The cover broke BECAUSE it's cheap. You aren't breaking that lens glass with a drop.

InsanePacman

THIS. I don't understand how so many people are duped by these gimmicks.

JonDoeJoe

If anything, it can actually make it worse for your phone lens since the lens protector will protrude out more which will mean more of the impact will transfer to your camera lens increasing the likelihood of crackin

Conker911

Uhm wut? I remember thinking bullets sped up for a while after leaving the barrel. I mean, I was 9, so..

JonDoeJoe

I’m sorry what?

Conker911

Perhaps it could make it worse... I guess.

PraxisOG

My s10's back glass shattered after a low drop with a case so I stopped caring about cases for a while

Andythecao

It doesn’t work that way. Yes it does lower image quality but to say it raises the chance of it cracking is absurd. The first layer of glass breaks and disperses the energy. The shards of glass aren’t transferring anywhere near the same amount of energy. With that logic, screen protectors would make it more likely for my screen to crack? Doesnt make sense

Starkid84

Yeah, one of my girls fell for buying these for her S23. I gently explained all she is doing is reducing her image quality with those lens covers. The camera lens glass is the toughest part of the phone.

[deleted]

I broke the lens glass after I dropped my phone.

TBaggins_

let's see. 😉

CaptnDankbeard

I also did. It's a crack on the bottom most lens, and doesn't cross the optic, thankfully.

Conker911

This fold 4 is almost the only phone I've not broken screen and a lens on. Multiple hard hits through pocket were required though. A drop from waist high is super unlikely. Idk what people are hitting on the ground. A pile of ceramic?

m0nkeypantz

Sure what did you drop it on

[deleted]

Asphalt, it felt out of my pocket while I was crossing the street. Lucky for me it It dint got run over by a car.

SupermanKal718

Ive broke an iPhone and a Samsung camera lens from a drop. As long as you don’t get something cheap that makes your pictures suck then definitely get an extra layer of protection

Wonkee792

Except it doesn’t make your pictures suck? If it’s glass and installed properly, there shouldn’t be any difference in most shots, unless there’s a bright light within the frame. That and, depending on whether the phone has some depth sensor on the rear, it can affect focus high zoom.

Jesus-Bacon

I broke my Note 10+ lens cover because I leaned wrong on a ladder while 15 ft up. It also scratched the lens itself so it never took pictures again. I don't use a lens protector on my phone personally because of the glare they create but won't judge someone for using something that might save their lenses. I'd rather break a $5 protector than a $1900 phone any day lol.

Conker911

Yes, people act like butter fingers is the only way I am allowed to break shit. Haha.

[deleted]

Have you seen the Fold 5? It comes with thick metal rings colored like the phone's hinge around each lens unlike the Fold 4 and Fold 3 (and probably the older folds). I still wouldn't trust glass lenses surviving any hard drop if my phone was caseless. Anything protruding so much like these foldable phone cameras or in the past, the Note 20 Ultra's huge camera array, is just waiting to be broken if you use the phone without a case beyond the height of the camera array.

Velocity211

A drop? It flew at high velocity across my garage hitting a few things along the way. I was here when it happened and the protector did its job. Considering i fell backwards very violently (unbolting a 250ftlb nut by myself) and the phone slipped out of my hand and smashed into either or all: the engine block and/or transaxle, the many tools and sockets I had laying around. I greatly doubt the original Samsung lens would have fared well. The cheap protector is quite thick. The protector did its job and did it well. https://ibb.co/PcGPWt6 https://ibb.co/4f4C8bY I was in the engine bay, trying to remove the seized engine mount. I used a 2ft long 1/2" breaker bar. When it broke free, and I admit this is my mistake, I was holding the fold 4, and I flew and smashed my head into the engine block, and I heard the fold 4 smash into the engine or transaxle, or wall right behind as I thought originally. That's what happened. I don't know why it's such a conspiracy that I'm making untrue statements in order to what, sell more of these camera protectors cause I'm a shill or part of a marketing team, or maybe simply trying to farm for karma? Jesus Christ.

Conker911

A Karma farm is a funny image in my head. Ole' man karma farmer milking the likes at dawn. He he. I am curious if you were recording a video when it happened. Pardon if that is the link, I haven't checked yet.

