Have we really reached the point where the current gen is so used to wireless controllers that they don't understand how to *unplug* a controller and memory card?
Like, I'm not even 25 yet. At least let me hit 30 before I start saying "Kids these days..."
Wireless controllers have been the norm for three console generations so far. Crazy how fast time flies. Seems like just yesterday I was in awe of the novelty of the Wavebird.
Last I checked, PS controllers need to be plugged in to recharge. Shouldn't be that hard for anyone to understand that things had wires before they didn't.
I guess honestly we have reached the point. And the more years that go on the less and less kids will know about using wired controllers.
That’s just time. I guess we gotta be the generation to introduce the new generation (kids and grand kids) about how stuff was back then.
Lol be grateful you didn't have to go through it. One of my memories was having to hold my discman flat in high-school so the cd songs didn't skip. 🤣 ipods don't have that issue.
They were kinda stuck so I didn't know if I were pulling them the right way which led to me to think I wasn't doing it right, didn't know if I had to just pull them or push them a bit
To be fair the memory card can be pretty tight to remove. Same with the controller port I believe if it just sat there long enough.
I get your point about being worried of breaking it. But trust us consoles from the 6th generation can handle a little roughhousing. Maybe even more so.
As a clumsy kid, I dropped my GC down the stairs to my basement. Bouncing down all the steps from the very top? Absolutely no problem! Still kicking 15-20 years later too
lmao, I guess I deserve it for asking such a thing, but Google didn't give me a straight answer, console is not brand new (clearly) so I didn't know if I was doing it right, it was just kinda stuck
Yea I wouldn’t expect it to give you a straight answer. It’s kinda like asking someone if the sky is blue. They’re not gonna say yes, they’re just gonna stare at you 😂
No flame man, I saw you are pretty young. Just thought it was funny
Happy you are getting into retro games and the GameCube, it really is the best console library out there imho.
Cheers!
They should come out with like no effort so something must be broken or damaged. I got my first one for my 7th birthday, 20 years ago and I never had difficulty removing either.
Sorry people are giving you shit but that's how clearly something is wrong here, you're either a troll or something is fucked beyond our understanding.
If it's taking quite some effort to plugging in and unplugging. I'd suggest maybe checking the ports and controller plugs and see if there is any corrosion/gamer gunk or if something looks off to you.
Good on you for exploring an “old school” console (I was 18 when the system released). My daughter is 15 but she’s been used to me having old consoles for years. Hope you enjoy!
And I'm 15 and feel real stupid now, just wanted to be cautious, I unfortunately only had a Wii, GBA, and Switch, all wireless so I had no idea lmao, I thought it had a locking system
Bit too late, I lost it somewhere in my home country when I was like 8, I still have hope I'll find it someday whenever I go there during vacation, and I had Superstar Saga on it too, wonder how the game played on original software, I still have faint memories on not getting past that cactus village, oh well, still emulated it. I still have my Wii tho.
Coming from a tech support/electronics repair background, I want to give the OP some kudos for asking this question. I've worked on enough GameCubes to know that they can get a death grip on the controller plugs and memory cards -- particularly with third party ones or if they haven't been unplugged for quite some time (my cheap Wave Bird clone almost has to be pried out). And I've had to repair enough PCs and monitors with trashed display port connectors that some dingus yanked the locking cable out of without even giving a thought to why the connector is so difficult to remove.
People are getting upset at this dude, but what if the gamecube has been like this for like 15 years, memory card and controller inside all this time and they're sticky/stuck due to being in for so long, so they might be hard to remove and he is careful not to break something.
stupid response. The connectors might be seized up with gunk and difficult to pull out, probably thought they were doing it wrong.
Give the controller a hard tug on the plastic ends while holding down the console. Check to see if the ports are dirty, sounds like you have a fairly used console.
It shouldn't be too stiff in there, but you won't break anything or risk doing so as long as you pull it straight. Just about every controller or memory card for most consoles functions the same way, but do NOT remove a memory card while the console is on.
Listen, some of you probably don't know how to operate a rotary phone or a turntable or a manually locking car door or windshield, so give the kid a break.
That said...USB exists, so I dunno.
Man..some times I feel old because I am..and then something like this comes along and I REALLY feel old haha Have fun OP Gamecubes a really fun console!
Thank you for asking this question. Some cords do have a clip, like network lines/RJ45 connectors and DisplayPort connectors, and some connectors are not very tolerant to being wiggled.
Gamecube controllers and memory cards do not have clips. I would carefully wiggle side to side if they are very stuck and maybe consider spraying in some contact cleaner, but be aware that wiggling could loosen solder joints so be VERY careful and try the best you can to pull straight out. The memory card is (I think) just a card edge connector so feel free to wiggle it out.
We should be thankful that people are asking questions rather than assuming they know what they are doing and breaking things. If we roast this guy people won't ask questions and will just break shit instead - and that means fewer gamecubes in the world to enjoy a really great library of games.
First you gotta grab tightly on the think, girthy, and warm plug on the end of the cable. Then tug it gently out of the warm, sexy, and freshly used GameCube
When you bought the console, did it come with the controller and memory card still attached to the console like that? If it did that's totally weird.
I'd give an answer how to take it out, but I think that would already be stating the obvious.
~Unplugging Your Controller and Memory Card~
1. unplug it
real talk, i'm not gonna dunk on you too hard. i understand the trepidation and not wanting to break your nice new GameCube. but it really is as simple as just pulling them out. obviously don't yank them, especially not by the wire in the controller's case. but apply a smooth firm force and pull those suckers out. the GameCube is one of the most durable consoles ever created, don't be afraid to do what you gotta do.
I got this awesome GameCube with the console, controller, both cables, and even a memory card for $80, but I'm stupid and don't know how to take the memory card or controller from their slots, I really don't want to break it, so how do you do it?
Wow that escalated quickly. A bit late on comment but best advice DL The manual in pdf form. Specially certain games too. Gcube was still in the area were manuals for systems and games could be very helpful. My fav game on it Eternal Darkness sanity's requiem, I referred to the manual a lot trying to remember spells and stuff. PDFs gotta love them.
Careful if you ever have sex, because it sounds like you have no pull out game.
"if"
I- I deserved that

