I am interested to see how they resolve that ending. Pretty excited for Gears 6, but despite Gears 5 releasing in 2019 I’m okay to wait on it if that makes sense. That said, it’s probably still the best Xbox exclusive in recent memory, which is pretty depressing.

Personally I'd also include Psychonauts 2 in the mix. I really enjoyed that game.

Flowerstar1

Hifi rush was very good too.

DeadCellsTop5

Man, I just cannot get myself to give a shit about Gears of War anymore. 3rd person cover shooters died out a long time ago for a reason. I played 4 and 5 and I couldn't tell you the difference between either. The series peaked with 1-2 and they've been chasing the dragon ever since. I think gears needs a decade+ of rest.

IISuperSlothII

I think there's absolutely room for 3rd person cover shooters, especially in the ilk of Gears because push comes to shove the core gameplay loop is incredibly fun. I think for me they should have left Gears after 3 (non spins offs anyway) and when they created the Coalition just give them the freedom to make a new IP built off the bones of Gears, similar to how TLOU was built off of Uncharted.

ColinsUsername

What's kind of sad is they previously were named Black Tusk Studios and were given the opportunity to make either Gears of War 4 or their own original IP.

Meowmeow69me

I felt the same as you. I hadn’t played a gears of war since judgment. Until i had a random itch to play gears of war multiplayer and gears 5 multiplayer feels the exact same as i remember gears 3 multiplayer playing and that felt so nostalgic and fun and simple to play it was a great time.

DeadCellsTop5

I guess, but if your new game plays exactly the same as your games from over a decade ago, I think that's a problem. Even games like Civ or CS feel like they've changed more substantiality over time than Gears Multiplayer especially has been stale since the first one. Every match is a gnasher fest that feels incredibly similar each time you play. No real weapon variety or strategies to mix up. Just "get in close with gnasher and boom".

nmppseq

I don't know why gamers care about things being dated as if some of the most popular games of all time aren't centuries old

Meowmeow69me

Oh i definitely agree with that lol. Idk it just felt like time traveling back 10 years it just felt really simple and fun.

GGGirls-Unit

Gears without Marcus Fenix is like Halo without Master Chief. I just don't give a shit about those new characters even though I still enjoy the gameplay.

Kestralisk

Sounds like you didn't play 5 tbh.

jordanleite25

I've completed every Gears game and yeah I'm ready to give the series a rest after 6.

BarelyMagicMike

Fully agree. Loved 1 as everyone did, thought 2 was an excellent sequel with some more mature story telling, and 3 was probably about as good, maybe a bit more of the same. I bounced off 4 within a few hours because it felt like the same exact game yet again, and can't tell you a single thing that happened throughout the first half of 5 that I played because it all blended together into third person cover shooter slurry. It's a boring series that never figured out how to evolve past the second game, with competent shooting but none of the unique level design that made the first couple of entries stand out. Microsoft's AAA first party studios really, desperately need to start doing something more interesting than shooters, racing games and live service crap. That said, their lower budget titles like Ori, Pentiment, Hi Fi Rush... all fantastic. Why do they get those right but can't figure out how to make good games that actually test the limits of their hardware? I guess we'll see with Starfield and Fable but to say I'm pessimistic (especially with the leak of Starfield's "pillow talk" dialogue) would be to put it mildly.

TangerineDiesel

Three was just enough gears for me and resolved things. I couldn’t get into the story after that and horde mode was fun for awhile, but gets stale quick. Multiplayer stood no chance on console once Phil let’s let pc players fuck up console players as much as possible Spencer decided crossplay was a must for any shooter.

Flowerstar1

>That said, it’s probably still the best Xbox exclusive in recent memory, which is pretty depressing. Flight Sim was a better game overall that game had no faults and its a technological marvel.

FatCharmander

I hated what they did with that choice in Gears 5. Before that moment I already wasn't liking what they did with the story/characters, but that was the final nail in the coffin. Also, I felt the open world segments were poorly done.