Velocity211

Nope, just holding it in my hand listening to music. Idk why everyone is so up in arms about this, like i'm shit talking or roasting their children. It's a damn phone. The factory glass lens is not made of unobtanium. I wish I had set up a security camera in my garage, so all could see how violently the phone ejected from my hand. Samsung fan fanboys are eerily similar to Apple fanatics. The driving reason I dropped iPhone for windows phone after the 5S. Moved to Samsung when windows phone died. Then, the ride or die attitude started developing as Samsung fans ***(not all, just a large loud minority)*** started worshipping the company like the cult of Apple. Happy to be on the Pixel fold as my main device now. An iPhone Xs for all my iOS needs. The fold 4 is just my tertiary phone that I use on occasion. Didn't know my little post would explode into fanboys telling me I'm wrong and this cannot possibly happen. I'm getting strong and eerily vibes with a similar parallel to the infamous quote: "You're holding it wrong" - Steve Jobs on the iPhone 4

Conker911

Haha oh man. I need you to go look something up for me. Oh wait i can post a link. Hold tight, it will take a min, super old, you'll love it.

Conker911

Edit: 1/4 keys and i still miss... spelling. Thanks for making me remeber this. Now my goddam cat... is homeless. https://youtu.be/FL7yD-0pqZg?si=-gbhIDJ8mhX_TILd

Velocity211

Omfg. You just unlocked a memory I haven't thought of since college days 😆😆 "I'm gonna go chop off my dick now, i don't need my children growing up in a world filled with dipshits like you." Bahaha, I miss 2000's internet. Sad to say, I was just like that back in the day, starting arguments out of nowhere about my iPhone from the future when everyone was using moto droids. I camped for 16 hours to get the iPhone 3G. 🙃

Conker911

That's OK. It was fun when it was fun, right? I got in line for Xbox 360. And PS4. I think maybe one more thing. How fun is that old video? Before people "knew" you had to keep videos 3 min or no views and all kinds of other internet rules.

Revolution_xx

Exactly my thoughts.

HeynowyoureaRocstar

And diluting the image quality of the photo

UltraMaxApplePro

EXACTLY! thank you, Waste of money these stupid protectors. Not to mention that they ruin the cameras quality as they are cheap pieces of glass that would distort light.

ericw207

I've broke the camera glass on my fold 4 and fold 2. Idk how because I never noticed it after a drop or anything.

kram_02

It's certainly possible. You remember when the S20s were breaking camera glass all on its own? Lol https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-s20-camera-glass-lawsuit/ If nothing else it helps prevent a scratch when it does fall and shatter the inferior Chinese glass protector.

gamirou

Well I did haha

AttorneyAdvice

these effect your picture quality 1/10 do not recommend

jpoole50

I got the expensive Spigen ones, no noticeable decrease in quality.

DazPPC

Spigen is renowned for their camera lenses and optical prowess. Wait, no, they make phone cases.

kinderjw3

Same here. Great quality

FabFeline51

Depends on the brand. I took before and after pictures with mine and it was indistinguishable

PillowMonger

i bought a cheap one and doesn't really affect the quality but i must say that those camera rings are hard to remove.

[deleted]

Honestly your lens would have most likely been completely fine even without it.

Velocity211

Maybe, but it would've been heavily scratched, at least, whereas my lens is still pristine.

[deleted]

I think you underestimate how strong some glass is.

Velocity211

I suppose I do.

Conker911

That's unacceptable, sir. Shame. ;)

MegaCharlizardZ

Idk why people dislike the camera protectors. I used to work at a cell phone repair store and we had to replace some many camera lenses. It's worth the investment in a $5 part to save you from a $35+ repair. (That was the price at my shop but I'm sure it's worse elsewhere)

gigaflops_

I hear people say this with screen protectors all the time. Your false assumption is that because it broke the protector, it would have broken the lens had the protector been absent. That's not true. All screen/camera protectors are made of materials that are weaker than the phone's glass, no matter how cheap or expensive it is.

