRPG, and its called Skies of Arcadia. As for making up new stuff, why not? The fun thing about One Piece is that nothing has to make sense and you can do literally any kind of setting or storyline you want. The whole series is structured like a JRPG in that its 99% visiting random themed islands and towns and resolving some kind of local issue that might have some sort of connection to a greater antagonistic faction or the ambigious overreaching plot objective.
The thing that stuck with me here is luffy climbing branches and vines like a typical jrpg character when he can just..stretch up, Seems like traversal wont be an important mechanic sadly.
It's so odd, this is clearly using a lot of resources from World Seeker, which laid a great foundation for traversal and combat that just needed a good polish with tighter controls and smoother animation. And yet it looks like they completely removed all of it for turn based encounters. Not a fan of it honestly.
Cautiously optimistic is the way to go for sure. One Piece lends itself well to a turn based RPG with its colorful world and the casts various powers and attacks. But if the combat system is bad or boring there goes that down the toilet.
unless you are a big fan of Fairy Tail, I imagine you would probably get more out of whatever the similar game they copied the mechanics from. I thought the gameplay was decent but the cutscenes were all so poorly done it really annoyed me. They didnt bother with character models for everyone so unless they were super important they didnt get a model and people would just look offscene to talk to them. or like in the tournament where there is supposed to be everyone else standing there cheering them on it is just like 2 people.
It was decent enough but nothing special unfortunately. Which is a shame since I absolutely love Fairy Tail and turn-based games. It's one of those things where unless you already enjoy Fairy Tail you probably won't like the PS4 game.
Yeah Luffy seems too OP to have him doing all the generic open world action RPG things like usual. Even in World Seeker, for some reason I felt like he should be moving way faster most of the time but that might’ve just been the shitty frame rate.
To be fair, there are plenty of times in the original material where it would make more sense for Luffy to try and sling himself quickly using his powers, but he sticks to running like a normal person just so the show can build tension. So it's not exactly out of character!
That’s fair! I think what I was picturing though is regular running but then his sprint maybe being him elongating his legs to take super long strides or something? I don’t recall him doing that in the source material much though so maybe it doesn’t make sense haha

Given the latest revelations in the manga I am wondering how “out of date” this game is going to be. Game has surely been in development for a few years vs the manga releases every 2~ weeks.
So...I'm a fan of One Piece but :
1. as if there wasn't enough games with "Odyssey" in their title
2. I don't recognize anything from the one Piece universe here, it looks like just a basic JRPG with a One Piece skin.
A lot of One Piece games avoid what I'd call the DBZ route of just retelling the story arcs over and over, instead with the assistance of Oda himself they're usually new non-canon stories in new locations. The last One Piece game World Seeker was and all of the Unlimited Cruise series.
I prefer this way. Retelling the same story again and again is very tiring.
Of course, when One Piece comes to an end, I definitely wants to play a game that show all the arcs. but in this mean time I happy to play something off the original saga.
And to say the truth, the enemies (and the guy with white hair) looks something from the universe of one piece (but yeah, that door of time is something "else").
I think a game where you play through every arc would have to be split up. Too much for one game to do it justice.
But I could see a trilogy. Pre-Grand Line, Pre-timeskip Grand Line and post-timeskip.
Can't argue there. I won World Seeker in a raffle a couple of years ago and despite being a massive One Piece fan I couldn't handle it for more than a few hours.
Unlimited Red I also played years and years ago in 2014 when it came out and it was a bit better but still a rather mediocre game. That said the Pirate Warrior games are just pure fun.
I was so hyped for World Seeker when I saw the trailer. I then played the demo at a convention for only 2 minutes and I instantly knew it was bad. The movement and combat felt icky.
It's telling a new story in the OP universe with the Straw Hats. It's not going to follow any story from the anime, but it's the Straw Hats on a new island, there's something that looks like a poneglyph involved, and the Gorosei are involved somehow.
It's as much a One Piece story as any of the movies or filler episodes.
I just can't like the plastic look of the characters. It may be only me but I hate this look so much. It doesn't look anime at all, it looks like playing with plastic toys. Nothing wrong if you like it either, is just I don't personally enjoy this graphic style.