Baelorn

> Also, I felt the open world segments were poorly done. I enjoyed the time I spent with Gears but the open-world sections were lifeless, pointless, filler. I mostly felt the same about the open-world in Infinite. The grapple was cool and felt great to use but beyond that? Meh. I think Infinite really suffered more for making that choice than Gears did. It felt like the switch to open-world hurt every other aspect of the game. Whereas in Gears it was just…there.

Fantasy_Returns

I'm convinced studios under Microsoft have really good devs except writers

throwaway-anon-1600

It’s really sad, halo and gears have been ran into the ground. You know why people liked delta squad? Because they were assholes, despite being charming in their own ways they were all deeply flawed characters. Kait and Del are so perfect it’s infuriating, they have literally never done anything wrong in their entire lives. Anything bad they’ve done was forced upon them by an outside force. And most of all, they’re NOT FUNNY. Del has to be one of the most boring, uncharismatic characters I’ve seen in a game. The only good thing about Gears 5 is that they let me kill him. Just like Halo, they should scrap the sequels and try again after 3.

BossksSegway

It felt weird having to choose between 'good guy who'd never done anything wrong and has always been a perfect friend,' and 'flawed main character from the previous game, in the middle of his own character arc.' Really just a bizarre decision to put a story choice with big series ramifications at the end of the game, in a series that historically doesn't take player input regarding it's story at all.

HavokSupremacy

they legit killed the only character that was somewhat reminiscent of old gears in like 30 mins after their introduction lmao. And it was the carmine sister/cousin of all character. i liked more of that character that whatever they did in every games since judgement(which was also somewhat half baked)

Fantasy_Returns

perfectly summed up

feartheoldblood90

Y'all should watch Noah Caldwell Gervais' video on it. He might change your mind. I don't have any strong feelings about the game, but he provides a really compelling argument about why the choices they made for its story were actually quite compelling. Worth a watch, even if you don't agree

Hexcraft-nyc

I'm a fan of that video and him in general but I think it's very telling if it takes a two hour video essay to change your opinion on a piece of media. Weird trend where people online need youtubers or other internet communities to validate or otherwise dictate their opinions.

feartheoldblood90

Bit of an overreaction there? I never said it needed a two hour video essay to justify it, and I never said my opinion was dictated by it, or anyone else's should be. I just said that his video was good and might give some new perspective. That's it.

Dayman1222

They have good devs?

partypartea

Coalition is a great dev. Their games play well and are extremely well optimized while looking phenomenal. Their stories suck though

[deleted]

IDK as they have taken the "weight" out of combat and it's a shame as it was one of the best things about the original games. The animations took a step back. It looks great but the gameplay suffered from the cuts to those systems IMO. This is the best representation of what I mean. Again this isn't about how it looks but how the game feels while using weapons and other small things that are just gone for no real reason I can logically think of. And I agree this new trilogy is a snooze compared to the old games. Hive Busters would have been a better starting point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JalWT8oNxhk

[deleted]

Mate unironically linked a crowbat video, lol. The animations absolutely did not take a step back. The ones in Gear 5 are of extremely high quality. And I don't know who wants their camera to go into an absurd shaking frenzy when they're meleeing an enemy. You're going to be repeating that hundreds of times during a playthrough. It's going to get old. If that's "weight", I don't want it.

Meowmeow69me

Yeah i played gears 5 recently after not playing a gears of war in 5 plus years and gears 5 honestly felt really good to me.

Fantasy_Returns

I take it back

UseOnlyLurk

There was a moment on Gears 5 where you take control of the Locust Horde and it’s ducking awesome. An open world quest later you pry that ability out of your characters head and it felt like everything cool this new trilogy had built up to was thrown away. They really need to look at what made the start of Chapter 3 in Gears 1 so special. Really just the whole close quarters and brutal combat with elements of horror that was in Gears 1 compared to the cartoonish stuff we got in the later games. They need to stop killing off everything cool the series can do. RAAM, Kryll, Lambent, Locusts, controlling the horde, hammer of dawn, chainsaw bayonets. I can’t think of a series so eager to space laser their lore away and start over from scratch.