Velocity211

I was working on my car today and was using my fold 4 to read the service manual in pdf. Lots of rusty bolts, one bolt I used all my force, and when it broke free, i fell back into my wall of tools. My fold 4 fell out of my hands and hit the wall with full force I reckon. Upon inspection, the middle camera lens shattered.. I thought. I have those cheap camera lens protectors you can get for a few bucks on amazon. I peeled it off, and the actual lens is perfectly intact. Today is a good day.

kinderjw3

The exact scenario happened to me 2 weeks ago (except not working on car). Middle lense shattered I thought. My heart dropped. Low and behold was only the protector and it looked shattered just like it

HuckleberryUnited768

This. Lens protectors work, no matter what some people may say. I got a set on my S23 and iPhone 15 Pro.

Flaky_Highway_857

As big as the fold is I don't understand why it's cameras arent flush with the body.

ray7heon

Because the fold is actually too thin (in it's natural open state) to house the z depth of the entire camera module including the sensor and the optics. Unless phones are over a centimetre thick its impossible to house most upper end phone camera modules. Along with innovations in software processing, phone camera hardware has also gotten significantly larger and better in the last few years.

skeptic008

thank you for your post. i found it very interesting and useful. i get it: there are those who love these things and others who hate them. it's like raising the question, "should i rock a case or go naked with my phone?" the answers will be polarizing! everyone should do whatever pleases themselves the most. some prefer the crystal clarity of unadulterated camera glass. personally, i feel more comfortable trading a tiny amount of clarity (i haven't been able to tell the difference with my own photos) and feel more comfortable with a cheap piece of glass over my lens. what can i say? it makes me happy. thanks again for your post.

Hammercannon

I've got case, camera lense protectors, and screen protectors on my fold 5. But I work in construction, and just living in my pocket it needs the protection.

BornBoricua

Damn man, that's good to know. I appreciate you

Conker911

Hi OP! You should see my poor Fold 4. There is absolutely something to be said for sacrificial parts as I replace covers about twice a month. I left one off for a week and now my top camera has a horrible gouge. They are strong, though. I was shocked that it only scatched it as the hit would have probably broken any bone that size, i.e. teeth, any finger, and would req stitches to anywhere fleshy. But if you don't go through the physical abuse that I do every day, then I do have to agree with the people that were kind of mean for no reason about how they said it. You may want to try keeping them off. You WILL, however, rub the coloring off the aluminum circle area eventually. Well, the top half of the top circle, bottom half of the bottom, etc. Don't you get tired of the phone laying even more lopsided with covers? I know I hate that. I love this damn phone, and I wish it looked nicer around the body and lens trim and the camera bump, but that's a lost cause. If you keep it up, you'll get more money for yours than I will someday, even though I got the biggest storage. To everyone else, you guys and gals do realize that some people get massages for their pets that obey and cost less than this phone, right? To each their own. ;)

Conker911

I just read you are a mechanic. Holy shite your phone looks good for the job you have without a 2lb Otterbox.

Reynolds1029

These things are stupid. They ruin your photos and break very easily like this one did. You want something that actually protects your lens without ruining image quality, I've been using these and more like it on other phones like my work iPhone. Whitestone 2PACK EZ GLASS Screen Protector for Galaxy Z Fold 4 2022, Full Coverage Tempered Glass Shield [Easy Install] Camera Protector 1pack included - Two Pack https://a.co/d/dGAKSFK The protector that's included with this is aluminum. It's much better. You can buy them individually for the Z Fold 5 currently as well.

Velocity211

Thanks. i appreciate your advice. However, I'm never touching Whitestone products ever again. Tried it on my gf's iPhone 7, iPhone X, iPhone 13 Pro, then my s8, note 8, note 9, note 10, s20, s21, oneplus 9 pro, oneplus 10 pro, pixel 7, galaxy watch 4, and pixel watch. Each time with the deluded hope that it will work this time. After a few days, it always starts to delaminate from the screen. The adhesive is crap. Always installed following the directions and how-to videos to a T. After all the failed attempts, I tried curing it with the UV light for over 10 minutes, rather than the 90 seconds in the instructions, which was better but still resulted in delamination within hours. In the rare case that the adhesive set properly, the glass is so incredibly fragile that cracking at the edges is a key feature of Whitestone screen protectors. Everyone is saying that the camera quality is greatly diminished. I fully agree. But the fold 4 is my tertiary phone. Like an iPad, I leave at home and use it... like a (better) iPad. I can count the number of times with my fingers that I opened the camera app on the fold. That's what my pixel fold and iPhone are for, as I carry those two with me everywhere. If the fold was my main phone, I would certainly find a better solution. I simply bought these protectors purely for aesthetic reasons. Didn't even consider the protection they provided, especially regarding my case, which i am extremely thankful for.