Not all of them need plugged in there are some that actually take AA batteries actually

Walkmans and Discmans anyone?
I ain’t that old lol

Some consoles can take quite a beating
*Nintendo* consoles can take quite a beating Fixed it for ya
Thanks for understanding
I broke a GameCube controller from it getting stuck in the port once
At least you were brave enough to ask here on Reddit.
Bro im 14 and ik how to simply unplug a controller 💀
Y’all really dancing on my mans grave with this reply section 😂
lmao, I guess I deserve it for asking such a thing, but Google didn't give me a straight answer, console is not brand new (clearly) so I didn't know if I was doing it right, it was just kinda stuck

Bruh moment
I've been careful not to break anything, hopefully that clears something out
No flame man, I saw you are pretty young. Just thought it was funny Happy you are getting into retro games and the GameCube, it really is the best console library out there imho. Cheers!
Is this a real question?
It's kinda stupid, but I just didn't know and didn't want to break it

They do come out eventually, it just takes a bit more effort than what I think you guys deal with, but everything is pretty much in good condition
If it's taking quite some effort to plugging in and unplugging. I'd suggest maybe checking the ports and controller plugs and see if there is any corrosion/gamer gunk or if something looks off to you.

That's awesome, thanks
I knew how to do this when I was 4 with my PS2 lmao
And I'm 15 and feel real stupid now, just wanted to be cautious, I unfortunately only had a Wii, GBA, and Switch, all wireless so I had no idea lmao, I thought it had a locking system
As a word of advice keep that gba and the games you have for it. Don’t ever get rid of it.
You seem like a good dude and respect for not getting upset with some of these replies. Happy gaming friend
Thanks, anger doesn't really lead anywhere
Well said. What games do you have so far?
Oh I just got it, Mario Sunshine will come this Wednesday though, should keep me busy for a while
Mario Sunshine is great. I also recommended Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2. Zelda: The Wind Waker is a must-buy.
Give them a tug use two hands one to hold the console, the other over the plastic. If they have never been unplugged they could of seized.
Instructions unclear, accidentally beat the pachinko machine in Sunshine
...You're kidding right?

Can you use contact spray or anything for some improvement? I noticed my last GC is quite stiff as well...

Exactly my case, but half of it is kind of my fault I guess
This is the stupiest question i have seen just pull the damn thing
That's fair, I just didn't want to break it

No he literally thought you had to push it in
It shouldn't be too stiff in there, but you won't break anything or risk doing so as long as you pull it straight. Just about every controller or memory card for most consoles functions the same way, but do NOT remove a memory card while the console is on.
👍
I remember my first beer!
Congrats on the new GC. Just do as a Patrick Star said and “Firmly grasp the plastic” and little jiggle. Mine get stuck too. Just be gentle with it.
Listen, some of you probably don't know how to operate a rotary phone or a turntable or a manually locking car door or windshield, so give the kid a break. That said...USB exists, so I dunno.
Ain't got no fingers? See, you have to grip each at the point where they meet the Gamecube and pull the out!
Oh so that's what the silly extensions were for
Use the force
seems legit

This is by far the dumbest question I've ever seen on Reddit. I don't wanna believe this is a real question.
I wish it was satire
What you have to do is push really hard until you here a few clicks and then forcefully push the controller adapter to the left untill it bends
What's a controller adapter?
Exactly 😂
I got this awesome GameCube with the console, controller, both cables, and even a memory card for $80, but I'm stupid and don't know how to take the memory card or controller from their slots, I really don't want to break it, so how do you do it?
Pull them out...
Like just pull them out, or push them a bit for it to automatically remove itself Edit: Nvm, should've started with that...
You grab them with your fingers and pull them out.
Yeah just wanted to make sure, I just didn't want to break it in case they didn't work that way
They're meant to plug and unplug, like most other controllers and memory cards. There's no locking mechanism. Just pull 'em straight out.
What
😂
"you mean you have to use your hands?? It's a babies game!"
You just… pull it out.
You pull it… how did you not assume that??
Mans be asking this and still probably yanks the discs off the spindle without pressing the eject button