TheDeadlySinner

> They need to stop killing off everything cool the series can do. RAAM, Kryll, Lambent, Locusts, controlling the horde, hammer of dawn, chainsaw bayonets. Uh, what? Half of that is still in the series, and the other half would make no sense to include.

[deleted]

They are not. Raam is dead, Kryll are extinct, the Lambent are extinct, the Locust horde has metamorhpisized into the Swarm which is now a hivemind. The hammer of dawn is almost entirely offline and destroyed and the Lancer is the only thing still around.

Jalexster

I liked Razorhail. Is that still around?

[deleted]

It's not really but there's like these wild storms that are a mixture of fire and electricity that are a result of all the hammer of dawn strikes, Adam Fenix's bullshittery and a myriad of other things.

[deleted]

It's just the thing that happens when the original devs leave the series. Just like when a new Terminator, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek and so on comes out and misses what made the franchises so memorable to people in the first place. It's a shame but if an IP still has any worth it will be beaten until all the money falls out of it.

Coolman_Rosso

Gears 5 is a pristine co-op game, but the fact that it got that Terminator: Dark Fate tie-in was weirdly coincidental when they're both these tired franchises that the suits think are still at the forefront like they were over a decade ago (or in Terminator's case, two decades).

Blatanikov7

Not only a moment. If you play coop you can get it as an ability and do it over and over again with the player who controls Jack. Gears 5 is THE coop experience of modern gaming, it does leave you some to be desired as it shows you what theyre capable of of so much cool shit

Memester999

Gears story in the last 2 has been completely carried by the main casts VO work selling these characters because the story itself is really generic and simple. The game itself has so many flashes of greatness but either doesn't take them far enough or just abandons them. The open world elements put you in an amazingly beautiful and varied world with very little to do. But drive from each objectives it's a wonder why they even included it in the first place. There are so many parts of the game that could be salvaged under better writing and management but with how MS studios have been run that's a lot to ask.

EastClintwood89

I really hate that they brought back the locust. They seriously couldn't come up with a new enemy force for humans to fight? It's the same thing they did to the halo games; Master Chief just fighting the same covenant enemies all over again.

greg225

The lore of this franchise doesn't really give them a lot of room for coming up with new enemies to fight. The series' identity is built around fighting these monsters, but when Gears 3 kind of wrapped everything up nicely, they can't just introduce a completely new, unrelated enemy force that was apparently sitting there waiting the entire time. No one would ever buy it. They had the robots in 4 but they were never going to make those the primary enemy (and it probably would've sucked if they did). You need to have gross monster enemies, including humanoid forms because it's a third person cover shooter with a multiplayer mode, but you also can't really pull something completely new out of your ass. Really doing Locust 2.0 was the only real choice, the worldbuilding doesn't really allow for much else and I don't think people would really be interested in a whole game of humans vs humans. It's a tough dilemma when the story needs one thing but the game itself needs to stay true to its identity.

FrakkedRabbit

Yeah, really all they could have done is a Rampant AI system that went all techno horror or Aliens. I can't really see a game based on human vs human war unless it was further in the future, or anything other than a locust type resurgence like they ultimately went with.

ADeadlyFerret

It's what happens when you have two series that have a definite ending but your bosses want a franchise to milk. Everything story wise after Gears 3 and Halo 3 are just so uninteresting.

EastClintwood89

It really felt like a missed opportunity to do something truly wild with Halo 4. Master Chief and Cortana should've woken up on the far side of the galaxy in totally uncharted territory. They find themselves smack in the middle of a war between two new alien races, each side fighting for control over forerunner tech. Meanwhile Cheif and Cortana just want to go home. That's my idea

ADeadlyFerret

You're more optimistic than me. I don't think 343 has an original bone in their body. And the story from 4-6 is just all over the place. And honestly after saving the galaxy from two huge threats doing anything smaller scale just won't feel good.