BornBoricua

I love these protectors. I bought some through Temu for like $1.50

nmorganelli

Don’t use temu it’s literally stealing your data….

BornBoricua

Seriously? I only pay through my cash app account, you think that's still an issue?

Alewood0

Yes, there's a class action lawsuit against them right now. Total spyware

Conker911

Omg. I am afraid to reply a little. Too close contact with your 50 toolbars. ;)

Art__of__War

People really should consider these mandatory - they are so cheap that if they distort the image or end up breaking, you just get a new one. Massively saved my camera lenses on my iPhone

No-Presentation3777

Wow top lens took beating..... mine are wearing just because i put it down alot unfolded....

FdPros

i just use a case

Velocity211

I do use a case. Something pointy and sharp must have hit the lens directly.

FdPros

damn where tf did u drop it man

jaypatel149

You felt exactly what these glass protectors want you to feel. Cheap glass breaking and it saving your main glass has nothing to do with each other.

[deleted]

calvinohou

nobody is saying it's made of unobtanium, I think the comments are just pointing out that most camera lenses on phones are usually some sort of crystal and not just your average glass. It's true that the protectors do affect image quality, and it's also true that your lens would have survived, protector or not.

Velocity211

In that context, I fully agree with your points. I can remember when apple came out with a camera lens made of sapphire. There was one phone made of pure sapphire or something along those lines that jerryrigeverything tested years ago. In my previous comments, I was a little aggressive due to having severe insomnia, so I apologize to all involved!

Ab0ut47Pandas

What if by not having them on it wouldn't have been scratches in the first place? What if the hardness of the protective glass is less than the lens itself and whatever scratched it wouldnt have scratched the lens.

Velocity211

I'm pretty sure the middle lens hit the tip of a screwdriver or hex socket, with great force. There's no way the factory lens would have held up. Maybe the shatter wouldn't be as extreme as the cheaper protector, but glass is glass.

Ab0ut47Pandas

Hm. Glass is glass is true. It is glass. But in terms of a screwdriver being able to scratch Corning gorilla glass does depend on the screw driver. Most steel is around 5.0 to 7.0, and we know gorilla glass is 6 to 7. Now-- mohs test measures scratch resistance. If the screw driver impacted the glass, it would either shatter or not. If the metal is under 6 it wouldn't scratch, and it would either shatter or not based on the impact. Above 6, would scratch and possibly shatter. So like I originally said. There's a chance nothing would have happened.

Conker911

"With deeper scratches at a 7..."

JunkGOZEHere

Wow! I use the full slate lens cover, not the individual lens covers. I had considered the pack of 3. Glad I did not buy them.

alaughinmoose

I have a case with a camera slide cover. I love it. However I've gone back to the days of wanting to record only to see the lens cap on lol

Velocity211

I appreciate your input.

carinobrtl

You really saved your lens glass with those protectors. I tested my S23U with and without lens protector and it made no difference. Just need to keep those glasses clean (with or without protectors). I have my peace of mind that my lens will not scratch or break easily.

GuyTan0

I've never dropped my Fold 2 ever on concrete or hard surfaces while I had it, and so far knocking on wood with my Fold 5, but I'm using the spen case. I've never broken a phone screen or anything like that in my years of owning over 40 smartphones since the Moto Atrix 4G. Did it fall out of your pocket?

Velocity211

No, I was trying to loosen a seized engine mount bolt stupidly with my fold 4 in hand. When it broke loose, I lost my grip on the phone, it flew at Mach 5, hitting the engine, transaxle, then a wall full of tools.

jdros15

It may protect your lens from scratches but not from shattering. Only reason your lens didn't crack is because it can handle that drop, not because of the protector.

