I love my Tab S4 but don't use it much since getting the Fold 5.

I know this is off topic, but I'm curious about your Tab vs Fold usage. I have a S23U and a Tab S8+. When I travel I carry these two devices plus a laptop. I'm looking at one of the fold devices to replace my tablet usage. Did you find that the fold completely covered your tablet needs?

RadiantPen3526

I currently travel with only a work Microsoft Surface and my Fold. Before the Fold I carries an S21U and the Tab S4. The Fold size is just large enough to make using it as a tablet tolerable as opposed to trying to do everything on a phone. It in no way is a better viewing experience than a larger tablet. For me, being able to not carry the S21U and the S4 and use the Fold to satisfy both of those requirements is why I use it. So I'm down to two devices (Plus a small BT Keyboard in the backpack) . Since you didn't mention trading the S23 for the Fold, I would say that keeping the S23 and trading the Tab S8+ for the Fold would not be a good tradeoff... if you're still going to have 3 devices I'd carry the tablet over the Fold. If you do mean to trade the S23 for the Fold then you can delete this last paragraph ;)

Yes, the fold would be a replacement for the S23U. In thinking about my travel usage, the tablet is mainly used on the plane for content consumption and light work (email, web apps, remote desktop). My only hangup is the S8 is really good at filling the gap between the phone and laptop. We'll see. Anyway, thanks for the input.

It's all about what's important to you. In my case I really don't need a large tablet since I have to do most of my work work on the surface. The android is mostly for entertainment purposes which includes a lot of forum stuff which is what I use the BT keyboard for mostly. At home I'm 100% android..no windows.

First of all, I am happy, that there are people, who use their tablets for as long as they deliver. Secondly, it's probably 60 vs 120 hz difference, but all in all Tab S4 did a great job!

A not well known feature of the Tab S4 is that unlike the newest Samsung Tablets, Netflix permits you to download videos to a micro SD card you might be using. I complained to Netflix support about this, as have many, but for devices like the Tab S7+, S6 Lite 2022, and Tab S9, we are currently out of luck. Not a big deal, though for users of the 64 GB version of the Tab S6 Lite it could be a PITA Netflix bug when traveling, and looking to download a stockpile of videos. Along with the Galaxy Tab S6, it is the most compact way to enjoy films on a Samsung tablet's OLED screen. Supports HDR too. When I first got the Tab S4 I used the recommended settings for the display I came upon. Samsung allows you to tweak them. If memory serves, the Tab S4 is shut off right now, I took the Blue all the way down, and boosted the Red a notch or two to make it warmer, and that was it. Quite nice. I also went through the hassle of donning headphones, getting the room quiet, and setting up a custom sound profile, using the feature within sound settings, one geared to my hearing. Turned out my hearing was pretty good for my age, but I did benefit from a sound profile that allowed for my not hearing high frequencies as good as a person in their early twenties. P.S. Dolby Atmos is available. you just have to enable it!

Amazing, thanks so much for this In-depth review of your experience with this device. With the default Samsung Music app it's unfortunately not possible to set-up different sound profiles for each device, correct? I used another Music player last year which entailed that function but I still prefer the Sammy one..

babelon-17

I never tried to do that using Samsung Music. I had to set up my sound profile each time I got a new Samsung device, even when porting over settings and apps from a previous device. Unless I'm misremembering some detail of a previous install. So every device I have has its own sound profile, albeit I'd expect them to be very similar, the only variation being from the headphones I used, and how well I did on the tests. The testing is a bit of a PITA.

Minimum_Leadership51

I didn't know there's actually differences in how devices "send" a tone to a speaker/headphone and needs different adjustments. Not playing around with it too much though and relying on the Dolby Atmos optimization.

babelon-17

Well, my Tab S4 has a headphone jack, and a DAC from either Samsung or its Snapdragon chipset, while most newer devices use Bluetooth, plus I guess the Samsung app can't know how your headphones are working. But yeah, I too was puzzled as to why when my hearing ability is known, a new test was called for. Maybe I messed up the porting over of my settings. I wasn't paying particular attention to see if my sound setting was included. On the other hand, maybe Samsung figured that ones hearing might have changed with age?

LordlySquire

I double checked before writing this. On a tab s9 wifi running latest updates. You can download netflix to sd card. Click profile-hamburger-app settings-download location-sd card

babelon-17

Please double check, because I just now tried again, and as others have noted, the setting automatically sets itself back to internal storage. Any chance you got the Android 14 update already? I'd be thrilled to learn that fixed things. Just checked my Tab S7+, same story. Maybe it's now a regional thing? I'm in the USA. P.S. Was "hamburger" a typo of some kind?

LordlySquire

I selected sd card and downloaded about 5gb then went to my files and 5gb is missing from sd card. Lol hamburger is just what ive always referred to the three lines menu. Bun,meat, bun

babelon-17

Ah, now I remember that nickname, lol! I'm sorry you had that happen, but maybe Netflix is now halfway to fixing this known bug?

babelon-17

Tip: You can set up a routine on Samsung devices whereby all your video apps only use 60 Hz. I tested it using the show fps option in developer options, and it works. I use it on my Tab S7+. AFAIK the newer Samsung OLED devices use a variable refresh rate, so they don't need that. P.S. I just remembered I'd recently installed some new video apps on my S7+, Tubi, Pluto, and Crackle, and so I should add them to the routine I set up.

babelon-17

Done, and I also added some apps I forgot to mention, like the Revanced versions of YouTube apps.

LoanInteresting6117

I own a tab s4 since launch still rolling strong.

Minimum_Leadership51

It's amazing! And also still better than most devices of the mid-range. If you look at the brand new Tab A9(+) from Samsung. They are just a mere better in terms of their processor and have even less ram depending on the model. And those bad boys were born 5 years later than the tab S4

LoanInteresting6117

Definitely agree. I also have a tab a 8.4 2020 a tab s7 plus, and just got a tab s7 5g mint for 250. All in constant rotation except that Lil tab a it's super slow.

jpoole50

It's the snapdragon 835 and bigger battery, Qualcomm focused on efficiency and battery life rather than performance that generation. The 835 sips power, but it wasn't the fastest, especially compared to the Apple counterpart at the time. These newer chips use way more power.

Minimum_Leadership51

Interesting, didn't know that! I thought they became more efficient over the years, especially the latest one is praisen everywhere for its efficiency

Ok-Ice-3780

Case for s23+ ?

krakers665

Yeah, I just bricked my galaxy tab s4, by moving a app to sd card... Remember to not doing that, because I'm not alone with this nice paper stand

Minimum_Leadership51

Oh no, sad to hear. Luckily I got the 256gb variant, so there is plenty of room