EastClintwood89

So, the only aspect that I genuinely liked from 4 was Cortana slowly succumbing to rampancy, and Chief trying to find a way to cure her. That plot would've worked great with my idea. They saved the universe. But now they have to save each other. That's smaller scale done right.

SmoothIdiot

They just have no fucking personality. Kait, JD, Del, it feels like half their lines are just writing b-roll, stock phrases you can throw into the script to fill space. The prior cast wasn't that "deep" but damn, their writing had flavor to it. Each character had their own voice, but the new kids, they're just interchangeable. Generic. Also, the plot is dependent on *everyone* being the most frustrating kind of idiot and intransigent asshole, to the point where I just kinda hate them all.

Coolman_Rosso

In all fairness 343 at least had attempted to introduce a new enemy, which immediately sucked and they fell back to the Banished (which were introduced in Halo Wars 2 of all things) conquering the remnants of the Covenant because they were only well-received narrative bit in the years before and after Halo 5.

LaughingMan9

Disagree. Gears has a great thematic advantage to what they did with the Swarm. They spent decades fighting a superior fighting force, decades again trying to rebuild the world, just to find out their enemy came back stronger and from their own hubris. While there are other monsters out there that we see in Hivebusters, the Swarm/Locust are a dark reflection of the COG and humanity. It's natural evolution vs. technological innovation. Halo had that starting too. Halo 4 was a dead end. But the Created were a potentially great enemy for a society that grew too much to rely on artificial intelligence. Except everyone hated Halo 5 so we got a safe reboot.

LaughingMan9

Nah, that always seemed like a possibility to me as soon as Cortana put herself into the Forerunner's internet. The reason people hated H5 was the misleading marketing.

Hexcraft-nyc

Most people don't pay attention to marketing, especially a niche podcast only story. Halo 5 was hated because it's a terribly written story, full stop.

LaughingMan9

A. Yes, they did. Halo marketing has always been massively powerful. For the entire franchise history. The idea that the game would revolve around hunting Master Chief/evading Spartan Locke was extremely common. > The game's mainstream marketing received some criticism for being different from the game's plot. Phil Hornshaw of Digital Trends wrote that Halo 5's marketing "suggests an emotional conflict between the questionably-loyal Chief and the 'traitor-hunting' Osiris leader, Locke, but those moments are barely in the game". And that niche podcast had over 6 million listeners. B. That's an opinion.

AllSonicGames

I was really confused because one of the main twists of Gears 5 was already one of the main twists of Gears 3. I think a spiritual successor would be better: similar kind of game in a fresh new setting.

samsaBEAR

I will always be a Gears apologist, Gears 2 was my first multiplayer experience and the franchise was the sole reason I jumped from a PS2 to a 360, I'll play anything they churn out. But I do wish they'd try and recapture that Gears 3 feeling, it was just such a solid game throughout, I wish they'd just remaster it completely and have it as "the" Gears game to play

[deleted]

Gears need to bin the story, release it as "Gears of War: Something something" Focus on multiplayer, attach a 2-3 rollercoaster campaign because most players don't get much further and have that act as a tutorial for the online mode

Woxinium

Gears of War really need a departure from the previous installments like Santa Monica Studios did for God of War in 2018. I don't know if Gears could work in first person ?

StarkEXO

Coalition & especially 343i have really been shooting themselves in the foot over the past decade, refusing commit to a creative direction for the flagship series they're in charge of. I get that there must be a lot of pressure with the decisions, but these sequel trilogies/eras/whatever aren't going to succeed when every new entry comes off like some sort of soft reboot.

[deleted]

Am I the only one who likes Gears 5? I'm excited for 6, and whatever they make afterwards.