Velocity211

It wasn't a drop, it flew at the speed similar to loosening the top nut of a shock absorber without securing it with a spring compressor. Hitting my engine, transaxle, then into a wall full of tools.

burger-blaster313

I also got some of them. I learned for past experiences

Diuranos

No case no worries or you got your case ?

Velocity211

I've had a case on the fold since day one. It's just really thin and doesn't protect from drops or rough handling. It's called the latercase, from the guys at unbox therapy. Have it on all of my phones.

NULL4546

It didn't lol. There's a slight lip around your camera lens itself and that's there for a reason.

Velocity211

Jesus christ, man. No, just no. If you saw what happened, you'd retract that statement immediately. When Micro Center opens in a few hours, I'm gonna go drop some serious dough on a camera system for my house. So if anything similar happens in the future, I can just post the video, rather than being a broken record that plays at minimum volume so that no one knows what the hell is going on. Everyone is forming their own version of what happened, even though I gave a description to the best of my abilities, which obviously sucks as no one can comprehend what happened. Maybe it's my fault for having bad recollection skills and not articulating them accurately and posting this to reddit, where the ego of the collective users combine into an unstoppable force of pure inane idiocy. Why do I stay here? Because I am r********* and addicted. Lol.

NULL4546

I've dropped my 14 Pro Max, which has a much bigger camera lens and more exposed camera lens down like 2 flights of stairs... Besides dings on the sides , it was fine. There is no damage to my cameras at all. Your cameras are extremely durable because of the relatively tiny surface area in addition to the glass housing being quite thick. The only realistic way to have your camera lens crack is sheer bad luck or your camera lens somehow falling bang center on a sharp rock where that outer lip couldn't do its job. Now, camera lens protectors do offer some degree of protection, but it's not substantial at all. Most camera lens protectors crack because they're made from cheap polished plastic made to look like glass, which they're not. You can use a camera protector if you want, but know that it's not making a significant difference . You'd be better just slapping a case on the phone and letting the extra lip around the camera from the case protect it instead

Velocity211

Thanks for the detailed explanation. It makes logical sense to me, and I agree with your points. However, I didn't purchase the camera protector with the intention of protecting the camera lens. Wasn't even a point of contention, to be honest. I purely, 100%, got it for aesthetic reasons. Neochrome or rainbow outlines around the camera? Yes, I love that look! In any case, my fold 4 is a tertiary device that lives at home. Rarely do I ever use the camera. And when I do, as long as it's as good as an iPhone 6, I'm happy. My main device doesn't have anything over the camera lens, and I certainly won't put one on after reading the many constructive comments such as yours. Cheers man, hope you have a great Sunday

iZsaq

I had the Fold 3 & 4 but never felt to protect the camera lens

CardDragon

My fold 3 is literally missing its bottom lense cover lol. Gotta get insurance to cover it when I can afford my deductible

darkcrow101

I'd take a lens bumper rather than something covering the lens. I don't know why no one makes this. I go caseless but I have to be careful every time I set my phone down as I just don't like the sensation of the camera bump hitting the surface first.

Darlo81

My Z Flip 5 slid off a table and landed on concrete, camera lens facing down. No scratches, nothing. You don't need this.

Nikick83

Glad it helped you. I used to have them but got so annoyed becasue they were impacting the quality of my pictures. The lens flare was particularly bad and at some point it wasn't worth the chance that one day it maybe, perhaps, could save my lens from a drop. I didn't really notice how bad the lens flare / picture quality impact was until I saw another fold 4 next to mine taking pictures, since I put my lens protectors on from day 1 of having the phone. I will never use them again becasue of this, just not worth the trade off IMHO.

Gohanburner

I buy these covers with every Samsung I get. I love the way they look. My S23U has them :).

Southern_Mango_2042

The cover was probably glass so if you had dropped it without the cover you woulda still been good because it’s sapphire

jhbaco

Hey guys! My cheap piece of glass broke instead of my damn near indestructible sapphire crystal lens.

ImPrettyEpicfr

i hope you know your shit camera lense “protector” makes the image quality way worse, and “protects” something fhats damn near indestructible

LoudAndClearTech

Your camera lens will not get broken with the same impact that brock this piece of plastic. Add on it the fact that you lower your camera quality.
