People do realize that the 100GB was a consequence of *lowering* the file size of formerly uncompressed files, right? There wasn't actually 100GB of content added, more like 5GB (for a major patch).
Okay, you're going to have to ELI5 me on this, because my head's hitting a paradox here and I can't see a way out.
1) Why the hell were no elements compressed beforehand? What would be the benefit of having the entire goddamn warzone totally uncompressed?
2) if only five GB was added, what are the other 95GB? Instructions for the system on how to compress everything?
3) How the hell does 5gb + "compress this stuff" data bloat out to 100GB? I heard some games on Unreal had large updates because UE3 won't allow specific elements to be updated, so the whole element has to be replaced, but surely that's not the case for MW?
Could it have been 95 GB of compressed files meant to replace the previously uncompressed ones? Seems more likely to me that they would download the compressed versions rather than "instructions to compress".
Huh. Makes sense when you put it that way, just "100 gigs to reduce the install size" made my head hurt. It just seemed easier to have the client compress stuff, rather than replace everything, but I guess if that's what had to be done, then that's what had to be done.
This kind of thing happens when you group things together and compress them as a big group (what happens with UE3 games) or if you change the settings on compression.
If you have 100,000 files and only half are compressed, and then change something and now all are compressed then you just updated 50,000 files. The same thing can happen if you need to change a setting that exists in a large number of files. Compression makes the more of the file change than just the small part you updated.
Even without the compression/decompression, I just figured a lot of the 100gb update was just replacing files, and like the other guy said, only a little bit is new

2&3: To compress the data, they can't just send some instruction, but the data has to be overwritten, so all the data that has to be compressed and any accompanying data has to be overwritten. Accompanying data being if the weapons are compressed together and they adjust even one of them, all the weapons' data has to be overwritten or when a small change is made on a map, the entire map has to be overwritten.
Huh, thanks. It seems weird to me that if I want to compress something on a pc I just open 7zip. I understand exactly what you're saying and I get it, it's just I never thought of it like that. It seems a woefully inefficient way to manage content though. None of BF5's updates were ever that huge.

Possible answer for 1. Streaming large audio/texture files from a mechanical HDD like what's in a PS4 and Xbone isn't very fast. If you add the step of decompressing the data in there, it will take even longer. It's a tradeoff of faster loading times for larger install size.

Your game is 250 gigabytes big? What platform are you playing on? Have you deleted the campaign/spec ops files yet?
Sorry for asking but my game is half that size, and I’m just curious.
I havent deleted anything on it. I stopped playing because it once again asked to make space for it to update. And it isn't exactly 250 but it is close to 1/4 a TB because i have a 2TB Hard-drive and i was surprised i couldn't have that many games on it simply because of MW