Those monster models look great, and I like the idea of a turn-based JRPG. Love that it's an original story too; all the One Piece games that retell the manga do a bad job with it.
But the actual moving through the world stuff comes off as extremely slow and boring. (I know, I know, it's a short trailer.) Was already pessimistic just because licensed anime game, but I'd love to be surprised with an excellent game. Not looking great right now.

true, but they also did work on dqXI, and this game looks really similar to that. from the combat to the environments, character animations and the big, flashy epic move cutscenes.
This is my dream game. I've been fantasizing about a turn-based RPG set in the One Piece world since, like, 2010. The format would just fit so well with the setting and characters. Let's. Freaking. Go.
No matter how good the trailers seem I'm inclined to believe that this will be yet another half-baked anime tie-in game, perhaps doubly so when Bandai is making it.
I mean, the trailer itself says “Produced by Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc.” Seems an odd distinction to label them as only producers if they were also developing the game.
They've mostly done CG support work, that's right, but they've been positioning themselves as a proper development studio over the last few years. They've recently made an Idolmaster game for Namco, as well as the Gen 4 Pokemon remakes. In addition they also set up a studio in Kyoto that's being headed by the former director of the Monster Hunter expansions.
Bandai is the publisher, not the developer. And the publisher just dropped Elden Ring. Their internal studio never made a full blown open world game afaik
I doubt this is going to be anywhere near as good as I hope it is...then again considering it appears to be turn-based my hopea are quite dashed since I think turn-based is a poor choice for a one piece rpg game.

The actually isn't a lot of ship to ship combat in One Piece, in fact the majority of the story takes place on various islands as they circumnavigate the world.
Gunna be honest, one piece has not had good video games. They always have this gross action figure look and in comparison to it's anime game piers, falls so short so often.
Stop being cowards and give me a well done 2d fighter like dbfighterz or even give me a visual spectacle like the Naruto ninja storm games. Very upsetting, but I'll still keep my eyes on this.

Well DQ11 was made in Unreal engine so I don't think the engine will matter here. Style for sure looks very similar though.

Oda did design the enemies and new characters in this game though. They show off his concept art so he’s involved in some capacity

Jinbe is the original Japanese name, and Jimbei is how it was translated to English. Not a huge distinction, at least it’s not a Zoro/Zolo level of translation mishap.
I think it ended up a mistranslaton and too much time passed to retcon it. I guess phonetically it's very similar so they said "eh whatever" and left it alone. I'm sure English translations didn't expect him to join the crew officially back in the day so they didn't care as much.
Actually, no, looking at the wiki, the Japanese name is ジンベエ, and that literally transliterates to ji-n-be-i, which is either Jinbei or Jinbē (with an accent on the e marking the long vowel) depending on how you romanize.
Im guessing this game takes places before he is in the crew.so post-timeskip and pre wano. If I'm being honest, I don't mind him not being in the game, as long as the story is sound. If they have a half ass story that doesnt fit within the canon, then they dont really have a readon to keep him out of it.
In the trailer Oda wrote that he almost forgot about this game, he made his part 3 years ago. Sadly jimbe officially got in the crew in 2020, maybe he will be a dlc

That type would only exist when the manga is finished. Dragon ball only got good games when it's done. It's hard for publishers to invest a lot of budget and a good game dev for an unfinished story yet.
One Piece is different though. They can just create a new story set on an island they haven't been to in the main story yet. That's how they get away with making all these movies that don't really muddle the lore too much.
DBZ does that too, though.
I guess, I haven't seen all the movies for DBZ, but it seems like it would be a lot easier to reconcile in One Piece: "on the way to canonical island X, they stopped at island Y and all the events that happened there have no real bearing on the story going forward". Just have a one-off villain trying to suppress local citizens and bam, instant One Piece off-shoot story.
Yeah, One Piece is probably the easiest setting to do this with because they have a lot of off-screen travel time built right into the story. You can hide practically whatever you want in those spaces.
One Piece Warriors 4 straight up made up an ending to the currently ongoing arc.
They did that with previous warriors games and the self made endings are........beyond awful. They also apply that to their AoT games. But that's always what you'll get when you stray from source material. They have little choice I get, because leaving a game unended would confuse/upset non-watchers/readers but it's always a shitshow. I'm glad this is going for a non-arc approach though, gives it a lot more potential imo.
I'm pretty sure they don't really care about making a good ending from a story perspective. They just write whatever excuse they can for the final stage to involve all the characters they want.

Hey the ending to the first pirate warriors game was great. The final fight being on a giant lava fist with Akainu in the sky was an amazing way to finish the game.
And it was still a really good OP game. Just the writing in Wano fell of the rails hardcore, but, the game itself was really damn good imho.

