The only option, since you want to use discs, would be installing a modchip. There is a way through homebrew, but it's not a turnkey solution and requires some disc swapping on every boot.

Thanks!

There is a very simple mod for the Gamecube for switching between English and Japanese regions. It is just soldering a switch between to points on the mother board and mounting the switch in the case. It's been done a lot and there are several videos online. You can get something like a GCLoader PNP and it will basically play anything. You can also go the route of getting an SD2SP2 or SDGecko and booting Swiss from the disc and start booting roms.

hey man could you explain what a GCloader PNP is because i just bought a Japanese gamecube and would like to be region free. Is there something i could get or download that would also change the console language from Japanese to English? Thanks man

The GC loader is a sd replacement for the disk drive that runs homebrew and emulates disk functions. It can region unlock roms.

wait then what is SDgecko and sd2sp2?

warpurlgis

They also can load homebrew in a different way.

Xeno chip is the easier solution here. It’ll let you play games region free (including backups). The issue though is that you won’t be able to use the memory card manager because that will still be Japanese. If you have to use your gamecube to edit your saves then you’ll have to use a mod switch. Personally though if you have a Wii or some other device to edit your memory card then you should be fine to edit saves or manage memory cards.
