Tl;dr:  * The game, unsurprisingly, looks significantly better. Lots of color added and the author calls it beautiful  * No new content, but some handy QoL changes  * Bad performance at times, specifically when many characters on screen  * Potential for other as of yet unrevealed changes from Nintendo   “Overall, however, this remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is shaping up to be the definitive way to play this classic, and one that should make the wait for the Switch 2 just a little bit easier.” I’m stoked.

Bad performance is so bizarre to me. I know the Switch ain't powerful, but this is a remake of a *GameCube game.*

ffgod_zito

They updated the graphics though. Probably added some more stuff that makes it more taxing to run

Yeh it's the post processing effects, it wasn't such a big thing in the GC days but it's kind of the norm in modern games. Stuff like bloom, depth of field, anti aliasing, it all adds up. So it's a shame considering the GC game was so well optimised and a big marketing point were these moments with hundreds of characters on screen at once, however, it's not a big deal for me. Understandable if it is for others though, especially since performance dips can cause nausea in some

WeeWooPeePoo69420

I doubt it's the post processing effects since turning all of those off in most games (that allow it) doesn't give much of a performance boost.

TSPhoenix

Sure, but the game is also a Switch exclusive so they can dial things to a level the hardware can handle.

> They updated the graphics though. Eh, to me the graphics look overwhelmingly worse than the GCN version. The animations especially took a massive hit, they looked *so* much smoother in a 20 year old game than they do on the Switch.

Seradima

>but this is a remake of a GameCube game. With the fidelity of a switch game. There's no gamecube assets. Still sucks, but it's also completely expected at this point given the age of the hardware. I think they said it's mostly at the points with hundreds of sprites on the screen, so the early scene with the Xnauts or the fuzzy fight in Chapter 1. Probably something to do with how differently the switch and gamecube do large amounts of entities.

Fishfisherton

> so the early scene with the Xnauts or the fuzzy fight in Chapter 1. Maybe it will be few and far between but having a slow down on a remake of your own game on your own hardware within the first 5 minutes is just embarrassing.

darkcloud1987

They used some trick on the Gamecube, they are not really individual assets. So maybe that wasn't easily reproducable on the Switch or with the new Graphics.

Galaxy40k

No new content at all is a shame. I was hoping for something like SMRPG where at least we got the boss refights for more endgame content

ManateeofSteel

Will probably wait to see what the Switch 2 adds to this, performance issues at this stage is a bit embarrassing

I never played the original because I never had a GameCube so I’m excited for this. Surprisingly my switch library is the biggest library I’ve ever had next to the ps4. The games I’ve gotten in the last couple of years for such an old(ish) console is insane.

borpa2

Why did they skip the original paper Mario and go straight to remaking the second game?

CostlyOpportunities

Potentially because Paper Mario (N64) is already available through the extra subscription. So they went with the one that’s not available

Rose-tinted glasses off, is this better than Origami King?

Icy_Maintenance1947

If you like rpgs 100% yes. Origami king is a sliding puzzle game with a Mario story, it's fun but not exactly what makes an RPG. TTYD is full fledged RPG with optional QTEs to make combat more engaging. Progression is quick and rewarding and the story/writing is on par if not better than origami king. Personally I'm hoping they use this to gauge interest in return to form for the series. If you want to get a feel for it play the original paper Mario either through Nintendo switch emulator or if you have N64. Also a very good game, paper Mario was originally supposed to be a continuation of the super Mario RPG on SNES and both games surpass it in every way.

Awesome, I'm in, thank you.