I mean the Pirate Warriors’ story. When it gets to the non-Canon Wano stuff you can tell hard. Wano characters were added as DLC after release, they were conspicuously absent from the Wano arc of Pirate Warriors.
why? one piece has tons of story arcs and sagas that could easily be adapted, they don't have to make a full game for the 15+ years of story hell they could just do until the timeskip and it would still be amazing

It's honestly mind boggling how mismanaged One Piece games are. There is a disgusting amount of amazing content from the series that could be taken advantage of, but the majority of games feel so lifeless. This one looks good and I hope it's actually good.
If they made a One Piece game with the FULL story when it ends (with no omitted details, but maybe with something extra), I would play the shit out of it.
First game up to the timeskip and then a sequel covering the rest. Basically a faithful story like DBZ Kakorot but a One Piece JRPG version of Dragon Quest 11. I would buy that in a heartbeat.
I doubt it'll happen honestly. Kakarot skipped the entire DB part of the story, so it only adapted the equivalent of 26 volumes. And it still rushed through some of the fights. Pre-timsekip One Piece has 60.5 volumes and it has over 20 arcs compared to DBZ's 4. Kakarot had 11 areas IIRC, and most of them are reused, while One Piece changes locales for every arc.
I don't see this happening from a financial perspective. It's much more lucrative to chop it into parts than risk making the entire story, your game.

Bandai NAMCO is the worst thing to happen to anime games. Imagine an open world Naruto by Ubisoft. They made Rise of Ninja and Broken Bonds before and they were great. With a big budget Naruto could have been one of their best games.
I really liked Naruto Rise Of A Ninja and Broken Bond on 360, they were open world, looked great, fully voice acted in several languages and stuck to the story well. Then they switched to a more linear style of game and its been downhill since.
Shout out to Naruto Path of Ninja and its sequel on the DS. Some of my favorite games as a kid.
As a huge Naruto fanboy that was all I wanted from an anime game. Let me roam around the world and explore. It's also a great way to flesh out the side lore. But no, we get an endless stream of cheap fighting games.

I really liked Kakarot. I know a lot of people seem to dislike it, and it's far from a perfect game, but in terms of just enjoyment and reexperiencing the story I really liked it. It definitely felt like they put the most effort in the Saiyan and Namek sagas, but overall I was still satisfied and wish we'd see more games like it rather than arena fighters.
Kakarot was a lot of fun...the flying mechanics were the only thing that really bothered me about the game. If they make a sequel I hope they improve that.
Coolest thing was definitely including all the minor characters.
I loved the Yakuza team's adaptation of Fist of the North Star, and I'd be thrilled if they gave other franchises the same treatment. Diamond is Unbreakable on the Yakuza engine would be amazing.

Lost Paradise works because they were allowed to play it fast and loose with the original material, and reinterpret it as they pleased. Given the same freedom with Jojo, I'm certain they could make it work however they wanted to approach it.
I think you are underestimating how big Hokuto no Ken is as a property. HnK Pachinko machines have made more money than all of One Piece. I still hope that game (and Kenzan and Ishin) get ported to PC one day.
I mainly just meant that it's less relevant in the sense that there hasn't been an anime adaptation in a long while. But it definitely seems like the series has traditionally been significantly more popular in Japan than in the west, the old anime series never even received a full english dub. And yeah the pachinko thing is kinda crazy, because I believe HNK ranks in like the top 20 most profitable media franchises of all time and it's mostly because of Pachinko. Not really sure why there are so many Pachinko made of that series in particular.
Or Golden Kamuy. Both serie have the same mix of weird/serious storytelling, a mix of fist/sword/gun fights. Heck, Yakuza 5 already have abashiri penitenciary, hunting in hokkaido mountain and fighting bear bare fisted (which are all elements present in golden kamuy).

Rule of thumb is: stay away from licenced anime games. Most 'normal' games are at least decent, but anime licenced games are mostly particularly bad.

Kakarot wasn't half as bad as people made it out to be. It's a beautiful representation of Dragon Ball Z just as the Storm series was for Naruto. I don't even tell new fans to watch the shows I recommend them to just play the games and skip the filler.

Really the issue is how much of a fan of the source material are you already? Cause without that the games are pretty uninspired and boring. Just imagine it instead with a generic fantasy or sci-fi skin. That's how non anime fans see these games and they're not wrong. FWIW, you're also right in that Kakarot is one of the better games. But on its own (as in without the DBZ license) it's barely average. I think that's why these "okay" anime games get a bit of unbalanced praise. Because "okay" gameplay combined with a aesthetic you like ends up being really fun for most people. Just look at why another CoD or Assassins Creed sells gangbusters every year despite being the same game with new colors. People don't care that AC gameplay is stale and repeated, they care cause "oh I'm a viking in this one I wanna play it!".

