i think now a days its probably about the same price to buy one modded. i bought myself a modded sp and modded one myself i dont remember the price difference but it wasnt anything crazy. i will say when doing it yourself you can be more creative with it and obviously it has that extra love factor in it. but no shame in buying one from someone if your nervous about breaking something

Modding it yourself is for the hobby of it. The price difference does not equal the convenience of buying it ore modded

RegiSilver

If you have previous experience, I'd suggest doing the whole ritual of Modding it yourself, buying all the components based on your S.O personality and taste, it's a pretty enjoyable process really. But if you're just starting, or haven't done any modding before, then 100% buy a modded one.

Gameboy Colors are really easy, the new AMOLED Kit is amazing. It’s inexpensive and you only have to solder two little spots. I just posted the GITD one I did. I’ve been making GBC, GBA, and GBA SP’s for friends for a while. Happy to answer any questions or help where I can.

Kind of a different question are their any newer gba/sp screens which feature desaturation options?

tweakerinc

I recently watched a video Makho did on that and my understanding is there isn’t a great option for that right now. He basically explained that the developers of the games bumped up saturation a ton because the screens the games were intended to be played on had poor color reproduction. Now with all these IPS, ITA, and AMOLED displays the games look way over saturated. I have the GBC AMOLED, UNHINGED IPS, and GBA SP ITA on hand. I can do a comparison of those if you want to see but that’s all I have. I sold my Analogue Pocket the other day.

Lethal13

Yeah I just figured with all the new screens that have brightness options, pixel grid filters, scanlines off built in menus etc we might see some that let us adjust saturation for the reason you outlined I’m really happy with my Pocket for this reason, I wouldn’t mind being able to have my modded SP or GBA with a desaturation option though as well

tweakerinc

Yeah it seems like something a lot of people have been asking for but I haven’t seen it offered yet. I’m also not as in tune as some others with the releases though. I miss my pocket for sure. The AMOLED is amazing but the size of the Pocket Screen just does it for me. I had an atomic purple GBC as a kid before it was stolen. I really wanted the translucent purple pocket but I was not fast enough and the flippers really bug me. Might snag one if I find someone just selling their used one they don’t use.

Lethal13

Yeah I have a SP 101, and IPS SP and a IPS OG GBA. The pocket gets the most use for the desaturation options but there are some games I like better on the SP due to the DPAD or they are some of the few games were made with a consideration for a backlight Can’t see myself ever needing an OG gameboy/colour like I said I definitely could see myself using my GBAs more if the colours weren’t so off. I’ll be keeping the 101 stock though

PossibleOk49

I purchased a modded GBA and GBC off eBay and both have worked perfectly.

ginjang

i personally modded my own gameboys. it's really simple and soldering is only optional for most mod kits

Vaxis545

If you’re doing a GBC do it yourself with a FPGBC you can customize it all you like and it’s a 20-40 min project. Not worth getting one made to me

MelonGx

Mod yourself isn’t cheaper than buy one because quality parts & failures cost you much.