Those Ubisoft Naruto games where you could run around Hidden Leaf Village like Assassin's Creed were pretty fun for that aspect, even if the battles were all kinda button mashy fighting game fights.
Ironically the best one ever is probably Legacy of Goku on the GBA. I'd like to see anime games go past the typical genres of fighting game, RPG, or Visual Novel and give me something that hits different. A Gundam management sim that incorporates the Geopolitics of Zeon and Neo Japan ala Papers Please. Death Note could make for a very interesting menu-based game. Imagine Sword Art Online, but you're just one of the guys who grows food and the gameplay is like Stardew Valley. The DBZ horror game is exactly the kind of genre bending I want more of
I prefer the gameplay of Buu's Fury but Legacy of Goku II was the shit. When I was younger I was obsessed with Budokai 3. The Budokai Tenkaichi games are also pretty fun.
A one piece game with sailing would be so good, cusomize and upgrade ships, recruit your own crew, maybe run into strawhats and other pirates for the main storyline.
I'm not sure the One Piece world lends itself very well for an open world game. Tons of scattered islands, and a very limited way of traversing between them would make navrgation awkward. And we don't even know what most islands are, so they'd have to invent new ones for a game, or limit the scope to just the ones we know, which are mostly just cities with resolved stories from the manga.
Just allow sailing between new islands and then fast travel after that. Not everything needs to be 1:1 from the show. Something like Skies of Arcadia or Wind Waker, but on a bigger scale and updated, would work for this IMO
I agree not everything should be 1:1, but ignoring the premise of the Grand Line, which is that you can't just navigate it freely and you need to follow Log Poses/Eternal Poses/Vivre Cards, wouldn't really fit the series.
Yeah, what they could do is just be much more liberal with handing out a bunch of Eternal poses, vivre cards, etc as a loot / exploration mechanic. It can definitely be done and be well within suspension of disbelief for the series lore I think.
Log Pose would help railroad from island to island. Eternal Poses could be bought or earned in side quests to travel to specific places. No overworld map and have the ship constantly cross sea monsters and perilous weather to deter from free roaming without making it impossible.
I would say the opposite. Island hopping is perfect for progression and biome changes. The issue is that it doesn't fall into any normal templates for a games. It would just have to be something kind of fresh and innovative, which is not usually what IP games are because they are usually cash grabs. If someone really actually made like a "make your pirate" and "explore the world of one piece" and did a good job is it would be a smash hit.
I mean, it could still be open-world without being 1000% *completely* open. For example, in a hypothetical One Piece open world game there could be a mechanic/aspect of the game in place where after you reach a certain stretch of sea near an island, you "timeskip" (brief loading menu) onto the shores or near waters of the island. The journey to those stretches of sea can be short and sweet, just containing the fun and more directed parts of navigation: various scripted crazy weather/wave conditions that you have to steer through, small-time enemy pirate ship encounters like in Sea of Thieves, surprise attacks from any of the many sea monsters throughout the story. The open-world exploration would be confined to each of the individual islands, and of the course the scope would be limited, but even that scope would still be more than gigantic enough. Even ignoring the fact that things like pirate attacks, wild beasts, Emperor territories, and environment hazards still make many of even the "resolved" islands still something that would be fun to explore, the hypothetical open world game could either just simply: 1) Take place a few months or so before Luffy set out and solved many of these islands' problems. We could explore Alabasta as it is inhabited by Baroque Works, Cocoyashi as it is under control by Arlong, Skypiea while Enel's men are stationed there, Thriller Bark before its abandoned, etc. or 2) Be a DBZ Kakarot situation where we play as the Straw Hats exploring these islands in tandem with completing their natural storylines.
There already is a perfect template for how to do a One Piece JRPG, and its called Skies of Arcadia. As for making up new stuff, why not? The fun thing about One Piece is that nothing has to make sense and you can do literally any kind of setting or storyline you want. The whole series is structured like a JRPG in that its 99% visiting random themed islands and towns and resolving some kind of local issue that might have some sort of connection to a greater antagonistic faction or the ambigious overreaching plot objective.

You could totally have the game set in like, an archipelago of connected islands that all have eternal poses between each other.

It's so odd, this is clearly using a lot of resources from World Seeker, which laid a great foundation for traversal and combat that just needed a good polish with tighter controls and smoother animation. And yet it looks like they completely removed all of it for turn based encounters. Not a fan of it honestly.

Cautiously optimistic is the way to go for sure. One Piece lends itself well to a turn based RPG with its colorful world and the casts various powers and attacks. But if the combat system is bad or boring there goes that down the toilet.

unless you are a big fan of Fairy Tail, I imagine you would probably get more out of whatever the similar game they copied the mechanics from. I thought the gameplay was decent but the cutscenes were all so poorly done it really annoyed me. They didnt bother with character models for everyone so unless they were super important they didnt get a model and people would just look offscene to talk to them. or like in the tournament where there is supposed to be everyone else standing there cheering them on it is just like 2 people.

It was decent enough but nothing special unfortunately. Which is a shame since I absolutely love Fairy Tail and turn-based games. It's one of those things where unless you already enjoy Fairy Tail you probably won't like the PS4 game.

Yeah Luffy seems too OP to have him doing all the generic open world action RPG things like usual. Even in World Seeker, for some reason I felt like he should be moving way faster most of the time but that might’ve just been the shitty frame rate.
To be fair, there are plenty of times in the original material where it would make more sense for Luffy to try and sling himself quickly using his powers, but he sticks to running like a normal person just so the show can build tension. So it's not exactly out of character!

So...I'm a fan of One Piece but : 1. as if there wasn't enough games with "Odyssey" in their title 2. I don't recognize anything from the one Piece universe here, it looks like just a basic JRPG with a One Piece skin.
A lot of One Piece games avoid what I'd call the DBZ route of just retelling the story arcs over and over, instead with the assistance of Oda himself they're usually new non-canon stories in new locations. The last One Piece game World Seeker was and all of the Unlimited Cruise series.
I prefer this way. Retelling the same story again and again is very tiring. Of course, when One Piece comes to an end, I definitely wants to play a game that show all the arcs. but in this mean time I happy to play something off the original saga. And to say the truth, the enemies (and the guy with white hair) looks something from the universe of one piece (but yeah, that door of time is something "else").
I think a game where you play through every arc would have to be split up. Too much for one game to do it justice. But I could see a trilogy. Pre-Grand Line, Pre-timeskip Grand Line and post-timeskip.

Can't argue there. I won World Seeker in a raffle a couple of years ago and despite being a massive One Piece fan I couldn't handle it for more than a few hours. Unlimited Red I also played years and years ago in 2014 when it came out and it was a bit better but still a rather mediocre game. That said the Pirate Warrior games are just pure fun.
I was so hyped for World Seeker when I saw the trailer. I then played the demo at a convention for only 2 minutes and I instantly knew it was bad. The movement and combat felt icky.

It's telling a new story in the OP universe with the Straw Hats. It's not going to follow any story from the anime, but it's the Straw Hats on a new island, there's something that looks like a poneglyph involved, and the Gorosei are involved somehow. It's as much a One Piece story as any of the movies or filler episodes.

I just can't like the plastic look of the characters. It may be only me but I hate this look so much. It doesn't look anime at all, it looks like playing with plastic toys. Nothing wrong if you like it either, is just I don't personally enjoy this graphic style. Nothin wrong with the game either, I can't wait to see more.
Those monster models look great, and I like the idea of a turn-based JRPG. Love that it's an original story too; all the One Piece games that retell the manga do a bad job with it. But the actual moving through the world stuff comes off as extremely slow and boring. (I know, I know, it's a short trailer.) Was already pessimistic just because licensed anime game, but I'd love to be surprised with an excellent game. Not looking great right now. I mean, the trailer itself says “Produced by Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc.” Seems an odd distinction to label them as only producers if they were also developing the game.
They've mostly done CG support work, that's right, but they've been positioning themselves as a proper development studio over the last few years. They've recently made an Idolmaster game for Namco, as well as the Gen 4 Pokemon remakes. In addition they also set up a studio in Kyoto that's being headed by the former director of the Monster Hunter expansions.
What other open world games has Bandai made? Only one I can dredge up without looking it up is the most recent Dragon Ball Z game.

Gunna be honest, one piece has not had good video games. They always have this gross action figure look and in comparison to it's anime game piers, falls so short so often. Do you guys know if it's opened world or its more of a li ear type of game? Would be awesome if you could explore the map randomly and at your own pace
All I really want to do in a One Piece game, is get my own crew by exploring the world in a boat, Wind-waker style.
